Greyhound Weekly Update, February 23, 2009 (-2222-)

 

Men’s Basketball – 10-15 (Landmark Conference 5-9)

               The University of Scranton men’s basketball team rallied from a 12-point deficit early in the second half to earn a 91-75 Landmark Conference victory over Moravian at the Long Center as the Royals clinched the top seed for the 2009 Landmark Conference Tournament.
            Scranton improves to 19-6 overall and 11-3 in Landmark Conference action, and the Royals will host The Catholic University of America in a Landmark Conference semifinal game on Wednesday, February 25th.  The Greyhounds close out the 2008-09 season with an overall record of 10-15 and a 5-9 mark in conference action after the loss.
            The Royals jumped out to a 4-0 lead on baskets by Eli Londo and Ryan FitzPatrick before the Greyhounds ran of five straight points on a three-point play from sophomore guard Maurice Young (Philadelphia, PA/Chestnut Hill Academy) and a lay-up by senior forward Dave Bowden (Beachwood, NJ/Toms River South) to take a 5-4 lead at the 16:47 mark.  Zach Ashworth put Scranton up 13-7 with a three-pointer with 13:41 to play in the first half.
            Moravian would go on a 9-2 run to retake the lead, 16-15, on a three-pointer from freshman guard Shane Painter (Bedminster, NJ/Bernards) at the 11:07 mark.  Paul Biagioli put the Royals back on top with a three-pointer 22 seconds later.  The Greyhounds then put together a 10-2 run including back-to-back three-pointers from freshman guard Sergio Camacho (Bethlehem, PA/Liberty) to give Moravian a 26-20 lead with 8:34 remaining in the first half. 
            The Greyhounds pushed their lead to nine points, 41-32, with 2:58 until the break on a Painter lay-up.  Scranton pulled within two points, 41-39, on a basket by Dan O’Connell with 1:07 on the clock but a three-pointer from Painter sent Moravian to the locker room with a 44-39 lead.
            Moravian made 14 of 31 field goal attempts (45.2 percent), seven of 11 three-pointers and nine of ten free throw attempts in the first 20 minutes of the game.  The Greyhounds had just four turnovers in the first half while Scranton committed seven turnovers.  The Royals also shot the ball well, making 15 of 30 field goal attempts (50 percent); however, Scranton was just three of seven on three-pointers and six of 13 at the foul line in the first 20 minutes.  The Royals did hold a 20-16 advantage in rebounds in the first half.
            The Greyhounds came out of the locker room and scored the first seven points of the second half with a three-pointer from sophomore guard Charlie Rigoglioso (Wayne, NJ/Wayne Valley) pushing the Moravian lead into double digits at 51-39 with 18:41 remaining in the game.  Scranton put together a 12-0 run to tie the game at 51-51 with 16:12 to play on a three-pointer by FitzPatrick.  Moravian would get the lead back to four points, 60-56, on a three-pointer by Camacho at the 13:09 mark, and the Greyhounds had a 62-59 advantage with 11:59 to play after a lay-up from freshman guard/forward Nelson Leon (Reading, PA/Reading).
            The teams would trade the lead over the next four minutes until Young tied the contest at 67-67 with a three-pointer at the 7:22 mark.  Scranton then went on a 9-0 run to take control of the game and build a 76-67 lead on an O’Connell three-pointer with 5:06 to go.  The 9-0 burst started a 24-8 run for the Royals to finish the game.
            Scranton connected on 16 of 24 field goal attempts (66.7 percent), seven of 12 three-pointers and 13 of 14 free throws in the final 20 minutes while finishing the game with a 41-22 advantage in rebounds.  The Royals did commit 14 turnovers while Moravian had just seven turnovers.  The Greyhounds’ shooting went cold in the second half as the team was just ten of 30 from the floor (33.3 percent), four of 11 on three-pointers and seven of eight at the foul line after the intermission.
            Moravian did place five players in double figures with Camacho tying his career high with a game high 19 points that included five three-pointers, and he had four steals and three assists.  Painter tossed in a career best 13 points to go with three rebounds while junior forward Eric Weaver (Succasunna, NJ/Roxbury) added 12 points and four boards for the Greyhounds.  Young tossed in ten points as did sophomore forward Chris Cullen (East Islip, NY/East Islip), who also had a team high five rebounds. Leon added six points, three assists and two rebounds for Moravian while Rigoglioso finished with three points.  Bowden had two points and two rebounds in his final game in a Greyhound uniform.

