Greyhound Weekly Update, December 3, 2007 (-2222-)
Men’s Basketball – 3-2

The Greyhounds earned a 77-70 non-conference victory at
Kean University to snap a two-game losing streak. The game was close early and
tied at 5-5 before Moravian posted a 9-0 run for a 14-5 lead with 14:31
remaining in the first half. The Greyhounds lead would reach 11 points twice in
the first half, the second time at 19-8 with 11:43 until the intermission.
Moravian had a 31-23 advantage with 1:45 left in the first half but would not
score again for more than five minutes. The Greyhounds headed to the locker
room with a 31-25 lead after making 11 of 24 field goal attempts (45.8
percent), three of 12 three-pointers and six of seven free throws in the game's
first 20 minutes. The Cougars connected on 11 of 29 field goal attempts and
three of 11 three-pointers before the intermission. Moravian also had a 17-14
advantage in rebounds despite committing 12 turnovers to 11 for Kean. The
Cougars scored the first nine points of the second half to take a 34-31 lead
with 16:56 remaining before Moravian senior forward Eric Whitman (Blairstown, NJ/Notre Dame East Stroudsburg) connected
on a three-pointer at the 16:37 mark to tie the contest for the last time.
Whitman's three-pointer started a 12-0 Greyhound run for a 43-34 Moravian lead
with 14:50 remaining. Moravian continued to build on its lead going up by 14
points at 57-43 with 8:39 to play and holding its largest lead of the game of
18 points, 70-52, with 5:17 remaining. The Greyhounds continued to shoot the
ball well in the second half, making 14 of 25 second half field goals (56.0
percent), seven of 11 three-pointers and 11 of 18 free throws. Kean made 17 of
28 field goal attempts in the final 20 minutes, four of nine three pointers and
seven of eight free throws. Both teams had 28 rebounds in the contest with
Moravian committing 19 total turnovers while forcing Kean into 21 turnovers.
The Greyhounds had four players in double figures lead by 21 points from senior
guard Ryan Miller (Easton, PA/Easton),
who also had three assists. Whitman
and senior forward Mark Franzyshen (Somerset, NJ/Immaculata) each netted 15
points with Whitman grabbing a team
high seven rebounds and Franzyshen
adding five boards. Senior forward Chris
Earley (Brielle, NJ/Manasquan) had 13 points,
four rebounds and three assists for the Greyhounds while freshman guard Maurice Young (Philadelphia, PA/Chestnut
Hill Academy) added five points, three assists and a pair of steals.
Moravian won its inaugural Landmark Conference game, its
second straight victory overall, with a 96-85 win at The University of
Scranton. The Greyhounds jumped out to a quick 7-2 lead before the Royals
tossed in six straight points for an 8-7 edge with 17:39 on the clock. The game
went back-and-forth for several minutes before Moravian took a 25-21 at the
9:42 mark on a pair of free throws by Earley. Scranton would pull within one-point on two
occasions before Moravian had a seven point lead, 42-35 with 2:06 until the
intermission. The Royals finished the half on a 6-1 run to head to the locker
room trailing the Greyhounds, 43-41. Moravian shot the ball very well in the first
half, making 17 of 25 field goal attempts (68.0 percent), six of ten
three-pointers and three of four free throws. Scranton connected on 13 of 28
field goals, five of ten three-pointers and ten of 11 free throws in the first
20 minutes. The Greyhounds started the second half with a 10-2 run to push the
lead to double digits for the first time in the game at 53-43 on a lay-up by
freshman forward Chris Cullen (East
Islip, NY/East Islip). Moravian extended its lead to 15 points three times,
the first time on a Cullen lay-up at
11:43, 63-48, and the final time at the 3:48 mark on a three-pointer by Miller, 84-69. Scranton would get the
lead back under ten points in the final minute before Moravian hit five of six
free throws in the final 41 seconds to seal the victory. The Greyhounds
continued to shoot the ball well in the second half, making 14 of 27 field goal
attempts (51.9 percent), seven of 14 three-pointers and 15 of 22 free throws
while Scranton struggled in the final 20 minutes, connecting on 11 of 30 field
goal attempts, three of 14 three-pointers and 19 of 21 free throws. Moravian
also had a 33-27 advantage in rebounds. The Royals committed just eight
turnovers in the game while forcing the Greyhounds into 13 turnovers. Moravian
had five players in double figures including a career high 27 points from Earley, who also
had his first career double-double with ten rebounds. Earley also had four assists. Miller tossed in 20 points, his second
straight game over 20 points, while adding a team high six assists and three
rebounds. Cullen hit double digits
for the first time in his Moravian career with 14 points to go with five
rebounds while Franzyshen
also netted 14 points and grabbed five boards. Whitman finished with 11 points, four assists and four rebounds for
the Greyhounds while sophomore forward Eric
Weaver (Succasunna, NJ/Roxbury) had six points and three rebounds. Young had four points and three assists
while freshman guard Steve Siracusa (New Providence, NJ/New Providence) dished out
a career high six assists for Moravian.

