Greyhound Weekly Update, March 31, 2008 (-2222-)

 

Men’s Track and Field – 0-0 (Landmark Conference 0-0)

            The Greyhounds began their 2008 outdoor season with a second place finish of five teams at the Lafayette College ESU 5-Way meet competed at East Stroudsburg University of Pennsylvania. The Warriors were first with 97 points while Moravian was second with 72, Lafayette had 60 points for third place, Rider University was fourth with 47 points and Kutztown University took fifth with 11 points. The Greyhounds had five of individual champions with senior Ozzie Brown (Plymouth Meeting, PA/Plymouth Whitemarsh) winning three events. Brown captured the 110-meter high hurdles in an NCAA Division III provisional qualifying time of 14.63 seconds, and he also won the 100-meter dash in 10.85 seconds and the long jump with a leap of 6.78 meters (22 feet, three inches). Junior Blair Maginnis (Asbury, NJ/Warren Hills Regional) captured the shot put with a toss of 14.36 meters (47 feet, 1 1/2 inches) while senior Nathaniel Tussey (Perkiomenville, PA/Boyertown Area) won the 400-meter hurdles in an NCAA Division III provisional qualifying time of 54.32 seconds. Tussey also provisionally qualified in the 110-meter high hurdles, in 14.73 seconds, finishing as the runner-up to Brown in the race.

In other sprint results, sophomore Eric Woodruff (Brodheadsville, PA/Pius X) was third in the 100-meter dash in 11.00 seconds while junior Robert Shaffer (Pottsville, PA/Pottsville) was fourth in 11.01 seconds, senior James Bell (Mohnton, PA/Governor Mifflin) was sixth at 11.40 seconds and senior Vince Pagano (Harrisburg, PA/Central Dauphin East) was ninth in 11.83 seconds. Woodruff took second in the 200-meter dash in a time of 22.06 seconds while Bell placed fifth in 23.09 seconds, Shaffer finished sixth in 23.17 seconds and Pagano was tenth in 24.23 seconds. Freshman Warner Jones (Hillsborough, NJ/Hillsborough) took seventh in the 400-meter dash in 54.23 seconds. Sophomore Michael Blenk (Inwood, NY/Lawrence) was fifth in the 110-meter high hurdles in 15.94 seconds while junior Jared Henrie (Pennington, NJ/Hopewell Valley) finished sixth in the 400-meter hurdles in 1:04.43.

Shaffer, Brown, Bell and Woodruff combined to run a time of 43.72 seconds in the 4x100-meter relay, placing second while Tussey, Jones, Woodruff and Brown had a time of 3:32.30 while placing second in the 4x400-meter relay. Moravian's "B" relay squad of junior Jacob Tazik (Wyomissing, PA/Wyomissing), senior Josh Hunter (Palmerton, PA/Palmerton), sophomore Steven DeFazio (Branchburg, NJ/Somerville) and junior Timothy Murphy (Bethlehem, PA/Bethlehem Catholic) ran a time of 3:40.36 in the 4x400-meter relay.

Tazik was sixth in the 800-meter run in a time of 2:02.58 while Murphy was ninth in 2:04.88. DeFazio took 13th in the 800 meters in 2:06.44 while senior Khizer Tariq (Bethlehem, PA/Saucon Valley) was 17th in 2:10.74. Hunter led the Greyhounds in the 1,500-meter run with a fifth place finish of 4:12.06. Junior Jeremiah Rinehart (Doylestown, PA/Pleasant Valley) was eighth in the 1,500 meters in 4:15 .21 while freshman Connor Skutches (Bethlehem, PA/Liberty) took tenth in 4:24.27, DeFazio placed 11th in 4:25.18 and sophomore Steve Parisi (Kunkletown, PA/Pleasant Valley) finished 12th in a time of 4:34.25. Hunter would also finish third in the 3,000-meter run in 9:09.70 while senior Timothy Pagano (Cherry Hill, NJ/Cherry Hill West) was 12th in 9:32.61 and sophomore Timothy Betz (Havertown, PA/Haverford) took 13th in a time of 10:09.58.

Blenk was second in the triple jump with a distance of 13.20 meters (43 feet, 3 3/4 inches), and he was third in the long jump with a leap of 6.50 meters (21 feet, four inches). Junior Alan Woods (Mechanicsburg, PA/Cedar Cliff) placed second in the pole vault, clearing 4.27 meters (14 feet) while senior Allan Fatzinger (Catasauqua, PA/Catasauqua) took finished sixth a t 3.81 meters (12 feet, six inches).

