This Week – Fri. & Sat., May 5th-6th at 2006 Commonwealth Conference Tournament at Susquehanna University, Selinsgrove, PA – Fri., May 5th vs. #4 Susquehanna University, 11:00 a.m.

Moravian swept its tenth doubleheader of the season, defeating Elizabethtown College, 9-0 in five innings and 2-0, in Commonwealth Conference action Tuesday afternoon to clinch its 12th straight postseason appearance.  In the first game, Greyhound senior pitcher Meagan Hennessy (Freehold, NJ/Freehold Township HS) tossed her second no-hitter of the season and sixth of her career. Hennessy did allow three walks while striking out five batters for her 15th victory of the season. Hennessy moved into third all-time in NCAA Division III history with her 46th career shutout. The Greyhounds would give Hennessy all the offense she needed in the top of the second inning with five runs. Senior designated player Richelle McWilliams (Riegelsville, PA/Easton HS) led off with a single and Hennessy pinch ran for her. Sophomore second baseman Beth Paly (Whitehall, PA/Whitehall HS) singled, and freshman first baseman Sheri Bienick (Lumberton, NJ/Rancocas Valley HS) reached on an infield bunt single to load the bases. Sophomore third baseman Kelly Santry (Hatboro, PA/Upper Moreland HS) was hit by a pitch to score Hennessy, and junior catcher Danielle Carrione (Bloomfield, NJ/Mt. St. Dominic HS) followed with a two-RBI single to score Paly and Bienick. Freshman outfielder Erica Klepeisz (Nazareth, PA/Nazareth HS) hit an RBI single to score Santry, and Carrione would score the final run of the inning while Klepeisz stole second base.  Moravian extended its lead to 6-0 in the top of the third inning on a solo home run by Paly, the first of her collegiate career. The homer was also Moravian's 19th of the season, tying the single season school record for the team.  The Greyhounds scored three more times in the top of the fifth inning to institute the NCAA's eight-run rule. McWilliams hit a one-out double to get this started, and Hennessy would run for her again. After a single by Paly, Bienick hit an RBI single to score Hennessy. Santry finished off the scoring when she pushed Paly and sophomore pinch runner Megan Ritchey (Boyertown, PA/Boyertown HS) across the plate with a two-RBI double. Moravian had 12 hits in the game with Paly going 3-for-3 and two hits each from McWilliams, Bienick and Santry.  In the second game, freshman pitcher Kristie Pellicani (Sparta, NJ/Sparta HS) improved to 9-2 in the circle, allowing just one hit and a walk in five innings, and she struck out four batters. Hennessy earned her fifth save of the season, allowing a hit and two walks in two innings of action, and Hennessy also stuck out three batters.  Moravian scored the only run the duo would need in the top of the fifth inning when Santry singled with two outs and scored on an RBI single by Klepeisz after an Elizabethtown error.  The Greyhounds added another run in the top of the sixth inning. Junior outfielder Justina Black (Orefield, PA/Parkland HS) doubled with one out and sophomore Keri Traficante (Chalfont, PA/Central Bucks West HS) came in to pinch run for her. Traficante would eventually score on another Blue Jay error. Moravian was limited to just five hits in the game with two by Klepeisz.

