27 GREYHOUNDS NAMED TO 2011 LANDMARK CONFERENCE WINTER ACADEMIC HONOR ROLL

MADISON, N.J. --- The Landmark Conference has recognized 202 student-athletes including 27 students from Moravian College by selecting them for the 2011 Winter Landmark Conference Academic Honor Roll. The honorees were selected from all eight Landmark Conference institutions.

The Landmark Academic Honor Roll recognizes all winter student athletes of sophomore standing or older with a cumulative GPA of 3.2 or higher. The student-athlete must complete the winter season in good standing with their team.  The Landmark Winter All-Academic Team, which features two male and two female student-athletes from each Landmark institution will be released later this year. In addition a Senior Scholar Athlete will be chosen for each Landmark sport.

Along with the Landmark Academic Honor Roll, one winter sport athletes earned spots on Capital One Academic All-District Teams and one men’s basketball player earned Capital One Academic All-America honors.

The Landmark Conference is in its fourth season of competition and includes eight institutions covering the mid-Atlantic region. The Landmark crowned six team championships this winter, and sent four programs to either the NCAA or ECAC postseason as well as eight individuals to the NCAA Division III Indoor Track & Field and NCAA Division III Swimming & Diving Championships.

Moravian had student-athletes selected from all four of its winter teams that compete in the conference with the women’s track and field leading the way with 13 honorees followed closely by men’s track and field with 11. The men’s and women’s basketball team each had two selections.

Junior Abby Schaffer (Easton, PA/Easton HS) led the honorees for the women’s track and field team by winning the women’s pole vault and has been named the 2011 Division III National Female Indoor Field Athlete of the Year by the United States Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association. Junior Cadee Rockwell (Sinking Spring, PA/Wilson HS) placed first in the women’s one mile and 5,000-meter runs at the Landmark Conference Championships while junior Kristina Ruggiero (Cedar Grove, NJ/Cedar Grove HS) won the 800-meter run.  Junior Lisa Williamson (Sinking Spring, PA/Wilson HS) captured the Landmark Conference title in the 55-meter dash while junior Brittany Moses (Perkasie, PA/Pennridge HS) placed third in women’s weight throw.

Other honorees included seniors Molly DuVall (Sewell, NJ/Washington Township HS), Rebekah Finn (Bethlehem, PA/Liberty HS), Mary Goggins (Wilmington, DE/Wilmington Friends HS), Kaleen Holden (Scranton, PA/Bishop Hannan HS), and Shannon McEvoy (Lafayette, NJ/High Point Regional HS) junior Lauren Molchan (Uniontown, PA/Laurel Highlands HS) and sophomores included Emma Pacheco (Flourtown, PA/Mount Saint Joseph Academy) and Samantha Sheridan (Glassboro, NJ/Pitman HS).

Leading the honorees for the men’s track and field team were senior Jake Tazik (Wyomissing, PA/Wyomissing HS), juniors Jordan Barton (Williamsport, PA/Montoursville HS), Nicco Dalpiaz (Sunbury, PA/Shikellamy HS), Timothy Layng (Canton, PA/Canton HS), Matthew Lutcza (Digmans Ferry, PA/Delaware Valley HS), Zach Rivenbark (Center Valley, PA/Southern Lehigh HS) and Gary Zack (Mountain Top, PA/Crestwood HS) and sophomores Jake Donchez (Bethlehem, PA/Bethlehem Catholic HS) and Travis King (Wilmington, DE/Concord HS)

Layng won the pole vault at the Landmark Conference Championships and competed at the NCAA Division III National Championships in the event while Dalpiaz was the runner-up in the pole vault and won the 55-meter hurdles.  Lutcza was the runner-up in the mile and 5,000-meter runs while Tazik was the Landmark Conference runner-up in the 800-meter run. 

Senior guard Jennie Miller (Lewisburg, PA/Lewisburg HS) and junior guard Cassie Phillips (Orwigsburg, PA/Nativity BVM HS) were the honorees for the women’s basketball team. The Greyhounds ended its season 14-13 overall with a record of 9-5 in conference play and also reached the 2011 ECAC Division III South Championship Tournament.

Senior center Chris Cullen (East Islip, NY/East Islip HS), who was named to the Landmark All-Conference Second Team, and senior guard Ryan O’Donnell (Succasunna, NJ/Roxbury HS) made the 2011 Winter Landmark Conference Academic Honor Roll for the men’s basketball team. The Greyhounds ended its season with a 9-16 record overall, finishing with a 3-11 record in the conference.
