Greyhound Weekly Update, March 19, 2007 (-2222-)

 

Men’s Tennis – 3-1 (Commonwealth Conference 0-0, MASCAC 0-0)

Last Week – Defeated Muhlenberg College, 5-4; #King’s College match postponed; #Wilkes University match postponed.  #MASCAC match

This Week – Wed., Mar. 21st vs. #FDU-Florham, 3:30 p.m.; Fri., Mar. 23rd at *Elizabethtown College, 3:30 p.m.; Sun., Mar. 25th at #The University of Scranton, 1:00 p.m.  *Commonwealth Conference match, #MASCAC match

 

            The Greyhounds began their 2007 home season with a 5-4 non-conference victory over rival Muhlenberg College. The match was started outside at Hoffman Courts but was moved indoors to Breidegam Fieldhouse after the doubles competition due to a light rain. Moravian led 2-1 after doubles play with an 8-4 win by the team of freshman Ian Box (Charlestown, PA/The Rivers School) and senior Neil Caniga (Hampton, NJ/Voorhees HS) and a 9-8 (7-5) come-from-behind victory by senior Scott Shelbo (Bethlehem, PA/Freedom HS) and sophomore Lee Gustin (Allentown, PA/Dieruff HS). Shelbo and Gustin were down 6-3 at one point in the match. The Greyhounds would capture the top three singles match to earn the win. Box won at first singles, 7-5, 6-2 while Caniga captured a 6-1, 6-0 win at second singles. Shelbo won the contest for Moravian with a 6-4, 7-6 (7-4) win at third singles, his first dual match singles win of the year.

 

            Moravian also had a pair of non-conference match at King’s College and Wilkes University postponed last week due to inclement weather and courts covered by snow and ice.

 

 

 

Softball – 7-3 (Commonwealth Conference 0-0, MASCAC 0-0)

Last Week – *Widener University (DH) postponed to March 25th

This Week – Sat., Mar. 24th vs. *Juniata College (DH), 1:00 p.m.; Sun., Mar. 25th vs. *Widener University (DH), 1:00 p.m.  *Commonwealth Conference game

 

            Moravian had its 2007 Commonwealth Conference opening doubleheader versus Widener University postponed by weather and poor field conditions.  The twinbill has been rescheduled for Sunday, March 25th in Bethlehem starting at 1:00 p.m.

            Moravian had its season opening Commonwealth Conference three-game series with Widener University postponed due to weather and field conditions.  The series has not bee rescheduled at this time.

            Moravian had its 2007 Middle Atlantic Conference season opening match at Susquehanna University postponed due to inclement weather and snow and ice covering the turf field in Selinsgrove.  No make-up date has been set at this time.

 

 


Greyhound Weekly Update, March 19, 2007 (-3333-)

 

Women’s Lacrosse – 0-2 (MAC 0-0)

Last Week – Lost to Muhlenberg College, 16-7; *Susquehanna University postponed to March 22nd.

This Week – Thurs., Mar. 22 vs. *Susquehanna University, 4:30 p.m.; Sat., Mar. 24th vs. *Elizabethtown College, 1:00 p.m.  *Middle Atlantic Conference match

 

            The Greyhounds dropped their first road match of the season, falling to rival Muhlenberg College, 16-7, in non-conference action at Scotty Wood Stadium. The Mules scored the first nine goals before Moravian scored on a free position shot by senior attack Lindsey Lustrino (Spring Lake, NJ/Manasquan HS) in the 16th minute. Muhlenberg then scored the next five goals to go to the intermission with a 14-1 lead. The Greyhounds scored six of the eight goals in the second half. The Mules had a 23-16 advantage in shots, a 25-17 edge in ground balls and a 16-9 advantage in draw controls. Lustrino led Moravian with four goals to boost her school record career total to 119. Junior midfielder Erica Spatz (Pennsauken, NJ/Pennsauken HS), sophomore attack Georgia Castellano (Cherry Hills, NJ/Cherry Hills West HS) and freshman attack Kayla Carson (Wyomissing, PA/Wyomissing HS) each found the back of the cage once for the Greyhounds. Lustrino, junior midfielders Robyn Klem (Allentown, PA/Allentown Central Catholic HS) and Casey Simpson (Laporte, PA/Sullivan County HS) all had three ground balls for Moravian while senior defender Jenna Abramson (Bangor, PA/Bangor HS) led the Greyhounds with three draw controls. Freshman goalie Katie Wise (Ardsley, PA/Abington HS) had five saves for Moravian.

 

            Moravian's 2007 Middle Atlantic Conference home opener versus Susquehanna University scheduled for Saturday, March 17th has been postponed due to inclement weather and poor field conditions. It has been rescheduled for Thursday, March 22nd at 4:30 p.m. in Bethlehem.
