Moravian senior jumper/sprinter Ozzie Brown (Plymouth Meeting, PA/Plymouth Whitemarsh) has captured the NCAA Division III National Championship in the men's long jump at the 2008 NCAA Division III Indoor National Championships hosted by Ohio Northern University. Brown, who entered the meet with the season's best jump, leaped 7.31 meters (23 feet, 11 3/4 inches) on his third and final jump of the preliminaries, and the distance held up to win the meet. The runner-up was defending national champion Greg Tyson of Heidelberg College at 7.26 meters (23 feet, ten inches).
Brown, who earns All-American honors for the second time in his career and first time in the long jump, becomes the ninth Moravian student-athlete to win a national championship and eighth in track & field. His jump was his longest of the season after qualifying at 7.29 meters (23 feet, 11 inches). Brown's ten points have the Greyhounds tied for third of 25 teams that had scored points in the team standings after the first day of competition.
"A lot of people were rooting for me, and I just thought about how it wasn’t just for me anymore, it was about my coach, my family, and my friends," Brown said after the events. "My coach (Doug Pollard) past away in October and I dedicated my season to him. I’ve spent three years waiting to be here for the long jump and finally my senior I had my last hurrah with a big jump."
Brown competed in two other events on the first day of the NCAA Championship meet. He entered the meet ranked second in the 55-meter high hurdles, and Brown won his preliminary heat with the day's fastest time of the day at 7.47 seconds to head to the championship race on Saturday at 2:55 p.m. Brown will be in lane four of the finals and is assured of earning All-American honors for the second time in the meet and third time in his career. Brown was fourth in the 55-meter hurdles at the 2007 NCAA Championships.
Brown's other event was the 55-meter dash, which he entered tied for 13th. He ran a time of 6.44 seconds, but finished fifth in his heat and 10th overall, failing to advance to the finals.
Greyhound senior jumper/sprinter Ozzie Brown earned All-America honors for the second time in two days and the third time in his career as he finished third in the 55-meter high hurdles in a time of 7.51 seconds at the 2008 NCAA Division III Indoor Track & Field National Championships hosted by Ohio Northern University in Ada, Ohio. Jonathan Garcia of UMass-Dartmouth won the race in 7.46 while Jon Schellin of the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater was second in 7.49 seconds.
With Brown’s six points for his third place finish and the ten points from his national championship in the long jump on Friday, Moravian finished sixth in the team scoring with 16 points. A total of 66 schools earned points with the University of Wisconsin-LaCrosse winning the team title with 43 points.
