This Week – Sat., Mar. 17th vs. *Widener University (DH), 1:00 p.m.

Moravian opened up the 2007 National Fastpitch Coaches Association Division III Leadoff Classic in Panama City Beach, Florida with an 8-1 victory over the University of La Verne (CA). The Greyhounds jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning. Sophomore outfielder Erica Klepeisz (Nazareth, PA/Nazareth HS) led off the game with a double and moved to third on a sacrifice bunt by senior outfielder Lauren Homa (Chalfont, PA/Central Bucks West HS). Klepeisz would score on a wild pitch as senior outfielder Justina Black (Orefield, PA/Parkland HS) drew a walk. La Verne would tie the contest at 1-1 in the bottom of the second inning. Moravian took the lead for good in the top the third inning with two runs. Homa reached on an error and later scored on La Verne's third error of the inning. Black, who had drawn another walk, would score on a wild pitch. The Greyhounds also scored once in the fourth, twice in the fifth and twice in the sixth innings. In the fourth inning, Klepeisz was hit by a pitch to lead off the inning and scored on an RBI single by Black. Sophomore shortstop Jordan Oplinger (Allentown, PA/Parkland HS) hit a one-out single and scored on an RBI grounder by junior second baseman Beth Paly (Whitehall, PA/Whitehall HS). Klepeisz would score again in the fifth on another RBI single by Black. In the sixth inning, sophomore first baseman Sheri Bieniek (Lumberton, NJ/Rancocas Valley HS) drew a walk to lead off the inning and freshman Katie Flood (Branchburg, NJ/Somerville HS) came into pinch run. Flood eventually scored on an RBI single by Oplinger. Senior catcher Danielle Carrione (Bloomfield, NJ/Mt. St. Dominic HS) scored the final run of the game on an RBI grounder by Paly with the bases loaded. Moravian, which left 15 runners on base during the game, pounded out 11 hits with Black, Klepeisz and junior third baseman Kelly Santry (Hatboro, PA/Upper Moreland HS) each collecting two hits. Black had three RBIs while Klepeisz scored three runs and had a double. Santry also had a double while Play drove in a pair of runs. Sophomore pitcher Kristie Pellicani (Sparta, NJ/Sparta HS) improved to 4-0 in the circle this season for the Greyhounds, allowing a run on seven hits and five walks. Pellicani did strike out three batters in the win.

The Greyhounds suffered their first loss of the 2007 season, falling to second-ranked Muskingum (OH) College, 2-1 in eight innings, at the NFCA Leadoff Classic. Moravian, which is ranked 11th in the latest NFCA Division III Top 25 poll, took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the fifth inning. Homa connected on a sacrifice fly to score Oplinger. Oplinger has singled with one-out, moved to second on a single by Klepeisz and moved to third on a wild pitch. The Muskies scored once in the top of the sixth inning to tie the game. The game immediately went to the international tiebreaker in the top of the eighth inning with a runner placed on second base. Muskingum pushed its runner across the plate for a 2-1 lead. Moravian started the bottom of the eighth inning with Klepeisz on second base. Homa laid down a sacrifice bunt to move Klepeisz to third with one out. It looked as if Moravian had tied the game when the next batter, Paly, hit a fly ball that should have been a sacrifice fly. However, Klepeisz was thrown out at the plate to end the game. Each team had just five hits in the game. Moravian sophomore Maria DeBonis (Nazareth, PA/Notre Dame HS) suffered the loss for the Greyhounds, allowing two runs, just one earned, on five hits and three walks. DeBonis did strike out six batters.

Moravian dropped its second straight game at the NFCA Leadoff Classic, falling to ninth-ranked Louisiana College, 5-0. The Greyhounds were limited to just one hit in the game, a leadoff single by Homa in the top of the fourth inning. Homa was eventually caught stealing to end the inning. Louisiana got all the offense it needed with a run in the bottom of the third inning, and Louisiana added two runs in the fourth and two more in the sixth. Pellicani suffered the loss for Moravian, falling to 4-1 on the year. Pellicani allowed five runs, four of them earned, on seven hits and four walks while striking out one batter.

The Greyhounds won their first game in Silver Bracket play at the NFCA Leadoff Classic, defeating Augustana (IL) College, 6-3. The Vikings jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the top of the second inning. The Greyhounds responded in the bottom half of the inning to tie the game at 2-2. Black led off the inning with a single and moved to third on a double by Bieniek. After an out, sophomore catcher Deanna Mangieri (Pleasantville, NY/Byram Hills HS) hit a two-RBI double to score Black and Bieniek. Augustana took the lead right back in the top of the third inning with an unearned run on a passed ball. Moravian tied the contest in the bottom of the fourth inning when Bieniek hit a one-out, solo home run, her first of the season. The Greyhounds would push three runs across the plate in the bottom of the sixth inning for the victory. Mangieri doubled to lead off the inning and Flood came in to pinch run. Flood eventually scored on a sacrifice fly by Homa. An error on a ground ball hit by Paly allowed Oplinger, who also reached on an error, to cross the plate. Bieniek would drive in the final run of the game with a bases loaded walk to score Paly. Moravian had 11 hits in the contest with Mangieri going three-for-three. Black, Bieniek and Klepeisz each had two hits with Bieniek and Mangieri each driving in two runs. DeBonis improved to 2-1 in the circle, allowing three runs, just two earned on six hits and three walks. DeBonis struck out a career high 11 batters in the victory.

Moravian knocked off the country's top ranked team Ithaca (NY) College in the Silver Bracket Semifinals at the NFCA Leadoff Classic. Pellicani tossed a three-hit shutout with three walks and four strikeouts to improve to 5-1 on the season. The Greyhounds gave Pellicani all the offense she needed in the bottom of the first inning with the game's only run. Klepeisz doubled to lead off the inning and moved to third on a sacrifice bunt by Homa. Paly followed with an RBI single to score Klepeisz.