Women’s Basketball – 20-5 (Landmark Conference 10-4)

            The nationally-ranked University of Scranton women’s basketball team used a hot shooting performance from the floor to earn a 70-55 Landmark Conference victory over visiting Moravian in the final game of the regular season at the Long Center.
            The Royals, ranked 18th in the latest USA Today/ESPN Division III Coaches Poll and 25th in the D3hoops.com Top 25 Poll, won their 16th straight game to finish the regular season at 21-4 overall and 13-1 in Landmark Conference action.  Moravian drops to 20-5 overall and finished Landmark Conference play at 10-4, after falling for the fourth time in seven road games. The Greyhounds also had their three-game winning streak snapped with the loss. 
            Scranton will be the top seed in the 2009 Landmark Conference Tournament and host fourth seeded Susquehanna University on Wednesday, February 25th.  The Greyhounds will be the second seed in the tournament and host third seed Juniata College on Wednesday, February 25th at 7:00 p.m. in Johnston Hall where Moravian is 13-0 this season.
            The Royals jumped out to a 6-0 lead before junior forward Alyssa Bisci (Easton, PA/Easton) got the Greyhounds on the scoreboard at the 16:34 mark.  The Greyhounds trailed 6-4 with 15:30 on the clock after a lay-up from sophomore guard/forward Emily Smith (East Stroudsburg, PA/East Stroudsburg South) but that is as close as Moravian would get.  Scranton put together a 13-3 run to build a 19-7 lead with 10:36 left in the first half on a three-pointer by Ryan Mooney.
            Moravian would pull within six points on a three-point play by freshman guard Hilary Murray (Clinton, NJ/North Hunterdon) with 2:50 to go in the first half.  However, the Royals ran off seven straight points to go ahead 36-23 on a three-pointer from Megan Kopecki with 1:07 until the intermission.
            Scranton headed to the locker room with a 36-26 lead after shooting 16 of 31 from the floor (51.6 percent) and three of six on three-pointers in the first 20 minutes.  The Royals struggled from the foul line in the first half, making just one of six free throws, but Scranton had a 24-12 advantage in rebounds while both teams had seven turnovers.  Moravian struggled shooting the ball, connecting on just ten of 28 field goal attempts (35.7 percent), three of six three-pointers and three of five free throw attempts.
            The Royals started the second half with a 14-5 run to build a 50-31 lead at the 16:14 mark on a three-pointer by Jennifer King.  Moravian would only get within 14 points three times the rest of the game while Scranton pushed the lead to 20 points when a lay-up from Molly Klusek gave the Royals a 59-39 lead with eight minutes remaining.
            Scranton continued its hot shooting in the second half, making 12 of 21 field goal attempts (57.1 percent), one of four three-pointers and just nine of 19 free throw attempts in the final 20 minutes.  The Royals had a 47-29 advantage in rebounds for the game while committing 21 turnovers.  Moravian’s shooting woes continued in the second half, connecting on just ten of 32 field goal attempts (31.3 percent) and one of four three-pointers.  The Greyhounds, who are the top free throw shooting team in the nation and the only school at over 80 percent for the season, were just eight of 12 in the second half at the foul line to finish the game at 11 of 17 (64.7 percent).
            The only Greyhound in double figures was Bisci with a game high 16 points to go with three rebounds and two assists.  Smith tossed in nine points and added three steals off of the bench while junior forward Kirsty Stearns (East Norwich, NY/Oyster Bay) had eight points and four boards for Moravian.  Sophomore guard/forward Amy Heffner (Schnecksville, PA/Parkland) contributed seven points and three rebounds while freshman forward Alexandra Blair (Hellertown, PA/Bethlehem Catholic) had five points.
            Moravian junior guard/forward Kate Harrison (Cold Spring Harbor, NY/Cold Spring Harbor), the team’s leading scorer, did not score but did contribute four rebounds and four assists.  Junior guard Jessica Foran (Annandale, NJ/Rutgers Prep) was limited to two points and three rebounds while junior guard Amanda Brown (Schuylkill Haven, PA/Schuylkill Haven) had three points and two boards.  Murray had three points and three assists for the Greyhounds while junior forward Lauren Fornazor (Rivervale, NJ/Pascack Valley) had three rebounds, two points and two steals.

            Moravian sent ten competitors to the non-scoring 2009 Susquehanna University Open as the team's final meet before the 2009 Landmark Conference Champsionships. Senior Robert Shaffer (Pottsville, PA/Pottsville) placed third in the 55-meter dash in an ECAC qualifying time of 6.57 seconds in the finals after a time of 6.66 in the preliminaries. Sophomore Eric Woodruff (Brodheadsville, PA/Pius X) placed fourth in the event in 6.59 seconds, which also qualified him for the ECAC Championships. Woodruff ran a time of 6.60 seconds in the preliminaries.