Maginnis was fifth in the discus with a toss of 37.95 meters (124 feet, six inches) while junior Justin Starcher (Greentown, PA/Wallenpaupack) was seventh at 34.37 meters (112 feet, nine inches), sophomore Matthew Wisotsky (Bushkill, PA/East Stroudsburg North) placed eighth at 32.27 meters (105 feet, ten inches), freshman Troy Bertholf (Liberty, NY/Liberty) took ninth with a toss of 31.00 meters (100 feet, eight inches) and freshman Zachary Valentine (Tamaqua, PA/Tamaqua) was tenth at 26.23 meters (86 feet, one inch). Valentine placed fifth in the shot put with a toss of 11.66 meters (38 feet, 3 1/4 inches) and was followed by Bertholf in sixth place at 11.46 meters (37 feet, 7 1/4 inches) and Wisotsky in seventh at 10.89 meters (35 feet, 8 3/4 inches). Maginnis also took ninth in the hammer throw with a toss of 41.75 meters (137 feet) while Witosky placed tenth at 34.44 meters (113 feet). Starcher led the Greyhounds in the javelin throw with a toss of 54.98 meters (180 feet, four inches) while Vince Pagano was seventh at 41.27 meters (135 feet, five inches) and Henrie took eighth at 39.53 meters (129 feet, eight inches).

Moravian dropped its inaugural Landmark Conference match, falling to Drew Unviersity, 24-8, in a match at Rocco Calvo Field. The Greyhounds scored first on a goal by junior attack Jason Tosches (); however, the Rangers scored the next six goals and 15 of the next 17 goals to head to the intermission with a 15-3 lead. Drew would extend its lead to 21-3 early in the third quarter before the Greyhounds netted four straight goals to trail 21-7 after 45 minutes. The Rangers had a 49-27 advantage in shots, a 57-42 edge in ground balls and won 25 of 35 face-offs in the match. Senior attack Robert Budziszewski and sophomore attack/midfielder Mike Sayes each had five goals and an assist to lead Drew while sophomore attack Jon Buckham had three goals and four assists for the Rangers. Junior midfielder Jon Dowiak won17 fo 21 face-offs for Drew to go with three assists and four gruond balls while junior midfielder Sean McNulty had a team high nine ground balls to go with two goals for the Rangers. Sophomore goalie Brad Mendelson made nine saves and earned the victory in goal for Drew in 30 minutes of action while junior keeper Michael Celentano had three saves in the second half. Freshman midfielder Robert Devine (Mountain Lakes, NJ/Mountain Lakes) led Moravian with four goals and two assists while Tosches netted two goals. Junior attack Keith Danner (Laurys Station, PA/Parkland) and freshman attack Christopher Mohapp (Jamison, PA/Central Bucks South) each had a goal and an assist for the Greyhounds. Senior defender David Poppe (Simsbury, CT/Simsbury) led Moravian with seven ground balls while freshman goalie Benjamin Leavy (Moorestown, NJ/Moorestown) had 13 saves and a pair of ground balls while dropping to 4-3 on the season. Moravian junior defender Steven Carroll (West Caldwell, NJ/James Caldwell) added five ground balls to reach 100 for his career.

            The Greyhounds dropped their second straight match, the first time this season Moravian has lost two in a row, falling to Susquehanna University, 12-6, in Landmark Conference action at Rocco Calvo Field. The loss also dropped Moravian below the .500 mark for the first time this season. The Greyhounds scored first in the match on an unassisted goal by junior attack Christopher Danni (Macungie, PA/Emmaus) just over three minutes into the contest; however, the Crusaders netted the next three goals to lead 3-1 after the first quarter. Susquehanna also scored the first two goals of the second quarter and added a pair of man-up tallies to lead 7-2 at halftime. The Crusaders were up 8-3 after three quarters before Moravian netted two quick goals in the fourth quarter to pull within 8-5 with 13:29 remaining. Susquehanna ran off the next three goals to rebuild its lead. The Greyhounds held a 39-36 advantage in shots, a 41-40 edge in ground balls and won 16 of 22 face-offs in the match. Freshman attack Robert Devine, who won 13 of 17 face-offs for Moravian, led the Greyhounds with two goals while junior attack Keith Danner had a goal and an assist. Freshman midfielder Trevor Galler (Toms River, NJ/Monsignor Donovan) and junior midfielder Brian Cleaver (Allentown, PA/Parkland) each added goals for Moravian while junior attack Jason Tosches and freshman attack Christopher Mohapp (Jamison, PA/Central Bucks South) each had an assist. Senior defender David Poppe led the Greyhounds with seven ground balls while Devine and junior defender Steven Carroll each added six ground balls. Moravian freshman goalie Benjamin Leavy had 13 saves and five ground balls in the match.

