Greyhound Weekly Update, February 14, 2005 (-2222-)

 

Women’s Basketball – 19-3 (Commonwealth Conference 10-1, MASCAC 12-3)

            The Greyhounds moved within one victory of clinching their fourth straight Commonwealth Conference Tournament appearance with a 77-62 win at Lebanon Valley College. The Greyhounds have now scored over 70 points for 13 straight games.  Lebanon Valley took a quick 2-0 and led 4-3 at the 17:16 mark of the first half before Moravian took the lead for good.  The Greyhounds would build a ten-point lead at 14-4 to cap an 11-0 run before the Flying Dutchmen cut the lead back to four points.  Moravian's largest lead of the first half would be 11 points at 31-20 and 33-22 with 37 seconds remaining in the first 20 minutes.  Lebanon Valley scored the final four points of the first half to cut the Greyhounds lead to 33-26 at halftime.  Moravian shot 50 percent (14 of 28) from the floor in the first half with one three-pointer and four of nine free throw attempts (44.4 percent).  The game would be close for the first eight minutes of the second half with Lebanon Valley cutting the Greyhound lead to two points at 38-36 with 14:55 remaining in the game.  Moravian pushed the lead back over ten points at the 10:52 mark at 52-41 and kept the lead in double figures for the rest of the game. Moravian made 13 of 28 field goal attempts (46.4 percent) in the second half with four three-pointers and 14 of 17 free throw attempts (82.4 percent) while committing just six turnovers in the second 20 minutes.  Moravian had a 44-30 advantage on the boards for the game.  Moravian had four players in double figures led by sophomore forward Kelly Applegate (Easton, PA/Wilson HS), who netted 16 points to go with nine rebounds and two assists.  Sophomore forward Jenny Hackleman (Solvang, CA/Rutgers Prep {NJ} HS) had 14 points, seven rebounds and two assists for the Greyhounds.  Junior forward Stephanie Seaman (Bethlehem, PA/Bethlehem Catholic HS) and sophomore guard Katie Rizman (Wall, NJ/St. Rose HS) each scored 13 points with Seaman adding ten rebounds for her fifth double-double of the season.  Seaman now has 509 career rebounds, the 11th player in Moravian history to reach 500 career rebounds.  Seaman also had three assists and two blocked shots while Rizman had three rebounds, two assists and two steals for Moravian.  Senior guard Jen Behagg (Hamburg, NJ/Pope John XXIII HS) led the Greyhounds with seven assists to go with five points and four rebounds while freshman guard Sara Steinman (Springfield, NJ/Jonathon Dayton HS) added five points.  Sophomore guard Rachel Berlin (Bethlehem, PA/Freedom HS) had four points and three boards for Moravian while junior guard Dianna DeFiore (Hammonton, NJ/St. Joseph HS) had four points in the victory.

 

            Moravian took control of first place in the Commonwealth Conference and clinched its fourth straight Commonwealth Tournament appearance and a home game in the semifinal round with a 71-64 victory over nationally ranked Messiah College in the home finale for the Greyhounds.  Moravian, which defeated the Falcons for the first time since February 17, 1999, breaking a streak of 12 consecutive losses to Messiah, is now 10-1 in Commonwealth action and has a one game lead over Messiah with three games to play.  Moravian also finishes the regular season at 11-0 in Johnston Hall.  The Falcons, who were ranked seventh in the nation in this week's D3hoops.com Top 25 poll and fifth in the country in the USA Today/ESPN/WBCA Coaches Top 25 Poll, took a 2-0 lead and the teams traded the lead for the first 11 minutes of the game.  Messiah's largest lead was 8-4 with 13:45 remaining while the Greyhounds largest lead was 14-10 at the 11:20 mark.  With the game tied at 19-19 with 8:35 left in the first half, Moravian went on a 14-0 run to take its largest lead of the game at 33-19 with 4:12 remaining before the intermission.  However, Messiah scored the final nine points of the half to cut the Greyhound lead to 33-28 at halftime.  In the first half, Moravian made 14 of 39 field goal attempts (35.9 percent) with two three-pointers and a three-for-three performance at the foul line.  To start the second half, Moravian would score six of the first eight points in the half to take a 39-31 lead at the 18:05 mark, however, Messiah responded with a 13-1 run to take a 44-40 lead with 12:33 remaining in the game.  Moravian would tie the score at 44-44 at the 11:54 mark before Messiah pulled ahead to 47-44 with 11:43 left in the contest, the Falcons final lead of the game.  Moravian ran off five straight points for a 49-47 lead at the 10:20 mark, and Messiah tied the game for the final time at 49-49 with 9:38 remaining.  The Greyhounds went on a 12-2 run to take a 61-51 lead with 3:37 left in regulation.  The Greyhounds made just eight of 25 field goal attempts (32 percent) while connecting on 22 of 26 free throws (84.6 percent).  Moravian, which has scored over 70 points in its last 14 games, also finished the contest with a 48-39 advantage on the boards. The Greyhounds had a balanced scoring attack with four players in double figures led by a career high 20 points from Hackleman.  Hackleman also pulled down a game high nine rebounds to go with two steals. Seaman added 15 points, six rebounds, a career high three blocked shots and two assists while Rizman tossed in 12 points to go with four rebounds and three assists.  Applegate had 11 points and five rebounds for Moravian in the victory while Behagg had eight assists, seven points and six rebounds.  The eight assists give Behagg 350 in her Moravian career, moving her into second in school history.  Junior guard Nicole Savino (Macungie, PA/Brandywine Heights HS) added four points, four rebounds and two steals off the bench for the Greyhounds in the win.