Shaffer and Woodruff combined with sophomore Warner Jones (Hillsborough, NJ/Hillsborough) and freshman Kyle D'Angelo (Voorhees, NJ/Eastern) to win the 4x200-meter relay in an ECAC qualifying time of 1:32.54. Moravian's 4x800-meter relay squad of senior Timothy Murphy (Bethlehem, PA/Bethlehem Catholic), junior Steve Parisi (Kunkletown, PA/Pleasant Valley) and sophomores Connor Skutches (Bethlehem, PA/Liberty) and Jacob Tazik (Wyomissing, PA/Wyomissing) took second in an ECAC qualifying time of 8:01.19 while Jones, Skutches, senior Jeremiah Reinhart (Effort, PA/Pleasant Valley) and freshman Steve Ambrosi (Parsippany, NJ/Parsippany Hills) posted an ECAC qualifying time of 10:35.89 in the 4,000-meter distance medley relay to finish third.

            Moravian sent four competitors to the non-scoring 2009 Susquehanna University Open as the team's final meet before the 2009 Landmark Conference Champsionships. Sophomore Sydni Wisniewski (Orlando, FL/Winter Park) captured first place in the 400-meter dash in an ECAC qualifying time of 59.49 seconds while freshman Hailey Neff (Lehighton, PA/Lehighton) placed fourth in the 800-meter run in 2:23.58. Wisniewski and Neff combined with junior Katelyn Chando (Coopersburg, PA/Southern Lehigh) and freshman Brooke DiNitzio (South Plainfield/South Plainfield) to win the 4x400-meter relay in a school record and ECAC qualifying time of 4:05.88.

 

 


Greyhound Weekly Update, February 16, 2009 (-6666-)

 

Men’s Lacrosse -- 0-0 (Landmark Conference 0-0)

This Week – Sat., Feb. 28th vs. McDaniel College, 12:00 p.m.

 

            Moravian began its 2009 season with a 19-4 non-conference loss to Montclair State University at Rocco Calvo Field. The Greyhounds jumped on the scoreboard first on an unassisted goal by freshman midfielder Jesse Peterson (Branchburg, NJ/Somerville) just under five minutes into the contest.  However, Moravian would not score again until the third quarter as the Red Hawks ran off 12 straight goals to build a 12-1 lead. The match had been tied 1-1 at the end of the first quarter but Montclair State led 7-1 at halftime and 16-3 after three quarters.  The Red Hawks finished the contest with a 50-28 advantage in shots and a 57-31 edge in ground balls while winning 22 of 26 face-offs.

Sophomore attack David Bennett (Easton, PA/Easton) led Moravian with two goals while sophomore midfielder Robert Devine (Mountain Lakes, NJ/Mountain Lakes) had a goal, which came with a man-down, two assists and five ground balls.  Senior defender Steven Carroll (West Caldwell, NJ/James Caldwell) led the Greyhounds with seven ground balls and five caused turnovers while freshman defender Merrick Smith (Stonington, CT/The Williams School) had four ground balls and three caused turnovers.  Peterson added three ground balls to go with his goal.

Moravian senior goalie Benjamin Larson (Dover, DE/Dover) had 11 saves in 45 minutes of action while sophomore keeper Benjamin Leavy (Moorestown, NJ/Moorestown) made one save in the final quarter for the Greyhounds.  Montclair State senior goalie Thomas Bowers made 13 saves.

            The Greyhounds opened their 2009 season with a 9-4 loss to Rutgers-Camden in the first game at the Floyd B. Wilcox Memorial Tournament being hosted by Hampden-Sydney College in Virginia.  Moravian jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the top of the first inning when freshman designated hitter Austin Rock (Arlington, VA/Flour Bluff) hit a two-run homer in his first collegiate at-bat that scored sophomore right fielder Jason Huber, who had walked. 

The Scarlet Raptors would score in the bottom of the fourth inning on an RBI single by Greg Hunt.  The Raptors would then score twice in the bottom of the sixth inning to take a 3-2 lead when Scott Fruits hit an RBI triple to score Steve Myers.  Two batters later, Tom Clarke singled in Fruits with the go ahead run. 

Moravian retook the lead in the top of the seventh with an RBI double from Huber scoring senior center fielder Eric Shea (Madison, NJ/Morristown Beard), who had led off the inning with a single. Huber eventually crossed the plate on an RBI sacrifice fly by freshman first baseman Kevin O'Keefe (Alexandria, VA/Bishop Ireton).

