Greyhound Weekly Update, February 7, 2005 (-2222-)

 

Women’s Basketball – 17-3 (Commonwealth Conference 8-1, MASCAC 10-3)

            The Greyhounds had their ten-game winning streak snapped in a 78-70 loss at Widener University in Commonwealth Conference action.  The loss was Moravian's first of 2005, and also the team's first in conference play this season.  The Greyhounds took an early 5-2 lead, which would be their largest lead of the evening.  The game went back-and-forth with the Greyhounds gaining another three-point advantage at 17-14 with 13:16 to play in the first half.  The teams would continue to trade the lead in the first half with the Pioneers taking their largest lead of the first 20 minutes at 38-33 with 1:04 to play before the intermission.  Widener led 40-37 at halftime after shooting 16 of 32 (50 percent) from the floor with one three-pointer and seven of 11 at the foul line.  Moravian connected on 15 of 31 first half field goal attempts (48.4 percent) with three three-pointers and making all four of its free throw attempts.  In the second half, Widener would regain its five-point edge early in the half but the Greyhounds fought back to take a 45-44 lead with 15:58 remaining in the game.  The Pioneers jumped right back in front and held the lead for the rest of the game outside of a brief tie at 49-49 with 12:43 remaining.  The Greyhounds cut Widener's lead to 72-70 with 40 seconds left in the contest but the Pioneers scored the final six points for the 78-70 win.  Moravian shot just nine of 26 from the floor (34.6 percent) in the second half with two three-pointers, and the Greyhounds were 13 of 17 at the foul line (76.5 percent).  The Greyhounds, ranked eighth in the nation this week in free throw percentage at 73.8 percent, dropped to 3-3 on the season when shooting over 80 percent in a game.  Moravian shot 81.8 percent (17 of 21) versus Widener.  The Pioneers out shot Moravian in the second half, making 16 of 39 field goal attempts (41.0 percent) and six of nine free throws.  Widener, which had 19 turnovers to Moravian's 23, also out rebounded the Greyhounds, 42-33.  Moravian had three players reach double figures in the game with sophomore forward Kelly Applegate (Easton, PA/Wilson HS) scoring a team high 19 points.  Applegate added seven rebounds while sophomore forward Jenny Hackleman (Solvang, CA/Rutgers Prep {NJ} HS) had 15 points, seven rebounds and three assists.  Senior guard Jen Behagg (Hamburg, NJ/Pope John XXIII HS) netted 13 points to go with four rebounds, four assists and four steals.  Juniors forward Stephanie Seaman (Bethlehem, PA/Bethlehem Catholic HS) and guard Nicole Savino (Macungie, PA/Brandywine Heights HS) had eight points and three rebounds for Moravian.  Junior guard Lindsey Brase (Bethlehem, PA/Notre Dame HS) added three points, three rebounds and two blocked shots while sophomore guard Rachel Berlin (Bethlehem, PA/Freedom HS) had two points, two rebounds and two assists.  Sophomore guard Katie Rizman (Wall, NJ/St. Rose HS) added two points and three assists in the loss.

 