Women’s Track and Field – 0-0 (Landmark Conference 0-0)

The Greyhounds began their 2008 outdoor season with a third place finish of four teams at the Lafayette College ESU 4-Way meet competed at East Stroudsburg University of Pennsylvania. The Leopards were first with 125 points while East Stroudsburg was second with 75, Moravian had 53 points for third and Rider University placed fourth at 47 points. The Greyhounds had a pair of individual champions with sophomore Anna Heim (Moorestown, NJ/Moorestown) capturing the pole vault in an NCAA Division III provisional qualifying height of 3.51 meters (11 feet, 6 1/4 inches) and sophomore Symonne Scott (Attleboro, MA/Attleboro) winning the long jump with a leap of 5.31 meters (17 feet, 5 1/4 inches). Sophomore Flora Robertson (Hawley, PA/East Stroudsburg North) also provisionally qualified for the NCAA Division III National Championships in the hammer throw with a school record toss of 46.80 meters (153 feet, six inches), placing her fifth of 14 competitors as the only Division III thrower in the event.

In the sprint events, sophomore Rachel Beck (Churchville, PA/Council Rock South) placed second in the 100-meter dash in 12.69 seconds while Scott was third at 12.83 seconds. Sophomore Rachel Riggs (Gettysburg, PA/Gettysburg) was seventh for the Greyhounds in 13.46 seconds while freshman Alexandra Lopez (Manasquan, NJ/Manasquan) tied for eighth at 13.56 seconds. Freshman Syndi Wisniewski (Orlando, FL/Winter Park) was the runner-up in the 200-meter dash in 26.40 seconds while Beck was third in 27.07 seconds, Scott was fifth in 27.32 seconds and freshman Alyssa Wert (Orefield, PA/Allentown Central Catholic) placed tenth at 28.81 seconds. Wisniewski also finished second in the 400-meter dash in 59.78 seconds while Wert took seventh in 1:05.99. Freshman Shannon McEvoy (Lafayette, NJ/High Point Regional) took sixth in the 100-meter hurdles in 16.07 seconds while Lopez was ninth in 17.77 seconds. Sophomore Katelyn Chando (Coopersburg, PA/Southern Lehigh) was fourth in the 400-meter hurdles in 1:10.27, and McEvoy was seventh in a time of 1:13.12.

Junior Kayla Teeling (Milford, NJ/Phillipsburg) was second in the 1,500-meter run in a time of 5:01.60 while freshman Tara Chiarella (Hallstead, PA/Montrose Area) was third in 5:10.50 and junior Stephanie Miller (Easton, PA/Easton) placed seventh at 5:23.71. Teeling was also sixth in the 800-meter run in a time of 2:28.43 while freshman Kristen Labert (Coopersburg, PA/Southern Lehigh) was 11th in 2:47.13, freshman Sarah Ziegenfuss (Bangor, PA/Bangor) was 12th at 2:48.57 and junior Naomie Kachel (Shillington, PA/Governor Mifflin) finished 13th in 2:56.60. Senior Katie Pulizzano (Allentown, PA/William Allen) paced Moravian in the 3,000-meter run, placing sixh in a time of 11:33.08. Chiarella was seventh in the 3,000-meters in 11:39.76 while Kachel was 13th in 12:37.71.

In the relay events, the Greyhounds' 4x100-meter relay squad of Beck, Wisniewski, Scott and Riggs placed second in a time of 49.56 seconds while Moravian's 4x400-meter relay team of Beck, Wert, Chando and Wisniewski was fourth in 4:21.15.

Junior Thea Kennerknecht (Central Valley, NY/Monroe-Woodbury) placed fifth in the pole vault, clearing 2.74 meters (eight feet, 11 3/4 inches) while Riggs was sixth in the long jump with a distance of 4.66 meters (15 feet, 3 1/2 inches). Senior Ashlee Scarborough (Warrington, PA/Villa Joseph Marie) was eighth in the long jump t 4.20 meters (13 feet, 9 1/2 inches). Riggs also finished fifth in the triple jump with a distance of 10.33 meters (33 feet, 10 3/4 inches) while McEvoy took seventh at 10.03 meters (32 feet, 11 inches).

Robertson was seventh in the discus with a toss of 25.63 meters (84 feet, one inch), and she was ninth in the shot put with a distance of 9.33 meters (30 feet, 7 1/2 inches). Freshman Molly DuVall (Sewell, NJ/Washington Township) was 11th in the shot put at 8.59 meters (28 feet, 2 1/4 inches). Freshman Kaleen Holden () placed third in the javelin throw for the Greyhounds with a toss of 34.85 meters (114 feet, four inches) while sophomore Aliina Ross (Paoli, PA/Conestoga) was fifth at 32.66 meters (107 feet, two inches) and Robertson placed sixth at 31.82 meters (104 feet, five inches).

