Moravian swept its ninth doubleheader of the season,
defeating Drew University, 2-1 and 9-4, in a
non-conference doubleheader. The twinbill was added to the schedule just 26 hours before the
first pitch as the Greyhounds had an open date due to another opponent needing
to make up conference games. Drew jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the
first inning of the first game when a run scored on a wild pitch by Moravian
freshman starter Katie Agnew (Doylestown, PA/Lansdale Catholic HS). The Greyhounds would tie the game in the top
of the third inning on a two-out, RBI single by junior outfielder Justina Black (Orefield, PA/Parkland HS) that
pushed sophomore second baseman Beth Paly (Whitehall, PA/Whitehall HS) across the plate. Paly had doubled
with two outs to start the rally.
Moravian would score the winning run in the top of the fourth inning
while sophomore third baseman Kelly Santry (Hatboro, PA/Upper Moreland HS)
scored on a wild pitch. Santry
had singled to lead off the inning and moved around the bases on sacrifice bunts
by junior catcher Danielle Carrione (Bloomfield, NJ/Mt. St. Dominic HS) and
sophomore outfielder Megan Ritchey
(Boyertown, PA/Boyertown HS). The Greyhounds had eight hits in the game
with two each by Black and junior
first baseman Lauren Homa
(Chalfont, PA/Central Bucks West HS).
Agnew improved to 2-0 in the
circle for the Greyhounds, allowing a run on four hits and three walks with
three strikeouts in four innings of action. Senior pitcher Meagan Hennessy (Freehold, NJ/Freehold Township HS) came into work
the final three innings for her third save of the season, allowing just a walk
and striking out three batters.
Moravian took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning
of the second game when freshman outfielder Erica Klepeisz (Nazareth,
PA/Nazareth
HS) singled to lead off the game and eventually scored on a wild pitch. The
Greyhounds would extend the lead to 2-0 in the top of the second inning when
freshman outfielder Deanna Mangieri (Pleasantville,
NY/Byram
Hills HS) scored on a Ranger error after reaching base on an infield
single. Drew would tie the game in the bottom of the second inning on a
sacrifice fly and a Moravian error. The Greyhounds would take the lead right
back in the top of the third inning on a two-run home run by senior designated
player Richelle McWilliams (Riegelsville, PA/Easton HS).
The homer was McWilliams' fifth of
the season and the 20th of her career, making McWilliams the second player in school history to hit at least 20
career homers. Paly
also scored on the home run after drawing a walk to lead off the inning. The
Greyhounds scored three times in the top of the fourth inning o extend their
lead to 7-2. Black drove in Klepeisz and freshman shortstop with a two-RBI triple. McWilliams followed with an RBI single
to score Black. The Rangers got two
runs back in the bottom of the fifth inning before Moravian added two insurance
runs in the top of the seventh inning. McWilliams
led off the inning with a single and scored on a wild pitch. Klepeisz would
add an RBI single to score Homa. The Greyhounds finished the game with 13 hits
including a four-for-four performance by McWilliams.
Klepeisz, Black and Mangieri each had two hits as
well while Drew pounded out nine hits. Moravian freshman pitcher Kristie Pellicani
(Sparta, NJ/Sparta HS) improved
to 8-1 in the circle with the win. She allowed four runs, only three earned, on
six hits and a walk in four-plus innings of action. Pellicani also struck out four
batters. Hennessy came in for her
second save of the doubleheader and the tenth of her career, allowing three
hits and striking out five batters in three innings.
Moravian's Commonwealth Conference doubleheader at Albright College for Friday, April 14th has been
postponed due to weather and field conditions. It has been rescheduled for
Thursday, April 27th at 3:00 p.m. in Reading.

Moravian closed out the 2006 Commonwealth Conference
season with a 6-1 loss to Lebanon
Valley College
in a match that decided the final team for the four-team Commonwealth
Conference Tournament that begins next week. The Greyhounds lone point came
from a straight sets singles win by freshman Keith Feinman (Haddonfield, NJ/Haddonfield
HS) at fourth singles. Junior Scott Shelbo (Bethlehem, PA/Freedom HS) and senior Sean Lynch (West Chester, PA/Henderson HS)
each won a set in their singles match for Moravian but we unable to win, both
falling in three sets.

