Men’s Basketball – 15-5 (Landmark
Conference 6-3)
Moravian remained undefeated at home with a 76-69
victory over Susquehanna University in Landmark Conference action in Johnston
Hall. The Crusaders, who entered the game unbeaten in Landmark Conference
action, jumped out to a 4-0 lead before the Greyhounds scored on a lay-up by
senior forward Mark Franzyshen
(Somerset, NJ/Immaculata HS) at the 17:36 mark. Moravian tied the game at
6-6 and again at 8-8 before taking a 10-8 lead on a lay-up by senior forward Chris Earley
(Brielle, NJ/Manasquan HS) with 12:28 remaining in the first half. After
falling behind, 11-10 on a three-pointer Susquehanna, The Greyhounds would take
the lead for good on a lay-up by freshman guard Steve Siracusa (New Providence, NJ/New
Providence HS) with 9:53 left before the intermission. Siracusa's bucket started an 8-0
run for Moravian to build an 18-11 lead on a jumper by senior guard Ryan Miller (Easton, PA/Easton HS) with
6:39 remaining in the half. The Greyhounds' lead would briefly hit
double-digits, 26-16, on a lay-up by sophomore forward Eric Weaver (Succasunna, NJ/Roxbury HS) with 3:37 to play before
Moravian headed to the locker room with a 32-25 halftime lead. The Greyhounds
were 13 of 34 (38.2 percent) from the floor in the first half, two of 12 on
three-pointers and four of seven at the foul line. Moravian also had a 22-19
edge in rebounds in the first 20 minutes while committing just six turnovers. The
Greyhounds would have the lead the entire half including a six minute stretch
when the lead remained in double figures. Moravian's largest lead of the second
half was 14 points, 66-52, after a Miller
jumper with 3:39 remaining, and the closest the Crusaders would get was five
points on two occasions, the final time at 47-42 with 10:05 remaining. The
Greyhounds shot the ball better in the second half, making 14 of 26 field goal
attempts (53.8 percent), five of nine three-pointers and 11 of 15 free throws.
Moravian also finished the game with a 37-35 edge in rebounds, and the
Greyhounds had just 15 turnovers for the game while forcing Susquehanna into 17
turnovers. Moravian had four players in double figures with Miller netting a team high 18 points to
go with three rebounds. Franzyshen
had 15 points, six rebounds and a career high four assists while Weaver tossed in 14 points, which tied
his career high, to go along with six boards. Earley had ten points and a team
high seven rebounds for the Greyhounds before leaving the game with an injury
at the 11:40 mark of the second half. Sophomore guard Maurice Young (Philadelphia, PA/Chestnut Hill Academy) returned to
the Moravian line-up after missing two games and added nine points, three
assists and three steals while senior forward Eric Whitman (Blairstown, NJ/Notre Dame East Stroudsburg HS)
contributed eight points and six rebounds.
The
Greyhounds captured their ninth straight home game of the season and moved into
sole possession of second place in the Landmark Conference with a 77-62 victory
over Juniata College in Johnston Hall. Moravian is now 9-0 on the season at
home. The Greyhounds fell behind 4-0 before getting on the scoreboard on a
lay-up by Weaver at the 18:04 mark. Moravian
would eventually take a 9-8 lead on a lay-up from Franzyshen with 14:49 to player
in the first half. The lead would go back-and-forth with Juniata leading by as
many as four points, 15-11, with 11:51 to play in the first half on a lay-up.
The Eagles had a 17-15 lead after a lay-up with 9:53 to play before the
Greyhounds took the lead for good, 20-17, on a three-pointer by Whitman at the 8:41 mark. Moravian
headed to the locker room with its largest lead of the half, nine points, 34-25
after a Weaver three-pointer with 37 seconds remaining before the intermission.