Women’s Lacrosse – 4-2 (Landmark Conference 0-0)

Last Week – Defeated Wilkes University 18-15.

This Week – Mon., Mar. 31st at Arcadia University, 4:00 p.m.

 

Moravian used a three-goal outburst midway through the second half to snap a tie game on its way to an 18-15 non-conference victory at Wilkes University. The victory improved the Greyhounds to 4-2 overall and established a new school record for wins in a season in the sixth year of the varisty program. It also marked the first time in school history that Moravian is two games over .500.

Moravian scored the first five goals of the game, including three by sophomore attack Jillian Pagliei (Ivyland, PA/Council Rock North), to take the lead.  Wilkes would rally and cut the deficit to 9-6 at halftime. The Lady Colonels would out-score the Greyhounds 5-2 to begin the second half to pull even at 11-11 with 19:34 remaining in the contest. Moravian would then rattle off three straight tallies to take the lead for good.  Sophomore midfielder Lynda Kauffman (Boothwyn, PA/Chichester), Pagliei and senior midfielder Erica Spatz (Pennsauken, NJ/Pennsauken) scored the goals, and the Greyhounds had a 14-11 advantage with 14:21 left. 

Wilkes cut the lead to a single goal on two occasions, including 15-14 with 4:06 left.  But, Spatz scored two straight goals and freshman midfielder Maureen Helfers (Westbury, NY/W.T. Clarke) added a score to up the Moravian lead to 18-14 with 1:33 left and put the game out of reach. The Greyhounds held a 33-31 shots advantage and a 26-17 edge in ground balls while the Lady Colonels had an 18-17 edge in draw controls.  Moravian sophomore goalkeeper Courtney Rosenberg (Cape May, NJ/Lower Cape May Regional) picked up the win by stopping 12 shots and adding two ground balls.  Wilkes goalie Stacy Fimmano ended the day with 10 saves and two ground balls.

Spatz had six goals and one assist to lead the Moravian attack.  Pagliei contributed five goals and one assist, while Kauffman had four goals.  Helfers, sophomore attack Paige Warbrick (Souderton, PA/Souderton Area) and junior attack Georgia Castellano (Cherry Hills, NJ/Cherry Hill West) had one goal apiece.  Spatz also had nine draw controls to break her own school record for a single match, and the nine draws pushed Spatz's career total to 119, a new Moravian career record. Sophomore defender Katie Wise (Ardsley, PA/Abington) paced the Greyhounds with six ground balls, three caused turnovers and three draw controls while Kauffman and Warbick each had three ground balls.

Moravian had its four-game winning streak snapped in a 14-3 loss to Montclair State University in non-conference action at Yogi Berra Stadium.  Montclair jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the first inning as Michael Nunes led off with a single and Lou Politan followed with a walk. After a fly out moved Nunes to third, senior catcher Jeff Miller delivered an RBI single for the first run of the game.  Bowness would extend the lead with a two-out single that brought home both Politan and Miller. Bowness provided the final run of the opening inning as he went from first to third on a wild pitch and came home as the throw to third skipped away giving Montclair the 4-0 lead.

The Red Hawks added six more in the second. Andrew Himmelfarb walked to lead off and went to second on a single by Nunes, his second hit of the game. Politan drove home Himmelfarb with a base hit and Stephen Piscitello followed with an RBI single as Montclair went up 6-0. Ed Kloepping walked with the bases loaded for the seventh run and Vicente Medina added an RBI single as Montclair increased its lead to 8-0. Bowness would collect his third RBI on a fielder’s choice and later scored on a wild pitch to cap the six-run innings for the Red Hawks.

Bowness capped his day with an RBI triple in the fourth and Kevin Cuozzi made it 12-0 on a groundout. Bionde finished MSU’s second-highest run total this season with a two-run single in the sixth. Bowness had two hits and four RBIs while Miller and Nunes each had two hits for the Red Hawks, who outhit the Greyhounds, 11-10. 

Moravian would get itself on the scoreboard with its three runs in the top of the ninth inning. Freshman third baseman Jake Schweitzer led off the inning with a single and advanced to second on a wild pitch. Senior second baseman Brett Stout (Easton, PA/Easton) singled home Schweitzer with an RBI single through the left side. Freshman outfielder Kirk Pastre and freshman shortstop Jason Huber (Bethlehem, PA/Liberty) drew walks for Moravian to lead the bases before junior outfielder Josh Hinkle hit a two-RBI single to right field. The Greyhounds had 11 hits in the game with Hinkle, Stout and junior first baseman Joseph Durso (Middletown, NJ/Christian Brother Academy) each had two hits.