            The Greyhounds suffered a setback in the team's run at a Commonwealth Conference Tournament berth, falling to Lebanon Valley College, 59-51, in Commonwealth action.  Lebanon Valley jumped out to a 7-0 lead before the Greyhounds got on the board at the 16:08 mark.  The Flying Dutchmen led 30-13 at halftime after shooting 40.7 percent (11 of 27) from the field in the first half with three three-pointers and five of seven free throws.  Moravian made just six of 30 field goal attempts (20.0 percent) with one three-pointer.  Both teams committed seven turnovers in the first half.  In the second half, Lebanon Valley would extend the lead to 19 points at 43-24 with 13:10 left in the game.  The Greyhounds would go on a 14-0 run to pull within 43-38 with 6:31 remaining.  Moravian would eventually tie the game at 47-47 with 2:26 remaining in the contest before Lebanon Valley finished the game with a 12-4 run for the victory.  In the second half, the Greyhounds made 11 of 25 field goals (44 percent) with five three-pointers and 11 of 15 free throws while committing just four turnovers.  Lebanon Valley shot 34.6 percent (nine of 26) from the floor with two three-pointers and nine of 12 free throws in the second half.  The Flying Dutchmen, who also committed just four second half turnovers, had a 43-37 advantage on the boards in the game.  For the first time this season, Moravian did not have any players reach double figures in the game.  Sophomore guard Michael Clemente (Toms River, NJ/Central Regional HS) and freshman guard Justin Chestnut (Willow Grove, PA/Upper Moreland HS) each scored eight points and grabbed two rebounds.  Junior guard Ed Reid (Pen Argyl, PA/Pen Argyl HS) tossed in seven points and added six rebounds for the Greyhounds.  Junior forward Steve Wenderfer (Chester, NJ/Mendham HS) contributed six points, six rebounds and two assists. Senior forward Brandon Zaleski (Hackettstown, NJ/Hackettstown HS), junior guard Chris Betley (Mount Laurel, NJ/Lenape HS) and Zach Zsilavecz (Bethlehem, PA/Liberty HS) and sophomore forward Matt Devlin (Sadsburyville, PA/Coatesville HS) each had five points for Moravian.  Zaleski added five rebounds while Devlin had four boards.  Freshman guard Ryan Miller (Easton, PA/Easton HS) added a team high three assists.

