Greyhound Weekly Update, December 11, 2006 (-2222-)

 

Women’s Basketball – 5-4 (Commonwealth Conference 1-1, MASCAC 3-2)

            The Greyhounds remained undefeated at home, defeating Drew University, 87-85 in overtime, in a non-conference contest at Johnston Hall. Moravian is now 4-0 overall in 2006-07 at home and 9-0 at home all-time against Drew. The Rangers took an early four-point advantage, 8-4 with just 2:18 gone off the clock; however, the Greyhounds responded with a 12-2 run to take a 16-10 lead with 14:27 remaining in the first half. The six-point edge was Moravian's largest of the first half. Drew answered with a 9-0 run, taking a 19-16 lead with 12:38 left in the first 20 minutes and the teams would go back-and-forth for the remainder of the first half with the Greyhounds pushing the lead to five points twice and heading to the locker room with a 38-37 lead. The Greyhounds pushed the lead to three points in the first minute of the second half before Drew had a 9-2 run to take a 46-42 lead with 16:23 remaining in regulation. Moravian then turned in a 13-4 run to take a 55-50 lead with 11:12 left in the second half. The Greyhounds' lead eventually hit eight on three occasions, the final time at 75-67 with 2:07 left in regulation; however, Moravian scored just one point the rest of the way and missed three of four free throws in the final 22 seconds as the Rangers tied the contest with seven seconds left. The Greyhounds scored the first points of the five-minute overtime on a put back by freshman guard Kate Harrison (Cold Spring Harbor, NY/Cold Spring Harbor HS) and Moravian led the entire overtime period. Moravian had four players in double figures led by senior forward Kelly Applegate (Easton, PA/Wilson HS)with a game high 25 points. Applegate also had a career high assists while grabbing seven rebounds to move into tenth all-time at Moravian with 554 career rebounds. Senior forward Jenny Hackleman (Arroyo Grande, CA/Rutgers Prep {NJ} HS) netted 14 points for the Greyhounds in her first start of the season, and she added two assists and two steals. Harrison and junior guard La'Toya Blake (Allentown, PA/Dieruff HS) each scored 11 points for Moravian; the first time in Blake's career she hit double figures. Harrison added four rebounds and three assists while Blake had three boards and two steals. Freshman guard Jessica Foran (Annandale, NJ/Rutgers Prep HS) had eight points, five rebounds and two assists in the win while freshmen forward Kirsty Stearns East Norwich, NY/Oyster Bay HS)and Alyssa Bisci (Easton, PA/Easton HS) and guard Amanda Brown (Schuylkill Haven, PA/Schuylkill Haven HS) all scored six points. Stearns added a team high eight rebounds for Moravian while Bisci had four assists and four boards.

 

            Moravian dropped a 64-57 non-conference decision at fourth-ranked The University of Scranton. Moravian scored the first two points of the game before the Royals ran off eight straight points for an 8-2 at the 15:35 mark. Scranton would continue to stretch its lead in the first half to as many as 21 points with a 30-9 lead with 4:03 to play before the intermission. The Greyhounds closed the half with a 14-2 run to head to the locker room, trailing, 32-23. Moravian continued its run when the second half started, scoring ten of the first 15 points to pull within four points at 37-33 with 16:04 left in the game. Scranton eventually pushed the lead back into double digits for most of the remaining time. The Greyhounds had two players in double figures led by a career high 15 points by Stearns, who also had seven rebounds in the contest. Hackleman had her first double-double of the season with a career high 17 rebounds to go with ten points, four steals and three blocked shots. Hackleman became the sixth player in school history to reach 600 career rebounds, and she has a total of 609 in her career. Harrison contributed nine points and five rebounds for Moravian while Brown netted six points. Foran had five points and four rebounds in the game while sophomore forward Cody Fedorishen (Nazareth, PA/Allentown Central Catholic HS) had four points. Bisci and senior guard Katie Rizman (Wall, NJ/St. Rose HS) each had three points with Rizman added three steals for the Greyhounds. Applegate, the team’s leading scorer, was held scoreless for the first time since November 20, 2004, and Applegate had just four rebounds in the game.