The Greyhounds were 14 of 27 from the field (51.9 percent), three of nine on
three-pointers and three of five at the foul line in the first 20 minutes of
the game. Both teams had 14 rebounds in the first half with Moravian turning
the ball over just six times while Juniata had ten turnovers. The Greyhounds
eventually pushed their lead to double digits, 41-31, on a three-point by Miller with 16:49 to play, and the
closest the Eagles would get again was six points, 54-48, after a lay-up with
7:23 remaining. Moravian's largest lead of the game was the final advantage of
15 points. The Greyhounds made 12 of 25 field goal attempts (48.0 percent),
four of seven three-pointers and 15 of 18 free throws
in the second half, and Moravian finished the game with a 32-29 edge in
rebounds. The Greyhounds has 12 turnovers for the game while forcing Juniata
into 18 turnovers. Moravian had four players in double figures with a game high
22 points from Miller, who also had
three assists and three rebounds. Miller’s
22 points moved him within 35 of 1,000 for his collegiate career. Franzyshen added
15 points and a game high eight rebounds while Young tossed in 12 points. Weaver,
starting for Earley
who missed the game with an injury, had ten points while Whitman contributed seven points and six rebounds for the
Greyhounds. Freshman forward Chris
Cullen (East Islip, NY/East Islip HS) and Siracusa each had four points
off of the bench for Moravian with Siracusa adding three rebounds and three assists. Senior
guard Chris Bays (Hackettstown, NJ/Pope
John XXIII HS) contributed three points and three assists for the
Greyhounds.

Moravian dropped its second straight Landmark Conference
game and its first home game of the season, falling to Susquehanna University,
57-49, in Johnston Hall. The Crusaders jumped out to a 4-0 lead before the
Greyhounds scored on a free throw by senior guard LaToya Blake (Allentown, PA/Dieruff HS) at the
17:26 mark. However, Susquehanna scored the next ten points to jump out to a
14-1 lead. Moravian's first field goal was scored by sophomore forward Alyssa Bisci (Easton, PA/Easton) HS
with 13:11 remaining in the first half to cut the Susquehanna lead to 14-3. The
Greyhounds would get within six points, 26-20, on a pair of Bisci free throws with 2:28 remaining
before the intermission but the Crusaders would head to the locker room with a
32-20. Moravian struggled shooting the ball in the first half, making just four
of 32 field goal attempts (12.5 percent), one of four three-pointers and 11 of
13 free throws. The Greyhounds had just three turnovers in the first 20 minutes
while forcing Susquehanna into five turnovers. Moravian would slowly cut into
the lead in the second half, eventually pulling within two points, 47-45 with
3:46 remaining in the contest on a Blake
free throw but Susquehanna finished the contest on a 10-4 run. The Greyhounds
struggled shooting the ball all game, connecting on just ten of 37 second half
field goal attempts (27.0 percent) and nine of 15 free throws while missing all
six of their three-point attempts. Moravian did have a season low eight
turnovers in the contest while forcing Susquehanna into 16 miscues and the
Greyhounds had a 49-47 edge in rebounds for the game. Bisci had a double-double for the Greyhounds with game highs of 14
points and 14 rebounds, which was also a career high for Bisci on the boards. Sophomore guard Jessica Foran (Annandale, NJ/Rutgers Prep HS)
added 13 points and five rebounds for Moravian while sophomore guard Kate Harrison (Cold Spring Harbor, NY/Cold
Spring Harbor HS) had eight points and five boards. Blake and sophomore forward Kirsty Stearns (East
Norwich, NY/Oyster Bay HS) each had six rebounds and four points with Blake adding six steals and a pair of
assists while Stearns blocked two
shots. Sophomore guard Amanda Brown
(Schuylkill Haven, PA/Schuylkill Haven HS) had six points off the bench for
the Greyhounds while sophomore forward Lauren
Fornazor (Rivervale, NJ/Pascack Valley HS)
grabbed four boards.