The Greyhounds swept their 11th doubleheader of the season, defeating Albright College, 2-0 and 7-1, in a Commonwealth Conference doubleheader to clinch the top spot in the Commonwealth Conference Tournament for the fifth straight season.  Hennessy tossed a one-hit shutout in the first game, her 11th shutout of the season, allowing a walk and striking out six batters in the complete game.  Hennessy would get all of the offense she would need in the top of the third inning. Klepeisz doubled to lead off the inning and moved to third on a sacrifice bunt by freshman shortstop Jordan Oplinger (Allentown, PA/Parkland HS). Paly followed with an RBI sacrifice fly to score Klepeisz.  Moravian's other run came in the top of the sixth inning when McWilliams connected on her sixth homer of the season and the 21st home run of her career to lead off the inning. The Greyhounds had just six hits in the game with Klepeisz collecting two of them.  Hennessy earned her second win of the day in the circle, allowing a run on five hits and two walks while striking out nine batters. The victory was also Hennessy's 17th of the season.  Hennessy's first strikeout in the bottom of the seventh inning was the 800th of her career, just the seventh pitcher in NCAA Division III history to reach that plateau, and she moved into tenth all-time with 741.0 career innings pitched.  The Greyhounds would give Hennessy all the offense she would need in the top of the first inning with a pair of runs. Klepeisz led off the game with a single and would score on an RBI double by Oplinger. The throw home to try and get Klepeisz out at the plate allowed Oplinger to move to third base. Paly followed with an RBI sacrifice fly to score Oplinger.  The Lions would cut the lead in half in the bottom of the second inning on a bases loaded walk.  In the top of the third inning, Paly would draw a two-out walk for Moravian. Bienick followed with her fourth home run of the season to give the Greyhounds a 4-1 lead.  Moravian would score three times in the top of the fourth inning to take control of the game. Junior outfielder Lauren Homa (Chalfont, PA/Central Bucks West HS) reached on an error to lead off the inning and another error would allow Homa to score on a ball hit by Ritchey. Carrione followed with an RBI double to score Ritchey and Carrione would cross the plate on an RBI single by Klepeisz. The Greyhounds had eight hits in the game including two each by Klepeisz and Oplinger.  During the bottom of the seventh inning, on the same strikeout that was Hennessy's 800th career strikeout, Carrione became Moravian's all-time leader in putouts with 723. Carrione would pick up one more putout in the game when Hennessy struck out the next batter.

Moravian swept its 12th doubleheader of the year in its regular season finale, defeating Messiah College, 2-0 & 2-0, in a Commonwealth Conference doubleheader at Blue & Grey Field.  The second victory of the day was the 400th in the career of head coach John Byrne, who now has a 400-131 mark in 13 seasons at Moravian.  Byrne is Moravian’s first head coach to win 400 contests in a single sport.  The victory was also the Greyhounds’ 30th of the 2006 season, the fifth straight year Moravian has won at least 30 games.  Hennessy tossed a two-hit shutout for the Greyhounds, her 12th of the season. She did not allow any walks.  Hennessy would get all of the offense she would need in the bottom of the first inning when Oplinger reached on an error and scored on an RBI single by Paly.  Moravian added its other run in the bottom of the fourth inning. McWilliams led off with a single and Hennessy came on to run for McWilliams. After a sacrifice bunt by Homa and a single by Bienick, Hennessy would score on an RBI sacrifice fly by Santry. The Greyhounds were limited to six hits in the game with two by Bienick.  Hennessy tossed her second two-hit shutout of the day in the second game, allowing two walks and striking out eight batters in her 12th shutout and 19th victory of the season. Hennessy is now tied for second in NCAA Division III history with Lacey Lister of Salisbury (MD) University with 50 career shutouts. Hennessy has also moved into a tie for eighth in career victories with 86, and she is seventh in career strikeouts 818, tied for ninth in career ERA at 0.86, ninth in innings pitched with 755 and tied for 11th in complete games with 96.  Hennessy would get all the offense she would need when she scored a run in the bottom of the second inning. McWilliams led off the inning with a double and Hennessy came into pinch run as the flex player. After a pair of outs, Ritchey singled to move Hennessy to third. Hennessy then crossed the plate on an RBI single by Carrione.  The Greyhounds scored their other run in the bottom of the fourth inning when McWilliams connected on a one-out, solo home run to dead centerfield. The homer was McWilliams’ team-leading seventh of the season. McWilliams is second in school history with 22 career homers, and Moravian has hit a school record 22 home runs this spring as a team. The Greyhounds finished the game with eight hits including two each by McWilliams, Homa and Oplinger, who hit a pair of doubles.
