Greyhound Weekly Update, March 21, 2005 (-2222-)

 

Softball – 8-3 (Commonwealth Conference 0-0, MASCAC 0-0)

            Moravian opened its 2005 home season with a doubleheader sweep of Haverford College, 3-0 and 2-1, in a non-conference action at Blue & Grey Field Saturday afternoon.  The Greyhounds took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the fifth inning of the first game when sophomore catcher Danielle Carrione (Bloomfield, NJ/Mt. St. Dominic HS) hit a sacrifice fly to score senior outfielder Krissy Cianfichi (Warrington, PA/Central Bucks East HS), who had led off the inning with a bunt single. Moravian scored its other two runs in the bottom of the sixth inning. Freshman outfielder Beth Paly (Whitehall, PA/Whitehall HS) led off the inning with a double before junior Richelle McWilliams (Riegelsville, PA/Wilson HS) came on as a pinch hitter and hit a two-run home run to right field, her first homer of the season. Moravian had eight hits in the game including two by senior shortstop Heather Bortz (Allentown, PA/Parkland HS). Junior pitcher Meagan Hennessy (Freehold, NJ/Freehold Township HS) improved to 5-2 on the season, allowing just one hit and one walk while striking out 14 batters in her third shutout of the season. The game was Hennessy's third one-hitter of the season, and the 14 strikeouts give Hennessy 407 in her career, the first player in Moravian history to strikeout over 400 batters.

 

            The Fords scored their only run of the second game in the top of the first inning to take a 1-0 lead. Moravian tied the contest in the bottom of the third inning when Paly led off the inning with a single and came around to score on an infield single by Cianfichi. The Greyhounds eventually took the lead in the bottom of the fifth inning when sophomore third baseman LeeAnna Roberts (Meshoppen, PA/Elk Lake HS) led off the stanza with a solo home run to right field, her first collegiate homer. Moravian was limited to three hits in the game with one each by Paly, Cianfichi and Roberts. Freshman pitcher Megan Ritchey (Boyertown, PA/Boyertown HS) improved to 3-0 in the circle for the Greyhounds, allowing a run on two hits and a walk while striking out three batters in her home debut.

 

 

 

Men’s Tennis – 2-2 (Commonwealth Conference 1-0, MASCAC 1-0)

            Moravian opened its 2005 home season with a 6-1 loss to rival Muhlenberg College in a non-conference match played in Breidegam Fieldhouse due to cold temperatures. The Greyhounds' lone point came in a three-set win at fourth singles by junior Sean Lynch (West Chester, PA/Henderson HS). Moravian did win one doubles match with a victory by the tandem of senior Mike Helmuth (Bethlehem, PA/Harrisonburg {VA} HS) and junior Neil Caniga (Hampton, NJ/Voorhees HS) at first doubles, however, the Mules won the other two doubles contests to earn the doubles point.

 

            The Greyhounds began the 2005 Commonwealth Conference season with a 4-3 victory over Juniata College at Hoffman Courts. Moravian led 1-0 after doubles with victories by the team of Caniga and Helmuth and the tandem of sophomore Scott Shelbo (Bethlehem, PA/Freedom HS) and Lynch. The Greyhounds also won three singles matches to seal the win with straight sets victories by Caniga, Helmuth and Lynch.

            The Greyhounds have completed their 2005 indoor season and will begin the 2005 outdoor season on Saturday, April 2nd at the Lafayette College Invitational in Easton.

            Moravian opened its 2005 home season with a 7-5 victory over Haverford College in non-conference action at Gillespie Field. The Fords jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the top of the fourth inning. The Greyhounds responded with a pair of runs in the bottom of the fourth to take the lead for good. Senior outfielder Steve Tomaszewski (Bethlehem, PA/Bethlehem Catholic HS) hit a one-out double and moved to third on a single by junior first baseman Richie Cline (Union Beach, NJ/Keyport HS). Freshman outfielder Josh Baltz (Easton, PA/Easton HS) delivered an RBI double to left field to score Tomaszewski while Cline would score on an RBI ground out by junior designated hitter Bryan Wolf (Nazareth, PA/Nazareth HS). The Greyhounds added five runs in the bottom of the sixth inning. Tomaszewski led off the inning with a single. Baltz followed with a one-out walk, and Wolf also drew a walk to lead the bases. Senior infielder/pitcher Chris Benigno (Howell, NJ/St. Rose HS) hit an RBI single to score Tomaszewski before junior second baseman Andrew Wayne (Hillsborough, NJ/Hillsborough HS) hit a sacrifice fly to score Baltz. Junior catcher Andrew White (Bernville, PA/Tulpehocken HS) drew a walk to load the bases again. Sophomore shortstop Pete Moore (Bogota, NJ/Bogota HS) hit a two-RBI single to right field to score senior pinch runner Adam Goetz (Dunellen, NJ/Rutgers Prep HS) and Benigno while White scored on an error. Haverford added three runs in the top of the seventh inning and another tally in the ninth inning to finish off the scoring. Moravian had just seven hits in the game including two by Tomaszewski. Junior John Howarth (Livingston, NJ/Livingston HS) tossed the first three innings for the Greyhounds, allowing one hit and striking out one batter. Freshman Todd Remaley (Lehighton, PA/Lehighton HS) earned his first win of the season, allowing an unearned run, a hit and a walk while striking out four batters in three innings of action. Freshman Matthew Swartz (Dunmore, PA/Dunmore HS) threw one inning for Moravian, allowing three runs on two hits and two walks. Benigno finished off the game on the mound for the Greyhounds earning his first save of the season. Benigno allowed a run on three hits.

