Greyhound Weekly Update, March 7, 2005 (-2222-)

            Moravian, the top seed in the 2005 Eastern College Athletic Conference Division III Women's Southern Championship Tournament, advanced to the semifinals with an 81-55 victory over eighth seeded Wesley (DE) College in a quarterfinal game at Johnston Hall. Moravian scored the first two points of the game and Wesley tied the contest at 2-2 1:16 into the game. The Greyhounds, who never trailed again, ran off six straight points for an 8-2 lead at the 16:49 mark. The Greyhounds, who led by as many as 21 points in the first half, had a 43-24 halftime advantage. Moravian shot 51.4 percent (18 of 35) from the field in the first half with two three-pointers and a five of eight performance at the foul line. Moravian would enjoy at least a 20 point lead for most of the second have, pushing the advantage to 30 points at 61-31 with 12:21 to play in the game. Moravian finished the game with a 60-38 edge in rebounds, and the Greyhounds had all 15 players in uniform play at least four minutes in the game and score at least one point in the victory. Moravian also put three players in double figures led by sophomore forward Jenny Hackleman (Solvang, CA/Rutgers Prep {NJ} HS), who scored 14 points, 12 in the first half, to go with eight rebounds. Sophomore forward Kelly Applegate (Easton, PA/Wilson HS) added a double-double for Moravian with 13 points and a career high tying 12 rebounds while junior forward Stephanie Seaman (Bethlehem, PA/Bethlehem Catholic HS) had 12 points, ten of them in the first half, and eight rebounds. Junior forward Lindsay Brase (Bethlehem, PA/Notre Dame HS) netted nine points in the victory for the Greyhounds while sophomore guard Katie Rizman (Wall, NJ/St. Rose HS) contributed eight points and four rebounds. Sophomore guard Rachel Berlin (Bethlehem, PA/Freedom HS), junior forward Heather MacDonald (Wayne, NJ/Wayne Valley HS) and freshman guard LaToya Blake (Allentown, PA/Dieruff HS) each scored four points with Berlin adding four rebounds. MacDonald grabbed six boards while Blake had two steals for Moravian. Senior guard Jen Behagg (Hamburg, NJ/Pope John XXIII HS) led the Greyhounds with six assists to go with three points, three rebounds and two blocked shots. Freshman guard Sara Steinman (Springfield, NJ/Jonathan Dayton HS) also netted three points while dishing out three assists for Moravian.

 

            The Greyhounds advanced to the championship game for the first time since 1987 with a 79-63 victory over fourth seeded the University of Pittsburgh at Greensburg in a semifinal game at Johnston Hall. The Greyhounds, who led 36-32 at halftime, were trailing 27-21 with 6:21 remaining in the first half before going on a 23-5 run the went into the second half and gave Moravian a 45-32 lead with 17:37 remaining in the game. At halftime, Moravian had made 14 of 33 field goal attempts (42.4 percent) with four three-pointers and just four of nine free throws. Moravian made 12 of 25 field goal attempts in the second half (48 percent) with five three-pointers, and the Greyhounds were 14 of 19 at the charity stripe after the intermission. Pitt-Greensburg made just ten of 32 field goals in the second half with four three-pointers and a seven for 13 performance at the foul line. The Greyhounds had four players in double figures led by Berlin's game high 19 points. Berlin, who was four-for-four behind the three-point line, also had four assists for the Greyhounds. Hackleman and Applegate each had double-doubles for Moravian in the win. Hackleman contributed 16 points, ten boards, three assists and two blocked shots while Applegate had 14 points, ten rebounds, three assists and three blocked shots. Rizman tossed in 12 points for Moravian to go with three steals and two assists while Seaman just missed a double-double with a game high 11 rebounds and eight points. Behagg contributed six points, five rebounds and four assists while junior guard Nicole Savino (Macungie, PA/Brandywine Heights HS) contributed four points, three rebounds and two steals in the victory. Brase had three rebounds while Steinman contributed two boards and an assist in the win for the Greyhounds.

 

            Moravian suffered through its worst shooting performance of the season, falling to second seeded DeSales University, 67-45, in the title game of the 2005 ECAC Southern Championship Tournament. The Greyhounds complete their 2004-05 season with a record of 24-6. The Greyhounds made just seven of 27 first half field goal attempts (25.9 percent) with one three-pointer and a ten for 13 performance at the foul line in the first half. The Greyhounds made just eight of 29 second half field goal attempts (27.6 percent) and four of six free throws after the intermission. Moravian shot under 30 percent from the field for the only time in the 2004-05 season in the game, making a total of 15 of 56 field goal attempts (26.8 percent). The 45 points Moravian scored was also the lowest point total of the season for the Greyhounds, who were ranked in the top 35 nationally this week in scoring average. Moravian had just one player score in double figures against DeSales with Applegate netting 15 points. Applegate also had seven rebounds and two steals while Seaman had eight points, three rebounds and two steals. Hackleman, Brase and junior guard Dianna DeFiore (Hammonton, NJ/St. Joseph HS) each scored six points for Moravian with Hackleman grabbing a team high nine rebounds. Berlin tossed in three points and had three rebounds and two assists for the Greyhounds while Behagg had five assists, four rebounds and two steals in her final collegiate game. Behagg finishes her Moravian career second in school history with 385 assists. Rizman and Savino each grabbed three rebounds for the Greyhounds with Rizman adding two steals.

