Women’s Volleyball – 3-1 (Landmark Conference 0-0)

Last Week – Defeated $Alvernia College, 3-0; Defeated $SUNY Institute of Technology, 3-0; Lost to $Richard Stockton College, 3-0; Lost to $Muhlenberg College, 3-0.  $Sixth Annual Greyhound Premiere Invitational

This Week – Wed., Sept. 3rd at DeSales University, 7:00 p.m.; Fri. & Sat., Sept. 5th & 6th at Muhlenberg College Tournament. 

 

            Moravian opened the 2008 season with a 25-11, 25-16, 25-13 victory over Alvernia College in the first match of the 6th Annual Greyhound Premiere Invitational in Johnston Hall. Senior outside hitter Stephanie Struble (Hampton, NJ/Voorhees) led the Greyhounds with nine kills, nine digs and two service aces while freshman outside hitter Katie Moquete (Midland Park, NJ/Midland Park) had eight kills, seven digs and a pair of blocks in her first collegiate match. Sophomore right side hitter Molly DuVall (Sewell, NJ/Washington Township) had six kills and three service aces for Moravian while sophomore middle hitter Mary King (Paramus, NJ/Paramus) added five kills. Sophomore middle hitter Christine Reeser (Telford, PA/Christopher Dock) had three kills and four blocks for Moravian while sophomore setter Christine Poole (Long Valley, NJ/West Morris Central) had 20 assists and five service aces for the Greyhounds. Sophomore libero Katie Kercher (Whitehall, PA/Whitehall) had eight digs and four service aces in her first action for Moravian while freshman setter Kristin Hannings (Levittown, PA/Pennsbury) had eight assists and a pair of service aces.

 

            The Greyhounds advanced to the championship bracket of the 6th Annual Greyhound Premiere Invitational with a 25-18, 25-17, 25-14 victory over SUNY Insititute of Technology in the final match of pool play. Freshman outside hitter Katie Moquete paced Moravian with a match high 13 kills to go with nine digs. Sophomore right side hitter Molly DuVall added nine kills, seven digs and a pair of blocks while sophomore middle hitter Mary King had six kills, three blocks and a pair of service aces in the Greyhound win. Senior outside hitter Stephanie Struble added five kills, seven digs, two blocks and two service aces while sophomore setter Christine Poole had 18 digs. Freshman setter Kristin Hannings had nine assists while sophomore libero Katie Kercher had nine digs for Moravian

 

            Moravian suffered its first loss of the season, falling to Richard Stockton College of New Jersey, 25-23, 25-15, 25-14 in the first round of the championship bracket at the 6th Annual Greyhound Premiere Invitational in Johnston Hall. Freshman outside hitter Katie Moquete and sophomore middle hitter Mary King each had five kills to lead the Greyhounds. Senior outside hitter Stephanie Struble had three kills and 15 digs for Moravian while freshman setter Kristin Hannings had ten assists, eight digs and a pair of service aces. Sophomore right side hitter Molly DuVall had eight digs, two kills and two blocks for Moravian.

 

            The Greyhounds dropped their second straight match and finished in third place in the championship bracket of the 6th Annual Greyhound Premiere Invitational with a 25-15, 30-25, 25-17 loss to Muhlenberg College. Freshman outside hitter Katie Moquete led Moravian with 11 kills, eight digs and two blocks while sophomore middle hitter Mary King added seven kills and four blocks. Senior outside hitter Stephanie Struble, who was named to the All-Tournament Team, had five kills, nine digs and a pair of service aces for the Greyhounds while sophomore right side hitter Molly DuVall added a team high 14 digs. Sophomore libero Katie Kercher had 11 digs in the match for Moravian while freshman setter Kristin Hannings had 19 assists and ten digs. Sophomore setter Christine Poole had four service aces and four assists.

This Week – Sat., Sept. 6th at Husky Invitational, Bloomsburg University, Bloomsburg, PA, 5:45 p.m.

 

