Women’s Soccer – 15-5-1 (Landmark Conference 5-1)

Last Week – Defeated The Catholic University of America in Landmark Conference Semifinals, 2-0; Lost to The University of Scranton in Landmark Conference Championship, 4-2.

This Week – Sat., Nov. 10th at Hamilton (NY) College in NCAA Division III National Championship Tournament First Round, 11:00 p.m.; Sun., Nov. 11th in NCAA Division III National Championship Tournament Second Round (if qualify), 1:00 p.m.

The second-seeded Greyhounds earned a berth in the first-ever Landmark Conference Tournament Championship match with a 2-0 shutout of third seed The Catholic University of America in a semifinal contest on the HUB Quad. Moravian junior goalie Caitlin Corrigan (Perkasie, PA/Pennridge HS) made four saves, all in the second half, for her 11th shutout of the season, extending her school career mark with her 26th career shutout. The Greyhounds would give Corrigan all of the offense she needed in the eighth minute when senior midfielder Jill Newswanger (Pine Grove, PA/Pine Grove HS) tapped in a corner kick by senior midfielder Allison Solomita (Chatham, NJ/Chatham HS) for Newswanger's third goal of the season. Solomita took the kick from the left corner while Newswanger hit the shot in on the back right side of the net. Moravian would add a second goal in the first half when senior forward Tracy Fitzpatrick (Wantage, NJ/High Point Regional HS) netted her team leading 13th goal of the season on a penalty kick. The Cardinals finished the match with a 10-9 advantage in shots while the Greyhounds had a 5-4 edge in corner kicks. Both teams each had a shot the either hit the cross bar or the post during the contest.

Second seeded Moravian fell to top seed The University of Scranton, 4-2, in the 2007 Landmark Conference Championship match. Scranton needed just two minutes to take a 1-0 lead in the inaugural Landmark Conference Championship match. The Royals then extended the lead to 2-0 in the 17th minute. Moravian would cut the score in half in the 48th minute when Greyhound sophomore forward Alessandra Valdetara (Butler, NJ/Butler HS) netted her fifth goal of the season off of an assist from Solomita. Scranton would build a 4-1 lead with a pair of goals in a five-minute span in the 54th and 59th minutes. Moravian finished off the scoring in the 79th minute when Fitzpatrick netted her 14th goal of the season on a penalty kick, the second straight match Fitzpatrick had scored on a penalty kick. The Greyhounds dominated the offensive statistics in the match, holding a 21-10 advantage in shots and a 10-4 edge in corner kicks. Corrigan had three saves while giving up four goals for just the second time in her career. The other time was the 2005 Commonwealth Conference Championship match in a 4-0 loss to eventual NCAA Division III National Champion Messiah College.

Junior midfielder Tracy Fitzpatrick (Wantage, NJ/High Point Regional HS) of the Moravian College women’s soccer team has been named the Landmark Conference Women’s Soccer Offensive Player of the year, and earned First Team All-Conference honors along with junior goalie Caitlin Corrigan (Perkasie, PA/Pennridge HS) and sophomore forward Alessandra Valdetara (Butler, NJ/Butler HS) announced last Tuesday.  Senior defender Robyn Klem (Allentown, PA/Allentown Central Catholic HS) and sophomore defender Terri Roberts (Danville, PA/Danville HS) each earned spots on the Landmark All-Conference Second Team.  The quintet has led Moravian to a 14-4-1 record this season and the second seed in the 2007 Landmark Conference Tournament that begins on Wednesday.  The Greyhounds will host third seed The Catholic University of America at 3:00 p.m. on the HUB Quad.

Fitzpatrick leads the 2007 Greyhounds in scoring with 12 goals and five assists for 29 points including six game-winning goals. Fitzpatrick missed the entire 2006 season due to an injury and is tied for fifth in school history in scoring with 53 points.  Corrigan, who also has an assist this season, has posted a 0.59 goals-against average with 69 saves, a 14-4-1 record and ten shutouts in 1,666 minutes.  Corrigan, who was the first-ever Landmark Conference Defensive Player of the Week and has won the award four times this season including this week, has set the school record with 25 career shutouts.

Valdetara has contributed four goals and five assists for 13 points with one game-winning goal this fall.  Klem has started in 14 matches this season, missing five due to injury.  She is just one of three players that has not scored a point for the Greyhounds this season, but she has helped the team post ten shutouts.  Roberts has two game-winning goals and an assist for five points.  One of her game-winning goals came in overtime in a 2-1 victory over King’s on a shot from at least 35-yards away from the goal.
