Greyhound Weekly Update, January 17, 2005 (-2222-)

 

Women’s Basketball – 12-2 (Commonwealth Conference 4-0, MASCAC 6-2)

            Moravian ran its winning streak to five straight games and remained undefeated in Commonwealth Conference action with a 75-59 victory over Lebanon Valley College in the Greyhounds first conference action of 2005.  After taking a 3-1 lead early in the game, the Greyhounds would fall behind and trail the Flying Dutchmen by as many as eight points at 17-9 with 13-31 remaining until the intermission.  Moravian fought back and tied the score at 24-24 and then again at 26-26 before regaining the lead at 28-26 with 4:25 left in the half.  Lebanon Valley took the lead right back and led 30-28 before Moravian took the lead for good with 1:34 remaining in the first half on a trio of free throws by sophomore guard Rachel Berlin (Bethlehem, PA/Freedom HS).  The Greyhounds shot just 33.3 percent from the floor (nine of 27) in the first half with two three-pointers, however, Moravian made 17 of 24 free throws (70.8 percent) before the intermission.  When the second half started, Lebanon Valley would pull within four points twice, the last at 40-36 with 16:30 left in the game.  However, Moravian continued to pull away and led by as many as 23 points with a 71-48 lead with 4:29 remaining in the contest.  The Greyhounds pulled their starting line-up for the remainder of the game.  Moravian shot 50 percent (15 of 30) in the second half to finish the contest at 42 percent (24 of 57).  The Greyhounds were also 25 of 38 at the foul line (65.8 percent) while Lebanon Valley attempted just 20 free throws, making 12 of them.  However, the Flying Dutchmen shot just 29 percent in the second half (11 of 38) while the Greyhounds pulled ahead.  Moravian had three players in double figures led by junior forward Stephanie Seaman (Bethlehem, PA/Bethlehem Catholic HS), who netted a game high 19 points with 16 coming in the second half.  Seaman also had is rebounds for the Greyhounds.  Sophomore forward Jenny Hackleman (Solvang, CA/Rutgers Prep {NJ} HS) had another double-double for the Greyhounds, her third of the season, with 12 points and ten rebounds to go with three assists.  Sophomore forward Kelly Applegate (Easton, PA/Wilson HS) contributed 11 points and four rebounds while Berlin and sophomore guard Katie Rizman (Wall, NJ/St. Rose HS) each added nine points and five rebounds.  Senior guard Jen Behagg (Hamburg, NJ/Pope John XXIII HS) led Moravian with seven assists to go with seven rebounds and four points.  Junior guards Dianna DeFiore (Hammonton, NJ/St. Joseph HS) and Nicole Savino (Macungie, PA/Brandywine Heights HS) each had four points for the Greyhounds.

 

            The Greyhounds extended their winning streak to six consecutive games with a 76-57 victory over Juniata College in Commonwealth Conference action.  Moravian has scored at least 75 points in all six wins while allowing under 60 points for the fourth time in five games.  The Greyhounds never trailed in the game and took control of the contest after the Eagles had tied the contest at 4-4 with 18:40 remaining in the first half.  Moravian would lead by as many as 19 points in the first half and held a 36-21 advantage at the intermission.  The Greyhounds shot 48 percent (13 of 27) from the floor in the first half and were a perfect ten-for-ten at the foul line.  Moravian, which committed 13 first half turnovers, forced Juniata into 20 turnovers in the game's first 20 minutes while the Eagles made just nine of 21 field goal attempts.  The Greyhounds extended the lead to 21 points three times in the second half while the closest the Eagles would get would be 12 points at 57-46 with 6:36 remaining in the game.  Moravian shot 46.6 percent (27 of 58) from the floor in the game with two three-pointers, and the Greyhounds made 20 of 25 free throws (80 percent).  Moravian was forced into 36 turnovers in the game; however, the Greyhounds had a 46-25 advantage in rebounds in the victory.  Moravian had three players score in double figures led by Berlin, who scored a game and season high 19 points.  Berlin also had a career high six steals while Hackleman added 17 points, five rebounds and three assists for the Greyhounds.  Seaman had her third double-double of the season with ten points and a career-high tying 14 rebounds while collecting three steals.  Applegate contributed nine points and five rebounds for Moravian while Rizman had eight points and four rebounds.  Freshman guard Sara Steinman (Springfield, NJ/Jonathan Dayton HS) netted seven points for Moravian.