Sophomore Dustin Pflug (Clark, NJ/Arthur L. Johnson) suffered the loss for Moravian, allowing ten runs on six hits and five walks with one strikeout in 1 2/3 innings of action. Sophomore Andrew DeLio (Parsippany, NJ/Parsippany) tossed 3 1/3 innings for the Greyhounds, giving up two runs on three hits with two strikeouts while freshman Luke Skutches (Bethlehem, PA/Bethlehem Catholic) saw his first action of the season for Moravian, allowing two runs on two hits and three walks with a pair of strikeouts in two innings of work. Sophomore Richard Schultz (Drexel Hill, PA/The Haverford School) pitched the final inning for Moravian with a walk and a strikeout.

            The Greyhounds dropped their second straight non-conference game, falling to Haverford College, 5-4. The Fords jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the first innnig when Dean Laganosky singled to lead off, moved to second on a wild pitch and scored on a Moravian throwing error on an bunt single by Jamie Hollowell.

Haverford would plate a run in the bottom of the second inning on a solo home run by Jeff Lichtstein to build a 2-0 lead. Robbie Crabtree connected on a two-out solo home run in the third inning to give the Fords a 3-0 advantage. Haverford extended its lead to 5-0 in the bottom of the fourth inning with two runs on an RBI sacrifice fly by Steve Andelman that scored Jeff Rickert and Laganosky scoring on a wild pitch.

Moravian would get on the scoreboard with a run in the top of the fifth inning to cut the Fords lead to 5-1. Freshman third baseman Jason Huber drew a walk to lead off the inning. Huber would be out on a fielder's choice by junior outfielder Josh Hinkle (Allentown, PA/Allentown Central Catholic) but a Haverford error on the plate put Hinkle on second base. After Hinkle moved to third on a wild pitch, he scored on an RBI ground out by junior outfielder Thomas Czarnecki (Columbia, NJ/North Warren).

The Greyhounds added three runs in the top of the seventh inning to pull within a run at 5-4. Freshman outfielder Kirk Pastre (San Marino, CA/San Marino), doubled and moved to third on a fly out by senior second baseman Brett Stout. Huber hit an infield RBI single to score Pastre. Hinkle also reached on an infield single to put runners on first and second. Huber and Hinkle pulled off a double steal with Huber scoring on a Haverford throwing error that also put Hinkle on third base. Czarnecki then delivered his second RBI ground out of the game to score Hinkle.

Moravian had 12 hits in the game with Hinkle going three-for-five and Huber, junior first baseman Joseph Durso and junior catcher Michael LaVerghetta (Center Valley, PA/Southern Lehigh) each going two-for-four. The Fords had eight hits in the game with Laganosky collecting three hits.

Senior Matthew Swartz (Dunmore, PA/Dunmore) took the loss on the mound for the Greyhounds, allowing three runs on six hits and two walks in three innings of action. Sophomore Philip Spence (Lafayette, NJ/Newton) also tossed three innings for Moravian, giving up two unearned runs on a hit with five strikeouts. Freshman Jake Schweitzer (Bethlehem, PA/Bethlehem Catholic HS) was on the mound for the final two innings and allowed just one hit while striking out two batters.

            Moravian lost the first game of a Landmark Conference doubleheader at The University of Scranton, falling to the Royals, 13-2, as the Greyhounds dropped their third straight game. Moravian would had a 1-0 lead in the contest after scoring in the top of the second inning. Sophomore outfielder Brad Bodine (Mt. Bethel, PA/Bangor) doubled with two outs and after moving to third base on a Royal error on a ball hit by junior catcher Michael LaVerghetta, Bodine scored on an RBI double by senior second baseman Brett Stout.

Scranton would take a 3-1 lead with three runs in the bottom of the fourth inning. Jeff Manahan hit a two-RBI double and would score on an RBI single by Steve Melly. The Royals added eight more run in the bottom of the fifth inning to extend their lead to 11-1. Kevin Johnson had an RBI double while Richard Raiani had a two RBI single in the inning. Chris Bligh had a pair of hits in the fifth for Scranton including a two RBI double.

Moravian would tally its other run of the game in the top of the sixth inning. Junior shortstop Kevin Gambrino (Brick, NJ/Monsignor Donovan) was hit by a pitch to start the inning, and he moved to second base on a single by Bodine. The pair would move into scoring position on a wild pitch before Gambrino scored on a Scranton error.

