Faculty and administrators -- the Performance Center
IMPORTANT: Please do not wear shoes with a stiletto heel. We have a brand new, beautiful turf field and wish to protect our investment. A high thin heel will rip the turf and sink into the surface, impeding your ability to walk. Besides, no-one wants to trip and fall on their commencement day!
* Robing areas will be locked and patrolled by Campus Safety or Facilities Services personnel during both Baccalaureate and Commencement.
Please arrive at 9:00am in the ARC to be lined up for procession. The procession starts promptly at 9:40am. Students arriving too late to be put into proper procession order will process at the very end of the line and make their way to the stage shortly before their names will be called to receive the appropriate diploma. (Check program for order of names). The procession, with help from Dr. Lori Toedter as Faculty Marshal and Dr. Katie P. Desiderio as Student Marshal, will form in the order as shown on the "Commencement Order of Procession”; this list will be posted on the ARC walls for reference. Graduates proceed from the main entrance of the ARC to the HUB Quadrangle (in the event of rain, from the ARC into Johnston Hall). The procession will enter the field, proceed to designated seats, and remain standing until President Grigsby invites all to be seated.
CONFERRING OF DEGREES
When it is time for the conferring of degrees, Provost Cynthia Kosso will go to the podium and request all bachelor degree candidates to rise to be presented for degrees. All students receiving bachelor’s degrees should stand. Following President Grigsby’s statement of conferral immediately after, candidates will be seated again. Master’s degree candidates will be presented next. Following the President's statement, candidates will be seated again. When Dr. Kosso rises again, the first row will then stand and proceed to the stage ramp on the right, followed in order by remaining rows. Dr. Sarah Johnson will announce the names of candidates. The candidate whose name has just been announced will then cross the platform to shake hands with and receive his/her diploma from President Grigsby. The candidate will then proceed to the other end of the platform, turn to face the audience, and have an academic hood placed over his/her head, after which the candidate will return to his/her seat and immediately sit down. B.A. candidates will receive their degrees first, then B.Mus., B.S., B.S.N., M.A.T, M.B.A., M.Ed., M.H.A., M.S.H.R., and M.S.N. candidates. Some students will be receiving specific awards, which are listed in the program. At the appropriate time, those students will be asked to form a line on the right-hand ramp in the order their names appear in the program. As each award recipient's name is called, the recipient will cross the platform to receive his/her award from President Grigsby, then return to his/her seat. Then all those who have received prizes and awards earlier in the term will be asked to stand and be recognized in place.
At the conclusion of the ceremony, the academic procession, under the direction of Dr. Toedter, will leave the fieldand turn east on Locust St. The platform party will leave first, followed by the faculty, then the graduates.
Immediately following Commencement, refreshments will be served to all participants, their families and friends on the PPHAC patio, or in the event of rain, at various locations in the HUB and/or PPHAC.
