The Greyhounds began the 2006 portion of their schedule
with an 88-62 victory over Wilkes
University in a
non-conference game at Johnston Hall. The game was close early with Moravian
holding a 25-20 lead with 10:20 to play in the first half. However, Moravian
finished the first 20 minutes of the contest on a 24-12 run to take a 49-32
lead at the intermission. The Greyhounds had a hot hand in the first half,
connecting on 18 of 30 field goal attempts (60 percent) with three
three-pointers and a perfect ten-of-ten at the foul line. Moravian also made
just six turnovers in the first half. Both teams struggled shooting the ball
after halftime with Moravian making just 15 of 39 field goal attempts (38.5
percent), and Wilkes connecting on eight of 32 attempts (25 percent). Wilkes
won the battle on the boards, out-rebounding Moravian 48-38; however, the
Colonels committed 26 turnovers to the Greyhounds' 13 turnovers. Moravian had
15 of 16 players in uniform see at least three minutes of action with 14
players scoring at least one point. Junior guard Rachel Berlin (Bethlehem,
PA/Freedom HS) led four
Greyhounds in double figures with a game high 18 points. Berlin
added thee rebounds and three assists. Senior forward Stephanie Seaman (Bethlehem, PA/Bethlehem Catholic HS) and junior
forward Kelly Applegate (Easton,
PA/Wilson HS) each netted 12 points with Seaman adding three steals and two blocked shots and Applegate, who scored all 12 points in
the first half, grabbing a team high eight rebounds to go with two assists.
Junior forward Jenny Hackleman (Solvang,
CA/Rutgers Prep {NJ} HS) tossed in 11 points while adding five rebounds,
three steals and two blocked shots while senior forward Lindsay Brase (Bethlehem, PA/Notre Dame HS) had eight points, six
rebounds and three assists. Sophomore guard Sara Steinman (Springfield, NJ/Jonathan Dayton HS), senior guard Nicole Savino (Macungie,
PA/Brandywine
Heights HS), sophomore guard Megan Kocon (Bethlehem, PA/Liberty HS), junior guard Katie Rizman (Wall, NJ/St. Rose HS) and senior forward Heather MacDonald (Wayne,
NJ/Wayne
Valley HS) each
scored four points. Rizman dished
out a career high seven assists to go with four steals and three rebounds while
Steinman had two assists. Sophomore
guard LaToya Blake (Allentown, PA/Dieruff HS) netted
three points to go with a pair of steals and a pair of assists while freshman
forward Cody Fedorishen
(Nazareth, PA/Allentown Central Catholic HS) had three rebounds and one
point in her first collegiate action.
Moravian moved into the championship game of the 5th
Annual STARTERS Moravian Winter Classic with a 93-44 victory over Albany
College of Pharmacy in the first round. During the victory for the Greyhounds, Seaman became the 16th player in
Moravian history to surpass 1,000 career points on an 18-foot jumper from the
top of the key with just under five minutes left in the game. The bucket gave Seaman a game high 20 points and a
career total of 1,001. The Greyhounds jumped out to a 45-20 halftime lead and
led the entire game. Moravian shot 30 of 66 from the floor (45.5 percent) with
two three-pointers, and the Greyhounds connected on 31 of 38 free throw
attempts (81.6 percent) while committing just 11 turnovers in the game.
Moravian also had a 51-34 advantage on the boards while recording 22 assists
and 20 steals in the victory. Albany
struggled shooting the entire game, making just 15 of 54 field goal attempts
(27.8 percent) and 12 of 21 free throws (57.1 percent). The Panthers also
committed 25 turnovers in the contest. Seaman had eight rebounds, five steals
and three assists in addition to her game high 20 points. Applegate added 16 points and five rebounds while Hackleman had 15 points, two blocked
shots and a game high nine rebounds. Brase
and MacDonald each tossed in eight
points with Brase adding four
assists and three boards. Freshman forward Rachelle
Elneus (Easton,
PA/Notre Dame HS) had seven
points and two assists as the Greyhounds played all 16 players in uniform in
the win. Berlin contributed six points and five
rebounds while Kocon
tossed in five points. Steinman
dished out five assists in the victory while Savino added four points and two blocked shots.