 

            The Greyhounds suffered their second straight loss, falling to Ursinus College, 72-60, in non-conference action as the Greyhounds now have 24 days off before their next game on January 3rd.  The Greyhounds had won nine straight games over the Bears and had not lost to Ursinus in Johnston Hall since the first game the two schools played in Bethlehem on January 16, 1981. Moravian had won 17 straight home games against Ursinus since that first loss, and the Greyhounds now own a 29-8 all-time lead in the series. Ursinus jumped out to a 10-0 lead in the first three minutes before Moravian got on the scoreboard with a lay-up by Applegate at the 16:24 mark. The closest the Greyhounds would get the rest of the way was six points, 55-49, after a three-point play by Hackleman. The Greyhounds had four players in double figures led by Foran, who tied her career high with 17 points. Foran also had three rebounds, two assists and two steals. Hackleman had her second straight double-double with 15 points and 12 rebounds while Applegate and Stearns each netted 11 points. Applegate contributed nine rebounds and four assists while Stearns had five rebounds, three assists and two steals. Fedorishen added four points and two rebounds for the Greyhounds while Bisci had two points and two rebounds. Blake had three rebounds and three assists.

            Moravian snapped a two-game losing streak, defeating FDU-Florham, 85-67, in non-conference action in Johnston Hall. With the game tied at 3-3, the Greyhounds put together a 15-0 run to take an 18-3 lead with 11:25 remaining in the first half. The Devils, who lost their second straight game after opening the season with a five-game winning streak, responded with a 12-2 run to cut Moravian's lead to 20-15 with 8:44 until the intermission; however, the Greyhounds quickly scored seven points to put the lead back in double digits for the rest of the game with a 27-15 lead with 7:01 left in the first half. Moravian stretched the lead to 27 points several times in the second half and led 85-59 when the Greyhounds scored their final points with 3:12 left in the contest. Moravian had three players score in double figures led by 17 points by junior forward Eric Whitman (Blairstown, NJ/Notre Dame East Stroudsburg {PA} HS), who also had six rebounds. Junior guard Ryan Miller (Easton, PA/Easton HS) tossed in 13 points to go with three assists and three rebounds while senior guard Michael Clemente (Toms River, NJ/Central Regional HS) had 12 points and four assists for the Greyhounds. Junior forward Steve Wenderfer (Chester, NJ/Mendham HS), junior forward Mark Franzyshen (Somerset, NJ/Immaculata HS) and senior forward Matt Devlin (Sadsburyville, PA/Coatesville HS) each tossed in nine points for Moravian with Wenderfer contributing five rebounds. Devlin added team highs of seven rebounds and three blocked shots while Franzyshen had three boards. Freshman forward Eric Weaver (Succasunna, NJ/Roxbury HS) had six points and five rebounds for the Greyhounds while junior forward Chris Earley (Brielle, NJ/Manasquan HS) had six rebounds, two points and a pair of blocked shots in the win. Junior guard Greg Jones (Bronx, NY/Mt. St. Michael Academy) dished out a team high six assists to go with three points, three steals and two rebounds for Moravian while sophomore forward Dave Bowden (Beachwood, NJ/Toms River South HS) had three points and three rebounds.

 

            The Greyhounds won their second straight non-conference game, rallying from an eight-point halftime deficit to defeat Delaware Valley College, 66-62. Delaware Valley led by as many as 10, 18-8, with 10:40 remaining in the first half and it took a 30-22 advantage into the intermission. Moravian trailed for most of the game, but a free throw by Earley gave the Greyhounds a 46-45 lead with exactly seven minutes to go. The lead changed hands eight times after that until four straight points by Moravian gave the squad a 58-53 advantage with 2:12 to go. Moravian had three players in double figures led by Franzyshen, who netted a career high 20 points including a three-point play with 13.7 seconds left to give the Greyhounds a 64-60 lead. Franzyshen also had five rebounds and two steals. Earley and Wenderfer each tossed in 13 points for Moravian with Earley contributing seven rebounds and three steals and Wenderfer grabbing a team high nine boards. Miller had eight points, four assists and three rebounds for Moravian while Weaver added six points and three rebounds. Whitman was limited to two points for the Greyhounds; however, he did grab nine rebounds while Clemente contributed three assists, three rebounds and two points. Jones had a career high five steals for Moravian.

 

            Moravian dropped a 72-59 decision at The University of Scranton in non-conference action. The loss snapped a two-game winning streak for the Greyhounds.  The Royals led the entire first half with the largest lead being 12 points.  Scranton's lead would hit ten three times in the second half, the final time at 55-45 with 9:59 remaining on the clock. The Greyhounds put together an 11-1 run to pull within one point, 57-56, on a pair of free throws by Earley with 3:38 to play. However, Moravian made just three of four free throws and missed all six of its field goal attempts as Scranton ended the game with a 15-3 run to seal the victory. The Greyhounds did finish the game with a 35-31 advantage in rebounds. Moravian had two players in double figures led by Franzyshen with a game high 19 points. Franzyshen also grabbed eight rebounds to lead the Greyhounds. Whitman tossed in 15 points, 13 in the first half, with three boards while Miller added nine points, five assists and four rebounds.  Jones came off the bench to contribute five points, four rebounds, two assists and two steals as well as taking several charges for Moravian while Earley had four points and three rebounds. Wenderfer grabbed five rebounds and scored two points while Weaver had three points and three rebounds for the Greyhounds.

