Parents' Guide to Commencement
Sunday, April 30
AWARDS CEREMONY FOR OUTSTANDING STUDENTS: 2:00 p.m. in Foy Lecture Hall, South Campus. Academic prizes are awarded, students in honor societies and students conducting honors projects will be recognized. Parents of students winning specific academic awards are sent an invitation via mail. Refreshments follow the ceremony, which lasts approximately 45 minutes. There is no limit to the number of people who may attend. Doors will open at 1:15 p.m. Guests can park under the Hill-to-Hill bridge across the street from Lot U. Wednesday - Friday, May 10-12
SENIOR SEND-OFF: A brochure describing the events and a registration form will be sent to parents in mid-March, and to each graduating senior at his or her campus mail box, unless we have been notified to send it elsewhere. You may also register and pay for all Senior Send-Off events through moravian.edu/commencement/senior-sendoff. Friday, May 12
COMMENCEMENT REHEARSAL: 10:00 a.m. in Johnston Hall - There will be a commencement rehearsal for all graduates. This will take approximately 1.5 hours.
SENIOR BRUNCH AND SLIDESHOW: 11:30 a.m. in Marketplace Café. This brunch is for undergraduate students who have registered for Senior Send-Off events.
BACCALAUREATE: 5:00 p.m. in Central Moravian Church. This service will last approximately one hour and is open to graduates, families, and guests. Wearing their caps and gowns, graduates will assemble in Foy Hall at 4:15 p.m. (or inside the church if it is raining). The doors of Central Moravian Church will be opened to parents and guests at 4:15 p.m. There is no limit to the number of guests attending. Once seats in the sanctuary are filled, guests will be directed to seats in the balcony area.
DISABILITY ACCESS: It is recommended that people with mobility issues enter Central Moravian Church at the back of the church, where there are no steps. Directions: Coming down Main Street from the North Campus of the College, cars should make a left on Market Street and turn at the next right onto Heckewelder Place. After discharging passengers, cars should continue to Church Street (which is one-way, therefore you must turn right). Turn left on Main Street to go to the parking lot.
PARKING: Parking will be available under the Hill-to-Hill Bridge, which is at the bottom of Main Street, below the church, on your right and across from Parking Lot U.
SHUTTLE SERVICE: You may park your car in one of the North campus parking lots and take the shuttle bus to Central Moravian Church. (A map showing campus parking lots is available on-line at moravian.edu/campusmaps.) Buses will depart from the HUB entrance beginning at 3:30 p.m. and return there after the service.
SENIOR SOIREE AND DINNER DANCE: Immediately following Baccalaureate there will be a reception, dinner and dance in Johnston Hall for graduates, their families, and guests. Please see moravian.edu/commencement/senior-sendoff or the Senior Send-Off brochure for more information. Reservations are required by the deadline listed. This is a very popular event and tickets sell out quickly. The dance is not a formal affair, but people usually dress as if they were going to a nice restaurant.
Saturday, May 13
CAP AND GOWN BUFFET BREAKFAST: A breakfast will be held for graduates and their guests between 7:00 and 9:30 a.m. Reservations and payment are required for this event. Information and registration is on the website Information and registration is on this webpage.
COMMENCEMENT CEREMONY: 10:00 a.m. on the soccer field behind the HUB (weather permitting). Graduates assemble and robe in the ARC in Johnston Hall beginning at 9:00 a.m. The processional will begin promptly at 9:40 a.m. The ceremony lasts approximately 2 to 2 ½ hours. Seating is provided and there is no limit to the number of guests who may be invited, provided the event is outside. See “rain passes” section below.
RAIN PASSES: In the event of heavy rain or thunderstorms, the limited seating capacity in Johnston Hall will necessitate admission rain passes for Commencement. Each graduate will receive 2 passes with his or her cap and gown. If more passes are needed, students should ask fellow graduates for any unused passes. There will be no other way for graduates to obtain extra passes.
Unless there is a downpour or thunder and lightning, the Commencement ceremony generally continues outside. If rain is expected, please come prepared (umbrella, raincoat, etc.). Should the ceremony be held indoors, there will also be closed circuit, large screen viewing in the HUB and other various campus locations. Ushers will be on hand to direct guests. These locations will be a much more comfortable environment for young children and the elderly, who will have easy access to rest rooms and refreshments. For those who cannot come to campus, there will be a live telecast which will begin 15 minutes before the ceremony. If you are unsure whether the ceremony will be held inside or out, please call the Weather Hotline number: 610 625-7995. The location announcement will be posted on Saturday by 7:00 a.m. on Moravian’s website and the hotline.
PARKING: All of the College’s parking lots will be open to guests, although some may be designated as handicapped parking only. Campus police will be available to assist with directions and traffic control. Please leave ample time to find parking and get to commencement.
PEOPLE WITH LIMITED MOBILITY: It is strongly recommended that those with mobility issues be dropped off in the vicinity of the Haupert Union Building (HUB). Drop-off and pick-up will be on W. Laurel St. between Orchard St. and Monocacy St. in the posted area. Handicapped parking will be available in Lots J, K, and where designated on W. Laurel Street between Monocacy and Gessinger Streets. Campus safety officers will help direct you. The campus entrance at Main St. & W. Locust St. will be closed to traffic after 8:30am. Seating for the handicapped is on the HUB portico and is limited to the handicapped person and two others. It is also strongly recommended that those with difficulty walking not attempt to go down the grassy hill on to the soccer field (quad). CLOSED CAPTIONING: The live streaming video of the event will be captioned. Guests watching the video in the provided on-campus locations or live streaming at home will see the text displayed. A separate text-only website is also available, www.moravian.edu/captions, which is a more data-plan-friendly option for people using their own mobile devices.
PHOTOGRAPHS: The College has arranged for a professional photographer to take a picture of each graduate receiving his or her diploma. The company Grad Images will contact you after the ceremony to ask if you would like to purchase the photo.
DVD OF CEREMONY: A professional company will record the entire commencement ceremony and make it available for purchase. Orders may be placed on-line at Orders may be placed on-line.
SALE OF ROSES: Bouquets of roses are available for pre-purchase or cash and carry on commencement day. All proceeds from this sale benefit the Crime Victims Council of the Lehigh Valley, a nonprofit, United Way agency. Orders may be placed on-line at moravian.edu/commencement/order.
RECEPTION: Light refreshments will be served immediately after the ceremony. Tables will be set up on the PPHAC patio (across from the HUB) or, in the event of rain, at various locations in the HUB.
LEGACY RECEPTION: A Moravian legacy is daughter, son, granddaughter, grandson, sister, brother, niece, nephew, or any relative of a Moravian College graduate. Immediately following commencement all legacy graduates are invited to a reception and have a complimentary photo taken with their Moravian alumni family member(s). NEWSPAPER ANNOUNCEMENT: Unless a student has submitted a release form to the Public Relations Department, we cannot send an announcement about his or her graduation to a hometown newspaper. The form is available here. Some newspapers are no longer publishing the names of graduates in print. They do, however, put them on their web site.

NOTE: A letter directing parents to Moravian’s commencement website was sent around mid-March and was based on a computer list of potential graduates. If in doubt about their graduation status, students should verify their qualifications for graduation with the Registrar or the Associate Provost.