            Moravian opened its 2005 season with a 2-0, eight inning loss to host Virginia Wesleyan College at the Atlantic versus East Challenge in Virginia Beach, Virginia. The Greyhounds had just four hits in the game, including two singles by senior second baseman Leah Holmes (Clarks Green, PA/Abington Heights HS). Sophomore first baseman Lauren Homa (Chalfont, PA/Central Bucks West HS) and sophomore outfielder LeeAnna Roberts (Meshoppen, PA/Elk Lake HS) each had singles in the game. Junior pitcher Meagan Hennessy (Freehold, NJ/Freehold Township HS) tossed a one-hitter and struck out nine batters. Hennessy, who was not charged with the loss because the winning run scored due to the international tiebreaker, did allow one walk and one earned run in the game.

 

            The Greyhounds earned their first victory of the 2005 season with a 3-1 win over Chowan (NC) College at the Atlantic versus East Challenge. Moravian took a 1-0 lead in the top of the fifth inning on an RBI single by sophomore designated player Rebecca DeJulio (Vineland, NJ/Sacred Heart HS) that scored Roberts. The Greyhounds extended their lead to 3-0 in the top of the sixth inning on a RBI singles by sophomore catcher Danielle Carrione (Bloomfield, NJ/Mt. St. Dominic HS), which scored senior pinch runner Stephanie Eddinger (Allentown, PA/Parkland HS), and freshman shortstop Beth Paly (Whitehall, PA/Whitehall HS), which plated Carrione. Moravian had 11 hits in the game with two each from Carrione, Paly and freshman third baseman Kelly Santry (Hatboro, PA/Upper Moreland HS). Santry also had a double in the victory. Freshman Meagan Ritchey (Boyertown, PA/Boyertown HS) earned her first victory in the circle for Moravian, allowing no runs, three hits and four walks while striking out one batter in four-plus innings. Hennessy came on in relief in the fifth inning with the bases loaded and got out of the jam. Hennessy, who picked up her first save of the year, did allow an unearned run and a walk while striking out a batter in three innings of work.

 

            Moravian earned its second straight victory at the Atlantic versus East Challenge, opening the second day of the tournament with a 6-0 victory over Frostburg State (MD) University. The Greyhounds jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning on RBI singles by junior designated player Richelle McWilliams (Riegelsville, PA/Wilson HS), which scored Holmes, Santry that plated McWilliams and Carrione, which scored sophomore outfielder Justina Black (Orefield, PA/Parkland HS). Moravian extended the lead to 4-0 in the bottom of the second on an RBI single by Roberts that scored senior outfielder Krissy Cianfichi (Warrington, PA/Central Bucks East HS). Moravian would score again in the fourth inning with Roberts driving in Cianfichi with another RBI single. The Greyhounds final run came in the bottom of the fifth inning when Carrione doubled with two outs and scored on an RBI single by Paly. Moravian pounded out 13 hits in the game with Carrione, Cianfichi and Roberts each collecting two hits. Hennessy earned her first victory of the year in the circle, allowing just two hits and three walks in six innings of work. Hennessy also struck out six batters. Ritchey tossed the final inning of the game, allowing a walk.

 

            Moravian saw its record fall to 2-2 after a 1-0 loss to Christopher Newport (VA) University in Virginia Beach, Virginia. The game was scoreless until the Captains pushed the only run of the game across the plate in the top of the seventh inning. The Greyhounds had several chances to score in the game, having a runner thrown out at the plate in the fourth inning and leaving runners at third base in the sixth inning and at second base in the second, third, fourth and fifth innings. Moravian had nine hits in the game with Black going three-for-three. Senior shortstop Heather Bortz (Allentown, PA/Parkland HS) and Carrione each had two hits with Bortz adding a double. Hennessy suffered her first loss of the season, allowing just one earned run on four hits and three walks while striking out seven batters.

