This Week – Sat., Mar. 19th
vs. Haverford College (DH), 1:00 p.m.
Moravian opened the 2005 Salisbury Seagull Invitational
in Salisbury, Maryland with a 1-0, eight inning victory
over Oneonta State University of New York. The game was a battle of two teams
ranked in the 2005 National Fastpitch Coaches
Association Division III Preseason Top 25 as the Greyhounds were tied for 2nd
in the poll while Oneonta State was ranked 23rd. Moravian scored the lone run
in the game in the bottom of the eighth inning. Senior shortstop Heather Bortz (Allentown,
PA/Parkland
HS) was placed on second base to start the inning with the international
tiebreaker rule. After a sacrifice bunt by sophomore outfielder/third baseman LeeAnna Roberts (Meshoppen, PA/Elk Lake HS) moved Bortz
to third, sophomore catcher Danielle Carrione (Bloomfield,
NJ/Mt. St.
Dominic HS) delivered an RBI single up the middle to score Bortz. Carrione had three of Moravian's
six hits in the game. Junior pitcher Meagan
Hennessy (Freehold, NJ/Freehold Township HS) improved to 2-1 on the season,
allowing just a double to lead off the fourth inning for Oneonta State.
Hennessy also walked one batter and
recorded 12 strikeouts in the victory.
The Greyhounds earned their third straight victory,
defeating Christopher Newport (VA) University, 2-1, in the team's second game
on the first day of the Salisbury Seagull Invitational in Salisbury, Maryland.
The game pitted two of the top teams in the nation as Moravian was tied for
second in the 2005 NFCA Division III Preseason Top 25 Poll while Christopher
Newport received votes in the poll. It was also the second time in a week that
the team's played with Moravian avenging a 1-0 loss to the Captains last Sunday.
The Greyhounds jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the top of the fifth inning when
sophomore first baseman Lauren Homa (Chalfont, PA/Central Bucks West HS) led off the
inning with a single and would later score from second base on an error by
Christopher Newport on a ball hit by senior outfielder Krissy Cianfichi (Warrington, PA/Central Bucks East
HS). The Captains tied the contest at 1-1 in the bottom of the fifth.
Moravian would take the lead for good in the top of the sixth inning on a solo
home run to left field by sophomore outfielder Justina Black (Orefield, PA/Parkland HS), her first career homer for the
Greyhounds. Moravian had nine hits in the game led by three from Bortz, giving her 199 hits for her
career. Homa
and Roberts each had two hits in the
game. Hennessy picked up her third
win of the season in the circle while breaking Amy Croll's career strikeout record. Hennessy allowed an earned run on three
hits while walking three batters. Hennessy
had a total of 11 strikeouts in the game with her eighth of the contest, which
came in the sixth inning, gave Hennessy
375 career strikeouts for the Greyhounds, surpassing Croll's previous record of 374
set from 1994 until 1997.
Moravian won its fourth straight game, defeating
Lynchburg (VA) College, 8-0 in six innings, to open the second day of the
Salisbury Seagull Invitational. The Greyhounds jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the
bottom of the second inning on RBI singles by Cianfichi and Roberts that scored Homa and senior designated
player Leah Holmes (Clarks Green,
PA/Abington Heights HS). During the second inning, Bortz reached on a bunt single, the 200th hit of her Moravian
career. Bortz becomes the first
Greyhound to reach 200 hits in a career. Moravian extended its lead to 5-0 with
three runs in the bottom of the fourth inning. Black drove in Cianfichi with an RBI ground out while freshman second
baseman Beth Paly
(Whitehall, PA/Whitehall HS) had a
two-RBI single to score Bortz and Carrione.
Moravian would institute the NCAAs eight-run rule
with three more runs in the bottom of the sixth inning for the 8-0 win. Homa started the
scoring in the sixth with an RBI double that scored freshman pinch runner Keri Traficante
(Chalfont, PA/Central Bucks West HS). Homa and senior pinch hitter Stephanie Eddinger (Allentown,
PA/Parkland
HS) would score on a two-RBI double by Paly. Moravian had ten hits in
the game with Homa
going three-for-three. Bortz, Cianfichi and Paly each had
two hits in the victory. Hennessy
improved to 4-1 on the season with her second shutout of the year. Hennessy scattered three hits and
allowed just two walks while striking out nine batters in the victory.
The Greyhounds closed out their trip to the Salisbury Seagulll Invitational with a 3-1, nine-inning loss to host
Salisbury (MD) University. The game was a battle between the two teams tied for
second in the nation in the 2005 National Fastpitch
Coaches Association Division III Preseason Top 25 Poll. The game was scoreless
after the regulation seven innings, so the two schools began the international
tiebreaker rule of starting an inning with a runner on second base in the
eighth inning. Neither team was able to push around a run in the eighth inning.
Moravian began the top of the ninth inning with Roberts on second base. Roberts
was moved to third base on a sacrifice bunt by Carrione. After a strikeout, Roberts scored when Homa reached on an error. Salisbury would have
runners at first and third with two outs in the bottom of the ninth inning when
the Seagulls hit a three-run home run to end the game. Moravian had just four
hits. Hennessy allowed six hits, two
runs and one walk while striking out six batters. The runner that scored after
being placed on second base by the international tiebreaker rule is not charged
to the pitcher. It is an unearned run charged to the team.
