FIVE HOUNDS ON MAC EXECUTIVE DIRCETORS
ALL-ACADEMIC TEAMS
ELEVEN OTHERS NAMED TO ACADEMIC HONOR ROLL
ANNVILLE, PA --- A total of 16 student-athletes from Moravian College are listed on the
Middle Atlantic Conference All-Academic Teams and Honor Rolls that were released Thursday.
This year is the first for the MAC Executive Directors All-Academic Teams and the
Academic Honor Rolls. In the past, all student-athletes were named to the MAC All-Academic
Teams.
Moravian placed five student-athletes on the MAC Executive Directors All-Academic
Teams while the other 11 were named to the Academic Honor Roll.
To be eligible for All-Academic honors, a student-athlete must be at least a sophomore,
maintain a 3.20 or higher grade point average and be a starter of significant reserve on
a fall athletic team. To be named to the Executive Directors team, a student-athlete
needs to have academic qualifications as well as athletic contributions to his or her team.
The 16 sports information directors in the MAC vote on the Executive Directors team.
Juniors Zan Azzolino (Lodi, NJ/Immaculate Heart Academy) of the softball team and Tim
Pfluger (Slatington/Northern Lehigh HS) of the mens track and field squad and
sophomores Meg Ryan (Edison, NJ/Edison HS) from the softball team, Brooke Dancho
(Bethlehem/Freedom HS) of the womens track and field squad and Damon Rutherford
(Reading/Exeter HS) from the mens track and field team were named to the MAC
Executive Directors All-Academic Team.
Azzolino, a first team MAC Commonwealth League All-Star and Louisville Slugger-National
Fastpitch Coaches Association All-East Region Third Team honoree, led the Moravian College
softball team to the squads second straight appearance in the NCAA Division III East
Regional. For the season, Azzolino, the school record holder in assists, had 49 hits in
119 at-bats for a .412 batting average. She scored 26 runs and added five doubles, three
triples and 17 RBIs. Azzolino was named to the All-Tournament Team at the NCAA Division
III East Regional last weekend for the 28-16 Greyhounds.
Pfluger captured his fourth straight MAC Individual Championship in the 1,500 meters.
Winning the event both indoors and outdoors the past two seasons. Pfluger also placed second
in the 5,000 meters at the MAC Championships. The Greyhound squad finished third of 10
schools at the MAC Championships this spring.
Ryan, a MAC Commonwealth League First Team All-Star and Louisville Slugger-NFCA Second
Team honoree as a designated player, led Moravian with 26 RBIs this season. Ryan hit .331
with 42 hits in 127 at-bats. She added 18 runs scored, seven doubles, three triples and
a team high 16 walks. Ryan was named to the All-Tournament Team at the NCAA Division III
East Regional last weekend.
Dancho helped the Lady Greyhounds to their seventh straight MAC Outdoor Track and Field
Championship by competing in four events. Dancho finished third in the long jump, fifth
in the triple jump, fifth in the 200 meters and sixth in the 100 meters.
Rutherford competed in three events at the MAC Championships, finishing second in the
3,000-meter steeplechase, eighth in the 1,500 meters and tenth in the 5,000 meters.
Earning spots on the MAC Academic Honor Roll were sophomore Mike Gill (Lebanon, NJ/North
Hunterdon HS) of the baseball team, junior Brian Fry (Bethlehem/Bethlehem Catholic
HS) from the golf squad, juniors Trish Salomonsen (Effort/Pleasant Valley HS) and Marcia
Zangrilli (Douglasville/Daniel Boone HS) and sophomore Katie Warren (Farmington,
CT/Farmington HS) of the softball team, junior Erica Landes (Reading/Muhlenberg
HS) and sophomore Kate Westermann (Milford, CT/Lauralton Hall) of the womens
track and field squad and seniors Jeff Bradbury (Conyngham/Hazelton HS), Josh
Gold (Northampton/Northampton HS), Chris Lowthert (Auburn/Pottsville HS) and Tyler
McClimon (Birdsboro/Daniel Boone HS) from the mens track and field team.
Gill, the Greyhounds starting shortstop, had a .256 batting average this season with 23
hits in 90 at-bats. Gill also contributed 15 runs scored, 20 walks, nine RBIs and eight
stolen bases for the 11-19-1 Greyhounds.
Fry tied for 29th at the MAC Championships as the Greyhounds finished fourth
of 14 schools. Fry averaged 88.0 per round this spring with a season low of 83.
Salomonsen had four hits this season for the softball team with four RBIs and a three-run
homerun against Delaware Valley. Zangrilli had five hits, five RBIs and two doubles while
Warren had two hits in three at-bats, scored eight runs and had a 1-0 record on the mound.
Landes tied for fourth in the high jump at the MAC Championships for the winning Lady
Greyhound squad while Westermann was 12th in both the 1,500 meters and the 3,000
meters at the MAC meet.
Bradbury placed eighth in the 10,000 meters at the MAC Championships while Gold was 19th in
the javelin. Lowthert placed seventh in the 5,000 meters and ninth in the 10,000 meters.
McClimon ran the same races as Lowthert with a 11th place showing the 5,000
meters and a seventh place finish in the 10,000 meters.