The Greyhounds snapped a two-game losing streak and moved
into sole possession of second place in the Landmark Conference with a 70-64
victory over Juniata College in conference action in Johnston Hall. Moravian
jumped out to a 2-0 lead on a jumper by freshman guard/forward Emily Smith (East Stroudsburg, PA/East
Stroudsburg South HS) just 17 seconds into the game. The Greyhounds were up
6-2 after a lay-up by Harrison
before Juniata scored seven straight points to take a 9-6 lead
with 15:54 to play in the first half. Moravian tied the game on a three-pointer
by Smith only to see the Eagles take
a four-point lead 13-9. The Greyhounds tied the contest again at 16-16 on a
jumper by Stearns with 10:47
remaining before the intermission only to see Juniata retake a four point lead at
the 9:31 mark. The Eagles would retain the lead for the remainder of the first
half with Moravian pulling within one point three times, the final time at
30-29 on a free throw by Blake with
3:19 to play. Juniata would have a pair of six point leads in the half before
heading to the locker room with a 37-34 lead. Moravian was 11 of 35 (31.4
percent) from the field, two of eight behind the three-point line and ten of 14
at the foul line. Moravian had a 20-17 edge in rebounds in the first half while
committing just eight turnovers and forcing Juniata into 13 miscues. Early in
the second half, Juniata built another six-point lead, 42-36 on a three-pointer.
The Greyhounds responded with a 12-0 run, capped off by a pair of free throws
by Foran
with 14:57 remaining in the game to give Moravian a 48-42 lead. The Greyhounds
would maintain their advantage until the six minute mark when Juniata hit a
jumper to give the Eagles a brief, 59-58 lead. Neither team scored for the next
2:11 before Moravian retook the lead on a three-pointer by Brown with 3:49 to play. Brown's
three-pointer started an 8-0 run to give the Greyhounds a 66-59 lead with 2:05
remaining after a lay-up by Bisci.
Moravian, ranked in the top ten in the nation in free throw percentage,
connected on four straight free throws in the final 32 seconds to ice the game.
The Greyhounds were 12 of 29 from the field (41.4 percent), two for three on
three-pointers and ten of 12 at the foul line in the final 20 minutes of the
game. Moravian had three players in double figures led by Harrison and Stearns,
who each scored 16 points. Harrison
added a career high six assists and five rebounds while Stearns had three boards. Smith
made her first career start and added ten points. Fornazor and Brown each netted eight points for the
Greyhounds with Fornazor
grabbing six boards. Bisci had five
points and five rebounds for Moravian while Foran contributed five points
and three rebounds. Blake had five
rebounds, three assists and three steals to go with two points.

Men’s Track and Field – 0-0 (Landmark Conference 0-0)
The
Greyhounds had two competitors, senior Ozzie
Brown (Plymouth Meeting, PA/Plymouth Whitemarsh HS)
and sophomore Michael Blenk (Inwood, NY/Lawrence HS),
compete in the Muhlenberg College Pentathlon with both surpassing the 3,000
point mark to qualify for the 2008 Eastern Collegiate Athletic Conference
Indoor Championships. Brown won the
event with a total of 3,715 points while Blenk was second of the eight
competitors with 3,078 points.
Brown was first in four of the five events, capturing the
55-meter hurdles in 7.5 seconds for 919 points, the long jump with an NCAA Division III automatic qualifying leap of
7.26 meters (23 feet, ten inches) for 876 points, the shot put with a toss of
12.55 meters (41 feet, 2 1/4 inches) for 640 points and the high jump, clearing
1.91 meters (six feet, 3 1/4 inches) for 723 points. Brown was fifth in the 1,000-meter run, earning 557 points for a
time of 3:11.2.
Blenk started the
pentathlon by placing second in the 55-meter hurdles in 8.2 seconds for 738
points. He was then second in the long jump with a leap of 6.51 meters (21
feet, 4 1/2 inches) for 700 points before finishing sixth in the shot put with
a toss of 8.78 meters (28 feet, 9 3/4 inches) to earn 413 points. Blenk then tied
for second in the high jump, clearing 1.84 meters (six feet, 1/2 inch) before
finishing fourth in the 1,000-meter run in a time of 3:10.1 to earn 566 points.
