Banner of Hope

The banner on display at VT

The Moravian College community responded to the tragic shootings on Virginia Tech's campus by filling a 9-foot canvas banner with messages of hope, solidarity, sympathy and encouragement. The banner was on display in the HUB on April 17 and 18 for students, faculty members and others in the community to inscribe their sentiments (both sides were used, due to the volume of messages). A brief dedication ceremony featured a blessing by Chaplain Bennett, some remarks from President Thomforde, a moment of silence and the pealing of a bell in remembrance of the victims. The banner was shipped to Virginia Tech on April 19, where it was put on display.

A concurrent banner was available for those who wished to call for governmental action against gun violence. It was sent to Pennsylvania Senators Specter and Casey with a letter explaining the banner and its message.
