Moravian opened the 2007-08 season
with a 74-69 loss to Colby-Sawyer College in the first game of the 24th Annual
Emmanuel College Tip-Off Tournament in Boston.
The Greyhounds fell behind 14-4 just over five minutes into the game
before rallying to tie the contest at 17-17 with 8:03 remaining in the first
half. Moravian went on to take a 22-17 lead with 5:25 left before halftime;
however, Colby-Sawyer hit a three-pointer just ten seconds before the half to
send the two teams to the locker room tied at 31-31. Moravian was ten of 32
from the floor (31.3 percent) in the first 20 minutes, two of seven behind the
three-point line and nine of ten at the foul line. The Chargers ran out to an
early four-point lead in the second half but Moravian responded to go up 38-37.
The game remained close for most of the half until Colby-Sawyer pulled ahead,
68-60 with 2:52 remaining. The Greyhounds would eventually pull within one
point, 70-69, with just nine seconds remaining when freshman guard/forward Emily Smith (East Stroudsburg, PA/East
Stroudsburg South HS) made one of two free throws. The Chargers scored the
game's final four points at the foul line in the final seven seconds. The Greyhounds shooting improved in the second
half, making 14 of 33 field goal attempts (42.4 percent), four of eight
three-pointers and six of nine free throws. Moravian had just 15 turnovers. The Greyhounds had four players in double
figures in the contest sophomores guard Amanda
Brown (Schuylkill Haven, PA/Schuylkill Haven HS) and forwards Alyssa Bisci (Easton, PA/Easton HS) and
Kirsty Stearns (East Norwich, NY/Oyster Bay HS)
all netting 12 points. Brown had two
assists while Bisci contributed six
rebounds, two assist and two steals. Stearns
grabbed a game high nine rebounds. Smith
had 11 points, five rebounds, two assists and two steals in her first
collegiate contest while sophomore forward Lauren
Fornazor (Riverdale, NJ/Pascack
Valley HS) and senior guard LaToya Blake
(Allentown, PA/Dieruff HS) each netted seven
points. Fornazor
added three rebounds while Blake had
a game high six steals to go along with four rebounds
and two assists. Sophomore guard Kate
Harrison (Cold Spring Harbor, NY/Cold Spring Harbor HS) scored six points
for the Greyhounds with three assists and three rebounds while sophomore
starting guard Jessica Foran (Annandale, NJ/Rutgers Prep HS) had two points
before an injury forced her out of the game just six minutes into the contest.
Moravian earned its first win of the season, defeating
Smith College, 56-41, in the Consolation game of the 24th Annual Emmanuel
College Tip-Off Tournament in Boston. The
teams were tied at 6-6 with just over 14 minutes remaining in the first half
when Moravian went 7-0 run to take control of the game
and a 13-6 lead with 10:26 left before halftime. The Greyhounds would go to the
locker room with a 22-14 lead after leading by as many as ten points during the
half. Moravian connected on ten of 37 field goal attempts (27.0 percent), one
of seven three-pointers and one of two free throws. The Greyhounds would
maintain a double-digit lead for most of the season half, pushing the lead to
as much as 21 points at 56-35 with 1:13 remaining in the game. Moravian made 11
of 29 field goal attempts (37.9 percent) in the second half to go along with
two of eight three-pointers and ten of 15 free throws. The Greyhounds forced
Smith into 35 turnovers while only turning the ball over 18 times. Moravian had two players in double figures led
by Smith, who had 15 points and six
rebounds. Stearns contributed 12
points, seven rebounds and two blocked shots for the Greyhounds while Blake added seven points, three
rebounds and four steals. Stearns was named to the All-Tournament
Team. Brown netted six points to go with five
steals and three assists for Moravian while sophomore guard Alexis DiFazio
(East Hanover, NJ/Hanover Park HS) and freshman guard Jennie Miller (Lewisburg, PA/Lewisburg HS) each had five points. DiFazio added
four rebounds while Miller had three
rebounds and three steals. Harrison had four points and four
boards for the Greyhounds while Fornazor had two
points and a career high six rebounds in her first collegiate start. Moravian
played the contest without Foran and Bisci, who were both injured in the
season opener.