Moravian finished first of ten NCAA
Division II and Division III teams at the Thomson Invitational hosted by the
University of Delaware. The Greyhounds scored 131 points while Temple University
won the Division I meet with 149.5 points. Moravian had four individual
champions Brown capturing the long
jump with an Eastern Collegiate Athletic Conference qualifying distance of 6.88
meters (22 feet, seven inches) and the 60-meter hurdles in an NCAA Division III
provisional and ECAC qualifying time of 8.29 seconds to earn 20 points. Junior Blair Maginnis (Asbury,
NJ/Warren Hills Regional HS) won the shot put with a school record, NCAA
Division III provisional and ECAC qualifying distance of 15.67 meters (51 feet,
five inches) while senior Nathaniel
Tussey (Perkiomenville, PA/Boyertown Area HS) won the 500-meter dash in an
ECAC qualifying time of 1:07.59 with both student-athletes earning ten points.
The Greyhounds had three other
performances qualify for the ECAC Championships with Tussey qualifying in the 60-meter hurdles in 8.49 seconds, which
was second to Brown in the race. Maginnis
qualified in the 35-pound weight throw with a second place toss of 14.84 meters
(48 feet, 8 1/4 inches) while junior Alan
Woods (Mechanicsburg, PA/Cedar Cliff HS) placed second in the pole vault,
clearing a qualifying height of 4.35 meters (14 feet, 3 1/4 inches).
Blenk earned four points for
placing fifth in the 60-meter hurdles in 9.22 seconds while senior James Bell (Mohnton, PA/Governor Mifflin HS)
garnered a point for an eighth place in the 60-meter dash in 7.28 seconds.
Freshman Eric Woodruff (Brodheadsville,
PA/Pius X) earned six points for the Greyhounds with a third place finish
in the 200-meter dash in 23.53 seconds while Bell earned two points for placing seventh in the race in 23.85
seconds. Junior Jacob Tazik (Wyomissing, PA/Wyomissing HS) placed third in
the 500-meter dash in 1:11.47 to earn six points while junior Timothy Murphy (Bethlehem, PA/Bethlehem
Catholic HS) was fifth in the race in 1:11.63 to earn Moravian four points.
Sophomore Steve Parisi
(Kunkletown, PA/Pleasant Valley HS) earned a point for an eighth place
finish in the 800-meter run in 2:08.55.
Woodruff
was 13th in the preliminaries of the 60-meter dash in 7.46 seconds. Freshman Warner Jones (Hillsborough, NJ/Hillsborough
HS) was 11th in the 200-meter dash in 24.18 seconds and 11th in the
400-meter dash in 54.00 seconds. Junior Jared
Henrie (Pennington, NJ/Hopewell Valley HS) placed
12th in the 400-meter dash in 54.47 seconds.
Freshman Connor Skutches (Bethlehem, PA/Liberty HS)
garnered eight points for the Greyhounds for a second place finish in the mile
run in a time of 4:38.48 while junior Jeremiah
Reinhart (Doylestown, PA/Pleasant Valley HS) earned six points for pacing
third in the race in 4:38.50. Moravian's 4x800-meter relay squad of Skutches, Reinhart, Parisi and Tazik placed second in a time of
8:22.75 to earn eight points while the 4x400-meter relay squad of Tazik, Murphy, Henrie and sophomore Steve DeFazio (Branchburg, NJ/Somerville HS)
placing fifth in 3:42.54 to earn six points.
In other field events, Blenk earned six
points with a third place finish in the long jump, leaping 6.32 meters (20
feet, nine inches) while freshman Troy Bertholf (Liberty, NY/Liberty HS) earned four points
with a fifth place in the 35-pound weight throw with a toss of 12.81 meters (42
feet, 1/2 inch).

The Greyhounds had two competitors,
sophomore Jessica Posimo
(Philadelphia, PA/St. Basil Academy) and freshman Sydni Wisniewski (Orlando, FL/Winter Park HS),
compete in the Muhlenberg College Pentathlon with both surpassing the 2,700
point mark to qualify for the 2008 Eastern Collegiate Athletic Conference
Indoor Championships. Posimo
won the event with a school record total of 2,940 points while Wisniewski was
second of the five competitors with 2,736 points, which also surpassed the
previous school record.
