Greyhound Weekly Update, January 24, 2005 (-2222-)

 

Women’s Basketball – 13-2 (Commonwealth Conference 5-0, MASCAC 7-2)

Last Week – Defeated *Albright College, 72-54; *Messiah College postponed until February 17th.  *Commonwealth Conference game

            Moravian improved its winning streak to seven consecutive games and remained undefeated at 5-0 in Commonwealth Conference action with a 72-54 victory over Albright College in a Commonwealth Conference contest.  Moravian has scored at least 72 points in all seven wins while allowing less than 60 points for the fifth time in six games.  The Greyhounds never trailed in the game and took control of the contest early with a 9-3 lead.  Moravian, which led 34-20 at halftime, shot 45 percent (13 of 29) from the field in the first half with two three-pointers and a six of ten performance at the foul line.  The Greyhounds shot just 42.3 percent (1 of 26) in the second half; however, Moravian sealed the victory with a 16 of 18 (89 percent) performance at the foul line after the intermission.  The Greyhounds had just two players score in double figures, led by junior forward Stephanie Seaman (Bethlehem, PA/Bethlehem Catholic HS), who netted a game high 21 points.  Seaman, who scored 15 points in the second half, also had seven rebounds, three steals and two assists.  Sophomore forward Kelly Applegate (Easton, PA/Wilson HS) added 14 points and a game high eight rebounds while sophomore guard Rachel Berlin (Bethlehem, PA/Freedom HS) and junior guard Dianna DeFiore (Hammonton, NJ/St. Joseph HS) each scored eight points.  Berlin also had five rebounds and three assists in the victory.  Junior guard Nicole Savino (Macungie, PA/Brandywine Heights HS) had six points off the bench while senior guard Jen Behagg (Hamburg, NJ/Pope John XXIII HS) added five points and four assists for the Greyhounds.

 

            The Greyhounds' Commonwealth Conference game at nationally-ranked Messiah College in Grantham, Pennsylvania was postponed due to inclement weather.  The game has been rescheduled for Thursday, February 17th at 6:00 p.m. in Grantham.

 

 

 

Men’s Basketball – 4-12 (Commonwealth Conference 2-3, MASCAC 4-5)

            The Greyhounds suffered their fifth straight loss and fell to 2-3 in Commonwealth Conference action, falling to Albright College, 83-67 in Johnston Hall.  The Lions sprinted out to a 9-0 lead in the first three minutes of the game and never trailed.  The closest Moravian would get in the first half was four points on three different occasions. Moravian shot 41.4 percent (12 of 29) from the floor in the first half with four three-pointers and a two of five performance at the foul line.  The Greyhounds committed just five turnovers in the first half while Albright had ten turnovers while shooting 50 percent (13 of 26) from the floor and 73.3 percent (11 of 15) at the foul line.  In the second half, the Lions maintained the lead the entire half with the closest Moravian getting was three points at 39-36 with 17:52 left in the contest.  Albright would extend its lead to double digits when the Greyhounds went through a six minute scoring drought in the middle of the half.  The Lions also shot 64.5 percent (20 of 31) from the floor in the second half with three three-pointers and three of five free throws. Albright also had a 43 to 23 advantage in rebounds in the game.  For Moravian in the second half, the Greyhounds shot 43 percent (12 of 28) with four three-pointers and a nine for 11 performance at the foul line.  Moravian had three players in double figures led by senior forward Brandon Zaleski (Hackettstown, NJ/Hackettstown HS), who had a game high 14 points to go with two rebounds.  Junior forward Steve Wenderfer (Chester, NJ/Mendham HS) added 13 points and four rebounds while freshman guard Ryan Miller (Easton, PA/Easton HS) added 11 points and five assists for the Greyhounds.  Sophomore forward Matt Devlin (Sadsburyville, PA/Coatesville HS) contributed nine points, all in the first half, and four rebounds while sophomore guard Michael Clemente (Toms River, NJ/Central Regional HS) had seven points, five rebounds, four assists and three steals for Moravian.  Junior forward Zach Zsilavecz (Bethlehem, PA/Liberty HS) added eight points.