Moravian won its second straight Middle Atlantic
Conference match, defeating DeSales
University, 11-4, on the
HUB Quad. Moravian jumped out to a quick 2-0 lead and led 2-1 at the end of the
first quarter. The Greyhounds would score the only goals of the second quarter
to head into the intermission with a 4-1 lead. Moravian added two more goals in
the third quarter and led 6-2 after 45 minutes. The Greyhounds had a 39-23
advantage in shots, a 36-29 edge in ground balls and won 16 of 18 face-offs in
the match. Freshman attack Christopher
Danni (Macungie, PA/Emmaus HS) scored a career high five
goals Moravian and he had one assist and three ground balls. Junior midfielder Ken Blom (Rochelle Park, NJ/Bergen Catholic
HS) added three goals, two assists and four ground balls while freshman
attack Jason Tosches
(West Windsor, NJ/West Windsor-South Plainsboro HS) had two goals and an
assist. Junior midfielder T.J. Hirsch (Putnum Valley,
NY/Walter Panas HS) scored
the Greyhounds' other goal and led the team with six ground balls and a
nine-for-12 performance on face-offs. Senior defender Rocco DiPoalo (Keyport, NJ/Academy of Marine Science HS), sophomore
midfielder Aaron Satterfield (Mt.
Arlington, NJ/Pope John XXIII HS) and freshmen midfielders Keith Danner (Laurys
Station, PA/Parkland HS) and James Messler (Allentown, PA/Emmaus HS) each had assists for
the Greyhounds while sophomore defender
David Poppe (Simsbury, CT/Simsbury HS) and
freshman midfielder Brian Cleaver
(Allentown, PA/Parkland HS) each added four ground balls. Sophomore goalie Benjamin Larson (Dover,
DE/Dover
HS) had 12 saves in goal for Moravian.
Moravian earned its third straight victory with a 12-2
win over Alvernia College in non-conference action at Lehigh University's
Robert Ulrich Turf Field. The Greyhounds jumped out to a 4-0 first quarter
lead, and Moravian was up 6-0 at halftime. The Greyhounds would extend their
lead to 8-0 before the Crusaders scored, and Moravian led 10-1 after three
quarters. The Greyhounds had a 44-24 advantage in shots and a 42-26 edge in
ground balls while both teams won nine face-offs and had a man-up goal. Danner led the Greyhounds with three
goals while Dannie netted a pair of
goals. Hirsch scored two goals and
added two assists, and he also won seven of eight face-offs and had four ground
balls. Junior midfielder Tristan Flis (Harleysville, PA/North
Penn HS) netted his first two goals of the season for the Greyhounds while Satterfield had his first goal of the
year. Blom had a goal and two
assists for Moravian while Cleaver
added a goal and Tosches
had two assists. Sophomore defender Adam
Melroy (Newton,
NJ/Pope John XXIII HS) led
the Greyhounds with seven ground balls in the victory. Larson played 30 shutout minutes in the cage with three saves and
three ground balls while sophomore keeper Peter
Coutros (Chalfont, PA/Central Bucks West HS) had
five saves in the other 30 minutes, and Coutros also registered a shot in goal in the match.

The Greyhounds dropped a 19-7 non-conference match at Neumann College. The Knights led 9-5 at halftime
before out-scoring Moravian, 10-2, in the second half. Neumann had a 29-16
advantage in shots and a 42-26 edge in ground balls. Junior midfielder Lindsey Lustrino (Spring Lake, NJ/Manasquan
HS) led Moravian with five goals, eight caused turnovers and five ground
balls. Senior midfielder Jessica Cordani
(Point Pleasant, NJ/Point Pleasant Boro HS) contributed a goal and an
assist while sophomore midfielder Robyn Klem (Allentown, PA/Allentown Central Catholic HS) had
a goal, five caused turnovers and three ground balls. Sophomore goalie Laura Schantz (Bethlehem, PA/Liberty HS) had seven
saves, four ground balls and four caused turnovers.
Moravian dropped an 18-7 match to Widener University
in Middle Atlantic Conference action on the HUB Quad. The Pioneers lead 11-2 at
halftime but Moravian would cut the lead to 12-7. With 12:27 remaining on the
clock and Widener leading 13-7, the match was delayed 30 minutes by lightening.
The Pioneers finished the match with a 28-24 edge in ground balls while
Moravian held a 32-27 advantage in shots and a 15-13 edge in draw controls. For
Moravian, Lustrino had five goals
while Cordani contributed a goal and
three assists. Sophomore attack Casey
Simpson (Laporte, PA/Sullivan
County HS)
netted a goal for Moravian while Lustrino
led the team with ten ground balls, four draw controls and four caused
turnovers. Senior midfielder Kindal
Estes (New Providence, NJ/New Providence HS) scooped up five ground balls for
the Greyhounds while Schantz
had three saves.