The Royals added two more runs in the bottom of the sixth inning to set the final score. Scranton had 13 hits in the game with Johnson going three-for-four. Bligh, Melly and Charles Comprelli each had two hits for the Royals. Moravian had seven hits in the contest with two each by Bodine and junior outfielder Eric Shea (Madison, NJ/Morristown Beard).

Sophomore Joe Melchionna (Marlboro, NJ/St. John Vianney) suffered his second loss of the season on the mound for the Greyhounds, allowing six runs on eight hits and two walks while striking out two batters in 4 1/3 innings of action. Sophomore Zachary Andes (Moscow, PA/North Pocono) faced two batters in the game for Moravian, hitting one with a pitch and allowing a base hit for two runs while junior Thomas Murray (Staten Island, NY/Moore Catholic) tossed 2/3 of an inning allowing three runs on two hits and one walk with one strikeout. Sophomore Richard Schultz pitched the final inning for the Greyhounds, allowing a pair of unearned runs on two hits and walk with one strikeout.

            The Greyhounds were swept in a Landmark Conference doubleheader, falling to The University of Scranton, 12-5, as Moravian dropped a season high fourth straight contest. The Royals jumped out to an 8-0 lead in the bottom of the second inning. Steve Melley drove in two runs during the inning for Scranton with a two-RBI single while Chris Stallone had an RBI sacrifice fly and Chris Bligh was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded. Justin Champagne drew a bases loaded walk while the final three runs scored on a Greyhound error.

Moravian would score a run in the top of the third inning. Senior second baseman Brett Stout led off the inning with a double and moved to second on a ground out by junior outfielder Eric Shea. Freshman third baseman Jason Huber then hit an RBI sacrifice fly to score Stout.

Scranton would add three more runs in the bottom half of the third inning to extend its lead to 11-1. Chris Psihoules had a two-RBI triple while Bligh delivered an RBI sacrifice fly for the Royals. Scranton pushed its final run of the game across the plate in the bottom of the fourth inning when Kevin Johnson scored on a RBI fielder's choice by Melly for a 12-1 lead.

The Greyhounds scored twice in the top of the sixth inning to cut the Royal lead to 12-3. Freshman third baseman Jacob Millen (Whitehall, PA/Whitehall) led off the inning with a double and scored on a bases loaded walk by junior outfielder Thomas Czarnecki. Junior shortstop Kevin Gambrino then hit an RBI sacrifice fly to score freshman outfielder Kirk Pastre, who had walked earlier in the inning.

Moravian would push two more runs across the plate in the top of the seventh inning. Millen singled with two outs and Pastre followed with another walk. Junior first baseman Joseph Durso also drew a walk to load the bases before a two-RBI single from Czarnecki. The Greyhounds had five hits in the game with two by Millen. Scranton had just seven hits in the game with two by Stallone.

Sophomore Christopher Morrison (Middlesex, NJ/Immaculata) took the loss on the mound for Moravian, allowing seven runs, five of them earned, on three hits and seven walks in 1 1/3 innings. Sophomore Brandon Palmisano (Mountainhome, PA/Pius X) tossed 2 2/3 innings, allowing five runs, four of them earned, on four hits and two walks with two strikeouts for the Greyhounds while freshman Luke Skutches pitched the final two innings, giving up four walks while striking out two batters.

            Moravian suffered its season high fifth straight loss, falling to The University of Scranton, 8-4, in the final game of a Landmark Conference series. Junior outfielder Eric Shea gave the Greyhounds a quick 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning with a leadoff home run, his first of the season. Junior outfielder Josh Hinkle would reach on an error with one out for Moravian and moved to second on an infield single by junior first baseman Joseph Durso. Junior designated hitter Thomas Czarnecki followed with an RBI single to score Hinkle to give the Greyhounds a 2-0 lead.

Moravian added two more runs in the top of the seventh inning to build a 4-0 lead. Freshman shortstop Jason Huber drew a walk to lead off an inning before Hinkle reached on another Scranton error. Durso followed with an RBI single to center field to score Huber and move Hinkle to third. Czarnecki then hit into an RBI fielder's choice to score Hinkle.

Scranton would rally for eight runs in the bottom of the eighth inning for the victory. Chris Bligh started the scoring with an RBI double while Justin Champagne followed with an RBI single. David Giglio connected on an RBI double for the Royals and then Kevin Johnson had an RBI sacrifice fly. After a run scored on a Moravian error, Charles Comprelli connected on a three-run homer to cap off the scoring.

The Royals had 14 hits in the game with Comprelli and Champagne each collecting three hits. Chris Psihoules, Chris Stallone and Steve Melly each had two hits for Scranton. Moravian did have 13 hits of its own in the game with Durso and freshman third baseman Jake Schweitzer each collecting three hits. Shea and Czarnecki had two hits apiece.