            The Moravian men's cross country team began the 2008 season with a fourth place finish at the 2008 Lehigh Valley Championships hosted on the Goodman Campus of Lehigh University. The Greyhounds had a team score of 104 points while the host Mountain Hawks won the meet with a score of 17 points. Sophomore Connor Skutches (Bethlehem, PA/Liberty) led Moravian with a time of 27:24.2 on the 8,000-meter course that placed him 24th of 57 runners in the race. Freshman Matthew Lutcza (Dingmans Ferry, PA/Delaware Valley) was 27th in a time of 27:52.3 while freshman Zach Rivenbark (Center Valley, PA/Southern Lehigh) was 30th in 27:56.4. Junior Steve DeFazio (Branchburg, NJ/Somerville) took 36th place with a time of 28:44.5 while freshman Pete Rovtar (Basking Ridge, NJ/Ridge) rounded out the Greyhounds top five with a 42nd place finish in 29:22.5. Junior Tim Betz (Havertown, PA/Haverford) was 43rd for the Greyhounds in 29:36 while junior Steve Parisi (Kunkletown, PA/Pleasant Valley) took 46th in 29:50.8. Freshman Steve Ambrosi (Parsippany, NJ/Parsippany Hills) was 49th in his first collegiate race with a time of 30:47.2 while sophomore Jacob Tazik (Wyomissing, PA/Wyomissing) placed 52nd in 31:36.1. Also running for Moravian were senior John McCullough (Levittown, PA/Conwell-Egan), placing 56th in 32:53.1, and freshman Jonathan Gutierrez (Allentown, PA/Dieruff) finishing 57th in 33:15.6.

Women’s Soccer – 1-1 (Landmark Conference 0-0)

Last Week – Defeated %Stevens Institute of Technology, 2-1 (2ot); Lost to %Swarthmore College, 3-0.  % 13th Annual Swat Kick Classic, Swarthmore, PA.

This Week – Sat., Sept. 6th vs. Smith College, 11:00 a.m.; Sun., Sept. 7th vs. Marywood University, 2:30 p.m.  ^Wilkes University Tournament at Wilkes University.

 

            The Moravian College women’s soccer team opened the 2008 season with a 2-1 double-overtime victory over Stevens Institute of Technology in the first day of the 13th Swat Kick Classic hosted by Swarthmore College. The Greyhounds took a 1-0 lead in the 20th minute when junior forward Alessandra Valdetara (Butler, NJ/Butler) netted an unassisted goal. The Ducks would tie the match on an unassisted goal from Salme Cook in the 56th minute. Freshman forward Arielle Caldas (Cherry Hills, NJ/Cherry Hill West) broke the scoreless tie in the 107th minute when she put a pass from Valdetara in the back of the net on a breakaway on the right side of the box for her first collegiate goal. Stevens Tech had a 29-6 advantage in shots while both teams had three corner kicks. Moravian senior goalie Caitlin Corrigan (Perkasie, PA/Pennridge) made 11 saves for her 38th career win, just one shy of tying the school record.

 

Sophomore defender Elizabeth Mills scored a pair of goals to lead host Swarthmore College to a 3-0 victory over Moravian in the second day of the 13th Annual Swat Kick Classic. The garne would take a 1-0 lead in the 17th minute when sophomore forward Kelsey Cline scored on a corner kick by sophomore defender/midfielder Hanna Purkey.  Sophomore midfielder Sarah Reece directed Purkey’s corner kick to Cline to pick up an assist on the play.  Mills would give Swarthmore a 2-0 lead in the 40th minute when she put home a pass from sophomore midfielder Megan Colombo. Mills netted her second goal of the match in the 63rd minute off of a pass from sophomore forward Amy Langdon.  Swarthmore had a 25-8 advantage in shots in the match including a 15-2 edge in the first half, and the Garnet had an 11-3 edge in corner kicks with a 7-0 advantage in the first 45 minutes. Senior Lauren Walker started in goal for Swarthmore and had one save in just over 68 minutes of action while freshman Marie Mutryn had two saves in the remainder of the match.  Moravian senior goalie Caitlin Corrigan had two stops in 71 and a half minutes of action for the Greyhounds while sophomore goalie Sarah Halpin (Downingtown, PA/Downingtown West) made three saves in the final 18 and a half minutes. Corrigan, junior forward Alessandra Valdetara, who had three of the Greyhounds' eight shots, and junior defender Terri Roberts (Danville, PA/Danville) represented Moravian on the All-Tournament Team.

            Moravian opened the 2008 season with a 2-1 victory over Neumann College in the first day of the Moravian/Muhlenberg College Tournament Friday afternoon on the HUB Quad. The Greyhounds jumped out to a 1-0 in the fifth minute when freshman forward Taylor Molinaro (Scotch Plains, NJ/Scotch Plains-Fanwood) found the back of the net off a pass from junior defender Gary Grimes (Howell, NJ/Christian Brothers Academy). Moravian extended its lead to 2-0 in the 32nd minute when junior midfielder Evan Outlaw (Zion Grove, PA/Pleasant Valley) put a pass in from freshman forward Matt McFarlane (Langhorne, PA/Father Judge). The Knights would pull within a goal in the 72nd minute when freshman midfielder Zach Sell put a crossing pass from Andrew Rajmondo.  Moravian had a 13-12 edge in shots while both teams attempted three corner kicks. Moravian senior goalie Chris Nederostek (Lansdale, PA/Christopher Dock) made six saves and the Greyhounds had one team save in the victory.

