MORAVIAN CAPTURES THIRD LANDMARK PRESIDENT’S ALL SPORTS CUP TITLE

MADISON, N.J.A strong spring season helped Moravian College rally in the standings and claim the 2010-11 Landmark Conference President’s All Sports Cup. The victory gives the Greyhounds three President’s Cup titles in the four-year history of the Landmark.

In the closest finish since the inaugural Landmark season, which Moravian won by a margin of .0017, Moravian reclaimed the title by a margin of .047 with a total of 6.922. The University of Scranton tallied a score of 6.875 to finish second, giving them two runner-up finishes in four Landmark seasons. Defending champions Susquehanna University posted a total of 6.463 to place third, giving them three-straight finishes in the top-3 in the standings.

The Landmark President’s All Sports Cup is awarded based on a formula that rewards institutions for their finishes in the regular season conference standings as well as results in Landmark postseason competition. The formula also takes into account the number of sports a school sponsors.

The winning total of 6.922 was the highest since the Greyhounds scored 7.181 to win the 2008-09 President’s Cup. Moravian combined to captured seven regular season or conference tournament championships in the winter and spring season to make up an early deficit, culminating with titles in men’s and women’s outdoor track & field, softball, and women’s tennis in the spring and finishing atop the regular season standings in baseball.

Scranton’s runner-up finish was fueled by remarkable consistency in the winter and spring seasons as the team qualified for the Landmark postseason in every sport in those two seasons, and won championships in men’s basketball and men’s lacrosse, to go along with a women’s soccer championship in the fall. The Royals also boasted runner-up finishes in baseball, women’s tennis, women’s swimming & diving and women’s basketball, helping the team to its highest point total in four years.

A first-ever championship in women’s swimming & diving along with regular season or championship second-place finishes in men’s and women’s indoor and outdoor track & field, and softball helped Susquehanna to its third-place finish in the standings. Its total of 6.463 was only .387 points away from its winning total of last season.

The Landmark concluded spring competition at the 2011 NCAA Division III Outdoor Track & Field Championships, in which Landmark competitors earned four individual national championships. That capped a year that saw 13 Landmark teams to NCAA Tournaments and had a total of 23 athletes qualify for NCAA Championships in cross country, swimming & diving, and indoor and outdoor track & field.