The Greyhounds dropped an 8-2 decision to Albright College in a Commonwealth Conference
game at Gillespie Field. The Lions jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the top of the
second inning. Albright would extend the lead to 3-0 with a run in the top of
the fourth inning. Moravian would score a run in the bottom of the fourth
inning to cut the lead back to 3-1. Junior shortstop Pete Moore (Bogota, NJ/Bogota HS) singled to lead off the inning and would
score on an RBI sacrifice fly by senior designated hitter/pitcher John Howarth (Livingston, NJ/Livingston
HS). The Greyhounds would pull within a run in the bottom of the fifth
inning on an RBI single by senior first baseman Richie Cline (Union Beach, NJ/Keyport HS) that scored sophomore
outfielder Josh Baltz (Easton, PA/Easton
HS), who had reached on an error to lead off the inning. Albright would
score twice in the top of the sixth inning, and the Lions added two more runs
in the top of the seventh inning. Albright finished off the scoring with a run
in the top of the ninth inning. The Lions had ten hits in the game while
Moravian finished with eight hits including two each from Baltz and Moore.
Sophomore Brett Stout (Easton, PA/Easton
HS) started on the mound for the Greyhounds and suffered his second loss of
the season, allowing five runs, just two of them earned, on eight hits and a
walk with three strikeouts in six innings of action. Sophomore Brandon Cohn (Newtown
Spare, PA/The Shipley School)
tossed one-plus innings for Moravian, giving up two runs on two hits and two
walks with one strikeout. Howarth pitched the final two innings for the Greyhounds,
allowing an unearned run on a walk with two strikeouts.
Moravian suffered a 5-2 loss to Lebanon Valley
College in the first game
of a three-game Commonwealth Conference series. The Greyhounds jumped out to a
2-0 lead in the top of the first inning. With two outs, Moore
singles, stole second base and scored on an RBI double by Cline. Freshman outfielder Joseph
Durso (Middletown,
NJ/Christian Brother Academy HS)
then hit an RBI single to score Cline.
Lebanon Valley would cut the lead in half in the
bottom of the first inning. The Flying Dutchmen took the lead for good in the
bottom of the second inning with a pair of runs. Lebanon Valley
added two more runs in the bottom of the seventh inning. The Flying Dutchmen
had 13 hits in the game while Moravian finished with seven hits including two
off of Moore's
bat. Sophomore John Bisco
(Easton, PA/Notre
Dame HS) took the loss for the Greyhounds on the mound, allowing five runs,
just three of them earned, on ten hits and four walks with three strikeouts in
6 1/3 innings. Howarth
tossed the final 1 2/3 innings for Moravian, allowing just a hit.
The Greyhounds dropped the first game of a Commonwealth
Conference doubleheader versus Lebanon
Valley College,
12-6, at Gillespie Field. Moravian took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first
inning on an RBI single by freshman third baseman Matthew McCarthy (Allentown, PA/Allentown
Central Catholic HS) that scored Baltz,
who had walked to lead off the inning. The Flying Dutchmen would score eight
runs in the top of the second inning to take the lead, and Lebanon Valley
added a run in the top of the third inning for a 9-1 lead. The Greyhounds
responded with five runs in the bottom of the third inning. McCarthy would drive in Baltz and Howarth with a two-RBI
ground-rule double. Freshman catcher Thomas
Czarnecki (Columbia, NJ/North Warren HS) followed
with a two-RBI single to score Cline
and McCarthy. Freshman shortstop Kevin Gambrino
(Brick, NJ/Monsignor Donovan HS) finished off the scoring with an RBI

runs in the fourth, fifth and sixth innings to finish off the scoring. Moravian
had seven hits in the game with two each by McCarthy, Czarnecki

while the Flying Dutchmen had 11 hits with. Sophomore Matthew Swartz (Dunmore, PA/Dunmore HS) suffered the loss on the
mound for the Greyhounds, allowing eight runs, six of them earned, on four hits
and two walks in 1 1/3 innings. Junior Josh
Hunter (Palmerton, PA/Palmerton HS) tossed 4 2/3 innings for the
Greyhounds, giving up four runs, two of them earned, on seven hits and two
walks while striking out three batters. Freshman Brian Davis (Hellertown, PA/Saucon

off the game on the mound for Moravian, pitching the seventh inning.

