Greyhound Weekly Update, January 10, 2005 (-2222-)

 

Women’s Basketball – 10-2 (Commonwealth Conference 2-0, MASCAC 4-2)

            The Greyhounds won their first game back after a 22-day break for the holidays with a 77-49 victory at Wilkes University in non-conference action.  Moravian jumped out to a 41-17 first half lead after shooting 43 percent (15 of 35) from the floor in the first 20 minutes.  The Greyhounds were also ten of 11 on their free throw attempts (91 percent) in the first half.  Moravian finished the game shooting 43.1 percent (28 of 65) from the field with four three-pointers. The Greyhounds also made 17 of 22 free throw attempts (77.3 percent) while holding a dominating 47-27 advantage on the boards in the win.  Moravian had three players score in double figures led by 14 points from junior forward Stephanie Seaman (Bethlehem, PA/Bethlehem Catholic HS).  Seaman also added seven rebounds and a team high three steals while sophomore forward Kelly Applegate (Easton, PA/Wilson HS) had 12 points and a team high nine rebounds in her first start of the season. Sophomore guard Rachel Berlin (Bethlehem, PA/Freedom HS) returned to the starting line-up after missing the last seven games with an injury and contributed 11 points and six boards, which tied her career high. Junior guard Dianna DeFiore (Hammonton, NJ/St. Joseph HS) scored a career high nine points for the Greyhounds while sophomore forward Jenny Hackleman (Solvang, CA/Rutgers Prep {NJ} HS) and junior forward Heather MacDonald (Wayne, NJ/Wayne Valley HS) each netted eight points in the victory.  MacDonald added five rebounds while junior guard Nicole Savino (Macungie, PA/Brandywine Heights HS) tossed in four points. Senior guard Jen Behagg (Hamburg, NJ/Pope John XXIII HS) had four rebounds, two assists, two steals and two points while freshman guard Sara Steinman (Springfield, NJ/Jonathon Dayton HS) contributed three assists.  Freshman guard LaToya Blake (Allentown, PA/Dieruff HS) grabbed three rebounds and added two points while sophomore guard Katie Rizman (Wall, NJ/St. Rose HS) had three points and two assists in the victory.  Junior guard Lindsay Brase (Bethlehem, PA/Notre Dame HS) also returned to the Moravian line-up after missing six games with an injury, contributing two rebounds in limited action.

 

            Moravian won its first game in the 4th Annual Starters Moravian Winter Classic and its third consecutive contest overall with a 95-38 victory over Rosemont College.  Moravian's starters played just five minutes in the second half and all 16 Greyhounds players in uniform saw at least eight minutes of action with all but one scoring at least two points.  Just two Greyhound players scored in double figures with Hackleman scoring a team high 14 points on a perfect seven-of-seven from the floor in just 12 minutes of action.  Hackleman added three rebounds and four steals.  Berlin netted ten points and added five rebounds and three assists, her second straight game in double figures since returning from an injury.  Seaman and Rizman each had nine points for Moravian with Seaman adding seven rebounds and Rizman dishing out five assists.  Applegate and MacDonald each scored eight points with Applegate contributing four rebounds and two blocked shots.  Brase, DeFiore and Savino each scored six points.  Savino added five rebounds while Brase the three boards.  Blake grabbed a career high ten rebounds to go with a career best four points and three steals while freshman guard Allison Solomita (Chatham, NJ/Chatham HS) had four steals, three assists, three rebounds and two points, all career highs, for the Greyhounds in the win.

 

            The Greyhounds captured the championship of the 4th Annual Starters Moravian Winter Classic with an 83-61 victory over Kean University of New Jersey in the title game.  Moravian, which has now won four consecutive games, led 46-32 at halftime after shooting 44 percent (15 of 34 from the field) with three three-pointers and 13 of 16 free throws.  The Greyhounds also had just six turnovers in the first 20 minutes with 20 turnovers for the game.  Moravian finished the game making 43.5 percent of its shots (27 of 62) including 44.4 percent of its three-pointers (four of nine).  The Greyhounds also connected on 25 of 33 free throws (75.8 percent).  Seaman led five Moravian players in double figures with 19 points, and she grabbed a game high 11 rebounds while being named the tournament's Most Valuable Player.  Seaman also had three steals, two assists and two blocked shots.  Hackleman was named to the All-Tournament Team after scoring 11 points and added four rebounds and three assists.  Behagg also earned a spot on the All-Tournament Team with a ten-point, four-rebound performance.  Berlin and Applegate each had ten points for the Greyhounds while Rizman added eight points, five assists and four boards.  Savino contributed five points and two rebounds while Brase had three rebounds and two points for Moravian in the victory.