Men’s Basketball – 1-1 (Landmark

Moravian opened the 2007-08 season
with an 82-73 victory over host Emmanuel College in the first round of the 7th
Annual Emmanuel College Tip-Off Tournament in Boston. Moravian and Emmanuel traded the lead in the
first half with neither team able to pull away. The Greyhounds' largest lead
was six points, 30-24, with 5:29 remaining in the half while the Saints had a
four-point lead, 15-11, at the 12:08 mark. Moravian shot nine of 27 (33.3
percent) from the floor in the first 20 minutes of the contest including four
of seven (57.1 percent) behind the three-point line and 16 of 17 (94.1 percent)
from the foul line. The Saints went on a
run to start the second half and eventually led by 16 points, 61-45 with 14:04
left to play in the game. The Greyhounds responded with a 25-2 run to take a
70-63 lead with just 2:52 remaining in the second half. Moravian would put the
game away at the foul line including making seven of eight free throws in the
final 46 seconds of the game. The
Greyhounds improved their shooting from the field in the second half, making
eight of 22 field goal attempts (36.4 percent), four of seven three-pointers
and 25 of 30 free throws. Moravian also had a 42-34 advantage in rebounds while
both teams committed 18 turnovers. The
Greyhounds had five players in double figures led by senior forward Mark Franzyshen
(Somerset, NJ/Immaculata HS), who had 17 points to
go with a game high 14 rebounds and two steals. Senior forward Steve Wenderfer
(Chester, NJ/Mendham HS) contributed 15 points and five rebounds off the
bench, and both Franzyshen
and Wenderfer
were each 13 of 14 at the foul line in the game. Senior guard Ryan Miller (Easton, PA/Easton HS) netted 14 points for the
Greyhounds to go with three rebounds while senior forward Chris Earley (Brielle, NJ/Manasquan HS) and
Eric Whitman (Blairstown, NJ/Notre Dame
East Stroudsburg {PA} HS) each tossed in 12 points for Moravian. Earley added
three rebounds, two assists and two blocked shots while Whitman had two rebounds and two steals. Sophomore forward Eric Weaver (Succasunna, NJ/Roxbury HS)
and freshman guard Maurice Young
(Philadelphia, PA/Chestnut Hill Academy) each had five points for the
Greyhounds with Young adding three
rebounds, three steals and two assists in his first collegiate game. Senior guard Chris Bays (Hackettstown, NJ/Pope John XXIII HS) netted two points
while freshman forward Steve Siracusa (New Providence, NJ/New Providence HS) had
three rebounds in his first college action.
Moravian
dropped their first game of the season, falling to Western Connecticut State
University, 75-63, in the championship game of the 7th Annual Emmanuel College
Tip-Off Tournament in Boston. Moravian
opened an early 8-4 lead with 17:13 remaining in the first half on a lay-up by Franzyshen,
however; the Colonials went on a 16-2 run to open a 20-10 lead with 11:32 to go
in the first half. Western Connecticut would lead by as many as 11 points
during the first 20 minutes, but the Greyhounds would cut the lead to three
points, 37-34, on a lay-up by freshman forward Chris Cullen (East Islip, NY/East Islip HS) with just 36 seconds
remaining in the first half. The
Colonials headed to the locker room with a 39-24 lead. Moravian made 13 of 38
field half field goals (34.2 percent), four of ten three-pointers and four of
eight free throws. Western Connecticut
would push its lead to double digits again early in the second half before
another Moravian run made the game close again. Weaver hit a jumper in the lane to pull the Greyhounds within two
points, 58-56, with 7:54 remaining in the contest but Moravian would only score
seven more points in the game. The Colonials finished the game on a 17-7 run
for the victory. The Greyhounds were six
of 29 from the floor (20.7 percent), one of eight on three-pointers and 16 of
25 at the foul line. Moravian had just 15 turnovers while forcing Western
Connecticut into 22 turnovers. The
Greyhounds had three players in double figures with Franzyshen and Earley each netting 19 points, a career high
for Earley.
The duo was named to the All-Tournament Team with Franzyshen having his second
double-double of the season with ten rebounds. Earley added six rebounds and
three steals. Miller netted 11 points for Moravian to go along with four rebounds
while Whitman and Cullen each had six points. Whitman added five rebounds and four
steals. Weaver had two points and three rebounds in the game for the Greyhounds
while Young added three rebounds and
three assists. Wenderfer was injured early in the game for
Moravian and played just seven minutes.

Football – 6-4 (Centennial Conference 4-4)
Moravian had 11 players named to the 2007 All-Centennial
Conference Football Teams with junior quarterback Marc Braxmeier (Center Valley, PA/Allentown Central Catholic HS)
and senior offensive lineman Eric Adams
(Dover, NJ/Dover HS) earning first team honors.
