Moravian
had three competitors on the first day of the 2009 NCAA Division III Indoor
National Championships being hosted by Rose-Hulman
Institute of Technology.
The Greyhounds were tied for fifth of 40 teams scoring points on the first day of competition with ten points. Moravian finished the meet tied for 21st of 68 teams scoring points. Wartburg College won the team national championship with 51 points.
Junior Anna Heim (Moorestown, NJ/Moorestown) earned All-America accolades for the second straight year indoors in the pole vault and the third time in her career as she cleared a school record 3.86 meters (12 feet, eight inches) to finish second on the number of jumps at the height. Heim was one of four competitors that attempted to clear an NCAA meet record of 3.96 meters (12 feet, 11 3/4 inches); however, all four missed their three attempts at the height.
Junior Symonne Scott (Attleboro, MA/Attleboro) competed in the first event of the day, the long jump, and earned All-America honors for the first time in her career with a seventh place jump of 5.42 meters (17 feet, 9 1/2 inches). Scott jumped the distance on her second jump of the preliminary flight and then again on her first jump in the finals. Scott earned two team points for her finish.
Junior Jessica Posimo (Philadelphia, PA/St. Basil Academy) ran in the preliminaries of the 55-meter hurdles, finishing eighth in her heat and 13th overall in a time of 8.43 seconds.

Sophomore attack David Bennett (Easton, PA/Easton) netted a hat trick including the game-winning goal as Moravian earned its first win of the 2009 season, defeating Gwynedd-Mercy College, 8-5, in non-conference action at Rocco Calvo Field.
The Greyhounds jumped out to a 4-0 lead and were ahead 4-1 after the first quarter. The Griffins, who are in their first year as a varsity sport, scored two of the three goals in the second quarter to pull within 5-3 at halftime. Moravian scored twice in the third quarter for a 7-3 lead after 45 minutes of action. Gwynedd-Mercy had a 27-24 edge in shots and won ten of 16 face-offs in the match while the Greyhounds held a 31-28 advantage in ground balls.
Freshman attack Jesse Peterson (Branchburg, NJ/Somerville) added two goals for Moravian including a man-down goal in the second quarter, three caused turnovers and four ground balls while sophomore midfielder Robert Devine (Mountain Lakes, NJ/Mountain Lakes) had one goal and one assists to go with three caused turnovers and a team high six ground balls. Senior attacks Christopher Danni (Macungie, PA/Emmaus) and Jason Tosches each had goals for Moravian while sophomore attack Christopher Mohapp (Jamison, PA/Central Bucks South) added two assists.
Senior defender Steven Carroll (West Caldwell, NJ/James Caldwell) had four ground balls for the Greyhounds while sophomore goalie Benjamin Leavy (Moorestown, NJ/Moorestown) had 14 saves and three ground balls in his first start of the season.
Freshmen midfielders Stefan Hetland and Nicholas Coan led Gwynedd-Mercy with a goal and two assists each while freshman midfielders Thomas Stewart, Steve Miner and attack Jonathan Schmitt each had goals. Freshman midfielder Robert Kats led the Griffins by winning ten of 16 face-offs while freshman defender Michael Henry had a team high five ground balls.
Moravian netted the final six goals of the match but couldn’t overcome falling behind 6-0 in a 13-11 non-conference loss at Richard Stockton College of New Jersey.
The Ospreys jumped out to that 6-0 with all of the goals coming in the first quarter. The Greyhounds scored the first three goals of the second quarter to cut the Richard Stockton lead in half, 6-3; however, the Ospreys netted five of the next six goals to head to halftime with an 11-4 lead. Richard Stockton scored two of the first three goals in the third quarter and still led 13-7 after 45 minutes of action. Moravian scored all of the goals in the fourth quarter to pull within 13-10 with 11:34 to play and within 13-11 with 4:43 remaining. Richard Stockton had a 39-30 advantage in shots, a 38-28 edge in ground balls and won 15 of 27 face-offs in the match.
Sophomore attack David Bennett led Moravian with his second straight hat trick to go with two assists while sophomore midfielder Robert Devine and senior attack Christopher Danni each had two goals and an assist. Senior attack Jason Tosches, sophomore midfielder David Forte, freshman midfielder Jesse Peterson and freshman midfielder Joseph Perrino (Wall, NJ/Wall) each had one goal for the Greyhounds.