 

            Moravian suffered another setback in the team's run at a Commonwealth Conference Tournament berth, falling to Messiah College, 77-71, in Commonwealth action.  The loss drops Moravian to 5-6 in conference play with three games to play.  The Greyhounds likely will need to win all three road games in the final week of the season to make the postseason.  The teams would trade the lead for the first few minutes of the game with the game tied at 6-6 at the 16:43 mark of the first half.  The Greyhounds went on a 9-0 run to take at 15-6 lead with 15:07 left in the first half.  Moravian would hold the lead for the remainder of the first half with Messiah cutting the deficit back to one point at 25-24 with 7:53 before the intermission.  The Greyhounds had a 38-34 lead at halftime after shooting 16 of 29 (55.2 percent) from the floor with four three-pointers and a two-for-three performance at the foul line.  Messiah made 14 of 31 (45.2 percent) first half field goal attempts with four three-pointers and a two-for-two performance at the foul line.  Moravian would extend its lead to eight points at 45-37 with 16:47 remaining in the game before Messiah started its comeback.  The Falcons went on an 11-3 run to tie the game at 48-48 with 12:45 left.  Messiah took the lead for good on a free throw by Jared Yoder at the 12:17 mark for a 49-48.  Moravian pulled within three points on several occasions in the final 11 minutes of the game but could not retake the lead.  Messiah made 11 of 26 field goals (42.3 percent) in the second half with five three-pointers and a 16-for-24 performance at the foul line.  Moravian would made 11 of 27 field goal attempts (40.7 percent) in the game's second 20 minutes with three three-pointers and an eight-for-14 performance at the foul line.  Messiah also had a 37-31 advantage on the boards in the Falcons win.  Moravian had just two players in double figures led by a game high 23 points by Zaleski.  Zaleski, who is now within 20 points of becoming the all-time leading scorer in Moravian history, also had seven rebounds and two assists.  Wenderfer added 21 points and a team high eight rebounds to go with two assists and two steals.  Reid had nine points and three rebounds while Miller and Clemente each scored five points for the Greyhounds.  Miller had three assists while Chestnut had six assists and three points for the Greyhounds.

            Senior Heather McGarvie (Medford, NJ/Shawnee HS) won the one mile run in a time of 5:08.82 to lead Moravian at the 17th Annual Bucknell University Winter Classic.  The Greyhounds also had eight other top five finishes including a first place finish by the 4,000-meter distance medley relay team of freshman Krystyn Fenon (Palmerton, PA/Lehighton HS), sophomore Ashley McCuen (Horsham, PA/Hatboro-Horsham HS) and juniors Rebecca Moore (Easton, PA/Easton HS) and Alexis Vergalla (Glen Gardner, NJ/Voorhees HS) in 13:55.30.  Moravian's 4x400-meter relay team of McGarvie, senior Margaret Benny (Tamaqua, PA/Tamaqua HS) and sophomores Amy Reehil (Roselle, NJ/Roselle Catholic HS) and Suzanne Tamlyn (Wappingers Falls, NY/Wallkill HS) set the school record with a time of 4:07.83 while finishing third.

 

            Sophomore Erin Recker (Catasauqua, PA/Catasauqua HS) placed fifth in the finals of the 60-meter dash in a school record time of 7.88 seconds, and Recker was fourth in the 200-meter dash in 26.37 seconds.  Senior Chelsea Mullins (Jim Thorpe, PA/Jim Thorpe HS) finished second in the 5,000-meter run with a time of 17:48.21, which provisionally qualified her for the NCAA Division III Indoor National Championships, while Benny took third in the 60-meter hurdles with a time of 9.37 seconds.  Senior Kirsten Rotzell (Bangor, PA/Bangor HS) placed fourth in the long jump with a leap of 5.35 meters (17 feet, 6 3/4 inches) while sophomore Kathleen McCarron (Nazareth, PA/Nazareth HS) was fifth in the long jump at 5.31 meters (17 feet, 5 1/4 inches).

 

            In other sprint events, McCarron was ninth in the preliminaries of the 60-meter dash in 8.15 seconds while Rotzell placed 12th at 8.21 seconds.  Tamlyn finished tenth in the 200-meter dash in 27.24 seconds while McCarron was 14th with a time of 27.55 seconds.  Tamlyn also took seventh in the 400-meter dash with a time of 1:00.86 while Benny was ninth at 1:03.15 and Moore was 13th in 1:05.57.  Freshman Theresa Zataveski (Quakertown, PA/Gwynedd Mercy Academy HS) placed 12th in the 500-meter run in 1:33.03.