Senior Trevor Lawrence (Lansford, PA/Marian Catholic) pitched seven-plus innings for the Greyhounds, allowing three runs on nine hits and three walks while striking out five batters. Senior Matthew Swartz took the loss for Moravian, giving up two hits and two earned runs while facing two batters in the eighth inning. Sophomore Andrew DeLio finished off the game for the Greyhounds, allowing three runs on three hits with two strikeouts in an inning of work.

            Moravian opened a non-conference doubleheader at Elizabethtown College with a 3-0 victory. The Greyhounds jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the top of the third inning when freshman outfielder Amanda Paulus (Easton, PA/Easton) singled to right field with one out. Paulus would steal second before scoring on an RBI double to left field by junior outfielder Erica Kelpeisz (Nazareth, PA/Nazareth).

The Greyhounds would add a pair of insurance runs in the top of the sixth inning. Freshman shortstop Stephanie Falzarano (South Plainfield, NJ/South Plainfield) reached on an error to lead off the inning and then scored on an RBI triple to right field by Kelpeisz. After a ground out, Klepeisz would cross the plate on an RBI single through the left side by freshman first baseman Jennifer Schmitt (Mendham, NJ/Mendham). Moravian had eight hits in the game with Klepeisz going two-for-two and Paulus going two-for-three.

The Blue Jays had five hits in the game with two off of the bat of Kelsea Corrado. Elizabethtown had a chance to score at the end of the game but Klepeisz threw out the runner at the plate to end the game.

Moravian junior pitcher Maria DeBonis (Nazareth, PA/Notre Dame) tossed the five-hitter and allowed just one walk while striking out 11 batters for her fourth victory of the season in the circle. The shutout was DeBonis' third of the season.

            The Greyhounds swept a non-conference doubleheader from former conference foe Elizabethtown College with a 6-0 victory in the second game. Moravian freshman pitcher Elizabeth Python (Huntington Station, NY/Walt Whitman) tossed her second straight shutout, allowing just two hits and striking out three batters to improve to 5-2 in the circle this season.

Moravian would give Python all of the offense she needed before Python even hit the circle as the Greyhounds scored a pair of runs in the top of the first inning. Freshman outfielder Stephanie Falzarano led off the game with a double to left centerfield, and junior Erica Klepeisz followed with a single through the right side to put runners on the corners. Klepeisz would then steal second base and a throwing error would move her to third and allow Falzarano to score. Senior shortstop Beth Paly (Whitehall, PA/Whitehall) then hit an RBI double down the left field line to score Klepeisz.

The Greyhounds added a run in the top of the second inning for a 3-0 lead. Senior designated player Megan Ritchey (Boyertown, PA/Boyertown) started the inning with a single up the middle, and she moved to second on a wild pitch. Two batters later, junior second baseman Katie Agnew (Doylestown, PA/Lansdale Catholic) hit an RBI double to right center to score Ritchey.

Moravian pushed another run across the plate in the top of the third inning to build a 4-0 lead. Paly led off the inning with a single to left centerfield, and she moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by senior third baseman Kelly Santry (Hatboro, PA/Upper Moreland). A single to right center by freshman outfielder Amanda Paulus put runners on the corners before an RBI single to center field by freshman first baseman Jennifer Schmitt.

The Greyhounds scored their final two runs in the top of the sixth inning. Agnew reached on an error with one out and scored on an RBI triple to centerfield by Klepeisz. Paly followed with an RBI single up the middle to push Klepeisz home. Moravian had 13 hits in the game and was led by Paly's three-for-four performance. Agnew and Klepeisz were each two-for-four in Moravian's third straight victory.

            Moravian's non-conference home doubleheader versus The College of New Jersey for Thursday, March 27th has been postponed due to inclement weather that is expected to arrive before game time. The doubleheader has not been rescheduled at this time.

            The Greyhounds opened their inaugural Landmark Conference season with an 8-0, six-inning victory at The United States Merchant Marine Academy in the first game of a Landmark Conference doubleheader. Moravian junior pitcher Maria DeBonis tossed her fourth shutout of the season, allowing just one hit and one walk while striking out 11 batters in the win.

The Greyhounds would give DeBonis all of the offense she needed in the top of the second inning when they pushed three runs across the plate. Senior second baseman Kelly Santry led off the inning with an infield single and moved to second on a Mariner error. DeBonis then gave herself the lead with an RBI double. Senior outfielder Megan Ritchey followed with an RBI infield single to score DeBonis, and Ritchey would cross the plate with the final run of the inning on an RBI single by freshman outfielder Amanda Paulus.