The Greyhounds won their third game of 2006 and the
championship of the 5th Annual STARTERS Moravian Winter Classic with a 70-41
victory over Franklin & Marshall College.
The title was Moravian's third in the five years of the tournament. The game
was close for most of the first half with the Greyhounds holding just a 15-14
lead with 6:20 before the intermission. Moravian would finish the half on a
17-6 run for a 32-20 halftime lead. In the second half, Moravian would push the
lead to as many as 33 points. The Greyhounds struggled from the floor, making
just 24 of 68 field goal attempts (35.3 percent) and two of 11 three-pointers.
Moravian was hot again at the foul line for the second straight game,
connecting on 20 of 26 free throw attempts (76.9 percent). The Greyhounds did
have a 54-37 advantage on the boards while Moravian committed 22 turnovers to
the Diplomats' 30 miscues. Franklin & Marshall also struggled shooting the
ball, making just 16 of 55 field goal attempts (29.1 percent), one of ten
three-pointers and eight of 16 free throw attempts. Seaman was named the Tournament's Most Valuable Player after
scoring a game high 18 points to go with seven rebounds, five steals and two
blocked shots. Applegate and Hackleman each earned spots on the
All-Tournament Team. Applegate
scored 14 points and had a game high ten rebounds in the victory to go with
three assists while Hackleman had
six points, five rebounds, four steals and three blocked shots. Blake tied her career high with seven
points, and she had four rebounds, three assists and two steals in the win. Berlin
had six points, six rebounds and three assists while Steinman added dive points. Rizman
grabbed four rebounds for Moravian while Brase
added five rebounds, four points and three steals. MacDonald also grabbed four rebounds.

The Greyhounds began 2006 with an 85-57 victory over Dickinson College in non-conference action at
Johnston Hall. With the game tied 3-3, Moravian went on a 13-0 run to take a
16-3 lead with 10:12 remaining in the first half. The Greyhounds would lead by
double digits the rest of the way. Moravian built a 43-23 halftime lead by
shooting 13 of 27 (48.1 percent) from the floor in the first half with three
three-pointers, and the Greyhounds also made 14 of 17 (82.4 percent) free
throws before the intermission. In the second half, Moravian would make 13 of
29 field goal attempts (44.8 percent) with six three-pointers, and the team was
ten of 12 (83.3 percent) from the foul line in the second half. The Greyhounds
played all 15 players in uniform for at least five minutes with 13 players
scoring. Senior forward Zach Zsilavecz (Bethlehem, PA/Liberty HS) paced Moravian with 14 points to go with
three rebounds while sophomore guard Justin
Chestnut (Willow Grove, PA/Upper Moreland HS) tossed in ten points to go with
five assists and four boards. Sophomore forward Chris Earley (Brielle, NJ/Manasquan
HS) contributed nine points and five rebounds while sophomore forward Mark Franzyshen (Somerset, NJ/Immaculata
HS) had eight points and three boards. Sophomore forward Eric Whitman (Blairstown, NJ/Notre Dame
East Stroudsburg {PA} HS) tied his career high with seven points while
junior forward Matt Devlin
(Sadsburyville, PA/ Coatesville HS), junior guard Michael Clemente (Toms River, NJ/Central Regional HS) and senior
guard Joe Depasquale (Forked River,
NJ/Lacey HS) each tossed in six points. Devlin added a game high six rebounds while Clemente had four rebounds and three steals. The six points tied a
career high for Depasquale.
Sophomore guard Greg Jones (Bronx,
NY/Mount St. Michael Academy HS) had a career high five points to go with
three rebounds, two assists and two steals while sophomore guard Ryan Miller (Easton, PA/Easton HS),
sophomore forward Steve Buynovsky (West Lawn, PA/Wyomissing HS) and senior
forward Tyler Tripucka (Glen Ridge,
NJ/Glen Ridge HS) each scored four points.
