Men’s Basketball – 13-5 (Landmark
Conference 4-3)
Moravian
won its third straight Landmark Conference game, defeating Drew University,
66-58. The victory clinched the Greyhounds their first regular season winning
record since the 2002-03 season. The Rangers scored first in the game before
Moravian senior forward Eric Whitman
(Blairstown, NJ/Notre Dame East Stroudsburg {PA} HS) tied the score with a
lay-up. The Greyhounds took the lead on a pair of free throws by senior forward
Mark Franzyshen
(Somerset, NJ/Immaculata HS). After a brief tie at 5-5 with 16:01 to play
in the first half, the Greyhounds took the lead for good, 7-5, on a lay-up by
senior forward Chris Earley
(Brielle, NJ/Manasquan HS) with 15:36 before halftime. Moravian eventually
pushed its lead to double figures, 20-10, on a pair of free throws by freshman
forward Chris Cullen (East Islip, NY/East
Islip HS) with 8:24 remaining in the half. The Greyhounds headed to the
locker room with a 35-26 lead after shooting 13 of 23 from the field (56.5
percent), four of eight behind the three-point line and five of eight at the
foul line in the first 20 minutes. Moravian had a 15-14 advantage in rebounds
in the first half while both teams turned the ball over six times. The
Greyhounds quickly pushed the lead into double figures in the second half and
would lead by 15 points, 43-28, after a pair of free throws by senior guard Ryan Miller (Easton, PA/Easton HS) with
17:17 to play. Drew would eventually cut Moravian's lead to six points twice,
the final time at 45-39, with 11:21 remaining in the contest. The Greyhounds
would get the lead back into double digits and hold their largest lead of the
game 16 points, 66-50, with 1:59 to play. Moravian was 11 of 23 from the floor
(47.8 percent), four of ten behind the three-point line and five of six at the
foul line in the second half. The Greyhounds had a 30-25 edge in rebounds for
the game despite committing 20 turnovers in the game including 14 in the final
20 minutes. Moravian had four players in double figures led by Franzyshen, who
had 15 points to go with five rebounds and three steals. Whitman tossed in 14 points and grabbed seven rebounds for the
Greyhounds while Miller had 12
points. Earley
had his third straight double-double and fifth of the season with ten points
and a game high ten rebounds to go with three assists. Cullen had eight points off the bench for the Greyhounds while
senior guard Chris Bays (Hackettstown,
NJ/Pope John XXIII HS) added three points and three assists in his first
collegiate start.
The
Greyhounds dropped a Landmark Conference game in the program's first-ever trip
to the United States Merchant Marine Academy, 88-73, snapping Moravian's
three-game winning streak. Moravian jumped out to a 4-0 lead on baskets by Earley and Franzyshen. The
Mariners would take their first lead of the game, 7-6, with 16:00 minutes on
the clock on a pair of free throws. The contest went back and forth throughout
the first half with the Greyhounds building a 20-15 lead with 11:53 before in
the intermission on a lay-up by freshman forward Chris Cullen. USMMA responded with a 7-0 run to take a 22-20 lead
at 10:12 on a pair of free throws. Moravian would hold its final lead of the
game, 30-29, with 5:43 remaining in the first half after a three-pointer by Whitman. The Greyhounds would tie the
contest on last time in the first half after a pair of free throws by Earley knotted
the contest at 36-36 with 2:19 until the intermission. The Mariners headed to
the locker room with a 40-38 halftime lead. The Greyhounds were also hot from
the field in the first 20 minutes, making 15 of 26 field goal attempts (57.7
percent), two of seven three-pointers and six of seven free throws. The
Mariners would push their lead to seven points, 52-45, on a three-pointer with
16:36 to play, only to see Moravian cut the lead to one point at 52-51 on a
three-point play by Cullen at the 15:25
mark. USMMA quickly responded and push its lead to double digits for the first
time in the game, 63-53, with 11:44 to play. The Greyhounds would close within
two points twice, first on a three-pointer by Miller and then on a pair of Earley free throws, 68-66, with
5:49 remaining. The Mariners responded with a 9-0 run to build a 77-66 lead
with 3:16 to play on a pair free throws. USMMA's lead would reach 17 points,
88-71, on a lay-up with 14 seconds to play. The Greyhounds shooting cooled in
the second half, making just 12 of 28 field goal attempts (42.9 percent), two
of eight three-pointers and nine of 12 free throws. Moravian did finish the
game with a 27-24 edge in rebounds. Earley led five Moravian players in double figures with a
game high 20 points to go along with a game high seven rebounds. Franzyshen added
15 points and five rebounds while Whitman
had 12 points and four rebounds for the Greyhounds. Cullen tossed in 11 points and grabbed three rebounds while Miller contributed ten points and a team
high five assists. Freshman guard Steve Siracusa (New Providence, NJ/New Providence HS) added
five points and two rebounds in the game while sophomore forward Eric Weaver (Succasunna, NJ/Roxbury HS)
grabbed three rebound off of the bench for Moravian.