Sophomore attack Christopher Mohapp, freshman attack Jacob Harris (Mount Holly, NJ/Rancocas Valley) and freshman defender Merrick Smith each had assists for Moravian. Senior defender Steven Carroll led the Greyhounds with five ground balls while sophomore defender Michael Santos added three ground balls and two caused turnovers. Devine and freshman defender Kevin Jordan (Long Valley, NJ/West Morris Central) each had three ground balls. Freshman midfielder Zachary Stein (Schnecksville, PA/Bethlehem Catholic) won six of 11 face-offs for the Greyhounds while Forte won five of nine face-offs.
Sophomore goalie Benjamin Leavy made nine saves and added three ground balls in the first half for the Greyhounds while senior keeper Benjamin Larson (Dover, DE/Dover) had eight saves in the second half.

Amy Vachal scored four goals and an assist to
lead the Swarthmore College women’s lacrosse team to a 13-5 non-conference victory
over Moravian to begin the 2009 season at the Tri-Co Invitational hosted by
Haverford College.
The Greyhounds jumped out to a 1-0 lead on a free position goal by junior attack Jillian Pagliei (Ivyland, PA/Council Rock North) ten minutes into the contest. Swarthmore would score the next three goals before Moravian freshman attack Heather Yawger (Morristown, NJ/Academy of St. Elizabeth) scored her first goal of her career. The Garnet added three more goals before junior midfielder Paige Warbrick (Souderton, PA/Souderton Area) scored with 1:44 left in the first half to cut the lead to 6-3.
Swarthmore would score the first three goals of the second half to put the Garnet up 9-3 to take control of the match. Swarthmore had a 35-24 advantage in shots and a 20-18 edge in ground balls. The Garnet also had a 12-8 edge in draw controls in the match.
Yawger led Moravian with two goals while Pagliei, Warbrick and junior defender Katie Wise (Ardsley, PA/Abington) each scored once with Wise adding three ground balls. Freshman attack Allison Hess had an assist in her first career match while sophomore midfielder Sarah Carman (Perkasie, PA/Pennridge) led the Greyhounds with seven ground balls and two caused turnovers.
Junior goalie Courtney Rosenberg (Cape May, NJ/Lower Cape May Regional) had 16 saves in goal for the Greyhounds. Allison Grein had 11 saves in the contest for Swarthmore.
Amanda McGovern netted five goals and added two assists to lead the Muhlenberg College women's lacrosse team to a 20-4 non-conference victory over rival Muhlenberg College at Scotty Wood Stadium. McGovern netted the first goal of the contest just 2:32 into the game as the Mules scored the first six goals. Muhlenberg led 13-3 after 30 minutes and finished the match with a 31-17 advantage in shots, a 21-14 edge in ground balls and a 14-12 edge in draw controls.
Danielle Rosen added three goals and five assists for a team high eight points for Muhlenberg while Ruth Morronigello had three goals and an assist to go with a team leading six draw controls. Sara Hiller and Danielle Scarrone each had two goals and an assist for the Mules while Alyssa Bascelli, Angela Napoletano, Christine Van Hie, Kelsey Elmer and Sarah Hetrick all scored a goal. Allisyn Vachon had eight saves in just over 52 minutes of action for Muhlenberg while Dana Tedesco had one save in the final 7:46 of the match.
Sophomore midfielder Maureen Helfers (Westbury, NY/W.T. Clarke) led Moravian with two goals while junior defender Katie Wise and junior midfielder Paige Warbrick each netted goals. Wise also had a team high three draw controls for the Greyhounds while sophomore midfielder Sarah Carmon had an assist. Sophomore defender Taylor Sperduto (Morristown, NJ/Morristown-Beard) led Moravian with three ground balls. Junior goalie Courtney Rosenberg had six saves for the Greyhounds to become the school record holder with 218 career saves.
Moravian rallied from a two-goal deficit in the final 2:38 of the match to tie the contest but was unable to post its first win of the season, falling to Wesley College, 12-11, in a non-conference match.
The Wolverines scored the first two goals of the match before the Greyhounds tied the contest at 2-2. The teams would trade goals the rest of the first half and head to the intermission tied at 4-4. Moravian scored the first two goals of the second half to build a 6-4 lead on an extra-attacker goal by junior Jillian Pagliei with 24:16 to play. The Greyhounds had a 9-8 lead after Pagliei’s fourth goal of the half with 12:17 remaining before Wesley scored three straight goals to take an 11-9 lead with 6:02 to play.
