Moravian won its second straight game and improved to 2-1
in Commonwealth Conference action with a 77-59 victory over Lebanon Valley
College in Johnston Hall.
The Greyhounds jumped out to a 6-0 lead and would hold a lead the entire game.
Moravian led by as many as 12 points in the first half, 22-10 at the 12:32 mark
before the Flying Dutchmen started to chip away at the lead. Lebanon Valley
pulled within two points at 32-30 with 3:57 until the intermission. Moravian
responded with a 10-2 run to head to the locker room with a 42-32 lead. Both
teams shot extremely well in the first half. The Greyhounds were 15 of 30 from
the floor, three of five behind the three-point line and nine of ten at the
foul line. The difference came in turnovers where Lebanon Valley
committed 19 turnovers in the first 20 minutes while Moravian had just eight
turnovers. The Greyhounds would keep their lead in double figures for the
entire second half, pushing it to 25 points twice, the final time at 74-49 with
4:52 to play in the game. Moravian scored its final points of the game on a
jumper by sophomore forward Rachelle Elneus (Easton,
PA/Notre Dame HS) with 2:10
remaining on the clock. The Greyhounds made just 12 of 32 field goal attempts
(37.5 percent) in the second half, one of seven three-pointers and ten of 13
free throws. The Greyhounds had four players in double figures led by senior
forward Jenny Hackleman (Arroyo Grande, CA/Rutgers Prep {NJ} HS) with 14 points and three
assists. Hackleman, who had a career
high with six steals, added five rebounds to become the sixth player in school
history with at least 650 career rebounds. Hackleman
has 652 career rebounds. Freshman guard Amanda
Brown (Schuylkill Haven, PA/Schuylkill Haven
HS) tossed in 11 points for Moravian with three three-pointers and three
assists. Freshman forward Alyssa Bisci
(Easton, PA/Easton HS) netted a career high ten points to go with four
rebounds while senior guard Katie Rizman
(Wall, NJ/St. Rose HS) added ten points off the bench. Senior forward Kelly Applegate (Easton,
PA/Wilson
HS) scored eight points to improve her career total to 1,257 and move into
eighth all-time at Moravian, and Applegate
had four steals and three rebounds. Freshman guard Kate Harrison (Cold Spring Harbor, NY/Cold Spring Harbor
HS) added seven points and three steals while freshman forward Kirsty Stearns (East Norwich,
NY/Oyster Bay
HS) had five points and five rebounds. Junior guard La'Toya Blake (Allentown, PA/Dieruff HS) contributed five steals,
four points and three rebounds for the Greyhounds.
The Greyhounds earned their third straight victory,
defeating Juniata College, 72-57 in Commonwealth Conference action in Johnston
Hall. Moravian jumped out to a 15-0 lead before the Eagles scored their first
basket at the 11:58 mark. The Greyhounds eventually pushed their first half
lead to 29 points, 41-12 with 27 seconds left in the first half before heading
to the locker room with a 41-16 lead. Moravian was 12 of 34 (34.3 percent) in
the first half from the field, two of four on three-pointers and 15 of 20 from
the foul line. The Greyhounds had a 32-24 advantage on the boards in the first
half. Moravian came out in the second half and pushed the lead to 29 again, twice
with the final time at 47-18 with 18:14 remaining in the game. Juniata would slowly chip into the lead, eventually
pulling within ten points, 64-54, with 3:19 to play. The Greyhounds made nine
of 20 field goal attempts (45.0 percent) in the second half, missed their only
three-point attempt and connected on 13 of 17 free throws. Moravian did finish
the game with a 45-42 edge in rebounds. The Greyhounds had three players score
in double figures led by Applegate
with a game high 20 points. Applegate added nine rebounds and three assists,
and she was eight-for-eight from the foul line in the contest. Applegate has moved into seventh
all-time in scoring at Moravian with 1,277 points, and she is now second
all-time in free throws made 408 and tied for second in free throws attempts
with 531. Hackleman had a
double-double for the Greyhounds with 11 points and a game high 11 rebounds to
go with three assists while Harrison netted ten points to go with four rebounds.
Sophomore forward Cody Fedorishen (Nazareth, PA/Allentown
Central Catholic HS) had career highs of seven points and seven rebounds
for Moravian while Blake contributed
six points and five steals. Freshman guard Jessica
Foran (Annandale, NJ/Rutgers Prep HS),
Brown and Bisci each had four points with Bisci grabbing five rebounds for the Greyhounds.