Rutgers-Camden added four runs in the bottom of the seventh including a game-winning single by Myers and two in the eighth for a 9-4 lead. 

Moravian had 12 hits in the game with three by senior second baseman Kevin Gambrino (Brick, NJ/Monsignor Donovan)Shea, Huber and senior left fielder Joseph Durso (Middletown, NJ/Christian Brother Academy) each had two hits for the Greyhounds while Rutgers-Camden had 14 hits in this contest including a three-for-four performance by Myers. 

Freshman Thomas Fenyak (Centreville, VA/Westfield), who made his first collegiate start for Moravian, suffered the loss allowing seven runs on ten hits and no walks with five strikeouts in 6 1/3 innings.  Junior Ryan Cummings (Toms River, NJ/Toms River East) finished the contest on the mound for the Greyhounds, allowing two runs on four hits and no walks in 1 2/3 innings of action.  Brandon Large earned the victory for Rutgers-Camden with one inning of relief action.

Moravian had an early two-run lead slip away for the second straight day as the Greyhounds fell to host Hampden-Sydney College, 10-6, in the second day of the Floyd B. Wilcox Memorial Tournament. Moravian jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning.  Senior outfielder Eric Shea led off with a single and stole second base before scoring on an RBI single from freshman catcher Joe Bartolacci (Easton, PA/Notre Dame).

The Greyhounds pushed their lead to 2-0 in the top of the second inning.  Freshman first baseman Kevin O’Keefe and freshman third baseman Gregg Steinman (Miami, FL/Palmer Trinity School) led off with back-to-back singles and moved into scoring position on a sacrifice bunt by senior designated hitter Thomas CzarneckiO’Keefe scored on an RBI ground out from freshman shortstop Dave Zubia (Bethlehem, PA/Bethlehem Catholic).

Hampden-Sydney took the lead with four runs in the bottom of the second inning.  Luke Swiney had a two-RBI double in the inning while Herbie Williams added an RBI triple.

Moravian scored twice in the top of the third inning to tie the contest at 4-4.  Sophomore outfielder Jason Huber led off with a single and moved to third on a double from senior outfielder Joseph Durso, the 30th of his career.  Bartolacci followed with a two-RBI triple.

The Greyhounds retook the lead with a pair of runs in the top of the fifth inning.  Huber led off with a single and moved to second on a balk.  Durso then drew a walk.  Huber scored on an RBI single by senior second baseman Kevin Gambrino, and Gambrino eventually scored on an RBI double from O’Keefe.

Hampden-Sydney came right back in the bottom half of the fifth inning to knot the score at 6-6 on an RBI double by Williams and an RBI single from A.J. Prill.  Hampden-Sydney would push four runs across the plate in the bottom of the sixth inning to take a 10-6 lead.  Williams drove in two runs with a triple, and he scored on an RBI single from Prill.  Evan Rogers drove in the final run of the game with an RBI single.

Moravian had 15 hits in the contest with Shea going three-for-five in the leadoff spot.  Bartolacci, Huber and O’Keefe each had two hits for the Greyhounds.  Hampden-Sydney had 13 hits in the contest with Williams going four-for-five in the leadoff position.

Freshman pitcher Brendan Close (Bethlehem, PA/Freedom) made his first collegiate start for the Greyhounds, allowed six runs, four of them earned, on seven hits with eight strikeouts in four innings of action.  Junior Joe Melchionna (Marlboro, NJ/St. John Vianney) suffer the loss for Moravian, giving up four runs, two earned, on five hits and two walks in 1 2/3 innings of action.  Senior Thomas Murray (Staten Island, NY/Moore Catholic) tossed 1 1/3 innings with a hit, two walks and a strikeout for the Greyhounds while sophomore Luke Skutches (Bethlehem, PA/Bethlehem Catholic) had two walks in an inning of action.

Moravian pounded out 27 hits to earn its first win of the season, a 25-10 victory over Waynesburg University to finish off the team’s three-game trip to the Floyd B. Wilcox Memorial Tournament hosted by Hampden-Sydney College to begin the 2009 season. The Yellow Jackets jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the top of the first inning.  Designated hitter Patrick Logan drove in the first run with an RBI sacrifice fly before outfielder Rob Cool had an RBI double.  Outfielder Kenny Grant finished off the scoring with a two-RBI single. 