 

            The Greyhounds won their final game on their spring trip to Virginia Beach, Virginia, with an 11-0, five-inning victory over Peace (NC) College. Moravian jumped out to a 6-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning. Homa, Carrione and Cianfichi each had RBI singles in the inning while Ritchey drove in a pair of runs with an RBI double. Moravian's other run of the inning scored on an error. The Greyhounds extended the lead to 10-0 in the second inning on RBI singles by Paly and Cianfichi and a two-RBI double by Bortz. Moravian scored its final run in the fourth inning when Paly scored on a Peace throwing error. The Greyhounds pounded out 11 hits in the game with two each by Bortz, Carrione, Cianfichi and Paly. Ritchey earned her second win of the season after allowing seven walks with no hits and four strikeouts in three innings of work. Roberts tossed two scoreless innings in the game, giving up two hits and a walk while striking out one batter.

This Week – Fri. & Sat., Mar. 11th & 12th at 2005 NCAA Division III Indoor National Championships hosted by Illinois Wesleyan College, Bloomington, IL

 

            The Greyhounds had just one competitor at the Trinity (CT) College Last Chance Meet at Yale University with senior Margaret Benny (Tamaqua, PA/Tamaqua HS) winning the 55-meter hurdles in 8.56 seconds.  Benny's final time met the NCAA Division III provisional qualifying time and improved on her season best time by three-one hundredths of a second.  The time also improved her chances of making the field for the NCAA Division III Indoor National Championships next weekend.  Benny ran a time of 8.63 seconds in the preliminary race.

            The Greyhounds sent two competitors to the Trinity (CT) College Last Chance Meet at Yale University to improve their standing for next weekend's NCAA Division III Indoor National Championships.  Freshman Nathaniel Tussey (Perkiomenville, PA/Boyertown HS) placed fourth in the 55-meter hurdles in a time of 7.82 seconds after running a 7.88 second race in the preliminaries.  Classmate Ozzie Brown (Plymouth Meeting, PA/Plymouth Whitemarsh HS) finished fifth in the long jump with a leap of 6.69 meters (21 feet, 11 1/2 inches).

            Moravian had its season opening match with Ursinus College postponed one day, giving the Greyhounds two matches on Monday, March 7th to open the 2005 season.

            Moravian's 2005 season opener and Commonwealth Conference opener versus Juniata College in Chandler, Arizona was postponed due to inclement weather. The game will be played on March 7th at 6:00 p.m. PST.

 

            The Greyhounds finally opened their 2005 season with a 6-3 loss to Juniata College in the first game of a Commonwealth Conference doubleheader in Chandler, Arizona. Juniata jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the top of the first inning and led 5-0 after four innings. Moravian scored its first run of the season and game in the bottom of the fifth inning when senior third baseman Chris Benigno (Howell, NJ/St. Rose HS) scored on an error. The Greyhounds would pull within 5-3 in the bottom of the sixth inning when junior first baseman Richie Cline (Union Beach, NJ/Keyport HS) scored on an RBI sacrifice fly by freshman outfielder Josh Baltz (Easton, PA/Easton HS) and junior designated hitter Bryan Wolf (Nazareth, PA/Nazareth HS) scored on an error. The Eagles added a run in the top of the seventh inning for the 6-3 final score. Moravian had five hits in the game with two by Cline. Senior pitcher Chris Clancy (Kendall Park, NJ/Bishop Ahr HS) suffered the loss for Moravian on the mound, allowing five runs, just four earned runs, on nine hits and four walks in six innings of action. Clancy also struck out three batters. Freshman pitcher Brett Stout (Easton, PA/Easton HS) tossed the final inning of the game, allowing a run on a hit and a walk with one strikeout.

 

            Moravian dropped the second game of its Commonwealth Conference doubleheader with Juniata College in Chandler, Arizona, by a score of 7-4. The Eagles took a 1-0 lead in the fourth inning and lead 2-0 after five and a half innings. The Greyhounds tied the game at 2-2 in the bottom of the sixth inning on an RBI double by sophomore shortstop Pete Moore (Bogota, NJ/Bogota HS), that scored junior catcher Adam White (Bernville, PA/Tulpehocken HS), who had doubled, and an RBI sacrifice fly by Clancy that drove in Moore. Juniata would score five times in the top of the seventh with a grand slam home run and a solo homer to take a 7-2 lead. Moravian got two runs right back in the bottom of the seventh inning on a solo home run by Benigno, and the Greyhounds would load the bases after Beningo's homer with just one out; however, Moravian was unable to score again. The Greyhounds had eight hits in the game with three by Moore and two each by White and senior outfielder Mike Trimble (Bethlehem, PA/Bethlehem Catholic HS). Senior pitcher Steve Tomaszewski (Bethlehem, PA/Bethlehem Catholic HS) tossed six innings, allowing two runs on four hits and four walks while striking out two batters. Stout pitched the seventh inning for Moravian and took the loss on the mount. Stout allowed five runs with just two earned on three hits.