            The Greyhounds lost first Commonwealth Conference game of the season and saw their losing streak fall to three straight games in an 81-66 loss to #17 Lebanon Valley College.  Moravian jumped out to an early lead and was ahead, 18-16, with 10:31 left in the first half but the Flying Dutchmen would eventually pull away for a 38-30 halftime lead.  Lebanon Valley shot 53.3 percent (16 of 30) in the first 20 minutes while Moravian made just 11 of 29 field goals (37.9 percent) with two three-pointers and six of eight free throws.  The Flying Dutchmen continued their hot shooting in the second half, making 13 of 24 field goals (54.2 percent) with four three-pointers and 13 of 16 free throws, while the Greyhounds shooting woes continued after the intermission with Moravian making just 11 of 35 field goals (31.4 percent) in the second half with two three-pointers and 12 of 14 free throws.  The Greyhounds had four players score in double figures with senior forward Brandon Zaleski (Hackettstown, NJ/Hackettstown HS) and freshman guard Ryan Miller (Easton, PA/Easton HS) each netting 12 points.  The 12 points gave Zaleski 1,701 in his career, just the second player in school history to reach that milestone while the total was a career high for Miller, who was six for six at the foul line.  Zaleski also added seven rebounds, three steals and two blocked shots while Miller had three assists.  Junior forward Steve Wenderfer (Chester, NJ/Mendham HS) added ten points to go with a game high eight rebounds while junior forward Ed Reid (Pen Argyl, PA/Pen Argyl HS) also tossed in ten points.  Junior forward Zach Zsilavecz (Bethlehem, PA/Liberty HS) had nine points and four rebounds for the Greyhounds while sophomore forward Matt Devlin (Sadsburyville, PA/Coatesville HS) added five points.

 

            Moravian suffered its fourth straight loss and fell to 2-2 in Commonwealth Conference action, falling to Juniata College, 86-66 in Huntingdon.  The Greyhounds had the lead several times in the first half including 26-25 with 3:36 remaining before intermission, but Juniata finished the half with a 9-3 run to take a 34-29 halftime lead.  Moravian shot 45.8 percent (11 of 24) from the field in the first 20 minutes with a pair of three-pointers and a five of nine performance at the foul line while Juniata shot just 36.4 percent (12 of 33) with four three-pointers and a perfect six of six at the charity stripe.  The Eagles forced Moravian into 11 first half turnovers while Juniata only had five turnovers in the game's first 20 minutes.  Juniata led the entire second half with the Greyhounds cutting to lead three points three different times in the first eight minutes of the half before the Eagles pulled away.  Juniata would shoot 61 percent (14 of 23) in the second half while the Greyhounds made just 11 of 31 second half field goals (35.5 percent).  Moravian did have a 43-22 advantage on the boards in the game.  The Greyhounds had just two players in double figures led by Zaleski, who had 23 points.  Zaleski also added seven rebounds and two assists.  Sophomore guard Michael Clemente (Toms River, NJ/Central Regional HS) netted a career high 11 points, and he added four assists and three rebounds.  Zsilavecz contributed eight points, four rebounds and two steals while Reid had nine points and five rebounds.  Devlin grabbed a career high nine rebounds to go with five points for the Greyhounds while freshman guard Justin Chestnut (Willow Grove, PA/Upper Moreland HS) and junior guard Chris Betley (Mt. Laurel, NJ/Lenape HS) each scored five points.  Betley also had four rebounds for Moravian.

