The Greyhounds earned their fourth straight trip to the Commonwealth Conference Championship game with a 79-73 victory over Widener University in Commonwealth Semifinal in Johnston Hall behind a double-double from junior forward Kelly Applegate (Easton, PA/Wilson HS), who had 33 points and ten rebounds. With the game tied at 4-4, Widener went on an 8-2 run to take a 12-6 lead with 15:24 remaining in the first half. The Greyhounds battled back and took a 21-19 lead with just over ten minutes remaining in the half only to see the Pioneers score eight straight points for a 27-21 lead with 7:25 before the intermission. Moravian would pull within two points, 40-38, with just 15 seconds left in the first half on a jumper by senior forward Stephanie Seaman (Bethlehem, PA/Bethlehem Catholic HS). Both teams shot well in the first half with Moravian making 15 of 29 field goal attempts (51.7 percent) and eight of nine free throws (88.9 percent) while Widener was 17 of 35 in the first half (48.6 percent), four of ten behind the three-point line and two of three at the foul line. Moravian went to the break with an 18-15 advantage in rebounds, and the Greyhounds had committed seven turnovers while Widener had six turnovers. The Greyhounds started the second half by taking a quick 41-38 lead on a three-pointer by Seaman. The game would go back and forth until it was tied at 50-50 with 13:19 to play. Widener would score four straight points to take its biggest lead of the half at 54-50 with 10:58 left. The Greyhounds would eventually push the lead to double digits, leading by as many as 12 points at 72-60 with 4:31 left. Moravian, one of the top free throw shooting teams in the nation, iced the game at the foul line, making nine of 12 free throws in the final four and a half minutes. The Greyhounds were 17 of 22 at the foul line in the second half (77.3 percent) and 11 of 25 from the floor (44 percent) with two three-pointers. Widener struggled from the floor, making just nine of 28 field goal attempts (32.1 percent); however, the Pioneers were 15 of 17 at the foul line. Messiah earns the Commonwealth Conference's automatic berth into the NCAA Division III National Championship Tournament with the victory, the Falcons' eighth trip in the last 11 years. Messiah jumped out to an earlier lead and headed into the intermission with a 32-22 lead. The Falcons were 13 of 31 from the floor (41.9 percent) with three three-pointers in the first half. Messiah was just three of seven at the foul line, but had a 26-11 advantage on the boards and committed just ten first half turnovers while Moravian made 16 turnovers in the first half. Moravian struggled from the floor in the first 20 minutes, making just nine of 28 field goal attempts (32.1 percent), three three-pointers and its only free throw attempt. Messiah would continue to build on its lead in the second half by shooting 12 of 28 (42.9 percent) with four three-pointers and 15 of 24 free throws (62.5 percent). On the other hand, Moravian's shooting woes continued in the second half with the Greyhounds making just 12 of 39 field goal attempts (30.8 percent) with one three-pointers and five of seven free throws.
