MORAVIAN HONORS SENIOR STUDENT-ATHLETES
MORAN & REECEK NAMED SENIOR ATHLETES OF THE YEAR
BETHLEHEM, PA --- Moravian College honored its 1999 senior student-athletes at its
annual Senior Awards Banquet Thursday evening. Mens basketball standout Jason
Moran (Scranton/West Scranton HS) was named the Outstanding Senior Male Athlete while
All-American and two-sport standout Kristie Reccek (Hellertown/Wilson HS) was
honored with the Outstanding Senior Female Athlete award. The Blue & Grey Scholar
Athletes awards were presented to volleyball and basketball player Stephanie Rickards
(Lansdowne/Upper Darby HS) and mens basketball player Matt Getter (Broomall/Marple
Newtown HS). The H.T.D. Gillespie Award for outstanding service to Moravians
athletics program was presented to Bob and Pat Schoenen.
Moran, a two-time Middle Atlantic Conference Commonwealth League All-Star, led the
mens basketball team to a 10-14 record this season and the squads fourth
straight championship in the Greyhound Classic. Moran was also named the Most Valuable
Player of the Greyhound Classic for the fourth straight season. He led Moravian this
past winter with 16.1 points and 8.3 rebounds per game averages. Moran, who finished
his career as a four-year starter with over 1,300 points and 700 rebounds, also led the
Greyhounds with 33 blocks and was second on the squad with 60 assists.
Reccek was an All-American at the 1997 NCAA Division III Cross Country National Championships
and won a total of 12 MAC Team Championships in her career with four in cross country,
four in indoor track and field and four in outdoor track an d field. Reccek has also
won 10 MAC Individual Championships the past two seasons including five this year. She
was the MAC Champion at the MAC Cross Country meet and won both the 1,500 meters and
the 3,000 meters at both the MAC Indoor and Outdoor Track and Field Championships. Reccek
was named the Most Outstanding Athlete at the MAC Outdoor meet and has automatically
qualified in the 3,000 meters and provisionally qualified in the 1,500 meters at the
NCAA Division III Outdoor National Championships to be held at Baldwin Wallace College
from May 20th to 24th. Reccek competed in the NCAA Division III
Cross Country National Championships all four years at Moravian with one top ten team
finish, eighth in 1997.
Rickards, who maintained a perfect 4.0 throughout her college career, led the womens
volleyball team to a 51-12 record over the last two seasons and the schools first
two appearances in the NCAA Division III National Championships in volleyball. This past
season, Rickards set a school record with 468 kills and had a team leading .368 hitting
percentage. She added 125 blocks, 276 digs and 38 service aces. Rickards was honored
on the GTE Academic All-American College Division First Team and was the GTE Academic
All-America Team Member of the Year for all of NCAA Divisions II and III and the NAIA.
She was also on the MAC Commonwealth League All-Star First Team and the American Volleyball
Coaches Association All-Mid-Atlantic Region Team. The English and secondary education
major helped the womens basketball team to a 14-10 record this season with career
highs in points with 131 and in rebounds with 135. Rickards was named to the MAC All-Academic
Teams six times in her career.
Getter set three records this past season with nine three-pointers in a game against
Elizabethtown College on January 23rd, 71 three-pointers for the season and
142 three-pointers in his career. Getter netted 14.5 points per game this past winter
and added 50 steals and 38 assists. Recently, Getter was named to the United States Jewish
All-American Division III First Team. He led all players on the team in three-point field
goal percentage at 38.6 percent (71 of 184). Getter will play for the United States in
the Maccabiah Pan American Games to be held in Mexico City between July 8th to
20th. He was also named to the MAC Executive Directors All-Academic
Team this season after making the MAC Academic Honor Roll the two previous seasons.
The Schoenens have been active members of the Blue & Grey Club and have donated
money to the athletics department for several different projects. The couple also works
with the Blue & Grey Golf Classic and headed the committee for the Presidents
Inaugural Ball for Dr. Ervin J. Rokkes last year.