Moravian won its fourth straight game, defeating Drew
University, 60-49, in Landmark Conference action. The Rangers jumped out to a
4-0 lead and held several leads until the Greyhounds took a 10-8 lead at the
10:21 mark on a jumper by sophomore guard Amanda
Brown (Schuylkill Haven, PA/Schuylkill Haven HS).
Drew would retake the lead and the contest was tied seven times before Moravian
retook the lead, 24-22, on a lay-up by sophomore forward Alyssa Bisci (Easton, PA/Easton HS)
with 1:11 remaining in the first half. Bisci's
bucket would give the Greyhounds the lead for the remainder of the game.
Moravian headed into the locker room with a 27-23 lead after shooting 11 of 35
from the floor (31.4 percent) and five of six at the foul line in the first 20
minutes of the game. The Greyhounds missed all five of its three-point attempts
while holding an 18-16 edge in rebounds. Moravian committed just seven turnovers
in the first half while Drew had nine turnovers. Moravian would hold the lead
the entire second half, eventually pushing its lead to double figures. The
Greyhounds would lead by 11 points, 41-30, after a jumper by sophomore guard Kate Harrison (Cold Spring Harbor, NY/Cold
Spring Harbor HS) at the
13:16 mark. Moravian's largest advantage was 13 points, 60-47, after a pair of Brown free throws with 1:14 to play to
finish off the scoring for the Greyhounds. Moravian was 12 of 25 from the floor
(48.0 percent) and nine of 12 from the foul line in the second 20 minutes while
missing all three three-point attempts. Both teams had 31 rebounds while the
Greyhounds had 14 turnovers to 18 for Drew. Moravian had three players in
double figures with Bisci and Harrison each netting 17 points. Bisci also had four rebounds and a pair
of assists while Harrison, whose 17
points were a career high, had three rebounds. Sophomore forward Kirsty Stearns (East Norwich, NY/Oyster Bay HS) added 12 points and five rebounds for the Greyhounds
while Brown tossed in five points
and added three assists. Sophomore forward Lauren
Fornazor (Rivervale, NJ/Pascack Valley HS) grabbed a career high eight rebounds
for Moravian to go with two points and two assists while senior guard LaToya Blake (Allentown, PA/Dieruff
HS) had four rebounds, four points and four steals.
Sophomore guard Jessica Foran (Annandale, NJ/Rutgers Prep HS) added three points and three rebounds for the
Greyhounds.
The Greyhounds had their four-game Landmark Conference winning
streak snapped in a 58-57 loss in the program's
first-ever trip to the United States Merchant Marine Academy. The loss also
dropped Moravian into a tie for second place in Landmark Conference action. The
Greyhounds jumped out to a 2-0 lead on a jumper by Harrison, and that would be Moravian's largest lead of the contest.