            Moravian bounced back from its first loss in a month and a half with a 71-45 victory over Juniata College in a Commonwealth Conference contest played in Johnston Hall.  The win also extends Moravian home winning streak to ten this season and 11 overall dating back to the 2003-04 postseason.  The Greyhounds, who remain in at least a tie for first place in the Commonwealth at 8-1, jumped out to an 8-0 lead and led the entire contest.  Juniata pulled within four points at 16-12 with 8:23 remaining in the first half, and the Eagles closed the game to 26-23 with ten seconds remaining in the first half before the halftime score of 27-23 for the Greyhounds.  Neither team shot well in the first half with Moravian making nine of 36 field goal attempts (25 percent) and just nine of 14 free throws (64.3 percent).  The Greyhounds committed 15 turnovers in the first half while forcing Juniata into 17 turnovers.  The Eagles made eight of 24 field goal attempts (33.3 percent) in the first 20 minutes with one three-pointer and six of eight free throws.  The closest Juniata would get in the second half was four points at 31-27 with 17:46 left before Moravian went on an 11-0 run to take control of the game.  The Greyhound lead would remain over ten points for the remainder of the game.  The Greyhounds picked up the shooting in the second half, making 16 of 41 field goal attempts (39 percent) with two three-pointers and ten of 13 free throws (76.9 percent).  Moravian committed 12 turnovers after the intermission while forcing Juniata into another 18 turnovers.  The Eagles made just six of 34 field goal attempts (17.6 percent) in the second half with a three-pointer and nine of 12 free throws.  Moravian also held a 58-46 advantage on the boards in the victory.  The Greyhounds had just two players reach double figures as the team scored over 70 points for the 12th straight game.  Applegate and Hackleman each netted 12 points to lead Moravian.  Applegate added eight rebounds while Hackleman had nine boards and three blocked shots.  Behagg and Rizman each had eight points in the victory with Behagg adding four steals, three assists and two rebounds and Rizman grabbing four boards.  Seaman had six points, seven rebounds, three assists and three steals while Savino added six points and four rebounds for Moravian.  Junior guard Dianna DeFiore (Hammonton, NJ/St. Joseph HS) had a career high six rebounds while adding five points, four assists and two steals in her first career start for the Greyhounds.  Berlin added five points, four rebounds and two steals in the win while Brase had four points for Moravian.  Junior forward Heather MacDonald (Wayne, NJ/Wayne Valley HS) added four rebounds.

            The Greyhounds suffered a 78-66 loss at Widener University in Commonwealth Conference action.  The loss drops Moravian to 4-4 in conference play this season.  The Greyhounds had their only lead of the game at 2-0 before Widener stormed ahead and took a 12 point lead at 24-12 with 9:21 left in the first half.  Moravian fought back and closed the game to 32-28 with 33 seconds remaining in the half before the Pioneers scored for a 35-28 halftime lead.  Moravian shot just 39.3 percent (11 of 28) from the field in the first half, and the Greyhounds were six of seven at the free throw line while committing nine turnovers.  Widener connected on 13 of 27 field goal attempts (48.1 percent) in the first half including six of ten behind the three-point line and a perfect three-for-three at the foul line.  In the second half, Widener would push its lead to 15 points four times in the half.  The Pioneers held a 66-54 lead with 5:14 remaining in the contest before Moravian went on a 10-0 run to cut the lead to 66-64 with 3:26 to play.  However, Widener finished the game with a 12-2 run for the victory.  Moravian shot better in the second half, making 16 of 30 field goal attempts (53.3 percent) including two three-pointers and four of five three-pointers.  Widener forced Moravian into 13 turnovers in the second half.  The Pioneers made 15 of 26 field goal attempts (57.7 percent) with two three-pointers and 11 of 18 free throw attempts in the second half.  Moravian did have a 38-24 advantage on the boards.  The Greyhounds had two players reach double figures with junior forward Steve Wenderfer (Chester, NJ/Mendham HS) netting a career high 26 points.  Wenderfer added ten points for his fifth double-double of the season.  Senior forward Brandon Zaleski (Hackettstown, NJ/Hackettstown HS) added 12 points and eight rebounds.  Freshman guard Ryan Miller (Easton, PA/Easton HS) added eight points and two rebounds for the Greyhounds while sophomore forward Matt Devlin (Sadsburyville, PA/Coatesville HS) had seven points and four boards.  Junior guard Chris Betley (Mt. Laurel, NJ/Lenape HS) had four points while sophomore guard Michael Clemente (Toms River, NJ/Central Regional HS) had three points for the Greyhounds.  Junior guard Ed Reid (Pen Argyl, PA/Pen Argyl HS) had five rebounds to go with two points.

 