The Greyhounds answered in the bottom half of the first inning and tied the score at 4-4.  Senior outfielder Eric Shea led off with a double but was out on a fielder’s choice by sophomore outfielder Josh Huber.  After a walk by senior outfielder Joseph Durso, freshman designated hitter Joe Bartolacci connected on a two-RBI triple to score Huber and Durso.  Senior second baseman Kevin Gambrino followed with an RBI single scoring Bartolacci, and Gambrino cross the plate on an RBI single from sophomore first baseman Jake Schweitzer (Bethlehem, PA/Bethlehem Catholic).

Waynesburg took the lead right back in the top of the second inning, 5-4, on an RBI sacrifice fly by shortstop Anthony Defilippo that scored outfielder Andrew Spargar, who had led off the inning with a single.

Moravian would take the lead for good in the bottom half of the second inning with four runs to build an 8-5 lead.  Huber reached on an error to lead off the inning, and Durso followed with an RBI double, his 31st career double, to score HuberGambrino had his second RBI single of the game to score Durso while senior catcher Michael LaVerghetta (Center Valley, PA/Southern Lehigh) drove in Gambrino and freshman third baseman Gregg Steinman.

The Greyhounds would add five more runs in the bottom of the third inning for a 13-5 advantage.  Shea led off with a single, stole second base and moved to third on a wild pitch before scoring on an RBI single from Durso, the 120th hit of his career moving him into a tie for seventh in school history.  Four batters later, Schweitzer connected on a grand slam home run, his first homer of the season, to score Durso, Bartolacci and Steinman

Waynesburg would score three times in the top of the sixth inning to pull within 13-8.  Cool would score on an error by Moravian while Defilippo had a two-RBI single.

Moravian answered with five runs in the bottom half of the sixth to extend the Greyhound lead to 18-8.  The Greyhounds started the inning with four straight singles with Shea’s RBI hit scoring Schweitzer.  Sophomore outfielder Kirk Pastre had a two-RBI double to score freshman catcher Eric Volpe (Media, PA/Penncrest), who had come in as a pinch runner earlier in the inning, and freshman shortstop Dave Zubia, who had singled.  Durso hit an RBI sacrifice fly to plate Shea while Bartolacci had an RBI single to score Pastre.

The Yellow Jackets scored a run in the top of the seventh inning when first baseman Bill Hanning reached on an error to lead off the inning and scored on a two-out RBI single by third baseman Corey Goeggleman.

Moravian finished off its scoring in the bottom of the seventh inning with seven runs to extend the lead to 25-9.  Sophomore first baseman Jacob Millen (Whitehall, PA/Whitehall) reached on an error to lead off the inning and moved to third on a double by freshman catcher Blake Shortall (Kintnersville, PA/Freedom)Dave Zubia hit a two-RBI double to score Millen and Shortall, and senior outfielder Thomas Czarnecki was then hit by a pitch.  Durso singled to load the bases before an RBI fielder’s choice by junior designated hitter Brad Bodine drive in Dave Zubia.  Junior second baseman Mike Zubia hit an RBI single to score Czarnecki before a walk by sophomore third baseman Jon Baltz (Easton, PA/Easton)Millen came back to the plate and connected on a two-RBI single scoring Bodine and Mike Zubia while Dave Zubia eventually reached on an error to score Baltz with the final run of the inning.

Waynesburg finished off the scoring with a single run in the top of the eighth inning when Defilippo hit a one-out double and then scored on a wild pitch.

Moravian had a season high 27 hits in the game with Bartolacci going four-for-five with three RBIs.  Durso was three-for-three with three RBIs to move into a tie for sixth in school history with 121 career hits while Schweitzer was three-for-four with five RBIs.  Shea went three-for-five for the Greyhounds while Dave Zubia was three-for-six with three RBIs.  Gambrino, Steinman and Pastre each had two hits with both of Pastre’s hits going for extra bases.

The Yellow Jackets had 13 hits in the game with Spargar going three-for-four.  Defilippo, Cool and Goegelmann each had two hits.

Junior Philip Spence (Lafayette, NJ/Newton) earned the victory on the mound for Moravian, allowing eight runs, only five earned, on 11 hits and two walks while striking out three batters in 5 2/3 innings of action.  Junior Andrew DelRossi (Medford, NJ/Bishop Eustace) allowed an unearned run and a hit with two strikeouts in 1 1/3 innings while junior Andrew DeLio (Parsippany, NJ/Parsippany) gave up a run on a hit and a walk with one strikeout in an inning of action.  Junior Brandon Palmisano (Mountainhome, PA/Pius X) finished the game for the Greyhounds on the mound with a strikeout while working a perfect ninth inning.

The women’s lacrosse team will open up their season on this Saturday when they are set to take on Swarthmore College at Haverford College beginning at 3:00 p.m.
