5 Easy Ways To Stay Green At College
Being at college can be difficult, and not just because of homework and exams. Staying healthy and living a green lifestyle can be challenging when there are French fries, soda, and delicious mozzarella sticks constantly surrounding you. To top it off, your dorm may not have different recycling cans for paper and glass bottles readily available, and it becomes very easy to throw water bottles anywhere besides the actual garbage. However, if you follow these 5 easy tips, staying green at college can be a cinch.
1. Buy a Filter and Canteen
Buy a canteen or thermos that you can fill with water, coffee, or orange juice; this will become key during your college years. They will save you money and purify your water. Personally, I have a Brita water filter, and I would never think of returning to Moravian without it.
2. Bring a Tote Bag for Groceries
If you have a car on campus and plan on going shopping, invest in a tote bag. This will save you form throwing away countless paper and plastic bags after all your late night Wawa trips. As a bonus, you can personalize them to your tastes!
3. Bring a Bike
If you don’t, or can’t, bring a car to campus (and even if you can), think about bringing a bike. Most places around your campus should be within walking distance, but biking can be a great way to get there faster while getting in your workout for the day.
This one should be obvious, especially after all of the Think, Reuse, Recycle campaigns, but it never hurts to hear it again. Recycle! Recycling is a great way to decrease waste and greenhouse gases. Many stores even offer the option of recycled products, so be sure to take advantage.
5. Reduce Water Usage
Turn off the sink when you’re brushing your teeth and learn to take shorter showers (as tempting as a long, hot shower is, you know you should be studying anyway!) Reducing the amount of water you use is a great way to be green and keep the earth clean.