The Greyhounds dropped their second
straight game, falling to The College of New Jersey, 74-52, in non-conference
action. The Lions jumped out to a 9-0 lead before Moravian got on the
scoreboard at the 15:46 mark on a jumper by sophomore guard Kate Harrison (Cold Spring Harbor, NY/Cold
Spring Harbor HS). TCNJ led by as many as 16 points at 24-8 with 11:43
remaining on the first half clock before heading to the locker room with a
38-26 lead. The Lions were 13 of 32 from the floor, four of ten behind the
three-point line and six of 12 at the foul line in the first half while
Moravian connected on just nine of 30 field goal attempts (30.0 percent), two
of six three-pointers and eight of 15 free throws. TCNJ quickly put the lead
back in double digits in the second half and would have a 25-point advantage,
64-39, with 6:31 remaining in the contest. The Greyhounds continued to struggle
shooting the ball in the second half, making just eight of 27 field goal
attempts (27.6 percent) and eight of 13 free throws while the Lions were 15 of
33 from the field, three of seven behind the three-point line and five for six
at the foul line in the final 20 minutes. TCNJ also had a 50-40 advantage in
rebounds. Moravian had just one player in double figures with Harrison netting a team high 14 points
to go with four rebounds and two steals. Freshman guard/forward Emily Smith (East Stroudsburg, PA/East
Stroudsburg South HS) netted eight points to go with three rebounds and two
steals for the Greyhounds while senior guard LaToya Blake (Allentown, PA/Dieruff HS) had six
points and six rebounds. Sophomore forward Kirsty Stearns (East Norwich, NY/Oyster Bay HS) contributed five points,
five rebounds and two assists for Moravian while sophomore guard Amanda Brown (Schuylkill Haven,
PA/Schuylkill Haven HS) added four points and six rebounds. Sophomore
forward Lauren Fornazor
(Rivervale, NJ/Pascack
Valley HS) had four points, five rebounds and two steals for Moravian.
Senior guard Megan Kocon
(Bethlehem, PA/Liberty HS) had a team high three assists for the Greyhounds
to go with three points as Moravian played without sophomore starters Jessica Foran
(Annandale, NJ/Rutgers Prep HS) and Alyssa
Bisci (Easton, PA/Easton HS) for the third straight game due to injuries.
Moravian snapped a two-game losing
streak and won its 2007-08 home opener with a 76-61
non-conference victory over Elizabethtown College in Johnston Hall. The
Greyhounds needed just seven seconds to take a lead with a basketball by Stearns. However, the Blue Jays would
eventually build a seven-point lead at 15-8 with 12:26 remaining in the first
half. Moravian pulled within two points at 17-15 on a lay-up by Brown but Elizabethtown pulled away
again, pushing the lead to 21-15. The Greyhounds eventually tied the game at
25-25 with 5:25 to play before the intermission, only to see the Blue Jays go
ahead by seven points again, 36-29 with 1:58 until halftime. Moravian scored
the final six points of the half to head to the locker room trailing by just a
point, 36-35. The Greyhounds connected on 14 of 28 first half field goal
attempts (50 percent), all three of their three-pointers and four of seven free
throws while Elizabethtown made 16 of 40 field goal attempts, two of nine
three-pointers and both of its free throws. The Blue Jays had a 25-15 advantage
in rebounds in the first 20 minutes and committed ten turnovers while forcing
Moravian into 11 miscues. Elizabethtown scored first to start the second half
before the Greyhounds eventually took the lead for good on a three-pointer by Brown at the 16:43 mark, giving
Moravian a 42-40 lead. The Greyhounds went on a 12-3 run at that point to push
their lead into double digits for the first time in the game, 54-43 with 11:08
to play. Moravian would lead by as many as 19 points three times including
76-57 after Kocon
hit a pair of free throws with 1:02 remaining on the clock. The Greyhounds continued
to shoot the ball well in the second half, making 17 of 35 field goal attempts
(48.6 percent), one of three three-pointers and six of seven free throws. The
Blue Jays struggled in the second half, making just ten of 29 field goals, one
of six three-pointers and four of nine free throws. Elizabethtown did finish
with a 45-35 advantage in rebounds; however, the Blue Jays had 12 turnovers in
the second half to just six for Moravian. The Greyhounds, who played without
injured starters Foran
and Bisci for the fourth straight
game, had four players in double figures led by Brown, who netted 16 points, to
go with a career high seven assists, four rebounds and three steals. Fornazor scored
a career high 15 points for Moravian with three boards and three steals while Harrison added 13 points, four
rebounds, four assists, three steals and a pair of blocked shots. Kocon netted a
career high 12 points, including six free throws, while Stearns had six points, six rebounds and two blocked shots. Emily Smith tossed in six points and
added four rebounds in the Greyhound victory while freshman forward Amie Ballo (Andes,
NY/Andes Central) had six points and three boards. Blake was held off of the scoreboard but contributed a career high
seven assists to go with six rebounds and three steals.

The Moravian College women’s indoor track & field
