Greyhound Weekly Update, February 26, 2007 (-2222-)

 

Women’s Basketball – 16-11 (Commonwealth Conference 9-5, MASCAC 13-7)

            Moravian, seeded third in the Commonwealth Conference Tournament, defeated second seeded Albright College, 68-61, to advance to the Commonwealth Conference Championship game for the fifth straight season. Moravian, which has won six consecutive games scored first and the game was tied at 2-2 before the Greyhounds pulled ahead, 5-2. The Lions would eventually take a 6-5 lead before Moravian went on an 11-2 run to build its biggest lead of the half, 16-8. The Greyhounds kept the lead until the Lions took a 25-24 lead with just under two minutes to play in the first half. Moravian scored the final eight points of the first half to head to the locker room with a 32-25 lead. The Greyhounds made 12 of 33 field goal attempts (36.4 percent) in the first 20 minutes of the contest, one of four three-pointers and seven of 11 free throws. The Greyhounds had a 29-27 edge in rebounds but committed 11 turnovers to just eight turnovers for the Lions. Coming out of the locker room for the second half, Moravian slowly build a ten-point lead, 44-34, with 16:37 to play. Albright fought its way back, eventually tying the contest at 54-54 with 7:50 remaining on the clock. The game would be tied twice more at 56-56 and 58-58 finally with 6:59 to play. Moravian eventually pulled ahead on a jumper by freshman guard Jessica Foran (Annandale, NJ/Rutgers Prep HS) at the 4:41 mark as the Lions did not score again until 11 seconds remained in the contest. The Greyhounds, ranked third in the nation in free throw percentage, put the game away with six of eight free throws in the final 33 seconds. In the second half, Moravian made 12 of 31 field goal attempts (38.7 percent), its only three-point attempt and 11 of 15 free throws. The Greyhounds committed just five turnovers in the second half to finish with 16. Moravian had three players in double figures led by senior forward Jenny Hackleman (Arroyo Grande, CA/Rutgers Prep {NJ} HS), who had a double-double in the first half. Hackleman, who moved into 13th all-time with 1,123 points in her career, finished with game highs of 19 points and 16 rebounds to go with five blocked shots. Hackleman had 13 points, ten rebounds and all five of her blocked shots in the first 20 minutes of the contest.  Senior forward Kelly Applegate (Easton, PA/Wilson HS) and Foran each tossed in 15 points for the Greyhounds with Applegate grabbing nine rebounds to go with two blocked shots and two steals. Foran dished out four assists. Freshman forward Kirsty Stearns (East Norwich, NY/Oyster Bay HS) had nine points and four boards off the bench for Moravian while freshman guard Kate Harrison (Cold Spring Harbor, NY/Cold Spring Harbor HS) contributed seven points and three rebounds. Freshman guard Amanda Brown (Schuylkill Haven, PA/Schuylkill Haven HS) had four assists, three points and a career high three rebounds in the win while junior guard La'Toya Blake (Allentown, PA/Dieruff HS) grabbed four rebounds to go with two assists.

 

            Moravian, seeded third in the Commonwealth Conference Tournament, fell to top seed Messiah College, 79-57, in the 2007 Commonwealth Conference Championship game. The Greyhounds were playing in their fifth straight conference championship contest. Messiah had the lead for the first half, and the Falcons led 31-26 at halftime. Moravian shot just ten of 33 from the field (30.3 percent) in the first 20 minutes, three of eight behind the three-point line and three of six at the foul line. The Greyhounds did have a 23-19 advantage in rebounds at the intermission, and both teams committed 12 first half turnovers. Moravian came out of the locker room quickly to start the second half, pulling within one-point at 33-32, with 18:24 still to play. However, the Falcons slowly pulled away late in the second half, putting the game away at the foul line. Moravian also shot better following the intermission, making ten of 26 field goal attempts (38.5 percent) and 11 of 14 free throws. The Greyhounds, who had a 40-39 edge in rebounds for the game, missed all three of their three-point attempts in the second half. Moravian had three-players in double figures led by Applegate with 21 points to go with nine rebounds. Freshman guard Jessica Foran tossed in 12 points for the Greyhounds while Hackleman (had ten points to go with a game high 11 rebounds. Brown netted six points on a pair of three-pointers to go with three assists for the Greyhounds while Harrison had four points and three boards. Sophomore forward Cody Fedorishen (Nazareth, PA/Allentown Central Catholic HS) added four rebounds and two points while Blake had a game high four steals for Moravian.

