21 GREYHOUNDS NAMED TO MAC ACADEMIC HONOR ROLL

ANNVILLE, PA --- Moravian College has had 21 of its winter student-athletes named to the Middle Atlantic Conference Academic Honor Rolls announced Wednesday.

To be eligible for Academic Honor Roll accolades, a student-athlete must be at least a sophomore, maintain a 3.20 or higher grade point average and be a starter or significant reserve on a fall athletic team.

The women’s indoor track and field team led Moravian with 11 student-athletes named to the honor roll while the men’s indoor track and field team had seven student-athletes honored. The men’s basketball squad has two players named to the MAC Academic Honor Roll and one women’s basketball player made the list.

Six of the 11 members from the women’s indoor track and field team are sophomores led by Heidi Wolfsberger (Moosic/Riverside HS), who will compete at the 2000 NCAA Division III Indoor National Championships this weekend. Joining Wolfsberger are fellow sophomores Jen Boberg (Lansford/Panther Valley HS), Erin Boyle (Philadelphia/Nazareth Academy), Tiffany Catalino (Bethlehem/Freedom HS), Amanda Samok (Palmerton/Palmerton HS) and Emily Shertzer (Hummelstown/Lower Dauphin HS). Wolfsberger was named the Most Outstanding Athlete at the 2000 MAC Indoor Championships after becoming the first female in conference history to win four gold medals at the indoor meet. Wolfsberger won the 800 and 1,500 meters and was part of the 3,200-meter with Boyle and Samok and distance medley relay team with Catalino and Shertzer. Shertzer also won the gold medal in the 5,000 meters.

Juniors Brooke Dancho (Bethlehem/Freedom HS), Kate Westermann (Milford, CT/Lauralton Hall HS) and Leah Williams (Andreas/Tamaqua HS) joined seniors Alexis Katchuk (Whitney Point, NY/Whitney Point HS) and Eric Landes (Reading/Muhlenberg HS) on the MAC Academic Honor Roll from the women’s indoor track and field team. Katchuk won the long jump and was second in the triple jump while Landes and Williams tied for fourth in the high jump at the 2000 MAC Championships.

Senior Tim Pfluger (Slatington/Northern Lehigh HS) led the honorees from the men’s indoor track and field team for the Greyhounds. Pfluger won a gold medal in the 1,500 meters, his sixth in his career, at the 2000 MAC Championships and will run at the NCAA National Championships in the race. He also won a gold medal in the distance medley relay with junior Damon Rutherford (Reading/Exeter HS), who was also on the MAC Academic Honor Roll. The duo also placed second in the 3,200-meter relay. Junior Anthony Rediger (Sellersville/Pennridge HS), who was the MAC Champion in the triple jump and placed third in the high jump and fourth in the long jump, also earned a spot on the MAC Academic Honor Roll.

The Greyhounds other representatives from the men’s indoor track and field team were senior sprinter Jason Goldan (Neshanic, NJ/Hillsborough HS), junior thrower Dan Kowalchuk (Phillipsburg, NJ/Phillipsburg HS) and sophomore sprinters Chris Colley (Easton/Easton HS) and Scott Heydt (Boyertown/Boyertown HS). Colley ran at the MAC Championships in the 800 and 1,600-meter relays.

Senior guard Rich Whalen (East Brunswick, NJ/East Brunswick HS) and sophomore guard Doug Spadt (Emmaus/Emmaus HS) represent the Greyhound men’s basketball team on the MAC Academic Honor Roll. Whalen finished the season with a scoring average of 8.7 points per game. Whalen, who is ranked in the top ten in the nation in steals per game, led the squad with 3.8 assists and 3.6 steals per game. Spadt averaged 8.5 points per game in his first year as a starter and he connected on 26 three-pointers for the 10-14 Greyhounds.

Senior guard Jen Polaha (Seattle, WA/Holy Name {PA} HS) was the only representative from the Lady Greyhounds basketball squad this winter. Polaha averaged 5.7 points per game and led Moravian with 85 assists. Polaha added 39 assists and 20 three-pointers for the 4-20 Lady Greyhounds.
