Men’s Basketball – 10-4
(Landmark Conference 1-0)
Moravian had its nine-game winning streak snapped and
lost for the first time in nearly two months as the Greyhounds fell to Juniata
College, 95-90, in overtime in a Landmark Conference contest on the road.
Moravian's nine-game winning streak was the longest for the program in over 30
years since a ten-game winning streak during the 1975-76 season.
The Greyhounds had an early lead, up four points, 11-7, after a jumper by
senior forward Chris Earley
(Brielle, NJ/Manasquan HS) with 16:17 remaining in the first half. However,
Juniata would take control of the first half from that point with an 8-0 run
and led by as many as 18 points, 43-25, at the 2:16 mark. Moravian was 14 of 31
(45.2 percent) from the floor in the first half, four of 13 behind the three-point
line and made its only free throw attempt. The Greyhounds would fight their way
back into the contest in the second half, eventually taking the lead back on a
lay-up by Earley
with 11:13 remaining. Moravian eventually built an eight-point lead after a three-point
play by senior guard Chris Bays
(Hackettstown, NJ/Pope John XXIII HS) at the 6:11 mark gave the Greyhounds
a 71-63 advantage. The Eagles then ran off eight straight points to tie the
game at 71-71 with 4:29 remaining. Moravian led by three points, 82-79, after a
lay-up by senior forward Mark Franzyshen (Somerset, NJ/Immaculata HS) with just 31
seconds left on the clock, but a Juniata free throw with 16 seconds and an
Eagle lay-up with six seconds left forced the overtime session. The Greyhounds shot
better in the second half, connecting on 19 of 29 field goal attempts (65.5
percent), four of seven three-pointers and seven of 12 free throws. Moravian
scored first in the overtime session on a jumper by Earley, and a Franzyshen
jumper gave the Greyhounds and 86-84 lead with 3:37 to play. Moravian would
have the lead just once more, 88-86, on a jumper by freshman guard Maurice Young (Philadelphia, PA/Chestnut
Hill Academy) with 1:50 on the clock. The Eagles made four free throws in
the final 17 seconds to finish off the game. The Greyhounds were just four of
ten in the extra five minutes and missed their only three-point attempt. Franzyshen led
the five Greyhounds in double figures with 24 points to go along with five
rebounds. Earley
and senior guard Ryan Miller (Easton,
PA/Easton HS) each had 18 points for Moravian with Earley tying his career high of
11 boards for his second double-double of the season. Miller dished out three assists while Earley had two. Bays had a career high 11 points with
two assists, two steals and two rebounds for the Greyhounds while freshman
forward Chris Cullen (East Islip,
NY/East Islip HS) added ten points. Sophomore forward Eric Weaver (Succasunna, NJ/Roxbury HS) had five points for
Moravian while Young and senior
forward Eric Whitman (Blairstown, NJ/Notre
Dame East Stroudsburg {PA} HS) each contributed two points and five
rebounds.
The Greyhounds dropped their second straight Landmark
Conference game after a nine-game winning streak, falling to host Susquehanna
University, 92-81. Moravian scored first on a jumper by Miller, who would finish the game with a career
high 34 points, before the Crusaders scored five straight points. The
Greyhounds' final lead of the game was at 8-7 on a three-pointer by Whitman at the 16:30 mark. Susquehanna
took the lead for good on a jumper 15 seconds later. Moravian trailed by just a
point, 15-14, after a three-pointer by Earley with 13:15
remaining in the first half; however, the Crusaders went on a 14-3 run to build
a 29-17 lead at the 8:55 mark. Susquehanna would push its lead to as many as 24
points in the first half before heading to the locker room with a 49-27
advantage. Moravian was just eight for 23 from the field (34.8 percent), five
of ten behind the three-point line and six of seven at the foul line in the
first half. Susquehanna's lead hit 28
points, 57-29, with 16:22 remaining in the game before a 10-0 Moravian run made
the lead 57-39 at the 15:13 mark. The Greyhounds would eventually get the lead
below ten points on a Miller free
throw at 75-66 with just 3:26 remaining. Moravian would get within seven points
twice in the final minute and a half before Susquehanna put the game away with
nine points. The Greyhounds shot the ball a little better in the second half,
making 16 of 37 field goal attempts (43.2 percent), four of 12 three-pointers
and a perfect 18-for-18 at the foul line. Miller
was one of three Greyhound players in double figures with his career high 34
points passing his previous career best by ten points. Miller, who also grabbed six rebounds, was a perfect 12-for-12 at
the foul line in the game, and he was also nine of 16 from the floor and four
of eight behind the three-point line. Earley contributed 15 points and a team high eight rebounds
for Moravian while Whitman had 13
points and three boards. Franzyshen had
eight points and four rebounds in the game for the Greyhounds while Cullen tossed in five points. Young had four points, three assists
and three steals for Moravian.
