My Moravian
October 23, 2018
It is announced during halftime at every home football game, “And now, please welcome...the pride of the Keystone State...The Moravian College Marching Band!” The Moravian Marching Band practices for hours every week and performs at football games and parades. I have been a part of the Color Guard for my marching band in high school and as a member of the Moravian College Color Guard, I have had nothing but the best time performing with this incredible band! I have enjoyed working with Dr. Hess, the band director for the Marching Band, and Ciara Hurley and Miles Molerio, the Color Guard instructors. To showcase the hard work that is put into the marching band, I thought I would share my experience practicing our “Classic Rock” marching show for one week before our big performance at the Collegiate Marching Band Festival!

Every internship opportunity presents challenges, but I never expected that as an English major I would find myself working at Precision Roll Grinders, a company that specializes in servicing 500-ton industrial rolls. Over the summer, I worked alongside mechanical engineers in a factory, not performing manual labor and grinding the rolls that are used to create everything from paper towels to the cereal we eat but learning about the process, interviewing workers and writing about the 50-year anniversary of the company.

Nearly five years ago in the spring of 2013, I visited Moravian College as a junior beginning my college search. My aunt went to Moravian, so naturally I wanted to check it out. I’ve seen how successful she is in her life, so I knew this school would be a good choice. I submitted my early-decision application to Moravian College that fall, received my acceptance, and my college search was over. I was going to be a Class of 2018 Greyhound.

Bethlehem, PA is called “The Christmas City” for a reason that is plain and simple: we LOVE our holidays! Walking up Main Street feels like walking through a Christmas wonderland with lights, wreaths, and Christmas trees scattered throughout. Bethlehem hosts a variety of Christmas events and festivals that are open to the public. Moravian College even offers some holiday events of their own to get students into the holiday spirit. To get the full Christmas City experience, I have a few events listed below to check out at Bethlehem during the Christmas Season.

The SteelStacks is an iconic symbol in the Lehigh Valley and is easily recognized as one of the most popular tourist destinations in the region. It is located in Southside Bethlehem by the Lehigh River and is next to PBS Studios, ArtsQuest, and the Sands Casino. Locals and tourists alike gather for festivals like MusikFest and Oktoberfest, movies at Frank Banko Alehouse Cinemas, among many other exciting events. However, SteelStacks has a history that only a true Bethlehem local would know and is just one of the many furnaces that used to produce steel for the entire country.

Heritage Day: what a wonderful day on our campus! Everyone comes together to volunteer at different organizations. When I got to Johnston’s Hall last Wednesday morning I was given a card with my volunteering location: Northeast Middle School.

Ahh the life of a commuter. Whether we are still living at home (me) or are driving to campus from our own apartments or houses, the one thing that connects us all is the trip we have to make every morning to Moravian. After four years I think I have learned a thing or two, and I am here to share my wisdom from the countless hours I’ve spent behind the wheel. Don’t worry, they are not all as painfully obvious as the title.

After writing about primarily food and books for the past few months I thought it would be a nice change of pace to talk about something on campus that is a little more serious. Omicron Delta Kappa (OΔK) is the Leadership Honors Society at Moravian and a club that I am proud to represent as president.

Like most high school seniors, I had really no clue what I wanted to do after graduating. Yes, I wanted to go to school, but did I want to go to school because everyone else was and I have been told since day one that college is what gets you a successful life? As if high school wasn’t stressful enough for me, which was filled with 3 sports, AP and honor classes, having a job, and trying to manage a social life.  To make things worse, there were so many options to narrow down when choosing a college.

Luckily, I had an awesome high school guidance counselor who knew how to help deal with my anxiety. Knowing that I was looking for a small school not far from home, he encouraged me to attend an info session about Moravian College, and the Admissions counselor talked up Moravian so much that I decided I would apply.

In April of 2104, I made the 2-hour drive with my mom to visit Moravian College. It was small, cozy, and not in the middle of nowhere! I sat in Dr. Salter’s class, and I felt like this was my place.  During our Open House visit, my mom saw me eyeing the Army ROTC table but not making the move so she dragged me over to talk to them. My senior year of high school, I was also talking to military recruiters because I had no clue how I would pay for school, since at the time I wanted to be a doctor. Plus, there was always something about the military that grabbed my attention.

Moravian College is full of students from different backgrounds with many different interests. A college this diverse has many clubs to cater to its student's tastes, with Stitches being one of them! Stitches, a crocheting and knitting club, is new to the campus. The club’s president, Emese Jordan, has happily shared some information about the club for those who haven’t heard of it yet.