Moravian added two more runs to its lead in the top of the third inning for a 5-0 lead. Senior shortstop Beth Paly led off the inning with a single, and junior first baseman Sheri Bieniek (Lumberton, NJ/Rancocas Valley) followed with single through the right side. A ground out by Santry would put both Paly and Bieniek in scoring position for DeBonis' two-RBI double to left centerfield.

The Greyhounds scored three times in the top of the sixth inning for an 8-0 lead and held U.S. Merchant Marine scoreless in the bottom half of the inning to end the contest with the NCAA eight-run rule. In the sixth inning, junior catcher Deanna Mangieri reached on error and was pinch run for by sophomore Katie Flood (Branchburg, NJ/Somerville). After an out, freshman third baseman Maura Agnew hit a single to set up an RBI single by junior outfielder Erica Klepeisz that scored Flood. After a wild pitch moved Agnew and Kelpeisz into scoring position, Paly delivered a two-RBI single.

Moravian had ten hits in the victory with DeBonis going two-for-three with two doubles and three RBIs and Paly going two-for-four with a pair of RBIs.

The win was the Greyhounds' fifth straight, all by shutout, and the team's eight shutout of the season in 11 wins. Freshman pitcher Elizabeth Python tossed her second straight shutout for Moravian, allowing just three hits and striking out three batters.

The Greyhounds would give Python all of the offense she needed in the top of the third inning when freshman outfielder Amanda Paulus connected on a solo home run to left field to put Moravian up 1-0. The homer was Paulus' second of the season.

Moravian would add three unearned runs in the top of the sixth inning. Senior second baseman Beth Paly hit a one-out double and junior first baseman Sheri Bieniek drew walk. Junior Katie Agnew came into pinch run for Paly while sophomore Katie Flood ran for Bieniek. The pair would pull off a double steal to move into scoring position. Agnew and Flood would come across the plate on a dropped fly ball off of the bat of junior designated player Maria DeBonis. DeBonis would come home with the final run of the game after an error in the outfield on a single by junior catcher Deanna Mangieri (Pleasantville, NY/Byram Hills).

The Greyhounds had just four hits in the game with two off of Paly's bat while the Mariners had three hits with two by Kaitlyn Robbins.

            Moravian's non-conference home doubleheader versus Franklin & Marshall College for Sunday, March 30th has been postponed . The doubleheader has been rescheduled for Thursday, April 17th at 3:30 p.m. at Blue & Grey Field in Bethlehem.

            Moravian won its first Landmark Conference match of the season, and its second straight match overall with a 7-2 victory over Susquehanna University at Hoffman Courts. The match was Moravian's first at Hoffman Courts this season. The Greyhounds led the contest, 3-0, after doubles action with victories by the tandems of sophomore Ian Box (Charlestown, MA/The Rivers School) and junior Keith Feinman (Haddonfield, NJ/Haddonfield), sophomore Chandler Forman (Plymouth, MA/Plymouth) and freshman Thomas Turcich (Haddon Township, NJ/Haddon Township) and sophomore Jason Bonilla (Whitestone, NY/Bayside) and freshman Matthew Share (Langhorne, PA/Neshaminy). Box, Bonilla and Forman each had straight sets win in singles action for the Greyhounds while Turcich earned a three-set win for Moravian.

            The Greyhounds won their third straight match overall and improved to 2-1 in Landmark Conference action with a 9-0 sweep at the United States Merchant Marine Academy. Moravian led after winning all three doubles matches with victories by the teams of sophomore Ian Box and junior Keith Feinman, sophomore Chandler Forman and freshman Thomas Turcich and sophomore Jason Bonilla and freshman Matthew Share. All six players would also earn straight sets singles wins for the Greyhounds.

The Greyhounds won their third straight match and remained undefeated in Landmark Conference action with a 9-0 win over Susquehanna University at Hoffman Courts, Moravian's first home match of the spring season. The win was also the Greyhounds' first at home in five matches this season. Moravian led 3-0 after doubles action with victories by the teams of senior Lindsey Hopper (Middlesex, NJ/Middlesex) and junior Dyana Swan (Branchburg, NJ/Somerville), seniors Brittany Popaca (Lavallette, NJ/Point Pleasant Beach) and Jennel Yelito (Tamaqua, PA/Tamaqua) and junior MaryKate Kelly (Beach Haven, NJ/Southern Regional) and freshman Kerry McKinley (Sparta, NJ/Pope John XXIII). In single action, the Greyhounds had six straight sets wins with victories by Hopper, Swan, Popaca, Yelito, McKinley and senior Rebecca Angstadt (Hamburg, PA/Hamburg).