 

            Moravian's Commonwealth Conference game at Messiah College in Grantham, Pennsylvania has been postponed due to inclement weather. The game has been rescheduled for Thursday, February 17th at 8:00 p.m. in Grantham.

            Senior Heather McGarvie (Medford, NJ/Shawnee HS) had the Greyhounds top finish at the Orange and Maroon Classic hosted by Susquehanna University, winning the 800-meter run in a time of 2:22.64.  Moravian had one other runner in the race with senior Kellie Smith (Perkasie, PA/Pennridge HS) placing 12th in 2:31.14.  In other distance races, freshman Emily Graney (Palisades, NY/Tappan Zee HS) was 14th in the 1,500-meter run with a time of 5:38.39.  Junior Lauren Bahnatka (West Chester, PA/Henderson HS) led a trio of Greyhounds in the 5,000 meters with an eighth place finish in a time of 19:59.28.  Senior Kim Bushner (Allentown, PA/Dieruff HS) was 12th in 20:28.09 while freshman Katie Pulizzano (Allentown, PA/William Allen HS) finished 15th in a time of 21:29.26.  Moravian won the distance medley relay with the team of McGarvie, Smith, senior Chelsea Mullins (Jim Thorpe, PA/Jim Thorpe HS) and sophomore Amy Reehil (Roselle, NJ/Roselle Catholic HS) posting a time of 12:46.14 with Moravian’s “B” team of junior Alexis Vergalla (Glen Gardner, NJ/Voorhees HS), sophomore Ashley McCuen (Horsham, PA/Hatboro-Horsham HS) and freshmen Theresa Zataveski (Quakertown, PA/Gwynedd Mercy Academy HS) and Krystyn Fenon (Palmerton, PA/Lehighton HS) taking fifth place at 13:47.05.

 

            In the sprint races, sophomore Erin Recker (Catasauqua, PA/Catasauqua HS) led a trio of Greyhounds in the finals of the 55-meter dash with a second place finish of 7.37 seconds.  Sophomore Kathleen McCarron (Nazareth, PA/Nazareth HS) was third in 7.57 seconds while sophomore Suzanne Tamlyn (Wappingers Falls, NY/Wallkill HS) placed sixth in 7.85 seconds after running a time of 7.80 seconds in the preliminaries.  Senior Margaret Benny (Tamaqua, PA/Tamaqua HS) was tied for eighth in the preliminaries of the 55-meter dash in 7.83 seconds.  Benny was fifth in the finals of the 55-meter hurdles with a time of 8.80 seconds while McCarron was ninth in the preliminaries at 9.42 seconds.  Recker also placed third in the 200-meter dash in 29.93 seconds while Tamlyn was fifth in 28.01 seconds.  Freshman Jessica Cianci (Sussex, NJ/Vernon Township HS) took 17th in the 200-meter dash in 29.45 seconds while freshman Kristen Wiggins (Tunkhannock, PA/Tunkhannock HS) was 21st at 29.76 seconds.  Freshman Ashlee Scarborough (Warrington, PA/Villa Joseph Marie HS) placed 19th in the 400-meter dash at 1:13.27.  Moravian had two teams compete in the 4x400-meter relay with the “A” team of Reehill, Benny, Tamlyn and McCarron finishing third in a time of 4:18.63 and the “B” squad of Smith, McGarvie, Zataveski and McCuen taking 11th at 4:37.41.

 

            In the field events, McCarron was tied for tenth in the high jump, clearing a height of four feet, six inches (1.37 meters.  Junior Rebecca Moore (Easton, PA/Easton HS) tied for fourth in the pole vault, clearing a height of nine feet, six inches (2.89 meters) while Cianci was sixth at nine feet (2.74 meters).  Zataveski tied for 15th in the long jump with a leap of 4.35 meters (14 feet, 3 ¼ inches) while Scarborough was tied for 22nd at 3.98 meters (13 feet, ¾ inch).  Sophomore Tammy Balliet (Whitehall, PA/Whitehall HS) took ninth in the 20-pound weight throw with a toss of 35 feet, seven inches (10.85 meters).