            Moravian moved back over the .500 mark in Commonwealth Conference action, defeating Juniata College, 92-63, in Johnston Hall.  The Greyhounds improve to 5-4 in conference play with the victory, which was their third straight Commonwealth win in Johnston Hall.  Moravian jumped out to an early lead and would trail the Eagles just twice in the game with Juniata's final lead of 23-21 with 8:30 remaining in the first half.  The Greyhounds finished the first 20 minutes with a 21-9 run for a 42-32 halftime lead.  Moravian shot 48.1 percent (13 of 27) from the floor in the first half including four of eight behind the three-point line, and the Greyhounds were 12 of 15 from the charity stripe (80 percent).  Moravian committed just six turnovers in the first half while forcing Juniata into 11 turnovers.  The Eagles also shot 46.4 percent (13 of 28) from the field with two three-pointers and four free throws.  Moravian's lead never fell below seven points in the second half, and the Greyhounds had a 20-point lead or more for the final ten minutes.  Moravian made 16 of 31 field goal attempts (51.5 percent) in the second half with four three-pointers while connecting on all 14 free throw attempts after the intermission.  Juniata, however, only shot 35.7 percent (ten for 28) from the field in the second half with five three-pointers and six of ten free throws.  Moravian also had a 37-28 advantage on the boards in the victory.  The Greyhounds had three players in double figures led by Zaleski, who scored a game high 29 points.  During the first half, Zaleski became the second men's basketball player in school history to surpass 1,800 career points.  He currently has 1,818 points, just 48 points shy of the school record.  Zaleski, who made his final 17 free throw attempts after missing his first of the game, also added seven rebounds and four steals.  Junior forward Zach Zsilavecz (Bethlehem, PA/Liberty HS) had 12 points and four rebounds for the Greyhounds while Wenderfer contributed ten points, five rebounds and four assists.  Miller added eight points, five assists and four rebounds in the victory while Reid had eight points for the Greyhounds.  Clemente contributed seven points to the victory while junior guard Joe Depasquale (Forked River, NJ/ Lacey HS), Devlin and freshman forward Mark Franzyshen (Somerset, NJ/Immaculata HS) each scored four points.

            The Greyhounds had two student-athletes compete in the Muhlenberg College Pentathlon with freshman Theresa Zataveski (Quakertown, PA/Gwynedd Mercy Academy HS) finishing third with 2,128 points and freshman Ashlee Scarborough (Warrington, PA/Villa Joseph Marie HS) finishing fourth with 2,018 points.  There were a total of five competitors in the pentathlon.  Zataveski placed third in the 55-meter hurdles in 9.7 seconds, earning 596 points.  She was fourth in the high jump at 1.30 meters (four feet, 3 1/4 inches) for 409 points while finishing third the shot put at 6.10 meters (20 feet, 1/4 inch) for 278 points.  Zataveski was fourth in the long jump at 4.36 meters (14 feet, 3 3/4 inches), worth 393 points, and she was second in the 800-meter run at 2:50.9 for 452 points.  Scarborough placed fourth in the 55-meter hurdles in 10.3 seconds, earning 483 points.  She was fifth in the high jump at 1.27 meters (four feet, two inches) for 379 points while finishing second the shot put at 7.19 meters (23 feet, 7 1/4 inches) for 347 points.  Scarborough was second in the long jump at 4.64 meters (15 feet, 2 3/4 inches), worth 464 points, and she was fourth in the 800-meter run at 3:02.2 for 345 points.

 

            Moravian had 11 student-athletes and three relay teams compete at the 6th Annual Dick DeSchriver Invitational hosted by East Stroudsburg University of Pennsylvania.  The Greyhounds had five top-five individual and three top-five relay finishes in the competition and also set two school records.  Senior Margaret Benny (Tamaqua, PA/Tamaqua HS) took second in the 55-meter hurdles in a time of 8.70 seconds after running a time of 8.69 seconds in the preliminaries while junior Lynsey Boggess (Washington Township, NJ/Immaculate Heart Academy HS) took second in the high jump, clearing 1.62 meters (five feet, four inches).  Sophomore Erin Recker (Catasauqua, PA/Catasauqua HS) placed second in the 55-meter dash in a season best time of 7.34 seconds after a 7.37 time in the preliminaries while sophomore Suzanne Tamlyn (Wappingers Falls, NY/Wallkill HS) set the school record in the 50--meter run with a third place finish of 1:21.15.  Senior Heather McGarvie (Medford, NJ/Shawnee HS) was fourth in the 800-meter run in a time of 2:25.99.

 

            Sophomore Kathleen McCarron (Nazareth, PA/Nazareth HS) placed eighth in the preliminaries of the 55-meter dash in 7.62 seconds while senior Kirsten Rotzell (Bangor, PA/Bangor HS) was ninth at 7.66 seconds.  Boggess also posted a time of 8.26 seconds in the 55-meter dash preliminaries, finishing 23rd.  Benny ran a time of 1:25.51 in the 500-meter run, finishing sixth while sophomore Amy Reehil (Roselle, NJ/Roselle Catholic HS) was 11th in the 400-meter dash in 1:05.78.  Senior Kellie Smith (Perkasie, PA/Pennridge HS) was 11th in the 800-meter run in 2:32.27 while freshman Emily Graney (Palisades, NY/Tappan Zee HS) took 21st with a time of 2:48.48. Sophomore Tammy Balliet (Whitehall, PA/Whitehall HS) was 23rd shot put at 10.43 meters (34 feet, three inches).