Moravian earned its second consecutive non-conference
win with a 78-61 victory over Delaware
Valley College
in Johnston Hall. The Greyhounds took a 4-3 lead just two minutes into the game
and would hold the lead the rest of the way. Moravian had a hot hand in the
game, making 17 of 30 field goal attempts (56.7 percent) in the first half and
another 13 of 26 attempts (50 percent) in the second half. The Greyhounds also
connected on 11 of 14 free throws (78.6 percent) and added seven three-pointers
in the victory. All 15 Greyhounds in uniform played at least three minutes with
12 scoring at least one point. Zsilavecz
netted a team high 15 points for Moravian to go with two assists and two
rebounds. Miller and senior forward Ed Reid (Pen Argyl, PA/Pen
Argyl HS) each tossed in 11 points with Reid contributing three rebounds and two assists. Franzyshen had
nine points and four rebounds for the Greyhounds in the victory while Buynovsky scored
a career high seven points to go along with two rebounds and two blocked shots.
Whitman added six points while Clemente and Devlin each scored five points. Devlin grabbed a game high six rebounds while Clemente had two assists and a pair of boards. Depasquale scored four points while Chestnut tied a career high with seven assists.
The Greyhounds dropped a 76-66 decision to Hood College
in the first round of the 28th Annual Greyhound Starters Classic. The loss
snapped Moravian's two-game winning streak to begin 2006. The Greyhounds jumped
out to a 7-0 lead in the first five minutes of the game and led 22-13 with 9:44
left until the intermission. However, Hood scored 19 of the final 28 points in
the first half for a 32-31 halftime advantage. Moravian made just 11 of 29
first half field goal attempts (37.9 percent) with five three-pointers and four
of five free throws (80 percent). Moravian made just five turnovers in the
first half. When the second half started, the Greyhounds quickly built a 39-34
lead in the first two and a half minutes of the half. Hood responded with a 9-0
run to take a 43-39 lead with 15:11 to play. The Greyhounds scored the next
five points for a 44-43 edge with 12:53 left in regulation. However, the
Blazers would go on a 13-0 run to take control of the game with a 56-44 lead
with 7:08 remaining on the clock. Moravian would pull within seven points twice
in the remainder of the game but Hood iced the contest from the free throw line
in the final two minutes. The Greyhounds continued to struggle from the floor
in the second half, connecting on just 11 of 32 field goal attempts (34.4
percent) after the intermission. Moravian did make seven of 14 three-pointers
in the second half and six of eight free throws while making nine turnovers.
The Greyhounds had a balanced scoring attack in the game with 57 of 66 points
coming from the starting line-up. Miller
tied his career high with a team leading 15 points while Reid tossed in 13 points. Chestnut
and Zsilavecz each netted ten points
with Zsilavecz grabbing a team high
five rebounds. Chestnut added seven
assists and three rebounds while Devlin
had nine points and four boards in the game. Franzyshen contributed four
points and three rebounds while Clemente
scored three points.
Moravian earned a 96-62 victory over FDU-Florham in
the consolation game of the 28th Annual Greyhound Starters Classic to finish
third in the tournament. With the game tied at 4-4, the Greyhounds went on a
13-5 run to take control at 17-9 with 10:36 remaining in the first half.
Moravian had its best shooting game of the season, connecting on 15 of 30 field
goal attempts (50 percent) in the first half and 35 of 64 attempts (54.7
percent) for the game. The Greyhounds were also 15 of 26 behind the three-point
line in the contest (57.7 percent) and hit 11 of 14 free throw attempts (78.6
percent). Moravian had a balanced scoring attack with five players netting
double figures and all 16 players in uniform seeing at least three minutes of
action. Miller led all scorers with
a career high 18 points, and Miller,
who was named to the All-Tournament Team, added four assists and two rebounds. Clemente tossed in a career best 15
points with six assists, four rebounds and two steals while Reid added 13 points, five rebounds and
three steals. Depasquale scored a
career high 12 points, all coming on three-pointers, while Devlin contributed ten points and a team high six rebounds. Whitman had seven points and three
rebounds while Zsilavecz had five
points and four assists. Earley and Franzyshen each
scored four points with Earley
grabbing four rebounds and Franzyshen adding three boards.
