Softball – 33-7 (Commonwealth Conference 13-1, MASCAC 22-2) – Commonwealth Conference Champions

Last Week – Defeated *Susquehanna University, 2-1; Defeated *Lebanon Valley College, 1-0 (10 innings); Lost to *Lebanon Valley College, 3-1; Defeated *Lebanon Valley College, 3-1.  *Commonwealth Conference Tournament

This Week – Thurs.-Sun., May 11th-14th at 2006 NCAA Division III Regional at Salisbury University, Salisbury, MD – Thurs., May 11th vs. #5 King’s College, 10:00 a.m.

Top seeded Moravian defeated fourth seeded and host Susquehanna University, 2-1, in the first game of the 2006 Commonwealth Conference Tournament to advance in the winners bracket. The Greyhounds broke a scoreless tie in the bottom of the fifth inning with a pair of runs. Junior catcher Danielle Carrione (Bloomfield, NJ/Mt. St. Dominic HS) led off the inning with a single to left field. After a wild pitch moved Carrione to second, freshman outfielder Erica Klepeisz (Nazareth, PA/Nazareth HS) laid down a bunt single down the first base line to put runners on the corners. Junior outfielder Lauren Homa (Chalfont, PA/Central Bucks West HS) grounded out to put runners at second and third before freshman shortstop Jordan Oplinger (Allentown, PA/Parkland HS) hit an RBI ground out to score Carrione. Freshman first baseman Sheri Bienick (Lumberton, NJ/Rancocas Valley HS) hit an infield RBI single that scored Klepeisz with what was the winning run. Susquehanna would break up a perfect game by Moravian senior pitcher Meagan Hennessy (Freehold, NJ/Freehold Township HS) in the top of the sixth inning when the Crusaders scored on the second Greyhound error of the inning. Moravian finished the game with seven hits with two Homa and a double by sophomore third baseman Kelly Santry (Hatboro, PA/Upper Moreland HS). Hennessy tossed a two-hitter with no walks and seven strikeouts. Hennessy, who won her 20th game of the year, moved into 6th in NCAA Division III history with 825 strikeouts.

The top seeded Greyhounds advanced to the championship game of the Commonwealth Conference Tournament for the sixth straight season with a 1-0, ten-inning win over third seeded Lebanon Valley College in a winner's bracket game on the first day of the 2006 tournament at Susquehanna University. This is the third time in the six year history of the tournament that Moravian has needed extra innings to advance to the championship game. The contest turned out to be a pitchers duel, first between Hennessy and Lebanon Valley senior Alisa Albers, and then between Hennessy and Flying Dutchmen junior Jenn Roberts. Hennessy would allow just four hits and a walk while striking out nine batters for her 21st win of the season and her 14th shutout of the year. Albers tossed seven scoreless innings for Lebanon Valley, allowing six hits while striking out three batters. Roberts came in and tossed 2 2/3 innings with a hit and a strikeout. Moravian's run in the tenth inning was charged to the Lebanon Valley team as it scored due to the international tiebreaker. Santry started the bottom of the tenth at second base and moved to third base on a sacrifice bunt by Carrione. After an out, Homa hit a line drive off the first baseman's glove for an RBI single to push Santry across the plate. Homa had three of Moravian's seven hits to move within two of 100 for her career at Moravian. The Greyhounds did leave nine runners on base in the win and had the bases loaded with one out in the second inning but stranded them all on base. Moravian also had runners in scoring position in the first, third and seventh innings.

Top seeded Moravian suffered its first loss of the double-elimination 2006 Commonwealth Conference Tournament hosted by Susquehanna University to third seeded Lebanon Valley College, 3-1, in the first championship game. Since it was the Greyhounds' first loss, the teams will meet for a second championship game. The Flying Dutchmen jumped out to a 3-0. Moravian would load the bases in the bottom of the first inning but failed to score. The Greyhounds would also leave two runners on in the second inning before finally breaking through in the bottom of the third inning for a run. Bienick hit a one-out single and moved to second base on a two-out single by sophomore second baseman Beth Paly (Whitehall, PA/Whitehall HS). Junior outfielder Justina Black (Orefield, PA/Parkland HS) followed with an RBI single to score Bienick. The Greyhounds would also get two runners on in the bottom of the seventh inning but stranded them on base for a total of ten runners left on in the game. Moravian did have nine hits with three by Klepeisz and two off of Bienick's bat. Hennessy suffered the loss in the circle for the Greyhounds, allowing three runs on nine hits with one walk and eight strikeouts.

The Greyhounds won their sixth straight Commonwealth Conference Tournament Championship and earned the program's ninth consecutive trip to the NCAA Division III National Championship Tournament with a 3-1 victory over third seeded Lebanon Valley College in the if necessary championship game of the 2006 Commonwealth Tournament. Moravian has won all six titles in the history of the Commonwealth Conference Tournament, and this was just the second time the seventh and deciding game was needed. The Greyhounds took a 1-0 lead in the top of the second inning. Black led off with a double and sophomore Megan Ritchey (Boyertown, PA/Boyertown HS) came on to pinch run. Paly attempted to lay down a sacrifice bunt but the ball rolled cleanly through the infield for a hit. Senior designated hitter Richelle McWilliams (Riegelsville, PA/Easton HS) followed with a sacrifice fly to score Ritchey. Paly was thrown out at the plate to end the inning on a single to center field by Carrione. Moravian extended its lead to 2-0 in the top of the third inning. Klepeisz led off the inning with a single and moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by Homa. Bienick would connect on a two-out RBI double to score Klepeisz. The Greyhounds made the lead 3-0 in the top of the fifth inning. Klepeisz led off the inning again with a single and another Homa sacrifice bunt moved her to second base. A walk by Oplinger and a single by Bienick loaded the bases. Ritchey followed with a sacrifice fly to score Klepeisz. Moravian finished with ten hits in the game including three by Bienick and two from Klepeisz. Homa had a double in the first inning that was the 100th hit of her career, the 22nd player in school history to get to 100 career hits. The Flying Dutchmen would get their only run of the game in the bottom of the seventh inning. Lebanon Valley had just three hits in the contest with two coming in the seventh inning. Hennessy was named the tournament's Most Valuable Player for the second straight year. She allowed just a run on three hits and one walk while striking out four batters in the championship clinching victory. Hennessy is second in the NCAA record books in shutouts with 51, seventh in victories with 89, eighth in innings pitched with 785 2/3, ninth in career ERA at 0.86 and tied for sixth in complete games with 100.