Moravian sophomore midfielder Maureen Helfers scored with 2:38 to play while senior attack Georgia Castellano tied the match with 1:34 to go. Wesley’s Leslie Cervenka netted her third goal of the contest with 35 seconds to play for the victory. The Greyhounds had a 35-28 advantage in shots and a 13-12 edge in draw controls while the Wolverines held a 27-20 advantage in ground balls.
Pagliei led the Greyhounds with four goals and an assist while junior midfielder Paige Warbrick added three goals. Sophomore midfielder Sarah Carman added two goals and an assist to go with three ground balls and a pair of caused turnovers while Helfers and Castellano each scored goals. Helfers had a team high four ground balls to go with two draw controls. Junior defender Katie Wise added an assist for Moravian.
Junior goalie Courtney Rosenberg made ten saves for Moravian while sophomore midfielder Angel Genther (Cherry Hill, NJ/Cherry Hill West) and freshman attack Allison Hess (Harleysville, PA/Souderton) each had three draw controls.

Baseball -- 9-5 (Landmark

The Greyhounds opened their 2009 home season with an 11-10, eight-inning non-conference victory over Albright College at Gillespie Field.
The Lions took a 2-0 in the top of the third inning. Junior first baseman Casey Lawrence and senior third baseman Jason Dunkelberger each had two-out RBI singles in the inning.
Moravian tied the game at 2-2 in the bottom half of the third inning. Senior outfielder Eric Shea (Madison, NJ/Morristown Beard) had a one-out single and scored on a two-out RBI double from senior outfielder Joseph Durso (Middletown, NJ/Christian Brother Academy), the 36th double of his career, a record Durso already owns. Freshman first baseman Kevin O’Keefe (Alexandria, VA/Bishop Ireton) followed with an RBI single to score Durso.
Albright retook the lead in the top of the fourth inning. Junior outfielder Eric Nolan led off the inning with a single and scored on an RBI double by sophomore outfielder Kyle McGee.
The Greyhounds would push seven runs across the plate in the bottom half of the fourth inning to take the lead for good at 9-3. Senior second baseman Kevin Gambrino (Brick, NJ/Monsignor Donovan) drew a walk to lead off the inning before freshman third baseman Gregg Steinman (Miami, FL/Palmer Trinity School) singled. After a ground out, freshman shortstop Dave Zubia hit an RBI single to tie the game by scoring Gambrino. Shea then hit an RBI double down the left field line to score Steinman and put Moravian ahead. Sophomore outfielder Jason Huber had an RBI single to score Zubia before Durso connected on his first homer of the season, a three-run shot to right center. O’Keefe would keep the Greyhound inning going with a double. Junior outfielder Brad Bodine (Mt. Bethel, PA/Bangor) and Gambrino walked to load the bases before for Steinman hit an RBI sacrifice fly scoring O’Keefe with the final run of the inning.
The Lions scored three times in the top of the fifth inning to cut the Moravian lead to 9-6. Sophomore shortstop Patrick Brady and junior pitcher/designated hitter Shane Stein each drew walks to lead off the inning. Dunkelberger then hit a one-out, three-run home run down the right field line.
Moravian scored again in the bottom half of the fifth inning. Huber reached on an error with two outs and moved to third on a stolen base and a throwing error. O’Keefe then hit an RBI single to score Huber.
Albright would get a run in the top of the seventh inning when Brady led off the inning with a walk and scored on an RBI single by Lawrence.
The Greyhounds scored what ended up being the winning run in the bottom of the seventh inning. Durso reached on an error to start the inning. Sophomore first baseman Jake Schweitzer (Bethlehem, PA/Bethlehem Catholic) put down a sacrifice bunt to move Durso to second before an RBI double down the right field line from freshman designated hitter Joe Bartolacci (Easton, PA/Notre Dame) to score Durso.
The Lions made things close with three runs in the top of the eighth inning. McGee walked to lead off the inning, and sophomore pinch hitter Justin Danser also drew a walk. Storms attempted to lay down a sacrifice bunt; however the Greyhounds attempted to get McGee at third base. The throw was dropped and rolled into left field allowing McGee to score. Sophomore Shawn Walbert came up for Albright and laid down another bunt but reached on a throwing error to load the bases. Brady would hit into an RBI fielder’s choice scoring Danser before Storms scored on a sacrifice fly by Lawrence.
The umpires call the game prior to the start of the ninth inning due to darkness.