 

            In other distance races, senior Kellie Smith (Perkasie, PA/Pennridge HS) was ninth in the mile run at 5:35.89, and she was also ninth in the 1,000-meter run in a time of 3:18.99. Fenon placed 14th in the 800-meter run in 2:33.74 while freshman Emily Graney (Palisades, NY/Tappan Zee HS) was 15th at 2:34.81 and Vergalla was 22nd with a time of 2:38.31.  Junior Lauren Bahnatka (West Chester, PA/Henderson HS) ran a time of 11:19.52 while placing eighth in the 3,000-meter run, and senior Kim Bushner (Allentown, PA/Dieruff HS) had a time of 11:36.52 to finish 14th in the same event.  Freshman Kate Pulizzano (Allentown, PA/William Allen HS) was eighth in the 5,000-meter run in 20:00.85.

 

            In the field events, freshman Jessica Cianci (Sussex, NJ/Vernon Township HS) tied for seventh in the pole vault at 2.95 meters (nine feet, eight inches) while senior Julie Anderson (Bethlehem, PA/Liberty HS) was sixth in the 20-pound weight throw with a toss of 13.28 meters (43 feet, seven inches).

            Freshman Ozzie Brown (Plymouth Meeting, PA/Plymouth Whitemarsh HS) and junior Michael El Kazzaz (Easton, PA/Easton HS) each captured first place in their events to lead Moravian at the 17th Annual Bucknell University Winter Classic.  Brown won the long jump with a lead of 6.83 meters (22 feet, five inches) while El Kazzaz was tied for first in the pole vault, clearing a height of 4.50 meters (14 feet, nine inches).

 

            The Greyhounds had eight other top five finishes in the meet with senior Scott Silvoy (Bethlehem, PA/Bethlehem Catholic HS) placing second in the 60-meter dash in 7.17 seconds.  Sophomore Josh Kline (Reading, PA/Exeter HS) took second in the 200-meter dash in 23.04 seconds, and Kline was also second in the 500-meter run in 1:09.73.  Brown placed fourth in the 60-meter hurdles with a time of 8.60 seconds while freshman Nathaniel Tussey (Perkiomenville, PA/Boyertown HS) was third at 8.57 meters. In the preliminaries of the 60-meter hurdles, Tussey was second with a time of 8.50 seconds while Brown was third at 8.54 seconds.  Freshman James Bell (Mohnton, PA/Governor Mifflin HS) placed fourth in the 60-meter dash in 7.21 seconds while freshman Allan Fatzinger (Catasauqua, PA/Catasauqua HS) was tied for fifth in the pole vault at 4.05 meters (13 feet, 3 1/2 inches).  Freshman Nathaniel Dutile (Plymouth, ME/Nokomis HS) placed fourth in the shot put with a toss of 13.82 meters (45 feet, 4 1/4 inches).

 

            Tussey also ran a time of 7.63 seconds to place 25th in the preliminaries of the 60-meter dash while Brown had a time of 23.35 to finish eighth in the 200-meter dash.  Bell was 15th in the 400-meter dash in a time of 54.54 seconds while freshman Erik Nielsen (Quakertown, PA/Quakertown HS) finished 17th at 56.70 seconds.  Freshman Ty Kern (Mohnton, PA/Governor Mifflin HS) was tenth in the preliminaries of the 60-meter hurdles in 8.75 seconds.

 

            In the distance events, junior Greg Rarick (Drums, PA/Hazleton HS) was 12th in the mile run with a time of 4:35.36, and he placed 14th in the 1,000-meter run at 2:45.00.  Senior Patrick Grogan (Nazareth, PA/Notre Dame HS) was 18th in the mile with a time of 4:49.61 while junior Will Shimer (Bethlehem, PA/Liberty HS) placed 11th in the 3,000-meter run in 9:39.90.  Freshman Jeffrey Meltzer (Hillsborough, NJ/Hillsborough HS) took 21st place in the 800-meter run with a time of 2:10.77.

 

            In field events, freshman Robert Bernadyn (Mahanoy City, PA/Mahanoy Area HS) was seventh in the 35-pound weight throw with a toss of 11.38 meters (37 feet, four inches.  Senior Dan Corey (Fair Lawn, NJ/Glen Rock HS) was tied for sixth in the high jump at 1.76 meters (five feet, 9 1/4 inches) and 11th in the long jump at 5.78 meters (18 feet, 11 3/4 inches).