 

            In the relay events, Moravian's 4x200-meter relay squad of Recker, Tamlyn, McCarron and Roztell set the school record with a time of 1:47.76, which placed fourth.  In the 4,000-meter distance medley relay, Moravian's 'B' squad of McGarvie, Reehil, Smith and senior Chelsea Mullins (Jim Thorpe, PA/Jim Thorpe HS) won the event in 12:32.22 while the 'A' team of Graney, freshman Krystyn Fenon (Palmerton, PA/Lehighton HS) and juniors Alexis Vergalla (Glen Gardner, NJ/Voorhees HS) and Lauren Bahnatka (West Chester, PA/Henderson HS) was fourth in 13:29.64.

            The Greyhounds had two student-athletes compete in the Muhlenberg College Pentathlon with senior Dan Corey (Fair Lawn, NJ/Glen Rock HS) finishing second with 2,940 points and freshman Erik Nielsen (Quakertown, PA/Quakertown HS) finishing third with 2,816 points.  There were a total of eight competitors in the pentathlon.  Corey placed second in the 55-meter high hurdles in 8.5 seconds, earning 667 points.  He was third in the long jump at 5.74 meters (18 feet, 10 inches) for 531 points while winning the shot put at 11.41 meters (37 feet, 5 1/4 inches) for 571 points.  Corey tied for second in the high jump at 1.82 meters (five feet, 11 1/2 inches), worth 644 points, and he was sixth in the 1,000-meter run at 3:14.5 for 527 points.  Nielsen tied for fifth in the 55-meter high hurdles in 9.5 seconds, earning 454 points.  He was second in the long jump at 6.05 meters (19 feet, 10 1/4 inches) for 597 points while placing fifth the shot put at 10.21 meters (33 feet, six inches) for 498 points.  Nielsen tied for fourth in the high jump at 1.76 meters (five feet, 9 1/4 inches), worth 593 points, and he won the 1,000-meter run at 2:58.8 for 674 points.

 

            Moravian had seven student-athletes and two relay teams compete at the 6th Annual Dick DeSchriver Invitational hosted by East Stroudsburg University of Pennsylvania.  Freshman Ozzie Brown (Plymouth Meeting, PA/Plymouth Whitemarsh HS) and sophomore Josh Kline (Reading, PA/Exeter HS) each had fifth place finishes for the Greyhounds in the competition.  Brown was fifth in the 55-meter hurdles in a time of 8.04 seconds after placing fourth in the preliminaries at 8.07 seconds.  Kline took fifth in the 500-meter run in 1:10.27.  Sophomore Matt Bailey (Reading, PA/Reading HS) ran a time of 8.25 seconds in the 55-meter hurdles, which placed him 11th, and Bailey was ninth in the 500-meter run in 1:11.36.  Freshman James Bell (Mohnton, PA/Governor Mifflin HS) took 16th in the preliminaries of the 55-meter dash in 6.85 seconds.

 

            In field events, freshman Robert Bernadyn (Mahanoy City, PA/Mahanoy Area HS) finished 12th in the 35-pound weight throw with a toss of 12.15 meters (39 feet, 10 1/2 inches).  Sophomore Patrick Callahan (Matawan, NJ/Matawan HS) was 23d in the shot put at 11.04 meters (36 feet, three inches) while freshman Nathaniel Dutile (Plymouth, ME/Nokomis HS) failed to record a distance in the competition.

 

            Moravian's 4x200-meter relay team of Bailey, Brown, Bell and Kline placed fourth in a time of 1:33.65 while the 4,000-meter distance medley relay squad of senior Patrick Grogan (Nazareth, PA/Notre Dame HS), Corey, freshman Erik Boyer (North Wales, PA/North Penn HS) and junior William Shimer (Bethlehem, PA/Liberty HS) finished ninth with a time of 11:22.25.