Moravian had a 15-8 advantage in hits with O’Keefe going three-for-four and Shea going three-for-five with two doubles. Steinman, Huber and Durso each had two hits with Durso becoming the third player in school history to reach 130 career hits. Durso also had four RBIs to move into second in school history with 89 career RBIs.
The Greyhounds used a planned pitching by committee in the game with five pitchers scheduled to throw in the game, and the squad eventually used seven pitchers. Junior Philip Spence (Lafayette, NJ/Newton) started on the mound for Moravian and tossed 2 2/3 innings, allowing two runs on two hitsl. Sophomore Luke Skutches (Bethlehem, PA/Bethlehem Catholic) pitched 1 1/3 innings, allowing a run on three hits. Junior Joe Melchionna (Marlboro, NJ/St. John Vianney) pitched an inning allowing three runs on a hit and two walks with one strikeout while freshman Thomas Fenyak (Centreville, VA/Westfield) tossed a scoreless inning with a strikeout for his third win of the season. Freshman Brendan Close (Bethlehem, PA/Freedom) allowed a run on a hits and two walks while striking out one batter in his inning of work. Senior Thomas Murray (Staten Island, NY/Moore Catholic) walked the only two batters he faced, allowing a pair of unearned runs while junior Zack Andes (Moscow, PA/North Pocono) gave up an unearned run on a hit and a walk in a third of an inning. Junior Ryan Cummings (Toms River, NJ/Toms River East) tossed the final two-thirds of an inning for Moravian, striking out one batter for his second save of the season.
Moravian opened its 2009 Landmark Conference season with a 6-1 loss at Susquehanna University in the first game of a doubleheader at Bollinger Field.
Susquehanna took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning when Tyler Reichard singled with two outs, stole second base and scored on an RBI single from Chris Price.
The Greyhounds would tie the game in the top of the second inning. Freshman catcher Austin Rock (Arlington, VA/Flour Bluff) connected on a one-out double and scored on an RBI single by senior second baseman Kevin Gambrino.
The Crusaders retook the lead, 3-1, in the bottom of the third inning with two runs on RBI singles by Reichard and Price. Susquehanna added a run in the bottom of the fifth inning on an RBI double by Reichard, and the Crusaders added two more runs in the bottom of the sixth inning on an RBI double by Kurt Yannelli and a Moravian error.
Susquehanna had a 7-6 edge in hits in the game with Reichard going three-for-three with a pair of RBIs and two runs scored. Price was two-for-three with two RBIs. Moravian had six different players with hits in the game.
Moravian junior Ryan Cummings suffered his first loss of the season on the mound, allowing five runs on six hits and a walk with a season high nine strikeouts in 5 1/3 innings of action. Junior Brandon Palmisano (Mountainhome, PA/Pius X) tossed the final 2/3 of an inning, giving up a run on one hit.
The Greyhounds earned their first Landmark Conference win of the season, shutting out host Susquehanna University, 9-0, in the second game of a doubleheader at Bollinger Field to earn a split of the twinbill.
Freshman pitcher Brendan Close tossed his first collegiate shutout in the game for Moravian, allowing just three hits and a pair of walks while striking out six Crusaders in his first complete game of the year.
The Greyhounds would give Close all the offense he needed with two runs in the top of the first inning. Senior outfielder Eric Shea drew a walk to start the game before senior outfielder Joseph Durso had a one-out infield single. Freshman first baseman Kevin O’Keefe followed with an RBI single up the middle to score Shea. Junior designated hitter Brad Bodine then followed with an RBI sacrifice fly to score Durso.
Moravian added four more runs in the top of the second inning to push the lead to 6-0. Freshman third baseman Gregg Steinman led off the inning with a single, and freshman catcher Blake Shortall followed with a walk. Freshman shortstop Dave Zubia singled to load the bases before Steinman scored on a wild pitch. Shea hit an RBI ground out to score Shortall, and then sophomore outfielder Jason Huber hit an RBI double to chase Zubia home. Durso drew a walk before Huber moved to third on a wild pitch. O’Keefe would reach on an RBI fielder’s choice, scoring Huber while Durso was out on the play.
The Greyhounds scored a run in the top of the fourth inning for a 7-0 lead. Shea was hit by a pitch with one out and moved to second on a passed ball. Huber then drew a walk before Durso connected on an RBI double, the 37th double of his career.