            Freshman Nathaniel Tussey (Perkiomenville, PA/Boyertown HS) had the Greyhounds top finish at the Orange and Maroon Classic hosted by Susquehanna University, winning the 55-meter hurdles in a time of 7.75 seconds.  Moravian had two other runners in the race with freshman Ty Kern (Mohnton, PA/Governor Mifflin HS) placing fourth in 8.12 seconds and sophomore Matt Bailey (Reading, PA/Reading HS) finishing fifth in a time of 8.18 seconds.  Senior Dan Corey (Fair Lawn, NJ/Glen Rock HS) had run a time of 8.67 in the preliminaries.  Bailey also finished second in the 200-meter dash in a time of 23.32 seconds while senior Scott Silvoy (Bethlehem, PA/Bethlehem Catholic HS) was fourth in 23.43 seconds and freshman Jim Bell (Mohnton, PA/Governor Mifflin HS) was 16th in 24.20 seconds.  Silvoy also placed eighth in the 55-meter dash in 6.74 seconds while Bell finished 9th at 6.77 seconds.  Freshman Ozzie Brown (Plymouth Meeting, PA/Plymouth Whitemarsh HS) was 14th in the 55-meter dash with a time of 6.83 seconds, and he was 14th in the 400-meter dash at 54.38 seconds.  Bell ran a time of 54.69 seconds in the 400-meter dash, good enough for 17th place, while sophomore Josh Kline (Reading, PA/Exeter HS) finished fifth in the 400-meter dash at 52.20 seconds.  Moravian’s 4x400-meter relay squad of Bailey, Kline, Kern and Corey placed sixth in a time of 3:35.39.

 

            In the distance events, junior Greg Rarick (Drums, PA/Hazleton HS) placed 24th in the 800-meter run in a time of 2:09.15, and he was 13th in the 1,500 meters at 4:19.78.  Freshman Erik Boyer (North Wales, PA/North Penn HS) placed 27th in the 800 meters at 2:10.68 while freshman Jeffrey Meltzer (Hillsborough, NJ/Hillsborough HS) was 33rd in 2:18.20 and Corey was 39th at 2:29.06.  Senior Patrick Grogan (Nazareth, PA/Notre Dame HS) finished 26th in the 1,500 meters with a time of 4:31.46.  Junior William Shimer (Bethlehem, PA/Liberty HS) placed seventh in the 5,000-meters with a time of 16:55.97 while freshman Timothy Pagano (Cherry Hill, NJ/Cherry Hill West HS) placed tenth at 17:07.71.

 

            In the field events, sophomore Steve Kondorossy (Belle Mead, NJ/Montgomery HS) was eighth in the 35-pound weight throw with a toss of 41 feet, five inches (12.62 meters) while freshman Rob Bernadyn (Mahanoy City, PA/Mahanoy Area HS) took 11th place with a distance of 39 feet, eight inches (12.09 meters).  Sophomore Patrick Callahan (Matawan, NJ/Matawan HS) was 15th in the shot put with a toss of 34 feet, two inches (10.41 meters).  In the jumps, freshman Erik Nielsen (Quakertown, PA/Quakertown HS) was tied for 12th in the high jump, clearing five feet, eight inches (1.73 meters).  Freshman Allan Fatzinger (Catasauqua, PA/Catasauqua HS) tied for tenth in the pole vault with a height of 12 feet, six inches (3.81 meters).  In the long jump, Corey was tied for 16th at 5.73 meters (18 feet, 9 ½ inches), Nielsen was 18th at 5.72 meters (18 feet, 9 ¼ inches) and sophomore Dominic Nigito (Bethlehem, PA/Allentown Central Catholic HS) was 23rd with a leap of 5.39 meters (17 feet, 8 ¼ inches).