 

            The Greyhounds dropped their fourth Commonwealth Conference game of the season, falling to Albright College, 12-2, in the first game of a three-game Commonwealth series with the Lions. Albright took a 4-0 lead in the bottom of the second inning, and the Lions led 7-0 before Moravian got on the scoreboard in the top of the sixth inning on a solo home run by Moore, his first homer of the season. Albright added two runs in the bottom of the sixth inning, a single run in the seventh inning and two more runs in the eighth inning. The Greyhounds closed out the scoring in the top of the ninth inning on a pinch hit home run by sophomore Marc Panepinto (Perkiomenville, PA/Boyertown HS), his first collegiate home run. Moravian did have nine hits in the game with senior outfielder Mike Trimble (Bethlehem, PA/Bethlehem Catholic HS) and Cline each having two hits. Senior pitcher Chris Clancy (Kendall Park, NJ/Bishop Ahr HS) fell to 0-3 on the mound this season for the Greyhounds. Clancy allowed nine runs, eight of them earned, on nine hits and six walks with six strikeouts. Swartz pitched the final two innings allowing three runs, two of them earned, on five hits and two walks while striking out one batter.

 

            Moravian split a Commonwealth Conference doubleheader with Albright College, losing the first game, 6-3, and winning the second game, 6-4, at Gillespie Field. The Greyhounds jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning of the first game on a two-RBI double down the left field line by Wolf that scored Moore and Tomaszewski. However, Albright would score three times in the top of the third inning to take a lead, and the Lions scored twice more before the Greyhounds could push another run across the plate. Moravian's final run of the game came in the bottom of the sixth inning on an RBI ground out by White that scored freshman second baseman Brett Stout (Easton, PA/Easton HS), who had walked. Albright would score one more run in the top of the seventh inning. The Greyhounds had six hits in the game with Wolf going two-for-two. Tomaszewski suffered his first loss of the season on the mound, allowing six runs, only five earned, on 11 hits and three walks while striking out nine batters.

 

            The Lions jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the top of the first inning of the second game. Moravian would respond and take the lead in the bottom of the second inning when the Greyhounds pushed four runs across the plate. Stout scored the first run off the inning when he scored all the way from first base on a double hit by White. There was an error in the outfield that allowed Stout to score. Moore drove in the second run with an RBI double, which scored White. Cline would hit a two-RBI single to score Moore and Tomaszewski, who had been hit by a pitch. Albright tied the game at 4-4 in the top of the fourth inning with a single run. However, the Greyhounds would take the lead right back in the bottom half of the inning on an RBI single by Benigno that scored Baltz, who had reached base on a fielder's choice. Moravian finished off the scoring with a single run in the bottom of the sixth inning when Baltz hit into a double play that scored Tomaszewski, who had doubled to lead off the inning. The Greyhounds had 11 hits in the game with Moore going four-for-four. Cline also had two hits in the contest. Freshman pitcher Trevor Lawrence (Lansford, PA/Marian Catholic HS) improved to 2-1 on the season for Moravian, allowing four runs, just two of them earned, on seven hits and a walk with three strikeouts.