Moravian finished off the scoring with two runs in the top of the sixth inning. Huber singled to start the inning, and after a wild pitch moved Huber to second, Durso walked. Another wild pitch moved Huber and Durso up 90 feet before Bodine connected on a two-RBI single down the left field line scoring both runners.
The Greyhounds had a 9-3 advantage in hits in the game with Durso and Bodine each going two-for-three. Durso’s two hits moved him into second in school history with 132 in his career, and he also owns the school record for career doubles. Huber was two-for-four in the game for Moravian while Lunardi had two of Susquehanna’s three hits in the contest.
Moravian continued its hot hitting and high scoring ways with 14 more hits in a 12-1 Landmark Conference victory over Susquehanna University at Bollinger Field. The Greyhounds have now scored 144 runs in 14 games this season, and seven of Moravian’s 14 hits in the game went for extra- bases. Moravian also has 183 hits on the year with 58 for extra-bases.
Moravian jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the top of the first inning. Senior outfielder Eric Shea was hit by a pitch to lead off the game and moved to third on a double from sophomore outfielder Jason Huber. Senior outfielder Joseph Durso followed with a two-RBI double to score Shea and Huber. Freshman first baseman Kevin O’Keefe was hit by a pitch, and freshman designated hitter Joe Bartolacci walked to load the bases. Durso scored on a wild pitch before an RBI ground out from senior second baseman Kevin Gambrino drove in O’Keefe.
The Greyhounds would add three more runs in the top of the second inning for a 7-0 lead. Durso got things going with a two-out double, his team leading tenth double of the season and the 39th of his career, a school record Durso already owns. O’Keefe was hit by a pitch before Bartolacci connected on a two-out, three-run homer to right field, Bartolacci’s second home run of the season.
Moravian scored once in the top of the third inning to extend the lead to 8-0. Shea walked with one out and stole second base. Huber then hit an RBI single to score Shea.
The Greyhounds made their lead 11-0 with three runs in the top of the fourth inning. Freshman third baseman Gregg Steinman singled with two outs, and freshman catcher Blake Shortall was hit by a pitch. Junior outfielder Brad Bodine, who had entered the game as a defensive replacement in the third inning, then hit a two-out, three-run home run to left field. The homer was Bodine’s second of the season.
Moravian scored its final run of the contest in the top of the seventh inning. Durso walked to lead off the inning and O’Keefe singled. Bartolacci then hit into a fielder’s choice that had O’Keefe out at second base, but a Susquehanna throwing error on an attempted double play, allowed Durso to score.
The Crusaders scored their lone run of the contest in the bottom of the seventh inning. Jeff Rezach singled with two outs and scored on an RBI double by Justin Portzline.
Steinman led Moravian at the plate with a three-for-five performance while Huber, Durso and Bodine each had two hits. Zach Brigman had two of Susquehanna’s six hits in the contest.
Moravian freshman pitcher Thomas Fenyak earned the victory on the mound for the Greyhounds to improve his record to 4-1 on the season. Fenyak allowed just four hits and two walks while striking out six batters in seven innings of action. Sophomore Luke Skutches worked a perfect eighth inning with two strikeouts while junior Andrew DeLio (Parsippany, NJ/Parsippany) gave up one run on two hits with one strikeout in an inning of action.

Moravian opened its 2009 home season with a
9-0, six-inning non-conference victory over Baptist Bible College in the first
game of a doubleheader at Blue & Grey Field.
The Greyhounds jumped out to a 2-0 lead in
the bottom of the first inning of the first game. Freshman outfielder Olivia Evanko (Nazarteth, PA/Nazareth) was hit by a pitch with one out. After
the second out of the inning, senior first baseman Sheri Bieniek (Lumberton, NJ/Rancocas Valley) connected on a two-run homer down the left
field line, Bieniek’s
first home run of the season and the 13th of her career.
Moravian added a run in the bottom of the
third inning for a 3-0 lead. Evanko led off with a triple and scored on an RBI sacrifice
fly to right field by senior pitcher Maria
DeBonis (Nazareth, PA/Notre Dame).
The Greyhounds pushed two runs home in the
bottom of the fourth inning to expand the lead to 5-0. Sophomore third
baseman Maura Agnew (Doylestown, PA/Lansdale Catholic) drew a walk to lead off the inning before
stealing second and moving to third on a wild pitch. Freshman designated
player Jenna Carmon (Flemington, NJ/Hunterdon Central) also walked and stole second base.