Women’s Indoor Track & Field – 0-0 (Commonwealth Conference 0-0, MASCAC 0-0)

            Moravian, competing for the first time in over a month, finished 11th of 13 participating teams at the Great Dane Classic hosted by the University of Albany at the Armory Track & Field Center in New York City.  The Greyhounds scored 23 points while Northeastern University won the meet with 132 points.  Moravian was the only NCAA Division III school in the competition.  Senior Chelsea Mullins (Jim Thorpe, PA/Jim Thorpe HS) earned the Greyhounds eight points with a second place finish in the 5,000 meters in a time of 18:11.56 while senior Heather McGarvie (Medford, NJ/Shawnee HS) picked up six points in the mile run with a third place finish in 5:06.95.  Moravian received five points for senior Julie Anderson's (Bethlehem, PA/Liberty HS) fourth place finish in the 25-pound weight throw with a toss of 13.73 meters (45 feet, 1/2 inch).  The Greyhounds' final points came from senior Kirsten Rotzell's (Bangor, PA/Bangor HS) sixth place finish in the long jump with a leap of 5.47 meters (17 feet, 11 1/2 inches), worth three points, and junior Lynsey Boggess's (Washington Township, NJ/Immaculate Heart Academy HS) seventh place finish in the high jump, clearing 1.55 meters (five feet, one inch), which was worth one point.

 

            In other field events, sophomore Tammy Balliet (Whitehall, PA/Whitehall HS) placed 14th in the 25-pound weight throw with a toss of 9.43 meters while sophomore Kathleen McCarron (Nazareth, PA/Nazareth HS) was 16th in the triple jump with a distance of 10.25 meters (33 feet, 7 1/2 inches).  In other distance races, junior Alexis Vergalla (Glen Gardner, NJ/Voorhees HS) placed 11th in the 3,000-meter run with a time of 11:57.40.

 

            Sophomore Erin Recker (Catasauqua, PA/Catasauqua HS) was tenth in the preliminaries of the 55-meter dash in a time of 7.45 seconds, and she was 40th in the200-meter dash in 27.40 seconds.  Rotzell finished 34th in the 200 meters at 27.15 seconds while sophomore Suzanne Tamlyn (Wappingers Falls, NY/Wallkill HS) was 42nd in 27.51 seconds.  Sophomore Amy Reehil (Roselle, NJ/Roselle Catholic HS) took 22nd place in the 500-meter dash in 1:26.07 while senior Margaret Benny (Tamaqua, PA/Tamaqua HS) was 14th in the preliminaries of the 55-meter hurdles in 8.96 seconds.

 

            Moravian's 4x400-meter relay team of McGarvie, Benny, Reehil and Tamlyn finished 12th in a time of 4:12.58.

            The Greyhounds returned to action after more than a month off at the Great Dane Classic hosted by the University of Albany at the Armory Track and Field Center in New York City.  Moravian placed 12th of the 12 competing teams with four points while Monmouth University was first at 118 points.  The Greyhounds were the only NCAA Division III school at the meet.  Moravian's four points came on a fifth place finish by freshman Nate Dutile (Easton, PA/Easton HS) in the shot put with a toss of 14.86 meters (48 feet, nine inches). In other field events, junior Michael El Kazzaz (Easton, PA/Easton HS) placed tenth in the pole vault, clearing a height of 4.35 meters (14 feet, 3 1/4 inches).

 

            In the sprint events, senior Scott Silvoy (Bethlehem, PA/Bethlehem Catholic HS) placed 26th in the preliminaries of the 55-meter dash in 6.80 seconds, and Silvoy finished 22nd in the 200-meter dash at 23.05 seconds.  Sophomore Josh Kline (Reading, PA/Exeter HS) was 25th in the 200-meter dash in 23.54 seconds while freshman Ty Kern (Mohnton, PA/Governor Mifflin HS) took 20th place in the 400-meter dash with a time of 52.40 seconds.  In the 55-meter hurdles, sophomore Matt Bailey (Reading, PA/Reading HS) placed 15th in the preliminaries with a time of 8.01 seconds while freshman Nathaniel Tussey (Perkiomenville, PA/Boyertown HS) was 17th at 8.08 seconds.

 

            Moravian's 4x400 meter relay team of Kline, Bailey, Kern and senior Dan Corey (Fair Lawn, NJ/Glen Rock HS) placed 15th in a time of 3:33.07.