 

            The Greyhounds dropped a 3-1 decision to William Paterson University on the HUB Quad in the second day of the Moravian/Muhlenberg Tournament. The Pioneers jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the 19th minute when freshman midfielder Hussein Jaafar put a pass from sophomore forward Julian Valerio in the back of the net.  Sophomore defender Joe Strawman extended William Paterson’s lead to 2-0 in the 59th minute with an assist from Valerio, and the Pioneers would push their lead to 3-0 in the 89th minute on an unassisted goal by sophomore forward Daniel Sanchez. Moravian’s only goal of the match came with just 38 seconds left in the contest when junior midfielder Evan Outlaw netted his second goal of the season off of a pass from junior defender/midfielder Blake Ritchey (Harleysville, PA/Souderton). William Paterson had a 23-10 advantage in shots and a 6-4 edge in corner kicks on the contest.  Pioneer junior goalie Dan Pergallo needed just one save for the win.  Moravian senior keeper Chris Nederostek had eight saves in goal.

Field Hockey – 0-1 (Landmark Conference 0-0)

This Week – Wed., Sept. 3rd at DeSales University, 4:00 p.m.; Sat., Sept. 6th at FDU-Florham, 1:00 p.m.

 

            Moravian opened up the 2008 season with a 4-3 loss (3-1 on penalty strokes) at Wilkes University after the two teams were tied at 3-3 at the end of regulation and through two overtime periods. The Colonels jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the third minute when Devon McKay scored off of a pass from Alyssa Koncelik. Moravian would tie the match in the 17th minute on the first goal of the season by sophomore forward Vita Ranella (Clarks Green, PA/Abington Heights) on a penalty corner set up by junior midfielder Damara Varney (Allentown, PA/Allentown Central Catholic) Sophomore forward Becky Renaldo (Allentown, PA/Allentown Central Catholic) would give the Greyhounds a 2-1 lead with a goal in the 33nd minute off of a pass from Ranella. Moravian would build its lead to 3-1 midway through the second half when junior forward Kayla Carson (Leesport, PA/Wyomissing) found the back of the cage in the 56th minute on a pass from junior forward Jillian Pagliei (Ivyland, PA/Council Rock North). The Colonels would respond with a pair of goals in the final 4:37 of regulation to force the extra sessions.  Jennifer Keegan scored off of a pass from Lindsey Raleigh in the 66th minute before Koncelik tied the match in the 68th minute. After 30 minutes of scoreless play in the two overtime sessions, each team attempted four penalty strokes to determine the winner of the match.  For the Greyhounds, Ranella was the only player to score in the stroke-off while McKay, Britanny Sines and Alyson Paulauskas each scored for Wilkes to earn the win.  The Colonels had a 28-7 advantage in shots and a 12-7 edge in penalty corners in the match. Greyhound sophomore goalie Maura Acox (Old Bridge, NJ/St. John Vianney) recorded a career high 15 saves in the match.

            The Moravian College women's cross country team opened the 2008 season with a fifth place finish at the 2008 Lehigh Valley Championships run on the Goodman Campus of Lehigh University. The Greyhounds posted a team score of 128 points, just one point behind Muhlenberg Colege while the host Mountain Hawks won the meet with 27 points. Freshman Kristina Ruggiero (Cedar Grove, NJ/Cedar Grove) led the Greyhounds on the 6,000-meter course with a time of 24:25 to place 32nd of 60 runners. Sophomore Tara Chiarella (Hallstead, PA/Montrose Area) was 33rd in 24:31 while freshman Hailey Neff (Lehighton, PA/Lehighton) took 38th in a time of 25:00. Senior Kelly Williams (Tafton, PA/Wallenpaupack) was 43rd in the race in 25:46 while freshman Katie Engwall (Columbia, NJ/North Warren) rounded out the Greyhound top five with a 48th place finish in 26:26. Senior Stephanie Miller (Easton, PA/Easton) was 50th overall in a time of 26:38 while freshman Megan Hallowell (Bethlehem, PA/Liberty) was 53rd in 27:03. Sophomore Kaleen Holden (Scranton, PA/Bishop Hannan) ran a time of 27:28 for the Greyhounds to finish 57th while senior Naomie Kachel (Shillington, PA/Governor Mifflin) was 58th in 27:40. Sophomore Sydni Wisniewski (Orlando, FL/Winter Park) was 59th in her first collegiate cross country race in a time of 28:07 while freshman Katie Pritchett (Pottsville, PA/Pottsville) was 60th in 32:53.

            The Moravian College golf team will open its 2008-09 season on Wednesday, September 17th at the Albright and Delaware Valley College Tri-Match at Berkshire Country Club.