Lebanon Valley retook the lead in the top of the
third inning with six runs, and the Flying Dutchmen added four runs in the
fifth inning and three more in the sixth inning. Lebanon Valley
had 15 hits in the game while Moravian had just five hits in the game.
Sophomore Trevor Lawrence (Lansford,
PA/Marian Catholic HS) suffered the loss on the mound for the Greyhounds,
allowing 12 runs, just four of them earned, on 11 hits and two walks with one
strikeout in five innings of action. Freshman Matt Kosensky (Flemington, NJ/Hunterdon
Central HS) made his collegiate debut on the mound for Moravian in relief,
allowing three runs on four hits and a walk in two innings of action.

The Greyhounds placed fourth of 13 schools at the Grizzly
Invitational hosted by Ursinus
College. Moravian had a
team score of 67 points while NCAA Division I Coppin
State College won the meet with 126 points, just three points ahead of NCAA
Division II West Chester University of Pennsylvania. The Greyhounds had one
individual champion with Junior Erin
Recker (Catasauqua, PA/Catasauqua HS) capturing first in the
100-meter dash in 12.53 seconds, and Recker
was second in the 200-meter dash in 25.57 seconds. Moravian's 4x100-meter relay
squad also won first place in a time of 48.95 seconds.
Junior Amy Reehil (Roselle, NJ/Roselle Catholic HS)
was fifth in the 100-meter dash in 13.23 seconds while senior Rebecca Moore (Easton,
PA/Easton
HS) placed sixth in 13.36 seconds. Junior Kathleen McCarron (Nazareth,
PA/Nazareth HS)
took seventh in the event in 13.41 seconds while freshman Katarina Birle (Westwood,
MA/Westwood HS) was 15th in a
time of 14.24 seconds. In the 200-meter dash, junior Suzanne Tamlyn (Wappingers
Falls, NY/Wallkill HS) placed third in 26.71 seconds while Reehil was fifth
at 27.05 seconds and Birle
was 20th in 29.53 seconds. Moore also
placed fourth in the 400-meter hurdles in 1:10.75.
Senior Lauren Bahnatka
(West Chester, PA/Henderson HS) paced
the Greyhounds in the distance races, placing sixth in the 5,000-meter run in
20:19.84. Freshman Kelly Williams (Tafton, PA/Wallenpaupack HS) was eighth in the event in 20:20.43
while sophomore Katie Pulizzano (Allentown,
PA/William Allen HS) took
tenth in 20:45.64. Senior Alexis
Vergalla (Glen Gardner, NJ/Voorhees HS) was ninth in the 1,500 meters in a
time of 5:20.54 while freshman Naomie Kachel (Shillington, PA/Governor Mifflin HS) placed
tenth in 5:22.54. Sophomore Theresa Zataveski (Quakertown, PA/Gwynedd
Mercy Academy
HS) finished 16th in the 800-meter run in a time of 2:49.65.
Zataveski also
took seventh in the long jump with a leap of 4.65 meters (15 feet, 3 1/4
inches), and she was ninth in the javelin with a toss of 16.77 meters (55 feet,
1/2 inch). McCarron
was second in the triple jump with a distance of 9.97 meters (32 feet, 8 1/2
inches) while junior Tammy Balliet (Whitehall, PA/Whitehall HS) took eighth in the
shot put with a toss of 10.31 meters (33 feet, ten inches).

Moravian finished ninth of 15 schools
at the two-day Mid-Atlantic Region Invitational hosted by the University of Rochester
at the Hershey Country Club. The Greyhounds finished the 36-hole
tournament with a team score of 652 while Allegheny College
finished first at 619. Sophomore Bryan
Ott (Whitehall, PA/Whitehall HS) tied for seventh of the 75 golfers with a
two-day total of 155, including a first round score of 75 on the par 71 course.
Junior Brian Bergstol (Mt.
Bethel, PA/Bangor
HS) tied for tenth at 158 with a pair of 79s while senior Dustin McCormick (East Stroudsburg,
PA/East Stroudsburg
HS) was tied for 27th with a 162 including a round of 75 on the second day.
Junior John Gilbert (Allentown,
PA/Freedom HS) was 72nd with a two-day
total of 179 while sophomore Eric
Whitman (Blairstown, NJ/Notre Dame East Stroudsburg {PA} HS)
did not finish the tournament after a first round score of 88.
The Greyhounds won their only tri-match of the season,
defeating host DeSales University, 321-339, and Ursinus College,
321-343, at the Brookside Country Club. Bergstol
led Moravian with a low round of 77 while sophomore Matt Hegarty (Moorestown, NJ/Moorestown HS) had
a round of 80. Ott carded an 81
while McCormick had an 83 and
sophomore Brian Scofield (Washington, NJ/Warren Hills
Regional HS) had an 18-hole total of 92.