Sophomore shortstop Stephanie Falzarano (South
Plainfield, NJ/South Plainfield) followed with a two-RBI single up the middle scoring Agnew and Carmon.
Moravian made its lead 7-0 in the bottom of
the fifth inning with two more runs. Senior catcher Deanna Mangieri (Pleasantville, NY/Byram
Hills) hit a one-out

beat the throw home. Senior second baseman Katie Agnew (Doylestown,
PA/Lansdale Catholic) then drove in Boyle with an RBI single.
The Greyhounds would institute the NCAA
eight-run rule with two runs in the bottom of the sixth inning. DeBonis led off
the inning with a single up the middle. Sophomore pinch hitter Jennifer Schmitt (Mendham, NJ/Mendham HS) then finished off the game with a two-run
home run to left centerfield, her first collegiate homer.
Moravian had an 11-3 advantage in hits in the
game with Mangieri
the only player in the game to get more than one hit, going two-for-three.
DeBonis
allowed three hits and two walks in the circle for the Greyhounds while
striking out a season high 11 batters to move to 4-2 on the season with her
first shutout of the year.
The Greyhounds swept their first doubleheader
of the season, defeating Baptist Bible College, 13-0 in five innings, in the
second game of a twinbill at Blue & Grey Field.
Moravian would once again jump out to a 2-0
lead in the bottom of the first inning. Senior designated player Deanna Mangieri
singled with two outs and stole second base. Senior catcher Sheri Bieniek
then connected on her second homer of the day, another two-run shot, and this
one to left field.
The Greyhounds extended their lead to 7-0
with five runs in the bottom of the second inning. Sophomore outfielder Amanda Paulus (Easton, PA/Easton) tripled with one out and scored on an RBI
single by Maura Agnew. After
the second out of the inning, Maura
Agnew stole second base before sophomore shortstop Stephanie Falzarano reached on a Baptist
Bible error that allowed Maura Agnew
to score. Freshman outfielder Olivia
Evanko then singled to move Falzarano to third base before Evanko and Falzarano pulled
off a double steal allowing Falzarano to score. Evanko would move to third on a
wild pitch and score on an RBI single by Mangieri. Mangieri would
steal second again and scored on an RBI single by Bieniek for the final run of the
inning.
Moravian pushed two runs home in the bottom
of the third inning for a 9-0 lead. Freshman third baseman Katie Lynn (Carbondale, PA/Carbondale) singled with one out and moved to third on a double by freshman second
baseman Jennifer Carmon (Flemington, NJ/Hunterdon Central). Falzarano followed with a
two-RBI single scoring Lynn and Carmon before Falzarano was thrown out at second
base on the play.
The Greyhounds finished off the scoring with
four runs in the bottom of the fourth inning. Junior third baseman Kelly Maressa (Allentown, PA/William Allen) led off the inning with a double and scored
on an RBI double from Bieniek.
Freshman outfielder Tessa Shifflet (Williamsport,
PA/Williamsport) had a single before sophomore first baseman Jennifer Schmitt single to load the bases. After Bieniek was
thrown out at the plate on a fielder’s choice, Lynn hit an RBI single to score Shifflet. Carmon then had a two-RBI double to
score sophomore outfielder Megan Boyle (South Plainfield, NJ/South Plainfield) and Schmitt.
Moravian had all 19 hits in the game with Bieniek going
three-for-three with four RBIs. Falzarano, Mangieri, Lynn
and Carmon all had two hits for the
Greyhounds.
Sophomore pitcher Elizabeth Python (Huntington
Station, NY/Walt Whitman) and freshman pitcher Jennifer
Gonzalez (Annandale, NJ/North
Hunterdon) combined on a
perfect game for Moravian in the circle, the second combined no-hitter in
school history. Python tossed four
innings with one strikeout while Gonzalez
struck out all three batters she faced in the top of the fifth inning.
Moravian, currently ranked 25th in the
nation, opened the Salisbury Sea Gull Classic at the Henry S. Parker Complex
with a 2-1 eight-inning loss to Kean (NJ) University.
Moravian took a 1-0 lead in the top of the
fifth inning on a solo home run from sophomore outfielder Amanda Paulus, her first homer of the
season.
The Cougars tied the game in the bottom of
the seventh inning on an RBI single from Cassie Shotwell
that allowed Allison Lizzi to score on an error in
the Moravian outfield. Lizzi had reached base
on the first Moravian error of the inning with one out.