            After having its streak of ten straight conference championships snapped a year ago, Moravian won its 11th title in the last 12 years at the 2007 Middle Atlantic Conference Indoor Championships hosted by Susquehanna University. Moravian had a team score of 160 points while the host Crusaders were second with 89 points. Greyhound head coach Doug Pollard was named the MAC Women's Indoor Coach of the Year while freshman Jessica Posimo (Philadelphia, PA/St. Basil Academy) was named the Rookie of the Year. Posimo captured the award after winning the long jump with a leap of 5.22 meters (17 feet, 1 1/2 inches) and triple jump with a distance of 10.65 meters (34 feet, 11 1/4 inches), placing second in the 55-meter hurdles in a time of 8.65 seconds, third in the high jump after clearing 1.52 meters (four feet, 11 3/4 inches) and fifth in the 200-meter dash in a time of 27.72 seconds.

 

            Moravian swept the six scoring places in the 200-meter dash with freshman Dana Haslett (Sellersville, PA/Pennridge HS) capturing first in an MAC meet record time of 25.99 seconds. The Greyhounds had two other individual winners on the women's side with freshman Anna Heim (Moorestown, NJ/Moorestown HS) winning the pole vault with an MAC meet record and NCAA Division III automatic qualifying height of 3.81 meters (12 feet, six inches) and senior Erin Recker (Catasauqua, PA/Catasauqua HS) taking the 55-meter dash in a time of 7.34 seconds. Heim’s height in the pole vault is the second best height of the year to date in Division III, moving her up from 22nd on the NCAA Division III performance list.

 

            Moravian also had two relay teams finish first with the 4x200-meter relay squad of Recker, Haslett senior Amy Reehil (Roselle, NJ/Roselle Catholic HS) and freshman Rachel Beck (Churchville, PA/Council Rock South HS) taking the top spot in 1:46.43 and the 4x400-meter relay team of Heim, Haslett, Reehil and freshman Kaitlyn Boyer (Oley, PA/Oley Valley HS) finishing first in a time of 4:13.37. The Greyhounds other relay teams were seniors Jennifer Connolly (Weare, NH/Manchester West HS) and Suzanne Tamlyn (Wappingers Falls, NY/Wallkill HS) and sophomores Naomie Kachel (Shillington, PA/Governor Mifflin HS) and Kelly Williams (Tafton, PA/Wallenpaupack HS) placing sixth in the 4x800-meter relay with a time of 11:02.68 and the distance medley relay squad of Connolly, Tamlyn, Williams and freshman Katelyn Chando (Coopersburg, PA/Southern Lehigh HS) finishing seventh in 13:45.43.

 

            Haslett was second in the 55-meter dash in 7.35 seconds after running an NCAA Division III provisional qualifying time of 7.32 seconds in the preliminaries. Beck was third in the finals in 7.56 seconds while senior Kathleen McCarron (Nazareth, PA/Nazareth HS) placed fifth at 7.61 seconds. Freshman Queenie Tang (Bedminster, NJ/Chatham HS) just missed qualifying for the finals with a time of 7.73 seconds in the preliminaries while freshman Cassidy Thomas (Arnold, MD/Broadneck HS) was 14th in the preliminaries at 8.06 seconds. In the 200-meter dash, Reehil followed Haslett with a time of 26.59 seconds while Recker was third at 26.60 seconds, Beck in fourth in 26.68 seconds and Tang at sixth in a time of 27.92 seconds. McCarron was tenth in the event in 28.52 seconds. Reehil also placed fourth in the 400-meter dash in 1:01.05 while Boyer was fourth at 1:03.10 and Chando was 11th in a time of 1:07.84.