The Greyhounds would hold a one-point lead at four other points in the first
half, the final time at 14-13 with 10:46 before halftime on a jumper by Stearns. The Mariners would retake the
lead on a three-pointer at the 10:24 mark. Moravian tied the
contest for the third time at 16-16 on a Harrison
jumper before USMMA hit a jumper to give the Mariners the lead for the
next 18 minutes. The Greyhounds trailed just 22-21 with 4:45 remaining in the
first half after a pair of Stearns
free throws, but USMMA put together a 10-1 run to push the lead to double
digits at 32-22 with just 45 seconds remaining before the intermission. The Mariners
had a 32-26 halftime lead. Moravian
struggled shooting the ball in the first half, making just nine of 24 field
goal attempts (37.5 percent), three of eight three-pointers and five of six
free throws. Early in the second half, the Greyhounds pulled within a point,
36-35, on a three-pointer by Foran at the 15:10 mark, and Moravian tied the contest at
38-38 on a pair of free throws from Blake
with 12:10 to play. The Mariners put together an 11-2 run to build a 49-40 lead
with 7:25 remaining, and USMMA still led by nine points, 55-46, with 4:31 to
play. The Mariners hit a free throw with 2:19 remaining in the contest to give
USMMA a 58-51 lead; however, the Mariners would not score again. Moravian would
pull within a point, 58-57, on a Harrison
lay-up with 51 seconds left, but the Greyhounds would get just one shot off the
remainder of the game. Moravian's shooting woes continued in the second half,
making just 11 of 36 field goal attempts (30.6 percent), two of six
three-pointers and seven of nine free throws. The Greyhounds had just six
turnovers in the final 20 minutes for 23 in the game while forcing USMMA into
27 turnovers for the contest. The Greyhounds did have a balanced scoring attack
with four players in double figures. Harrison tossed in a game high 14 points
and grabbed two rebounds while Foran had 12 points and two steals. Brown contributed 11 points, two assists, two steals and two
rebounds for Moravian while Stearns
had ten points, a game high nine rebounds and three steals. Bisci added five points and four
rebounds for the Greyhounds while Blake
had a game high six assists, six rebounds and three steals to go with her two
points.

Men’s Track and Field – 0-0 (Landmark Conference 0-0)
Moravian placed
fourth of ten teams at the 16th Annual John Covert Classic hosted by Lehigh
University. The Greyhounds scored 61.40 points while the host Mountain
Hawks won the meet with 162 points. Moravian was the top NCAA Division III team
in the event and defeated four NCAA Division I programs. The Greyhounds had three individual first
place finishes, all three by senior Ozzie
Brown (Plymouth Meeting, PA/Plymouth Whitemarsh HS).
Brown captured the 60-meter dash in
a school record time of 6.99 seconds, and he won the 60-meter hurdles in a
school record and NCAA Division III provisional qualifying time of 8.13
seconds. Brown also captured the
long jump with an NCAA Division III provisional qualifying leap of 7.01 meters
(23 feet). Brown also scored two
more points for Moravian with a fifth place finish in the 200-meter dash in
23.32 seconds.
Other competitors that scored points
for Moravian were senior Nathaniel
Tussey (Perkiomenville, PA/Boyertown Area HS) earning eight points with a
second place finish in the 500-meter dash in 1:08.74 and six more points with a
third place finish in the 60-meter hurdles in 8.45 seconds, sophomore Michael Blenk (Inwood, NY/Lawrence HS) garnering 1.4 points while
tying for fourth place in the high jump, clearing 1.80 meters (five feet, 10
3/4 inches) and two points in the triple jump with a leap of 13.18 meters (43
feet, three inches), good enough for fifth place and junior Blair Maginnis
(Asbury, NJ/Warren Hills Regional HS) earning six points for a third place
finish in the 35-pound weight throw with a toss of 14.79 meters (48 feet, 6 1/4
inches) and two points for a fifth place showing in the shot put with a
distance of 14.44 meters (47 feet, 4 1/2 inches).
