Lost to ^Emory (GA) University, 12-3 (six innings). ^NCAA Division III World Series game, Salem, Virginia
Season Complete
Fifth seeded Moravian dropped its opening game of the
2007 NCAA Division III World Series at the James I. Moyer Complex in Salem, Virginia,
falling to fourth seed DePauw (IN) University, 4-2. The loss snapped a 13-game
winning streak for the Greyhounds. Moravian jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the top
of the third inning. Sophomore outfielder Erica
Klepeisz (Nazareth, PA/Nazareth HS) hit a two-out double to right field and
scored on an RBI single to center field by senior outfielder Lauren Homa (Chalfont, PA/Central Bucks
West HS). The Tigers responded with two runs in the bottom of the fourth
inning to take a 2-1 lead. Moravian tied the game at 2-2 in the top of the
fifth inning. Klepeisz got things
started again with her second double of the game and 13th of the season with
one out. Homa reached on an error
and junior shortstop Beth Paly (Whitehall, PA/Whitehall HS) singled
through the right side to load the bases. However, the Greyhounds were able to
get just one run on a bases loaded walk by junior third baseman Kelly Santry (Hatboro, PA/Upper Moreland
HS). Moravian left a total of eight runners on base in the game including
five in scoring position. DePauw scored twice more in the bottom of the sixth
inning for a 4-2 lead. Moravian had
seven hits in the game with Klepeisz
going two-for-four while DePauw had nine hits including a three-for-three game
from Bartlett.
Sophomore Kristie Pellicani (Sparta,
NJ/Sparta HS) dropped to 17-4 in the circle for Moravian, allowing four
runs on nine hits and a walk while striking out two batters in 5 2/3 innings.
Sophomore Maria DeBonis (Nazareth, PA/Notre
Dame HS) came in to record the final out of the sixth inning.
Moravian, the fifth seed, was eliminated from the 2007
NCAA Division III World Series, falling to eighth seeded Emory (GA) University,
12-3 in six innings in the first elimination game of the tournament. Emory
threatened in the first inning, however, Moravian junior shortstop Beth Paly (Whitehall,
PA/Whitehall
HS) threw a runner out at the plate to keep the Eagles off the board. The
Greyhounds would take a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the second inning on a two-out,
solo home run to left centerfield by sophomore designated player Sheri Bieniek (Lumberton, NJ/Rancocas
Valley HS). The homer was Bieniek's fifth of the season and tenth of her career. Emory
would tie the game in the top of the third inning on a solo home run. The
Eagles took a 3-1 lead in the top of the fourth inning on a two-run homer.
After the home run, Pellicani came
into the circle to replace DeBonis.
The Greyhounds responded in the bottom of the fourth inning to tie the game
again at 3-3. Santry singled to left
field with one out and Bieniek drew
a walk. The hit by Santry was the
100th of her career, the 26th player to reach that milestone and the fourth
this season. After an out, a wild pitch moved Santry to third and Bieniek
to second base, freshman Katie Flood (Branchburg, NJ/Somerville
HS) came in to pinch run for Bieniek.
Senior catcher Danielle Carrione (Bloomfield,
NJ/Mt. St.
Dominic HS) then delivered a two-RBI single to left field to
score Santry and Flood. Emory scored six times in the
top of the fifth inning and the Eagles would add three more runs in the top of
the sixth inning giving Emory a 12-3 lead. Moravian had six hits in the contest
with two by Carrione.
DeBonis allowed three runs on three
hits and two walks with two strikeouts in 3 1/3 innings for the Greyhounds
while Pellicani dropped to 17-5 on
the season, allowing nine runs on ten hits and a walk with one strikeout.
