2024 Cancelled: Engaging Nepal

Course held Fall II 2023

Embark on a 10-day journey through Nepal, starting in Kathmandu. Explore the rich cultural heritage of the city, visiting UNESCO World Heritage Sites, ancient palaces, and Buddhist stupas. Journey to serene Sundarijal, hike to Chisapani for breathtaking mountain views, and trek through national park forests to Nagarkot. Witness a mesmerizing sunrise over Mount Everest, trek to Changunarayan, and end the day with a celebration dinner featuring Nepalese folk songs and cultural dances. Finally, conclude your adventure with two days of exploration in Kathmandu before flying back to the US.

All the landmarks mentioned in this itinerary will be visited. Some changes may be made in the order they will be visited depending upon the weather.

Day 1: Travel from the US to Kathmandu, Nepal

Day 2: Heritage tour of Old Kathmandu City (a UNESCO World Heritage Site, the royal palace of the former Kathmandu Kingdom), Patan City's ancient palaces, temples and shrines and Swoyambhunath Stupa, one of the holiest, oldest Buddhist stupas in Nepal with a panoramic view of the city.

Day 3: Heritage tour of the 5th century Pashupatinath Temple complex, the world's largest stupa, Bouddhanath, and Namobuddha Monastery learning about the rituals and Buddhist ways of life.

Day 4: Sightseeing of ancient UNESCO World Heritage site Bhaktapur, local Village Gundu to visit a sustainable organic farm and a village hike and drive back to Kathmandu.

Day 5: Drivefrom Kathmandu to serene Sundarijal and hike to Chisapani (Height: 2200m), a Sherpa village with grand views of the mountains. Overnight will be in a teahouse.

Day 6: Trek 5-6 hours through the national park forest to Nagarkot (Height: 2156m). Lunch in Chauki Bhanjyang or Jhule and end the trek with a sunset view of the Himalayan peaks. Overnight will be in Nagarkot.

Day 7: Nagarkot sunrise tour, seeing the peak of Mount Everest, and make a four hour trek to Changunarayan, an ethnic Newari town with traditional Nepalese buildings and temples. In the afternoon, travel by vehicle to Kathmandu for a celebratio dinner, cultural dance and Nepalese folk songs.
