Greyhound Weekly Update, September 7, 2004 (-2222-)

 

Women’s Volleyball – 3-2 (Commonwealth Conference 0-0, MAC 1-1)

            The Greyhounds opened the 2004 season with a 30-18, 3129, 30-25 victory at DeSales University in non-conference action.  Senior outside hitter Christina Wallace (Bethlehem, PA/Bethlehem Catholic HS) led Moravian with 22 kills and 11 digs while junior middle hitter Lindsay Siracusa (Yardley, PA/Pennsbury HS) had 13 kills and three blocks.  Freshman middle hitter Jenna Wallace (Bethlehem, PA/Bethlehem Catholic HS) added nine kills and six blocks in her first collegiate match while sophomore outside hitter Kelly Bauer (Hellertown, PA/Notre Dame HS) had had ten digs, three kills, two service aces and two blocks in her first match for the Greyhounds.  Sophomore setter/ defensive specialist Ashley Hugo (Bath, PA/Northampton HS) had 15 assists and nine digs while freshman setter/right side hitter Katherine Perkins (Lehighton, PA/Lehighton HS) added 24 assists and three blocks.

 

            Moravian opened the 2nd Annual Greyhound Premiere Invitational in Breidegam Fieldhouse with a 31-29, 30-14, 31-29 victory over Swarthmore College.  Siracusa led Moravian with 12 kills and four blocks while Jenna Wallace had ten kills and a block.  Christina Wallace contributed nine kills, three service aces and three digs while freshman outside hitter Rachel Radocha (Whitehall, PA/Whitehall HS) had six kills, six digs and four assists.  Bauer added five kills and seven digs while Perkins had 17 assists, two kills and two blocks.  Hugo had 16 assists and five digs while freshman libero Elise Martin (Emmaus, PA/Emmaus HS) had five digs.

 

            The Greyhounds won their pool on the first day of the 2nd Annual Greyhound Premiere Invitational in Breidegam Fieldhouse with a 30-20, 30-24, 30-22 victory over St. Mary's College of Maryland.  Christina Wallace and Siracusa led Moravian with 13 kills apiece.  Wallace added three service aces and three digs while Siracusa had four service aces. Bauer contributed nine kills, eight digs and two service aces while Radocha had two kills, five digs and three assists.  Perkins added 21 assists and a kill while Hugo had 11 assists and four digs.

 

            Moravian dropped its first match of the season, falling to Gallaudet University, 24-30, 22-30, 30-22, 27-30 in the first round of the championship bracket on the second day of the 2nd Annual Greyhound Premiere Invitational.  Siracusa led Moravian with 17 kills, three service aces and three blocks while Christina Wallace added eight kills and six digs.  Bauer had six kills, ten digs, three blocks and two service aces while Jenna Wallace had five kills and six blocks.  Perkins added 19 assists, three blocks and two kills while Hugo added ten assists and six digs.  Radocha had ten digs, three kills and three blocks in the match while Martin added four digs.

 

            The Greyhounds dropped their final match in the 2nd Annual Greyhound Premiere Invitational, falling to Susquehanna University, 29-31, 30-24, 30-23, 30-23, in the championship round.  Siracusa led the Greyhounds with 13 kills and three blocks while being named to the All-Tournament Team.  Bauer had a team high 14 kills with 11 digs and a block while Christina Wallace had eight kills and four service aces.  Jenna Wallace added five kills, two service aces and two blocks while Hugo had 16 assists, eight digs and five service aces.  Perkins had 12 assists while Radocha added seven digs.

            The Moravian College football team will begin its 2004 season on Saturday, September 11th at Juniata College in a Middle Atlantic Conference home game beginning at 1:30 p.m.

Women’s Soccer – 2-0 (Commonwealth Conference 0-0, MAC 1-0)

            The Moravian College women’s soccer team opened the 2004 season with a 2-1 victory over Montclair State University of New Jersey in non-conference action on the newly renovated HUB Quad.  The Greyhounds took a 1-0 lead in the 57th minute when senior defender Kelly Haymaker (Hellertown, PA/Saucon Valley HS) lofted a shot over the Red Hawk goalie from 22 yards out.  Moravian extended its lead to 2-0 in the 88th minute when freshman midfielder Kristina Larsson (Lititz, PA/Warwick HS) found the back of the net off a loose ball at the top of the 18-yard box. Montclair State pulled within a goal in the 90th minute on an unassisted goal.  Moravian senior goalie Jill Vaccaro (South Salem, NY/John Jay HS) made four saves for the victory.  Montclair state did have a 5-2 advantage in corner kicks while both teams had nine shots.