            Moravian opened its 2005 season with a 14-7 loss to Swarthmore College in a non-conference match on the HUB Quad. The Greyhounds jumped out to a 1-0 lead and held a 4-2 advantage 8:37 into the contest before the Garnet Tide rallied for a 6-5 halftime lead. Swarthmore took control of the match with five goals in the first 4:03 of the second half and out-scored the Greyhounds 8-2 after the intermission. Junior midfielder Jessica Cordani (Point Pleasant, NJ/Point Pleasant Boro HS) led Moravian with three goals while sophomore attack Lindsey Lustrino (Manasquan, NJ/Manasquan HS) had two goals, including the first goal of the season for Moravian. Freshman midfielder Erica Spatz (Pennsauken, NJ/Pennsauken HS) had a goal in her collegiate debut with the Greyhounds, and she led the team with eight ground balls. Swarthmore had a 34-16 advantage on shots and a 49-36 edge in ground balls during the game. Moravian sophomore goalie Jennifer Gassner (Manasquan, NJ/Manasquan HS) had 15 saves in her debut with the Greyhounds.

 

            The Greyhounds dropped their first road contest of the 2005 season, falling to rival Muhlenberg College, 17-5, in a evening match at Scotty Wood Stadium in Allentown. The Mules led 12-2 at halftime. Moravian received two goals from Cordani while Lustrino, Spatz and freshman attack Kellie Barnes (Newtown Square, PA/Marple Newtown HS) each netted goals for the Greyhounds with Spatz scoring on a free position shot. Freshman attack Robyn Klem (Allentown, PA/Allentown Central Catholic HS) led Moravian with four ground balls while Spatz and Lustrino each had three draw controls. Gassner made 14 saves in the match for Moravian.

 

            Moravian opened its 2005 Middle Atlantic Conference season with a 12-5 loss to Susquehanna University on the HUB Quad. The Crusaders jumped out to a 2-0 lead before Moravian scored. Susquehanna then scored the next five goals before the Greyhounds added a tally late in the first half for a 7-2 Susquehanna halftime lead. Moravian would pull within 10-5 midway through the second half, but Susquehanna scored two late goals to seal the victory. The Crusaders had a 29-15 advantage on shots. For the Greyhounds, freshman attack Kellie Barnes (Newtown Square, PA/Marple Newtown HS) netted three second half goals while Spatz and Lustrino each had goals for Moravian. Junior defender Lauren Johnston (Huntingdon Valley, PA/Upper Moreland HS) had a team high six ground balls for Moravian while Cordani had four ground balls. Sophomore defender Jenna Abramson (Bangor, PA/Bangor HS) won two draw controls for the Greyhounds while Gassner made 11 saves in the match.

            Moravian played its first match of the 2005 season in Bethlehem, falling to rival Muhlenberg College, 17-3, in a non-conference match played at Lehigh University's Ronald Ulrich Turf Field. Moravian will be playing all of its home games at neutral sites this season due to renovations at the Steel Field Complex and the installation of a synthetic playing surface that will be dedicated as Rocco Calvo Field in the fall when completed. Muhlenberg jumped out to a 4-0 lead after the first quarter and led 8-2 at halftime. The Mules scored all five goals in the third quarter and added four more in the fourth while the Greyhounds had one tally in the final 15 minutes. Moravian received two goals from sophomore attack Nick Cacciutti (Media, PA/The Haverford School) and a goal and an assist from sophomore attack Daniel Larson (Dover, DE/Dover HS). Sophomore midfielder Ken Blom (Rochelle Park, NJ/Bergen Catholic HS) and T.J. Hirsch (Lake Peekskill, NY/Walter Panas HS) each had four ground balls to lead the Greyhounds, and Blom won six of 15 face-offs in the match. Freshman goalie Peter Coutros (Chalfont, PA/Central Bucks West HS) had ten saves in goal for Moravian.

 

            The Greyhounds began their 2005 Middle Atlantic Conference season with an 18-4 loss at Elizabethtown College. The Blue Jays jumped out to a 9-0 lead after the first quarter, and Elizabethtown would hold a 12-0 halftime advantage. The Blue Jays would increase the lead to 14-0 after three periods, and Elizabethtown led 16-0 in the fourth quarter before Moravian got on the board. The Greyhounds would score four of eight goals in the fourth quarter. Elizabethtown had a 43-20 advantage on shots in the game. Cacciutti led Moravian with two goals while Larson and Hirsch each scored a goal. Blom, sophomore attack Clint Quedenfeld (Chalfont, PA/Central Bucks West HS) and freshman attack Scott Jackson (Greenwood, DE/Sussex Tech HS) each had assists for the Greyhounds in the match. Freshman defender David Poppe (Simsbury, CT/Simsbury HS) led Moravian with seven ground balls while Blom won six of 15 face-offs for the Greyhounds. Coutros suffered the loss in the cage for Moravian, allowing 14 goals and making eight saves in 45 minutes of action. Freshman Peter Schenenman (Carlisle, PA/Carlisle HS) allowed four goals and had one save in 15 minutes of action.