Senior James Bell (Mohnton, PA/Governor Mifflin HS) just missed qualifying
for the finals in the 60-meter dash, placing seventh in the preliminaries and
winning his heat in 7.21 seconds. Freshman Eric
Woodruff (Brodheadsville, PA/Pius X HS) was tied for ninth in the 60-meter
dash in 7.27 seconds while freshman Warner
Jones (Hillsborough, NJ/Hillsborough HS) took 21st at 7.55 seconds and Blenk was 25th
at 7.65 seconds. Blenk
also ran a time of 8.98 seconds in the 60-meter hurdles, placing tenth in the
preliminaries. In the 200-meter dash, it was Woodruff just missing the scoring, placing seventh overall and
winning his heat in 23.61 seconds. Bell
was just behind Woodruff in eighth
at 23.62 seconds while Jones took
14th overall and won his heat in 24.24 seconds and Blenk was 19th in 24.41 seconds.
Senior Vince Pagano
(Harrisburg, PA/Central Dauphin East HS) also took 27th in the 200-meter
dash in 25.03 seconds while junior Alan
Woods (Mechanicsburg, PA/Cedar Cliff HS) was 33rd and won his heat in 25.36
seconds and senior Allan Fatzinger (Catasauqua, PA/Catasauqua HS) took 34th in
25.38 seconds.
Jones
placed 12th in the 400-meter dash and won his heat in 54.84 seconds while
junior Jared Henrie
(Pennington, NJ/Hopewell Valley HS) took 14th in 54.91 seconds and Pagano was 17th
at 55.88 seconds. Junior Jacob Tazik (Wyomissing, PA/Wyomissing HS) placed eighth in
the 500-meter dash in 1:10.76, winning his heat while sophomore Steve DeFazio (Branchburg, NJ/Somerville HS)
captured his heat and was 13th overall in 1:13.56. Senior Khizer Tariq (Bethlehem, PA/Saucon Valley HS)
took 15th in a time of 1:14.44. Freshman Connor
Skutches (Bethlehem, PA/Liberty HS) was ninth in
the mile run in a time of 4:33.68 while junior Jeremiah Reinhart (Doylestown, PA/Pleasant Valley HS) was 14th in
4:29.35 and sophomore Timothy Betz (Havertown,
PA/Haverford HS) took 30th in 5:06.28. Junior Timothy Murphy (Bethlehem, PA/Bethlehem Catholi
HS c) tied for 15th in the 800-meter run with a time of 2:07.02 while
sophomore Steve Parisi
(Kunkletown, PA/Pleasant Valley HS) was 28th in 2:15.27. Senior Timothy Pagano (Cherry
Hill, NJ/Cherry Hill West HS) placed 13th in the 3,000-meter run in a time
of 9:49.80.
Moravian's 4x800-meter relay team of
Reinhart, Skutches, DeFazio and Parisi
placed fourth in a time of 8:24.39 while the Greyhounds' 4x400-meter
"A" relay squad of Brown, Jones, Bell and Vince Pagano was seventh in a time of 3:41.28. The
"B" team of Henrie,
Tazik, Khizer and Murphy did not place but posted a time
of 3:44.03 in the 4x400-meter relay.
In the field events, Woods and Fatzinger tied with four other
competitors for eighth in the pole vault, clearing the bar at 4.25 meters (13
feet, 11 1/4 inches) while freshman Adam
Pollini (Shamokin Dam, PA/Lewisburg HS) was tied
for 18th at 3.65 meters (11 feet, 11 3/4 inches). Blenk tied for ninth in the long
jump at 6.39 meters (20 feet, 11 3/4 inches) while Brown was 14th in the shot put with a toss of 11.79 meters (38
feet, 8 1/4 inches). Sophomore Matthew Wisotsky (Bushkill, PA/East Stroudsburg North HS) also
competed in the shot put, placing 24th at 9.10 meters (29 feet, 10 1/4 inches),
and he was 18th in the 35-pound weight throw with a toss of 9.17 meters (30
feet, one inch). Freshman Troy Bertholf (Liberty, NY/Liberty HS) was 16th in the
weight throw at 12.40 meters (40 feet, 8 1/4 inches).