            Moravian had six individuals and one relay team place first at the non-scoring Lehigh University Season Opener indoor meet at Rausch Fieldhouse between the Greyhounds, the Mountain Hawks and DeSales University. All times are hand held. Freshman Dana Haslett (Sellersville, PA/Pennridge HS) won the 60-meter dash in 7.8 seconds and the 200-meter dash in 26.0 seconds while senior Amy Reehil (Roselle, NJ/Roselle Catholic HS) captured the 400-meter dash in 1:03.5. Freshman Anna Heim (Moorestown, NJ/Moorestown HS) won the long jump with a leap of 5.27 meters (17 feet, 3 1/2 inches) while freshman Rebeka Woolley (Point Pleasant, NJ/Point Pleasant Boro HS) won the shot put with a toss of 10.89 meters (35 feet, 8 3/4 inches). Freshman Rachel Riggs (Gettysburg, PA/Gettysburg HS) recorded a winning distance of 10.85 meters (35 feet, 7 1/4 inches) in the triple jump. Moravian "A" 4x400-meter relay squad of Reehil, Haslett, Heim and freshman Kaitlyn Boyer (Oley, PA/Oley Valley HS) was first in 4:19.9.

            Senior Erin Recker (Catasauqua, PA/Catasauqua HS) placed second to Haslett in the 60-meter dash in 7.9 seconds while freshman Alessandra Valdetara (Butler, NJ/Butker HS) and senior Kathleen McCarron (Nazareth, PA/Nazareth HS) tied for third at 8.2 seconds. Freshman Queenie Tang (Bedminister, NJ/Chatham HS) was tied for eighth in the 60-meter dash in 8.3 seconds while Heim placed tenth in 8.4 seconds and freshman Cassidy Thomas (Arnold, MD/Broadneck HS) was 11th in a time of 8.6 seconds. Freshman Jessica Posimo (Philadelphia, PA/St. Basil Academy) took second in the 60-meter hurdles in 9.5 seconds while Tang was fourth at 10.0 seconds and Heim placed fifth in 10.4 seconds. Boyer took second to Rehill in the 400-meter dash in a time of 1:04.5 while freshman Katelyn Chando (Coopersburg, PA/Southern Lehigh HS) finished fifth in 1:06.7. Recker also finished fourth in the 200-meter dash in a time of 27.7 seconds while Reehill was fifth in 27.8 seconds. Posimo and Tang tied for sixth in the 200-meter dash in 28.0 seconds while freshman Leslie Pope (Pottsville, PA/Pottsville HS) took tenth in 32.9 seconds.

            Sophomore Kelly Williams (Tafton, PA/Wallenpaupack HS) placed third in the 1,000-meter run in a time of 3:28.8 seconds while sophomore Stephanie Miller (Easton, PA/Easton HS) was seventh in the 800-meter run in 2:43.2. The Greyhounds "B" 4x400-meter relay team Chando, Tang, Williams and Thomas was fifth in the race in 4:49.5.

            In other field results, Posimo placed third in the long jump with a leap of 5.22 meters (17 feet, 1 1/2 inches) while McCarron was fourth at 5.11 meters (16 feet, 9 1/4 inches). Haslett placed fifth in the long jump with a distance of 5.08 meters (16 feet, eight inches) while Valdetara took sixth at 5.05 meters (16 feet, seven inches). Thomas was 14th in the event with a leap of 4.27 meters (14 feet, 1/4 inch). Posimo was second in the triple jump with a distance of 10.73 meters (35 feet, 2 1/2 inches) while McCarron took fifth at 10.34 meters (33 feet, 11 1/4 inches). Heim was second in the pole vault, clearing ten feet, six inches (3.20 meters) while sophomore Thea Kennerknecht (Central Valley, NY/Monroe-Woodbury HS) was fifth at a height of nine feet, six inches (2.89 meters). Posimo was tied for third in the high jump, clearing the bar at four feet, ten inches (1.47 meters) while Heim was tied for 12th at four feet, eight inches (1.42 meters).

