On November 4th, Congresswoman Susan Wild sat down with Moravian College students to discuss reauthorization of the Higher Education Act. It seemed only fitting that Congresswoman Wild, the first woman to represent Pennsylvania’s 7th Congressional District (PA-7) in the United States House of Representatives, would take the time to meet with students from our college, the first college in America to educate women. Wild was elected in the fall of 2018 to represent PA-7, which encompasses all of Lehigh County and Northampton County as well as part of Monroe County. During her term, Wild has been appointed to the House Foreign Affairs Committee, Labor Committee, and the House Education Committee.

Recognizing hunger on our campus, in fall 2018, Moravian College opened Mo’s Cupboard, a resource pantry that provides shelf-stable food as well as toiletries, and dorm and cleaning supplies to Moravian College students in need. The pantry has found a new home in the Student Life Office in the lower level of the HUB and can be accessed any time during HUB hours with a swipe ID. It’s free, private, and available to undergraduate, graduate, and seminary students. Since opening in its new space at the end of August 2019, Mo’s cupboard has been accessed more than 100 times by students in need.

Listening to French songs and analyzing the lyrics, discussing how gestures are used in conversation across cultures, discovering French idioms and expressions—these were among the cultural topics that headlined the conversations—en français—that students enjoyed with Juliette Garcia, a foreign language teaching assistant (FLTA). Garcia is pursing a master’s degree at l’Université Sorbonne Nouvelle in Paris, and she spent the 2018-19 academic year at Moravian College through the Fulbright Program.