The teams began using the international
tiebreaker in the top of the eighth inning with a runner on second base but the
Greyhounds were unable to score. Kean would score the winning on a
suicide squeeze bunt by Nikki Castagno that scored Melissa Dietrich, who
started the inning at second.
Moravian had a 7-4 advantage in hits with Paulus going
two-for-three and seniors pitcher Maria DeBonis and first baseman Sheri Bieniek
were both two-for-four.
DeBonis
suffered the loss for the Greyhounds despite striking out ten batters in
seven-plus innings of action. She allowed just four hits, a walk and two
unearned runs. Courtney Smyth earned the win for Kean, allowing just one
run on seven hits with one strikeout.
In a battle of top 25 teams, 21st ranked York
College of Pennsylvania held off a seventh-inning rally by 25th ranked Moravian
for a 5-4 win at the Salisbury Sea Gull Classic played at the Henry S. Parker
Complex.
The Spartans would take a 1-0 lead in the top
of the second inning on an RBI single from Kelly Smith. York pushed its lead to
3-0 with a pair of runs in the top of the fourth inning. Julie Norris led
off the inning with a solo home run while Sam Koehl
had an RBI single that scored Smith, who had reached on a Moravian error.
The Greyhounds would score twice in the
bottom of the fourth inning to pull within 3-2. Senior outfielder Erica Klepeisz
singled with two outs, and sophomore outfielder Amanda Paulus
followed with a single. Senior catcher Deanna Mangieri
then hit an RBI double to score both Klepeisz and Paulus.
The Spartans scored a pair of unearned runs
in the top of the sixth inning on a Moravian throwing error on a ground ball by
Koehl that would have been the third out of the
inning.
Moravian scored once in the bottom of the
sixth to make the score 5-3 York. Senior pitcher/designated player Maria DeBonis
and senior first baseman Sheri Bieniek had back-to-back doubles to lead off the
inning.
The Greyhounds scored again in the bottom of
the seventh inning to get within a run; however, Moravian left the bases
loaded. Freshman second baseman Jennifer
Carmon hit a one-out double but was out on an interference play two batters
later when she ran into the shortstop fielding a ground ball by freshman
outfielder Olivia Evanko.
Sophomore shortstop Stephanie Falzarano, who had an infield single after Carmon’s hit, scored on an error on a
ball hit by Bieniek.
Moravian held a 9-7 advantage in hits with Carmon going two-for-three and Falzarano going
two-for-four.
DeBonis took
the loss for the Greyhounds, allowing five runs, just two earned, on seven hits
and six walks with three strikeouts in 6 1/3 innings of action. Sophomore
Elizabeth Python tossed the final
two outs with one strikeout.
The 25th-ranked Greyhounds opened the second
day of competition at the Salisbury Sea Gull Invitational with a 9-1,
five-inning victory over King's College at the Henry S. Parker Complex.
Moravian took a 1-0 lead in the top of the
first inning. Sophomore shortstop Stephanie
Falzarano drew a walk to lead off the game and
moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by freshman outfielder Olivia Evanko. Senior designated
player Maria DeBonis
followed with an RBI double to score Falzarano.
The Monarchs tied the game in the bottom of
the first inning. Abbey Knoblauch drew a walk to lead off the inning, one
of four walks by King’s in the inning, and she scored on an RBI bases loaded
walk by Christie Parfitt.
Moravian would take the lead for good in the
top of the second inning with three runs for a 4-1 advantage. Freshman
second baseman Jennifer Carmon hit a
one out single and moved to second on a two-out single by Falzarano. Evanko then
connected on an RBI single to score Carmon
before DeBonis
hit a two-RBI single scoring Falzarano and Evanko. DeBonis was eventually thrown out at the plate on a single
by senior first baseman Sheri Bieniek.
The Greyhounds added a run in the top of the
third inning for a 5-1 lead. Senior outfielder Erica Klepeisz singled with two outs and
moved to second on a single from Carmon.
Sophomore third baseman Maura Agnew
then hit an RBI single to right field scoring Klepeisz.
Moravian pushed its lead to 7-1 in the top of
the fourth inning. DeBonis singled with one out and Bieniek followed with a two-run
homer to left centerfield. The home run was the third of the season for Bieniek and the
15th of her career.
The Greyhounds added two runs in the top of
the fifth inning for a 9-1 lead and to institute the NCAA eight-run rule after
five innings. Carmon singled
with one out before scoring on a two-out RBI double by Falzarano. Evanko would
push Falzarano
home with an RBI single.