Men’s Basketball – 4-9 (Commonwealth Conference 2-0, MASCAC 4-2)

            Moravian won its first game back after the semester break with a 70-68 non-conference victory at Delaware Valley College.  The Greyhounds led by as many as 13 points in the first half and were ahead 36-33 at halftime.  Moravian made 11 of 24 field goal attempts (45.8 percent) with three three-pointers and 11 of 16 free throws (68.8 percent).  In the second half, Delaware Valley would take a four point lead at 44-40 with 14 minutes remaining in the game. The teams would go back and forth for the remainder of the game.  The contest had 61 fouls, 46 turnovers, ten ties and eight lead changes including three lead changes and two ties in the final 25 seconds.  The Aggies led 64-63 heading into the final minute when Moravian freshman guard Justin Chestnut (Willow Grove, PA/Upper Moreland HS) stole the ball and drove in for a lay-up and was fouled.  Chestnut made the free throw for a 66-64 Greyhound lead with 25 seconds to play.  Delaware Valley's tied the game with 19 seconds remaining on a lay-up.  Chestnut would give Moravian the lead back four seconds later on a pair of free throws.  The Aggies pulled even at 68-68 with a pair of free throws with 10.1 seconds remaining.  Moravian junior forward Steve Wenderfer (Chester, NJ/Mendham HS) won the game for the Greyhounds with a lay-up with just 0.8 seconds remaining on the clock.  Moravian, which committed 33 fouls in the game, shot 41.2 percent (21 of 51) from the field during the game with just three three-pointers.  The Greyhounds, who also committed 26 turnovers in the victory, made 25 of 37 free throw attempts (67.6 percent) in the win.  Chestnut led Moravian with a career high 17 points while Wenderfer added 14 points and a team high nine rebounds.  Chestnut added four rebounds and three steals.  Senior forward Brandon Zaleski (Hackettstown, NJ/Hackettstown HS) and junior forward Zach Zsilavecz (Bethlehem, PA/Liberty HS) each scored 12 points in the victory before fouling out.  Zaleski, who moved into second all-time at Moravian in scoring with 1,647 career points, added six rebounds and three blocked shots, which tied his career high.  Zsilavecz also had five rebounds while sophomore guard Michael Clemente (Toms River, NJ/Central Regional HS) had nine points.  Freshman forward Chris Earley (Brielle, NJ/Manasquan HS) had a career high three blocked shots while sophomore forward Matt Devlin (Sadsburyville, PA/Coatesville HS) grabbed four rebounds.

 

            The Greyhounds dropped their first game in the 27th Annual Starters Greyhound Classic with a 92-78 loss to Lincoln University.  The Greyhounds fell behind 16-9 to Lincoln with 12:59 to play in the first half and would trailed by seven points again at the 11:14 mark but a 10-0 run helped Moravian take a 25-22 lead with 9:10 left before the intermission.  The teams would seesaw back and forth the rest of the half with the Lions taking a 44-42 halftime advantage.  The Lions started the second half with a 9-0 run for a 53-42 lead with 18:25 remaining in the game.  The closest Moravian would get the rest of the contest would be four points at 58-54 with 14:23 left.  The Greyhounds shot 45.3 percent for the game (29 of 64) with seven of 18 on three-point attempts and 13 of 22 at the foul line.  Moravian committed just ten turnovers in the game.  The Greyhounds had four players score in double figures led by Zaleski, who had 21 points, nine rebounds, three assists and two blocked shots.  Junior guard Ed Reid (Pen Argyl, PA/Pen Argyl HS) added 12 points while Zsilavecz contributed 11 points.  Clemente scored a career high ten points for the Greyhounds while Wenderfer added nine points and seven rebounds.  Chestnut netted six points with four assists and three steals for Moravian while junior guard Chris Betley (Mt. Laurel, NJ/Lenape HS) added five points in his first home game of the season.

 

            Moravian suffered its second straight loss, falling to Gwynedd-Mercy College, 85-75, in the consolation game of the 27th Annual Starters Greyhound Classic.  The Greyhounds had rallied from a nine-point deficit with 13:14 remaining in the first half to take a 43-41 halftime lead on tip-in by Earley as time expired in the half.  Moravian jumped out to a 49-43 lead with 18:11 left in the game but Gwynedd-Mercy fought back, taking its first lead of the second half at 54-53 with 12:50 remaining . The game stayed close the rest of the way with Moravian going on a 6-0 run at one point to regain the lead at 69-68 with 5:07 to play.  The Griffins put the game away at the foul line in the last four minutes, making all ten attempts.  Zaleski led three Moravian players in double figures with a game high 21 points.  Zaleski, who was named to the All-Tournament Team, also had five rebounds.  This was the fourth straight year that Zaleski was named to the All-Tournament Team at the Greyhound Classic.  Wenderfer added 14 points and eight rebounds while Clemente tied his career high with ten points, all in the first half.  Freshman guard Ryan Miller (Easton, PA/Easton HS) and Betley each added eight points for the Greyhounds while Chestnut had seven points.  Miller dished out three assists while Earley had six points and three rebounds for Moravian.