 

     The Greyhounds improved to 2-0 on the year with a 2-0 shutout victory over Drew University in non-conference action.  The match was scoreless until the 83rd minute when junior midfielder Jessica Cordani (Point Pleasant, NJ/Point Pleasant Boro HS) lifted a shot into the goal from 20 yards out off a crossing pass from senior forward Brianne DeVries (Stockton, NJ/Delaware Valley Regional HS).  DeVries would add an unassisted breakaway goal from 18 yards out with just 30 seconds remaining in the match to cap the scoring for Moravian. The Greyhounds had an 11-6 advantage in shots and a 5-3 edge in corner kicks in the match.  Vaccaro made three saves for the shutout.

 

 

 

Men’s Soccer – 1-1 (Commonwealth Conference 0-0, MAC 1-1)

This Week – Wed., Sept. 8th vs. Swarthmore College, 5:00 p.m.; Sat., Sept. 11th vs. Stevens Institute of Technology at Muhlenberg Tournament, 3:00 p.m.; Sun., Sept. 12th at Muhlenberg College in Muhlenberg Tour., 5:00 p.m.

 

            The Moravian College men’s soccer began its 2004 season with a 5-1 loss to Drew University in non-conference action on the newly renovated HUB Quad.  The Rangers, who played for the NCAA Division III National Championship a year ago, jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first half and lead 3-0 before Moravian scored its only goal of the match.  Moravian senior midfielder Nick Tarquinio (Point Pleasant, NJ/Point Pleasant Boro HS) found the back of the net with a diving header off an indirect kick by senior midfielder Jim Feimster (Stroudsburg, PA/Pocono Mountain HS).  Drew would score two more goals in the contest.  Greyhound junior goalie Ian Nuno (Middletown, DE/Caravel Academy) made five saves in 65 minutes of action while Moravian sophomore keeper Kyle Keller (Coopersburg, PA/Southern Lehigh HS) had one stop in the final 25 minutes.  The Rangers held a 16-4 advantage in shots while both teams had three corner kicks.

 

     The Greyhounds evened their record with a 3-1 victory over the University of Scranton in non-conference action.  The Royals scored the games only tally in the first half.  However, Moravian would score three unanswered goals in the second half for the victory.  Tarquinio tied the match in the 57th minutes with an unassisted goal, his second tally of the season.  Sophomore forward Neil Untenahrer (East Stroudsburg, PA/Pocono Mountain HS) broke the tie in the 81st minute when he found the back of the net off a feed from senior midfielder/forward Ryan Fick (Hamburg, PA/Fleetwood HS).  Freshman forward Chris Dello Buono (Oakland, NJ/Immaculata HS) scored his first collegiate goal for the Greyhounds in the 88th minute off a pass from Feimster.   Moravian had an 11-9 advantage in shots while the Royals had a 5-2 edge in corner kicks.  Keller) had four saves in the victory for the Greyhounds.

Women’s Tennis – 3-0 (Commonwealth Conference 1-0, MAC 1-0)

Last Week – Defeated Eastern University, 7-2; Defeated Marywood University, 9-0; Defeated *Messiah College, 6-3.  *Commonwealth Conference match.

This Week – Tues., Sept. 7th vs. #University of Scranton, 4:00 p.m.; Sat., Sept. 11th at *Juniata College, 12:00 p.m.  *Commonwealth Conference match, #MAC match

 

            The Moravian College women’s tennis team opened its 2004 season with a 7-2 victory at Eastern University in non-conference action.  Moravian won just one doubles match with a victory at third doubles by senior Julie Anderson (Bethlehem, PA/Liberty HS) and junior Katie Cooke (Milford, PA/Delaware Valley HS).  The Greyhounds then swept the singles matches with straight set victories from Anderson, Cooke, senior Marion Berry (Avon, NJ/St. Rose HS) and junior Nicole Gruber (Lebanon, PA/Lebanon HS).  Junior Sara Weller (Gladstone, NJ/Bernards HS) and senior Jillian Iacovelli (Randolph, NJ/Randolph HS) needed three sets to earn their first victories of the year.

 

            The Greyhounds improved to 2-0 on the year and won its 17-straight match overall with a 9-0 sweep of Marywood University in non-conference action.  The Greyhounds opened the match by sweeping the three doubles contests with victories by the teams of seniors Becky Deringer (Allentown, PA/Dieruff HS) and Iacovelli, Berry and Gruber and freshmen Leah Bradshaw (Perkasie, PA/Pennridge HS) and Brittany Popaca (Lavalette, NJ/Point Pleasant Beach HS).  Deringer, Berry, Gruber, Bradshaw and Popaca all had straight sets victories in singles action with Cooke (earning a three-set victory to complete the sweep.