The Greyhounds won the Grizzly Invitational hosted by Ursinus College with a score of 161 to place
first of the 13 schools at the meet. The host Bears were second with 118
points. Moravian also had six individual champions and two relay teams capture
first place finishes. Sophomore Nathaniel
Dutile (Plymouth, ME/Nokomis HS) was a two-time
winner for the Greyhounds, capturing the shot put with a toss of 14.32 meters
(46 feet, 11 3/4 inches) and the discus throw with a distance of 43.72 meters
(143 feet, 5 1/2 inches). Junior Josh
Kline (Reading, PA/Exeter HS) won the 400-meter dash in a time of 50.42
seconds while sophomore Nathaniel Tussey (Perkiomenville,
PA/Boyertown HS) won the
110-meter high hurdles in an NCAA Division III provisional qualifying time of
14.67 seconds. Sophomore Ozzie Brown
(Plymouth Meeting, PA/Plymouth-Whitemarsh HS)
captured the 400-meter hurdles in 55.54 seconds, and Brown was second in the 110-meter high hurdles at 14.76 seconds,
which is an NCAA Division III provisional qualifying time. Senior Michael El Kazzaz
(Easton, PA/Easton HS) won the
pole vault, clearing a height of 4.25 meters (13 feet, 11 1/4 inches). The
Greyhounds 4x100-meter relay squad was first in a time of 42.48 seconds while
the 4x400-meter relay team won its race with a time of 3:27.47.
Tussey
placed second in the 200-meter dash in 22.54 seconds while freshman Robert Shaffer (Pottsville,
PA/Pottsville
HS) placed fifth in 22.69 seconds. Sophomore James Bell (Mohnton,
PA/Governor Mifflin HS) was
tenth in the race in 22.94 seconds while freshman Jeff Berland (Glen Rock, NJ/Glen Rock HS)
took 23rd in 24.55 seconds. Shaffer
paced the Greyhounds in the 100-meter dash in 11.26 seconds, which placed him
fourth, while Bell was eighth at 11.44 seconds and El Kazzaz was
17th in 12.13 seconds. Berland
also ran in the 110-meter high hurdles, placing fifth in 16.02 seconds while
freshman Stephen Mulchay
(Whitehall, PA/Whitehall HS) was
ninth in the 400-meter hurdles in 1:04.17.
In the distance races, senior Greg Rarick (Drums, PA/Hazleton HS) placed fifth in the 1,500-meter
run in a time of 4:11.74 while freshman Timothy
Murphy (Bethlehem, PA/Bethlehem Catholic HS) was fifth in the 800-meter run
in 2:00.32. Freshman John McCullough (Levittown, PA/Conwell
Egan HS) also ran in the 800 meters and placed 29th in 2:15.13. Sophomore Timothy Pagano (Cherry
Hill, NJ/Cherry Hill West HS)
placed fifth in the 5,000-meter run in a time of 16:09.81 while senior William Shimer (Bethlehem,
PA/Liberty
HS) took seventh in 16:37.28.
In other field events, Brown placed second in the long jump with a leap of 6.89 meters (22
feet, 7 1/4 inches). Freshman Alan Woods
(Mechanicsburg, PA/Cedar Cliff HS) placed third in the pole vault, clearing
a height of 4.10 meters (13 feet, 5 1/4 inches) while sophomore Allan Fatzinger
(Catasauqua, PA/Catasauqua HS) took fifth at 3.80 meters (12 feet, 5 1/2
inches). Freshman Blair Maginnis (Asbury, NJ/Warren Hills Regional HS) took
fourth in the shot put with a toss of 13.12 meters (43 feet, 1/2 inch) while
senior Robert Kilmurray
(Wall, NJ/Wall HS) was fourth in the discus with a distance of 38.53 meters
(126 feet, 5 1/4 inches). Berland was 17th in the discus with a toss of 25.42 meters
(83 feet, five inches). In the javelin throw, junior Michael Ossont (Archbald,
PA/Valley View HS) placed third at 51.21 meters (168 feet, 1/2 inch) while Berland was
seventh with a toss of 46.58 meters (152 feet, 10 1/4 inches). Freshman Justin Starcher (Greentown, PA/Wallenpaupack HS) placed eighth in the event with a
throw of 45.54 meters (149 feet, 5 1/4 inches) while freshman John Muhlen (Attleboro, MA/Attleboro HS) was
ninth at 44.22 meters (145 feet, 1 1/4 inches). Woods was tenth in the javelin with a toss of 43.50 meters (142
feet, 8 3/4 inches).
