My Moravian
February 23, 2018

As a senior, I’ve lived in numerous resident halls on campus. Of course, I have my fair share of stories to tell about each one. Some have been great while others...not so much.

Now, as a commuter for the last semester of my senior year, I have experienced life off-campus. Although ultimately I prefer it to living on-campus, there are a great many things I miss about being an on-campus resident. Speaking from my own experiences, I present a list of pros/cons for all living options available for Moravian students.

It’s the week after Thanksgiving break and you’re still trying to pull yourself out of your food-induced coma. That last small shred of motivation is harder to find than Waldo in a Candy Cane factory. The signs are classic: throbbing headaches, puffy, bloodshot eyes, sweatpants every day-would it even be possible to get a caffeine IV drip?

You’re faced with the End-of-the-Semester Slump. Every college student goes through it, especially with the holidays right around the corner and all you want to do is go Christmas shopping and sleep. But alas, classes beckon and your GPA depends on that final paper or project. But luckily for you, here are a few tips on how to beat it!

The SteelStacks is an iconic symbol in the Lehigh Valley and is easily recognized as one of the most popular tourist destinations in the region. It is located in Southside Bethlehem by the Lehigh River and is next to PBS Studios, ArtsQuest, and the Sands Casino. Locals and tourists alike gather for festivals like MusikFest and Oktoberfest, movies at Frank Banko Alehouse Cinemas, among many other exciting events. However, SteelStacks has a history that only a true Bethlehem local would know and is just one of the many furnaces that used to produce steel for the entire country.

Moravian College is lucky enough to be able to call itself a dog-friendly campus, and students couldn’t be more pleased. Our mascot is furry, four-legged, friendly, and fun - one with which students are able to interact. Imagine trying to pet a grizzly bear or a bengal tiger! But how did Moravian settle on Amos the Greyhound as our mascot? Who came before the current Mo Grigsby that we all know and love? Let’s race back through history to the early beginnings of the hound pack and find out!

Moravian College is proud to offer a total of 30 departments and nearly 50 majors. For a small, liberal arts private college, that’s pretty impressive! Every student who is fully immersed in their major feels a strong connection and bond to their own department. As an English major, I can say for a fact we are a very close-knit community. We all have our quirks, our differences, disagreements of course, but at the end of the day, we can all share a special kind of friendship knowing we are among others like ourselves. Who else can you text for moral support while procrastinating on your Hands-On Learning Assignment? Who else can you unleash your literary angst upon when your professor assigns “Frankenstein” after you’ve read it three times already? And of course, who else can you vent to but other English majors about the pains of being required to write a sonnet? The students involved in the English Department also know, however, that the professors are some of the most caring, compassionate, and intelligent members of the campus community. So what exactly makes the English Department unique? Well, let us, the English majors, introduce you to our community.

Bethlehem, Pa. was officially named the Christmas City in 1937 - for obvious reasons. Internships allow people to gain firsthand experience in a real-life business setting. Every college student knows this and must complete an internship during their college career. Not only will their work benefit the company, business, or organization they’re working for, but it will also benefit the student by providing life experiences working for a business, communication skills, and client, employer, and employee relationships. Internships also increase student networking, which is crucial in setting up potential future employment opportunities. However, beginning the internship process can be daunting. Luckily, there are plenty of ways colleges can help students obtain an internship and keep it stress and worry free! Here are some tips and suggestions for Moravian students to get ahead of the game.

So you don’t believe in ghosts? Living at Moravian College will surely change your mind by the time you graduate! Being the sixth oldest college in America, Moravian is sure to have its fair share of secrets. Before Moravian existed as the liberal arts college we all know and love today, it went through its period of transitions. For example, the Brethren’s House, was converted into a hospital for American soldiers during the Revolutionary War and is rumored to have its resident ghosts. Today, it serves as the music and art building for students, which is where may of the hauntings are said to take place. Another supposedly haunted building located on Moravian’s Priscilla Payne Hurd Campus is Main Hall, which is the all-female dormitory. It originally opened in 1854 as a residence hall for single women, and is said to contain three infamous ghosts: those of a Revolutionary War nurse, a little girl, and a cat. Given the age of some of the buildings along with their history, is it any surprise that hauntings are rumored to have happened here? Listen to some of the stories students have to tell about first-hand encounters with the paranormal or supernatural experiences they’ve had and decide for yourself!