 

            Moravian remained undefeated on the year and began the 2004 Commonwealth Conference season with a 6-3 victory over Messiah College at Hoffman Courts.  Moravian, which has won 18 straight matches, opened the match by winning two of three doubles contests with wins by the duos of Deringer and Iacovelli and Anderson and Cooke.  In singles action, Deringer, Iacovelli and Bradshaw all won in straight sets while Berry captured a three-set victory.

 

 

 

Field Hockey – 0-0 (Commonwealth Conference 0-0, MAC 0-0))

     The Moravian College field hockey team opened the 2004 season with a 4-1 victory over Haverford College in non-conference action at Betty Prince Field.  Moravian jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the seventh minute on a goal by freshman midfielder Savannah Bayer (Newton, NJ/Newton HS) off a pass from junior forward Stacee Cupples (Allentown, PA/Allentown Central Catholic HS).  The Fords tied the match in the 14th minute.  The Greyhounds took the lead for good in the 44th minute while sophomore midfielder Rachel Griffith (Easton, PA/Freedom HS) scored off a pass from Cupples.  Cupples netted her first goal of the season in the 49th minute off a pass from Bayer before sophomore forward Elyse Jurgen (York, PA/Red Lion HS) finished the scoring with a goal in the 59th minute with an assist by Cupples.  Sophomore goalie Amanda Gaun (Hatboro, PA/Hatboro-Horsham HS) made five saves for the Greyhounds.  Moravian junior defender Jill Brinckman (East Greenville, PA/Upper Perkiomen HS) also had a defensive save in the match.

 

 

 

Golf – 3-2 (MAC 2-2)

            The Moravian College golf team will open its 2004-05 season on Monday, September 13th in the Franklin & Marshall College Invitational at the Bent Creek Country Club.

            The Moravian College women's cross country team opened the 2004 season with a third place finish at the 2004 Lehigh Valley Championships run on the Murray Goodman Campus of Lehigh University.  The Greyhounds had 66 points, 20 points behind NCAA Division I schools Lafayette College and Lehigh, which tied for first.  Senior Chelsea Mullins (Jim Thorpe, PA/Jim Thorpe HS) led the Greyhounds on the 6,000-meter course with a third place finish in a time of 23:01.0.  Freshman Krystyn Fenon (Palmerton, PA/Lehighton HS) was tenth of 67 runners with a time of 23:58.0 while senior Heather McGarvie (Medford, NJ/Shawnee HS) was 14th in 24:14.00.  Rounding out the top five for the Greyhounds were freshman Christina Maiale (Emmaus, PA/Allentown Central Catholic HS) in 17th place at 24:35.0 and junior Lauren Bahnatka (West Chester, PA/Henderson HS) in 22nd place at 24:50.0.

 

            Also competing for the Greyhounds were junior Ellen Hansen (Alburtis, PA/Brandywine Heights HS) in 33rd place at 25:38.0, junior Alexis Vergalla (Glen Gardner, NJ/Voorhees HS) at 40th in 26:28.1, senior Kim Bushner (Allentown, PA/Dieruff HS) in 48th place in 27:02.0, senior Alison Stoyko (Reading, PA/Governor Mifflin HS) at 49th in 27:06.0, freshman Theresa Zataveski (Quakertown, PA/Gwynedd Mercy Academy) in 50th place in 27:11.0, senior Kellie Smith (Perkasie, PA/Pennridge HS) at 51st in 27:29.0 and freshman Nicole Sirico (Milford, PA/Delaware Valley HS) in 61st place with a time of 29:35.1.

            The Moravian men's cross country team began the 2004 season with four individuals competing in the 2004 Lehigh Valley Championships hosted by Lehigh University on the Murray Goodman Campus.  Senior Patrick Grogan (Nazareth, PA/Notre Dame HS) led the Greyhound quartet with a 26th place finish on the 8,000-meter course with a time of 27:57.0.  Junior Will Shimer (Bethlehem, PA/Liberty HS) was 36th in the 66-runner field with a time of 28:30.0 while junior Greg Rarick (Drums, PA/Hazleton HS) was 42nd in 28:57.0 and freshman Tim Pagano (Cherry Hill, NJ/Cherry Hill West HS) was 51st in 30:05.0.
