On Graduation Day

Saturday, May 9, 2020

9:00 a.m.

Graduating students must bring caps, gowns, and tassels (and any other approved regalia) to the Breidegam Fieldhouse (also known as the Athletic Recreation Center or ARC) by 9:00 a.m. on commencement morning. Bachelor’s degree candidates should wear tassels on the right.

IMPORTANT: Please do not wear shoes with a stiletto heel. A high, thin, heel will rip the turf, sink into the surface, and is potentially dangerous. Besides, no-one wants to trip and fall on commencement day!

The Platform party and Trustees will robe in the Dance Studio. Faculty and administrators will robe in the Performance Center.

All graduating students should go to the check-in table in the lower level of Breidegam Fieldhouse to receive name cards. Cards are used to announce each graduate’s name as the graduate walks across the stage. Cards are color-coded according to degree earned.

9:40 a.m.

The procession starts promptly at 9:40 a.m.  Students arriving too late to be put into proper procession order will process at the end of the line and move toward the stage when fellow students in the same degree program are walking across the stage.

Students, with help from the College and Seminary Marshals, Dr. Craig Atwood, Dr. Michael Bertucci, Dr. Katie Desiderio, Dr. Nicole Tabor, and Dr. Neil Wetzel will form in pairs by order of degree.

Doctoral Degree programs will go first in degree alpha order. Then Masters Degree programs, and then Bachelor’s Degrees in alpha order – B.A., B.F.A, B.Mus., etc. Degree programs will be posted along the wall of the ARC for guidance.

Graduates proceed from the main entrance of the ARC to Makuvek Field. The procession will enter the field, proceed to designated seats, and remain standing until President Grigsby invites all to be seated.

10:00 a.m.

When it is time for the conferring of degrees, Provost Cynthia Kosso will go to the podium and request that all doctoral degree candidates rise and be presented for degrees. All students receiving doctoral degrees should stand. Following President Grigsby’s statement of conferral immediately after, doctoral candidates will be seated again. This process will be repeated again with the Master’s degree candidates and then the Bachelor’s candidates. Each group should stand when indicated and following the President's statement, be seated again.

When Dr. Kosso rises again, the first row will be instructed by staff at the stage ramp to stand and proceed to the stage ramp on the right, followed in order by remaining rows. Students must have name cards ready to hand to the announcer upon reaching the stage. Dr. Christopher Jones will announce the names of doctoral and master’s candidates. Dr. Sarah Johnson will announce the names of the bachelor’s candidates. Once a student’s name is announced, the student should cross the platform to shake hands and receive a scroll from President Grigsby. Students will then proceed to the other end of the stage, turn to face the audience, and be hooded. Finally, each student should walk to the far stage ramp and receive a diploma cover on the way down, after which the student will return to the same seat and immediately sit down.

Some students will receive specific awards, which are listed in the program. At the appropriate time, those students will be asked to form a line on the right-hand ramp in the order that names appear in the program. As each award recipient's name is called, the recipient will cross the platform to receive the award from President Grigsby, and then return to the same seat and immediately sit down.

All who have received prizes and awards earlier in the term will then be asked to stand and be recognized in place.

At the conclusion of the ceremony, the academic procession, under the direction of the marshals, will leave the field, turn east on Locust St. and proceed to the 1742 Circle. The platform party will leave first, followed by the faculty, and then the graduates.

Immediately following Commencement, refreshments will be served on the PPHAC patio (weather permitting) or in the Sally Breidegam Miksiewicz Center for Health Sciences atrium.

Many academic departments have a designated meeting area where they will convene about 20 minutes after the reception begins. This is a wonderful opportunity to families to meet faculty. Check back here shortly for a list of meeting areas.