 

            In the distance events, sophomore Kayla Teeling (Milford, NJ/Phillipsburg HS) placed seventh in the mile run with a time of 5:38.54 while junior Katie Pullizano (Allentown, PA/William Allen HS) took 15th in the 5,000-meter run in 20:25.65.

 

            Heim also placed second in the long jump with a leap of 5.13 meters (16 feet, ten inches) while McCarron was fifth at 5.05 meters (16 feet, seven inches) and freshman Rachel Riggs (Gettysburg, PA/Gettysburg HS) was ninth with a distance of 4.75 meters (15 feet, seven inches). Riggs took fourth in the triple jump with a leap of 10.35 meters (33 feet, 11 1/2 inches) while McCarron was fifth at 10.29 meters (33 feet, 9 1/4 inches). Sophomore Christine Kihm (Quakertown, PA/Quakertown HS) provisionally qualified for the NCAA Division III Championships with a vault of 3.70 meters (12 feet, 1 3/4 meters), just under her best mark of the season. Sophomore Thea Kennerkneckt (Central Valley, NY/Monroe-Woodbury HS) was tenth with a height of 2.74 meters (nine feet).

 

            In the throwing events, freshman Rebeka Woolley (Point Pleasant, NJ/Point Pleasant Boro HS) placed seventh in the shot put with a toss of 10.46 meters (34 feet, four inches) while senior Tammy Balliet (Whitehall, PA/Whitehall HS) was tenth at 9.50 meters (31 feet, two inches). Balliet placed fifth in the 20-pound weight throw with a toss of 12.12 meters (39 feet, 9 1/4 inches) while freshman Flora Robertson (Hawley, PA/East Stroudsburg North HS) was seventh at 11.73 meters (38 feet, six inches).

            The Greyhounds placed second of ten teams at the 2007 Middle Atlantic Conference Indoor Championships hosted by Susquehanna University. Moravian recorded 104 points, just ten points behind champion Elizabethtown College's winning total of 114. Click on the links above for results. Junior Ozzie Brown (Plymouth Meeting, PA/Plymouth Whitemarsh HS) paced the Greyhounds winning the 55-meter hurdles in an MAC meet record and an NCAA Division III automatic qualifying time of 7.53 seconds, the second fastest time in the nation to date. Brown also captured the 200-meter dash in 22.37 seconds, and he was the runner-up in the high jump at 1.97 meters (six feet, five inches), the long jump at 6.78 meters (22 feet, three inches) and the 55-meter dash in 6.51 seconds.

 

            Moravian's only other first place finish in the championship was by the 4x200-meter relay team of Brown, senior Josh Kline (Reading, PA/Exeter HS), junior James Bell (Mohnton, PA/Governor Mifflin HS) and sophomore Robert Shaffer (Pottsville, PA/Pottsville HS) in a time of 1:31.55. The Greyhounds other relay teams included the 4x400-meter squad of Brown, Kline, junior Nathaniel Tussey (Perkiomenville, PA/Boyertown HS) and sophomore Jared Henrie (Pennington, NJ/Hopewell Valley HS) placing third in 3:29.52, the 4x800-meter team of senior Josh Hunter (Palmerton, PA/Palmerton HS), sophomores Jeremiah Reinhart (Effort, PA/Pleasant Valley HS) and Timothy Murphy (Bethlehem, PA/Bethlehem Catholic HS) and freshman Steve Parisi (Kunkletown, PA/Pleasant Valley HS) taking third in a time of 8:12.29 and the distance medley relay squad of Hunter, Henrie, Murphy and Parisi finishing seventh in 10:51.96.

 

            Tussey was the runner-up in the 55-meter hurdles in 7.64 seconds, an NCAA Division III provisional qualifying time that moves Tussey up to a tie for seventh on the performance list. The time was also faster than the previous MAC meet record. Freshman Michael Blenk (Inwood, NY/Lawrence HS) was eighth in the preliminaries of the 55-meter hurdles in 8.28 seconds. Shaffer placed third for the Greyhounds in the 55-meter dash in 6.52 seconds while Bell was eighth in the preliminaries in 6.70 seconds. Shaffer also followed Brown in the 200-meter dash, placing fourth in 23.07 seconds while Kline was sixth in 23.37 seconds and Bell was 11th at 24.10 seconds.