Moravian finished the contest with a 14-1
advantage in hits. Carmon was
three-for-three with a pair of runs scored while DeBonis was three-for-four with
two RBIs. Falzarano,
Evanko and
Bieniek
each added two hits with Falzarano scoring three runs and Evanko and Bieniek each adding two RBIs.
Sophomore Elizabeth Python improved to 3-1 in the circle for the Greyhounds
with her third straight win. Python allowed one run on one hit and four
walks while striking out four batters.
Moravian, currently ranked 25th in the
nation, finished its trip to the Salisbury Sea Gull Invitational with a 2-2
record after defeating SUNY Plattsburgh, 4-2, in the team's final game at the
Henry S. Parker Complex.
SUNY Plattsburgh jumped out to a 2-0 lead in
the top of the first inning. Erin Jamieson drew a one-out walk and
Danielle Gjergji followed with an infield
single. After a double steal, Amy Wood hit a two-RBI double.
The Greyhounds answered with a run in the
bottom half of the first inning to cut the Cardinals’ lead to 2-1. Senior
pitcher Maria DeBonis
singled with an out and moved to second on a fielder’s choice by senior first
baseman Sheri Bieniek
that had freshman outfielder Olivia Evanko thrown out at third base. Senior catcher Deanna Mangieri
then connected on an RBI double scoring DeBonis.
Moravian would tie the game at 2-2 in the
bottom of the second inning. Freshman second baseman Jennifer Carmon had a one-out single and moved to second on a
ground out by sophomore third baseman Maura
Agnew. Falzarano
then an RBI single to score Carmon.
The Greyhounds scored twice in the bottom of
the fourth inning to earn the victory. Agnew led off with a single while sophomore shortstop Stephanie Falzarano
reached on a Plattsburgh error while trying to put down a sacrifice bunt.
Evanko
would get a sacrifice bunt down before DeBonis walked to load the bases. Bieniek followed with an RBI
sacrifice fly to score Agnew and Falzarano moved
to third on the play. During the next at-bat, DeBonis got into an intentional
rundown on a stolen base attempt that allowed Falzarano to score an insurance
run before DeBonis
was tagged out.
Moravian finished the game with a 10-4
advantage in hits. Falzarano and sophomore outfielder Amanda Paulus were each two-for-three in
the game.
DeBonis
improved to 5-4 in the circle for the Greyhounds, allowing two runs on four
hits and a walk with seven strikeouts.

Women’s Tennis -- 4-4
(Landmark Conference 0-0)
The Greyhounds dropped their second straight match to open the spring season, falling to Wilkes University, 5-4, in non-conference action. The Colonels had a 2-1 lead after doubles action with Moravian earning a point from an 8-6 victory by freshman Jami Fein (Blue Bell, PA/Wissahickon) and senior Dyana Swan (Branchburg, NJ/Somerville) at first doubles. Fein was the first to finish in singles action, winning at first singles to tie the match at 2-2. Wilkes would win the next three singles matches that completed to earn the team victory. Freshmen Alexandra Hay (East Stroudsburg, PA/East Stroudsburg South) and Anna Meola (Willow Grove, PA/Upper Moreland) each won their singles matches in three sets at fifth and sixth singles, respectively, to close out the match.
Men’s Tennis -- 5-2

Moravian opened its 2009 home season with an 8-1
non-conference victory over rival Muhlenberg College at Hoffman Courts.
The
Greyhounds jumped out to a 3-0 lead by sweeping the doubles action for the
second time this season. Junior Ian
Box (Charlestown, MA/The Rivers School) and sophomore Doug Morrow (Coopersburg,
PA/Southern Lehigh) won 8-2 at first doubles while freshmen Kevin Holze (Bayside,
NY/St. Francis Prep) and Drew Shreter (Moorestown, NJ/Moorestown) also won 8-2 at
second doubles. Junior Chandler
Forman (Plymouth, MA/Plymouth) and sophomore Thomas Turcich (Haddon Township, NJ/Haddon
Township) won 8-3 at third doubles.
Moravian won
the top five singles flights for the victory. Morrow won in straight sets at first singles while Box won in straight sets at second
singles and Holze
won in two sets at third singles. Shreter posted a straight sets win at fourth singles to
remain undefeated on the season at 13-0 while Forman won in three sets at fifth singles.