Moravian placed
sixth of 11 teams at the 16th Annual John Covert Classic hosted by Lehigh
University. The Greyhounds scored 33 points while the Sacred Heart
University won the meet with 132 points. Moravian was the top NCAA Division III
team in the event and defeated two NCAA Division I programs. The Greyhounds had
one individual champion with sophomore Anna
Heim (Moorestown, NJ/Moorestown HS) capturing the pole vault, clearing a
height of 3.60 meters (11 feet, 9 3/4 inches) which provisionally qualified her
for the NCAA Division III National Championships.
Sophomore Rachel Beck (Churchville, PA/Council Rock South HS) earned four
points with a fourth place finish in the 60-meter dash in 8.13 seconds, and she
earned another two points for a fifth place showing in the 200-meter dash in
26.73 seconds. Freshman Sydni Wisniewski (Orlando, FL/Winter Park HS)
garnered eight points for a runner-up finish in the 500-meter dash in 1:21.88
while junior Kayla Teeling
(Milford, NJ/Phillipsburg HS) earned two points for placing fifth in the
mile run in a time of 5:29.08. Sophomore Jessica
Posimo (Philadelphia, PA/St. Basil Academy)
earned six points for a third place finish in the triple jump with a distance
of 10.90 meters (35 feet, 9 1/4 inches) and one point with a sixth place finish
in the 60-meter hurdles in 9.47 seconds.
Wisniewski
also placed eighth in the preliminaries of the 60-meter dash in 8.18 seconds
while Posimo
was 27th in 8.54 seconds. Sophomore Katelyn
Chando (Coopersburg, PA/Southern Lehigh HS) was
15th in the 60-meter dash in a time of 8.50 seconds while sophomore Symonne Scott (Attleboro, MA/Attleboro HS)
placed 16th in 8.51 seconds in her first meet with the Greyhounds. In the
200-meter dash, Posimo
placed 14th overall and won her heat in 27.70 seconds while sophomore Rachel Riggs (Gettysburg, PA/Gettysburg HS)
took 18th overall and first in her heat in 28.38 seconds. Freshman Alyssa Wert (Orefield, PA/Allentown Central
Catholic HS) was 20th in the race in 28.55 seconds while Scott took 22nd and won her heat in
28.79 seconds and Chando
was 23rd in 28.88 seconds. Chando placed tenth in the 400-meter dash in 1:04.67 while Wert placed 14th in a time of 1:07.90
and freshman Alexandra Lopez (Manasquan,
NJ/Manasquan HS) finished 16th in 1:09.96. Freshman Kaleen Holden (Scranton, PA/Bishop Hannan HS)
was 14th in the 500-meter dash in 1:32.81 while Lopez posted a time of 10.04 seconds in the 60-meter hurdle
preliminaries.
Junior Kelly Williams (Tafton, PA/Wallenpaupack HS)
was tenth in the 5,000-meter run for the Greyhounds in a time of 20:38.49 while
freshman Tara Chiarella
(Hallstead, PA/Montrose Area HS) placed 13th in the 3,000-meter run with a
time of 12:00.54. Freshman Kristen Labert (Coopersburg, PA/Southern Lehigh HS) took 28th
in the 800-meter run in 2:44.23 while junior Naomie Kachel (Shillington, PA/Governor Mifflin HS)
took 32nd in 2:51.45. Moravian's 4x800-meter relay team of Williams, Holden Labert and Chiarella placed seventh in
11:19.62.
In the field events, Wisniewski was seventh in the high
jump, clearing 1.60 meters (five feet, three inches) while Posimo tied for 17th at a height
of 1.50 meters (four feet, 11 inches). Junior Thea Kennerknecht (Central Valley,
NY/Monroe-Woodbury HS) tied for 11th in the pole vault, clearing 2.85
meters (nine feet, 4 1/4 inches). Riggs
was tenth in the long jump with a leap of 4.96 meters (16 feet, 3 1/4 inches)
while Posimo
placed 11th at 4.87 meters (15 feet, 11 3/4 inches) and senior Ashlee Scarborough (Warrington, PA/Villa
Joseph Marie HS) took 16th with leap of 4.37 meters (14 feet, four inches).
Riggs also placed seventh in the
triple jump with a distance of 10.30 meters (33 feet, 9 1/2 inches).