 

            In the distance races for Moravian, Hunter placed fifth in the 800-meter run in a time of 1:59.55 while junior Timothy Pagano (Cherry Hill, NJ/Cherry Hill West HS) finished tenth in the 5,000-meter run in 16:18.79. Freshman Steven DeFazio (Branchburg, NJ/Somerville HS) was 11th in the mile run with a time of 4:44.72 while senior Anthony Sarno (Forked River, NJ/Lacey Township HS) placed 19th at 4:52.62.

 

            Sophomore Blair Maginnis (Asbury, NJ/Warren Hills Regional HS) was the runner-up in the shot put with a toss of 14.85 meters (48 feet, 8 3/4 inches) while junior Nathaniel Dutile (Plymouth, ME/Nokomis HS) took fourth at 14.43 meters (47 feet, 4 1/4 inches). Dutile paced the Greyhounds in the 35-pound weight throw with a toss of 13.61 meters (44 feet, eight inches) that placed him sixth. Senior Steve Kondorossy (Belle Mead, NJ/Montgomery HS) was ninth at 12.72 meters (41 feet, 8 3/4 inches) while Maginnis placed tenth at 12.59 meters (41 feet, 3 3/4 inches) and freshman Ronald Draina (Metuchen, NJ/Metuchen HS) finished 12th with a toss of 11.71 meters (38 feet, five inches).

 

            Blenk was fifth in the long jump with a leap of 6.45 meters (21 feet, two inches), and he took sixth in both the high jump, clearing 1.82 meters (five feet, 11 1/2 inches) and the triple jump with a distance of 12.64 meters (41 feet, 5 3/4 inches). Sophomore Alan Woods (Mechanicsburg, PA/Cedar Cliff HS) placed seventh in the pole vault for Moravian, clearing a height of 3.81 meters (12 feet, six inches).

 

 


Greyhound Weekly Update, February 26, 2007 (-5555-)

 

Men’s Lacrosse – 0-1 (MAC 0-0)

            Moravian began the 2007 season with a 19-6 non-conference loss to Ursinus College at Rocco Calvo Field. The Greyhounds had looked to take a quick 1-0 lead just 17 seconds into the match; however, senior attack Daniel Larson's (Dover, DE/Dover HS) stick was deemed illegal so the goal was taken off the board. Just seconds after his three-minute penalty was released, Larson was knocked out of the contest with an injury. The Bears scored four straight goals after Moravian's disallowed goal to take control of the match. Ursinus led 5-1 after the first quarter and was up 10-3 at the intermission. The Bears found the back of the net six times in the third quarter to extend their lead to 16-5. Ursinus finished the contest with a 48-21 advantage in shots and 51-34 edge in ground balls. The Bears also won 15 of 28 face-offs in the match. Senior midfielder Ken Blom (Rochelle Park, NJ/Bergen Catholic HS) and sophomore attach Jason Tosches (West Windsor, NJ/West Windsor-Plainsboro South HS) each scored two goals for the Greyhounds while senior midfielder T.J. Hirsch (Putnum Valley, NY/Walter Panas HS) had a goal and two assists. Hirsch also won 11 of 22 face-offs for Moravian while scooping up a team high nine ground balls. Sophomore attack Christopher Danni (Macungie, PA/Emmaus HS) found the back of the cage once for Moravian while junior defender David Poppe (Simsbury, CT/Simsbury HS) had an assist. Sophomore goalie Benjamin Larson (Dover, DE/Dover HS) had 16 saves and a pair of ground balls in just over 51 minutes of action for the Greyhounds while junior keeper Peter Coutros (Chalfont, PA/Central Bucks West HS) had one ground ball.

            Moravian begins its 2007 season on Sunday, March 4th under the direction of first-year head coach Paul Engelhardt with a doubleheader against the University of Pittsburgh-Bradford on the first day of the team’s spring trip to Chandler, Arizona.