The Greyhounds captured their fourth straight victory and
won their first Commonwealth Conference game of the season, defeating Lebanon
Valley College, 94-87, in Johnston Hall. Moravian would lead almost the entire
game with the Flying Dutchmen having the lead just once at 3-2. The contest was
tied 11-11 with 13:59 remaining in the first half when the Greyhounds went on a
15-4 run to build a 26-15 lead with 8:10 until the intermission. Lebanon Valley ran off six straight points to
pull within 26-21 but Moravian answered with a 7-0 run to lead 33-21. The
Greyhounds went to the locker room with a 42-33 lead after shooting 14 of 32
from the floor (43.8 percent), six of ten behind the three-point line and eight
of nine at the foul line in the first half. Moravian also had a 19-17 advantage
in rebounds in the first half. The Greyhounds continued to push the lead at the
start of the second half, reaching a 20-point edge twice, the final time at
64-44 with 12:50 remaining in the game. The Flying Dutchmen slowly closed the
game but could get no closer than five points, 92-87, with 17 seconds to play.
Moravian made 13 of 25 field goals (52.0 percent) and five of nine
three-pointers in the second half, and the Greyhounds, tied for 12th in the
nation in free throw percentage, iced the game at the foul line, making 21 of
26 free throws in the final 20 minutes. Both teams finished the contest with 32
rebounds. Moravian had four players in double figures as the Greyhounds'
starting line-up scored 79 of the team's 94 points. Junior forward Eric Whitman (Blairstown, NJ/Notre
Dame East Stroudsburg {PA} HS) tossed in a career high 25 points for
Moravian, including five three-pointers, and he added four rebounds and a pair
of assists. Junior forward Mark Franzyshen (Somerset,
NJ/Immaculata HS) added a
career best 21 points for the Greyhounds including 11 of 13 at the foul line
and seven rebounds. Senior guard Michael
Clemente (Toms River, NJ/Central Regional HS)
netted 14 points to go with five assists, and Clemente was a perfect four-for-four behind the three-point line.
Junior guard Ryan Miller (Easton, PA/Easton HS) had 12 points, three rebounds and three
assists for Moravian while junior forward Steve
Wenderfer (Chester, NJ/Mendham HS) tossed in seven points
and had a game high eight rebounds. Freshman forward Eric Weaver (Succasunna, NJ/Roxbury HS) added five points for the Greyhounds
while senior forward Matt Devlin (Sadsburyville, PA/Coatesville
HS) had four points, two assists and two blocked shots.
Moravian had its four-game winning streak snapped in an
80-76 loss to Juniata
College in Commonwealth
Conference action in Johnston Hall. The Greyhounds had an early 8-6 lead before
Juniata went on a 20-2 run to lead by 16
points, 26-10 with 11:23 remaining. Moravian slowly cut the lead back to four
points before heading into the locker room trailing 40-32. The Greyhounds were
11 of 26 from the field (42.3 percent) in the first half, five of 14 on
three-pointers and five of eight at the foul line. The Eagles also had a 20-14
advantage on rebounds in the first 20 minutes of the game. In the second half,
the Greyhounds cut the lead to one point twice, the final time at 54-53 with
8:14 left on the clock. Moravian shot 15 of 38 (39.5 percent) in the second
half, and the Greyhounds were three of eight on three-pointers and 11 of 15 at
the foul line. Juniata connected on 13 of 28
second half field goal attempts, one of three three-pointers and 13 of 14 free
throws including ten in a row in the final 4:03 to seal the win. The Eagles
also finished the game with a 38-35 edge in rebounds while the Greyhounds
forced Juniata into 14 turnovers while
committing 12 themselves. Moravian had five players in double figures led by Whitman with a game high 20 points to
go with eight rebounds. Franzyshen
and Wenderfer and Miller all tossed
in 11 points with Franzyshen
grabbing seven rebounds. Wenderfer
contributed five rebounds while Wenderfer
and Franzyshen
each blocked two shots. Junior forward Chris
Earley (Brielle, NJ/Manasquan HS) had ten points and four
rebounds for Moravian. Clemente and Devlin each netted five points for the
Greyhounds with Clemente dishing out
three assists.