Posimo placed first in three of the
five events, capturing the 55-meter hurdles in 8.7 seconds to earn 807 points,
the high jump, clearing 1.55 meters (five feet, one inch) to earn 678 points
and the long jump with a leap of 5.21 meters (17 feet, 1 1/4 inches) to earn
617 points. Posimo
was second in the 800-meter run in a time of 2:48.3 to earn 479 points while
finishing fourth in the shot put with a toss of 7.37 meters (24 feet, 2 1/4
inches) to earn 359 points.
Wisniewski
finished first in the 800-meter run in a time of 2:34.2 to garner 638 points,
and she was second in the long jump at 5.17 meters (16 feet, 11 1/2 inches) to
earn 606 points and the shot put with a toss to 9.29 meters (30 feet, 5 3/4
inches) to earn 483 points. Wisniewski
was third in the high jump clearing 1.43 meters (four feet, 8 1/4 inches), and
she finished fourth in the 55-meter hurdles in 10.4 seconds for 465 points.
Moravian placed third of ten NCAA
Division II and Division III teams at the Thomson Invitational hosted by the
University of Delaware. The Greyhounds scored 92 points while Adelphi
University won the meet with 141 points. The host Blue Hens won the Division I
meet with 137.5 points. Moravian had three individual champions with sophomore Rachel Riggs (Gettysburg, PA/Gettysburg HS) capturing the long jump with a leap of 4.85 meters
(15 feet, 11 inches) and the triple jump in an Eastern Collegiate Athletic
Conference qualifying distance of 10.51 meters (34 feet, 5 3/4 inches) to earn
20 points. Junior Thea Kennerkneckt
(Central Valley, NY/Monroe-Woodbury HS)
earned ten points with a first place finish in the pole vault, clearing 2.90
meters (nine feet, 6 1/4 inches).
The Greyhounds had three other ECAC
qualifying performances. Posimo was second in the 60-meter hurdles in 9.55 seconds to
earn eight points after Posimo
qualified first in a school record, NCAA Division III provisional and ECAC
qualifying time of 9.10 seconds. Sophomore Rachel
Beck (Churchville, PA/Council Rock South HS)
finished second in the 200-meter dash in 26.96 seconds for eight points and
third in the 60-meter dash in 8.03 seconds for six points.
Posimo earned eight more points
with a second place finish in the triple jump with a distance of 10.47 meters
(34 feet, 4 1/4 inches), and she gained the team five points for a fourth place
finish in the high jump, clearing 1.45 meters (four feet, nine inches).
Freshman Alexandra Lopez (Manasquan,
NJ/Manasquan HS) earned
five points for a fourth place finish in the 60-meter hurdles in 10.23 seconds
while sophomore Symonne Scott (Attleboro, MA/Attleboro HS) gained four points for a fifth place in the 200-meter dash in 28.42
seconds. Scott also earned one point
for an eighth place finish in the 60-meter dash in 8.56 seconds while Riggs earned three points in the
200-meter dash with a sixth place finish in 28.50 seconds. Sophomore Katelyn Chando
(Coopersburg, PA/Southern Lehigh HS)
earned two points in the 60-meter dash, placing seventh in 8.56 seconds, and
one point in the 200-meter dash for an eighth place finish in 28.75 seconds.
Wisniewski
garnered five points for the Greyhounds with a fourth place finish in the
400-meter dash with a time of 1:02.81 while freshman Tara Chiarella (Hallstead, PA/Montrose Area HS) earned three points for a sixth place in the
3,000-meter run in 11:39.71. Senior Katie
Pulizzano (Allentown, PA/William Allen HS) added two points in the 3,000-meter run, placing
seventh in 11:47.62 while junior Kelly
Williams (Tafton, PA/Wallenpaupack HS) earned a point for placing eighth in a time of
11:49.20.
Freshman Alyssa Wert (Orefield, PA/Allentown Central Catholic HS) also competed in the 200-meter dash, placing ninth in
28.81 seconds, and she was 14th in the 400-meter dash in 1:06.88. Chando also ran
in the 400-meter dash, placing tenth in 1:04.85.