The Greyhounds had seven All-Centennial Conference Second
Team honorees with senior wide receiver Sean
Hill (West Reading, PA/Wyomissing HS), senior tight end Kris Bisci (Easton, PA/Easton HS) and
senior offensive linemen Dave Kircher
(Manasquan, NJ/Manasquan HS) and Jeff
Kocsis (Bethlehem, PA/Bethlehem Catholic HS) making the offensive squad and
juniors linebacker Andrew Morrissey
(Emmaus, PA/Emmaus HS) and defensive linemen Douglas Bocchino (Madison, NJ/Madison HS)
and Don Maxwell (Berkeley Heights,
NJ/Governor Livingston HS) on the defensive squad. Junior kicker Brian Reckenbeil (Branchburg, NJ/Somerville HS), junior fullback Morgan deRouen
(West Milford, NJ/West Milford HS) and junior defensive back Carl Robinson (Boothwyn, PA/Garnet Valley
HS) each earned All-Centennial Conference Honorable Mention.
Moravian posted a 6-4 overall record in its first year as
a member of the Centennial Conference with a 45-4 mark in conference
action. The Greyhounds finished tied for
tied for fifth in the conference standings and were fourth in the preseason
poll.
Braxmeier had
a breakout season in his first full year as the Greyhounds’ starter, completing
129 of 236 passes for 1,948 yards with 17 touchdowns and ten interceptions in
nine games. His 17 touchdown passes are
the second most in a single season in the Moravian record books while his 1,948
yards ranks fifth in the single season record books. Braxmeier
threw four touchdown passes in the 34-27 season opening win at Susquehanna
University and in a 44-41 win at Johns Hopkins University tying the school
record for touchdown passes in a game. Braxmeier also had four rushing
touchdowns this season.
Adams, Kircher and Kocsis helped the Moravian offense average 344.7 yards of offense
per game this season including 143.3 yards per game on the ground. The trio also helped the Greyhounds control
the ball for an average of 31:06 each game while scoring 29 offensive
touchdowns, 12 rushing and 17 passing. Kocsis has now earned All-Conference
honors for three straight years in three different conferences. He was a second
team All-Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference East selection in 2005 as a
member of the East Stroudsburg University of Pennsylvania team, and Kocsis was on the All-Middle Atlantic
Conference Second Team last year in his first season at Moravian.
Hill, in just
his second season as a wide receiver, caught a team high 32 passes for 606
yards and eight touchdowns. Hill’s yardage total ranks ninth in single
season history at Moravian and is just the second receiver in the last 13 years
to go over 600 yards receiving in a season.
His eight touchdowns are tied for the third most in a season in the
Greyhound record books.
Bisci caught
19 passes for 252 yards and two touchdowns in 2007 despite missing three games
with an injured foot. Bisci, a four-year starter at tight
end, completed his career ranked 17th in school history with 73
career receptions, and he had 797 yards and ten touchdowns in his career, averaging
10.9 yards per reception.
Morrissey, a
three-year starter at linebacker for the Greyhounds, led Moravian in tackles
this season despite missing the final game of the year with an injury. Morrissey
had 75 tackles with 35 solo stops, six tackles for loss, a fumble recovery
and a team high four forced fumbles this season. Morrissey
has a career total of 233 tackles after three seasons and will have a chance to
reach the top ten in school history next season.
Bocchino
had 40 tackles this season including 18 solo stops after missing the first game
of the year with an injury. He added six
tackles for loss, three sacks, a forced fumble, a pass break-up, a fumble
recovery in the end zone for a touchdown at Johns Hopkins University and an
interception returned 45yards for a touchdown versus Lebanon Valley College.
Maxwell
contributed 39 tackles this fall with 12 solo stops, two and a half tackles for
loss, a half a sack and a fumble recovery for his defensive end position.
Reckenbeil had
the best season as a kicker in school history, setting the school mark with 62
points on 29-of-29 extra-points and 11-of-20 field goals with a long of 37
yards. Reckenbeil became just the third kicker in Moravian history to
reach 100 career points on September 8th and set the all-time school
record for scoring by a kicker on September 29th. Reckenbeil
is first all-time with 154 career points on 70 extra-points (second all-time)
and 28 field goals (first all-time). Reckenbeil needs four extra-points to
set the school record, and has made 38 straight extra-points dating back to the
2006 season.
deRouen started the season at fullback before seeing
action at tailback due to injuries in the Moravian backfield. deRouen had 399 yards and
two touchdowns on 63 attempts with a long of 34 yards before an injury at
Franklin & Marshall sidelined him for the remainder of the season.
Robinson led
the Moravian defense with five interceptions in 2007 including four in a span
of three games in the middle of the season.
Robinson added 51 tackles
with 26 solo stops, a half a tackle of loss, a forced fumble and a fumble
recovery in his second season as a starter for the Greyhounds at safety.
