Robert Mayer to Speak on Civil Rights Hero

As Black History month marches on, Civil rights icon Diane Nash takes center stage at Lafayette College on Wednesday, February 17. In preparation for that event, Robert Mayer, professor of education will give a talk outlining Nash’s development as an activist and freedom fighter and her leadership in the struggle to end segregation in Nashville. Mayer’s presentation, “The Civil Rights Life of Diane Nash and America’s Democratic Project,” will take place from noon to 1 pm on Monday, February 15, at the Limburg Theater on Lafayette’s campus.

Joy Hirokawa to Present at Choral Director’s Association Conference

Assistant professor of music, Joy Hirokawa will give a presentation entitled “Jazz Choral Music for Kids” at the American Choral Director's Association Eastern Division Conference, to be held February 10 to 13, in Boston, Massachusetts. “Arranging music in this genre for children and youth has become a focus of my work in music education. There is not much jazz choral music arranged with this audience in mind,” says Hirokawa, who had her third jazz arrangement--"Ac-cent-tchu-ate the Positive" by Harold Arlen and Johnny Mercer—published just recently. At the conference, Hirokawa will also be leading a choral reading session for children and youth choirs.

Joel Nathan Rosen Teams up with Co-author at Book Event

Professor of Sociology Joel Nathan Rosen and co-author Roberta Newman will discuss their Peterson-Award-winning book Black Baseball, Black Business at the Bergino Baseball Clubhouse in New York City on February 25 at 7 pm. The Peterson Award is the highest honor given for Negro League research by the Society for American Baseball Research.

 

And the Award Goes to...Christopher Shorr

Associate Professor of Theater Arts Christopher Shorr wins best original play of 2015 in professional theater for “Journey from the East,” which he cowrote with Touchstone Theatre cofounder Bill George. Lehigh Valley Press Focus called the play “…undeniably one of the most ambitious Lehigh Valley theater projects...a mash-up of eastern myths and western myths.” Each year the Bethlehem Press honors the area’s top theatrical productions at the ABEs. Artist-in-Residence Sean O’Boyle was featured in a January 29th article in the Winston-Salem Journal. O’Boyle visited Winston-Salem, North Carolina, to meet with high school musicians and conduct the Forsyth County All-County Orchestra in their annual concert. You can read the full story here:
