In the 60s women played half-court basketball because full court was considered too strenuous, but lacrosse players wore no protective gear. Student-athlete Christina Grigg Martin '67 was a smoker, and Nancy McKinley Hawkins '69 played multiple sports but didn’t tell her parents, who disapproved of women’s sports. These were just a few of the recollections shared among the 17 student-athlete alumnae who gathered in the HUB on November 10 at a luncheon in honor of their coach of 50 years ago, Chris Wytock Jackson.

Christian Flores Ortiz had been taking college classes for only a month in Puerto Rico when he and his family left the hurricane-damaged island for Bethlehem. On the plane ride over, he hoped that he would be able to enroll at a college in the Lehigh Valley so he could reach his dream of becoming a graphic artist. But he worried it could take some time to find a school to attend and one he could afford.

On Tuesday, November 7, 2017, Moravian College English Alumni returned for the Coffee and Connections networking event to provide words of advice for current English majors and minors. The event took place in the Afterwords Cafe in Reeves Library where the three panelists, Keri Lindenmuth ’16, Courtney Wright-Werner ’06, and Matt Caltabiano ’95 answered questions mediated by Nicole Tabor, associate professor of English.

About 1,300 attendees, half over the age of 55, piled into Johnston Hall at 7 p.m. to listen to one of the two journalists who broke the Watergate scandal. Bernstein, the 2017 Cohen Arts & Lecture Speaker, came to Moravian to speak about past and present journalism, the politics of today’s world, and people’s obligation to their government.

Curious to explore and share the culinary offerings of our ancestors, the Moravian College History Department hosted a Premodern Cook-off on September 26th. The event was organized by four 100-level history classes:
Colonial Latin America, taught by Assistant Professor Sandra Aquilar
Native North America, taught by Associate Professor Jamie Paxton
and two sections England to 1603, taught by Professor Sandy Bardsley

Dr. Frank Kuserk embodied the ideal of a Moravian College professor. He loved his research and his academic discipline, but he always put his students first. He was the kind of man who would selflessly spend so much of his time looking for opportunities for his students. I know because I was one of them. I can proudly say that I credit most of my accomplishments to Dr. Kuserk’s mentoring and guidance.