            Freshman Flora Robertson (Hawley, PA/East Stroudsburg North HS) was third in the 20-pound weight throw with a toss of 9.90 meters (32 feet, 5 3/4 inches), and Robertson was third in the shot put with a distance of 9.29 meters (30 feet, 5 3/4 inches). Junior Ashlee Scarborough (Warrington, PA/Villa Joseph Marie Academy) was fifth in the shot put at 7.96 meters (26 feet, 1 1/2 inches) while Pope took sixth with a toss of 7.93 meters (26 feet, 1/4 inch).

            The Greyhounds competed at the Lehigh University Season Opener indoor meet at Rausch Fieldhouse with the host Mountain Hawks and DeSales University. All times in the meet are hand held times. Moravian had six first place finishes with a pair by junior Ozzie Brown (Plymouth Meeting, PA/Plymouth Whitemarsh HS), who won the 400-meter dash in a time of 51.1 seconds and the long jump with a leap of 7.05 meters (23 feet, 1 3/4 inches) that provisionally qualified him for the NCAA Division III National Championships in March. Junior Nathaniel Tussey (Perkiomenville, PA/Boyertown HS) won the 60-meter hurdles in 8.0 seconds while sophomore Blair Maginnis (Asbury, NJ/Warren Hills Regional HS) captured the shot put with a toss of 14.44 meters 47 feet, 4 1/2 inches). Freshman Michael Blenk (Inwood, NY/Lawrence HS) won the triple jump with a distance of 12.90 meters (42 feet, four inches) while junior Allan Fatzinger (Catasauquqa, PA/Catasauqua HS) cleared 13 feet (3.96 meters) on his first attempt to win the pole vault.

            In other sprint race results, junior James Bell (Mohnton, PA/Governor Mifflin HS) placed third in the 60-meter dash in 7.1 seconds while junior Robert Shaffer (Pottsville, PA/Pottsville HS) was fourth in the same time. Senior Josh Kline (Reading, PA/Exeter HS) ran a time of 7.2 seconds to tie for fifth while Blenk posted a time of 7.4 seconds in the 60-meter dash to place eighth. In the 60-meter hurdles, Brown also ran 8.0 seconds but was just edged by Tussey and settled for second while Blenk placed fifth in 8.5 seconds. Tussey would finish 0.2 second behind Brown in the 400-meter dash to place second in a time of 51.3 seconds while junior Vince Pagano (Harrisburg, PA/Central Dauphin East HS) placed 12th in 56.6 seconds. Freshman Nick Shubert (Doylestown, PA/Central Bucks East HS) was 14th in the 400 meters in a time of 56.9 seconds while freshman Steve DeFazio (Branchburg, NJ/Somerville HS) was 15th in 57.6 seconds. Sophomore Stephen Mulchay (Whitehall, PA/Whitehall HS) and freshman Nicholas Kennedy (Lake Ariel, PA/North Pocono HS) tied for 16th in the event with a time of 57.7 seconds while junior Timothy Pagano (Cherry Hill, NJ/Cherry Hill West HS) was 18th in 1:01.1. In the 200-meter dash, Kline was second in 23.5 seconds while Bell placed fourth in 23.7 seconds and Shaffer was fifth at 23.8 seconds.

            Senior Josh Hunter (Palmerton, PA/Palmerton HS) placed second in the 1,000-meter run in 2:40.3 while freshman Tim Betz (Havertown, PA/Haverford HS) placed fifth in 3:05.1. Sophomore John McCullough (Levittown, PA/Conwell Egan HS) took sixth in the 800-meter run with a time of 2:19.3. The Greyhounds 4x800-meter relay squad of Hunter, McCullough, DeFazio and Timothy Pagano finished sixth in a time of 8:55.0 while the 4x400-meter "A" relay team of Brown, Tussey, Kline and Blenk was second at 3:32.4 and the "B" relay squad of Kennedy, Mulchay, Vince Pagano and sophomore Timothy Murphy (Bethlehem, PA/Bethlehem Catholic HS) was fifth in 3:45.0.

            In other field event results, Blenk was third in the long jump with a leap of 6.82 meters (22 feet, 4 1/2 inches) while Brown was second in the high jump, clearing a height of six feet, four inches (1.93 meters) and Blenk placed fifth at five feet, ten inches (1.77 meters). Sophomore Alan Woods (Mechanicsburg, PA/Cedar Cliff HS) took third in the pole vault, clearing 12 feet, six inches (3.81 meters), and Brown was fourth at a height of 12 feet (3.65 meters).

            Freshman Ronald Draina (Metuchen, NJ/Metuchen HS) was fifth in the 35-pound weight throw with a toss of 10.84 meters (35 feet, 6 3/4 inches) while freshman Matthew Wisotsky (Bushkill, PA/East Stroudsburg North HS) was seventh in the event at 9.31 meters (30 feet, 6 1/2 inches).
