Men’s Basketball – 7-10 (Landmark
Conference 3-4)
Junior
forward Eric Weaver (Succasunna,
NJ/Roxbury) and sophomore guard Maurice
Young (Philadelphia, PA/Chestnut Hill Academy) combined to go eight-for-ten
at the foul line in the final minute to help Moravian hold off Drew University
for a 68-61 victory in Landmark Conference action in Johnston Hall.
The win
snaps a four-game losing streak for the Greyhounds and improves the team’s
record to 6-10 overall and 2-4 in Landmark Conference action. Drew falls
to 4-12 on the year and is also 2-4 in conference play.
Moravian
took a 3-0 lead on a three-pointer from sophomore guard Charlie Rigoglioso (Wayne, NJ/Wayne Valley)
on the first possession of the contest. Drew opened the game with four
straight three-pointers with a pair from senior guard Gerard Mullin to give the
Rangers a 12-10 lead with 11:03 left in the half. Drew pushed its lead to
19-12 at the 7:00 mark on another Mullin three-pointer.
The
Greyhounds responded with an 8-0 run to take a 20-19 lead with 5:36 remaining
on a pair of Young free
throws. Drew retook the lead on a three-pointer from sophomore forward
Kyle Joyce 30 seconds later. Moravian would get the lead once more in the
half at 25-24 on a lay-up from junior forward Joseph Munley (Macungie, PA/Emmaus) with
1:36 until the intermission but the Greyhounds wouldn’t score again.
Junior guard Jared Coleman connected on a lay-up to send Drew to the locker
room with a 26-25 halftime lead.
Both teams
struggled shooting the ball in the first 20 minutes. Moravian was just
six-for-23 from the field (26.1 percent) and four of 14 on three-pointers;
however, the Greyhounds were nine-for-ten at the foul line. Moravian had
an 18-16 edge on the boards in the first half while both teams had eight
turnovers. Drew shot the ball a little better, making ten of 27 field
goal attempts (37 percent) and six of 15 three-pointers. The Rangers did not
get to the foul line in the first half.
Mullin hit a
three-pointer to open the second half and give Drew a 29-25 lead; however,
Moravian went on an 11-3 run, taking the lead for good on a Young jumper with
16:44 remaining. The Rangers would get within two points, 36-34, after a
lay-up from senior forward Bobby Clackner with 15:57
to play, but the Greyhounds responded with a 12-0 run to take a 48-34 lead on a
three-pointer from freshman guard Shane
Painter (Bedminster, NJ/Bernards) with 11:28 to
go.
The
Greyhounds led by 11 points, 53-42, after a tip-in from sophomore forward Chris Cullen (East Islip, NY/East Islip)
at the 7:33 mark when the Rangers went on a 10-2 run to pull within
three-points, 55-52, with 5:06 remaining after a lay-up from sophomore guard
Mike Mayes. Moravian would score the next seven points to push the lead
back to double-digits at 62-52 after two free throws by Weaver with a minute to go.

performance at the foul line to lead Moravian to a 77-67 Landmark Conference victory
over the United States Merchant Marine Academy in Johnston Hall.
The victory
is the second straight for the Greyhounds and lifts the team’s record to 7-10
overall and 3-4 in Landmark Conference action while the Mariners fall to 10-8
overall and 5-2 in conference play with their second straight loss.
Merchant
Marine scored quickly on a lay-up from junior center Max Paul just 12 seconds
into the game, and the Mariners would hold an 11-6 lead at the 15:09 mark after
another Paul lay-up. The Greyhounds ran off five straight points to tie
the contest at 11-11 on a pair of free throws from sophomore forward Chris Cullen with 13:46 left in the

mark when Greyhound senior forward Dave
Bowden (Beachwood, NJ/Toms River South) connected on a three-pointer to
lift Moravian to a 47-46 lead. USMMA would retake the lead and push it to
four points on three occasions, the final time at 61-57 with 4:44 to play on a
Grace three-pointer.
From that
point, Moravian finished the contest on a 20-6 run, and the Greyhounds would
take the lead for good on a three-pointer from Cullen that capped a 7-0 run to build a 64-61 lead with 2:46 to
