Moravian College’s Accounting Club hosted its annual awards dinner on April 21 in the HUB Pavilion. About 40 students and alumni attended the dinner, at which two alumni and several outstanding junior and senior students were given awards. The new accounting club officers were also inducted during the ceremony.

After a light reception of punch and hors d’oeuvres, accounting professor John Rossi welcomed everyone and said the purpose of the dinner was to “recognize and celebrate the many accomplishments of our accounting club and students throughout the year.”

After the seafood dinner was served, the awards ceremony began. James West, professor of economics, noted the achievements of Moravian’s accounting students. “Accounting students set the bar pretty high for all the other majors,” he said, describing how accounting majors are known for obtaining the most internships and jobs before graduating.

Student awards were presented first. The Lucas Accounting Awards, presented by Eugene Daniel Lucas, were given to four junior accounting majors, Ruben De La Cruz, Wendy Fomby, Samuel Sortino, and Danielle Zimmerman.

Next, the recipients of the 2012 PICPA Scholarship Award were recognized—Karen Purkey ’13 and Troy Silfies ’13. Five Outstanding Senior awards were presented to Jacqueline Fontana, Sarah Maloney, Shannen Mohr, Karen Purkey, and Jacqueline Raia. Finally the 2012-2013 Becker CPA Review Campus Reprsentative, Jacqueline Fontana ’13, was recognized and the new 2013-2014 Representative, Julian DiGiacomo ’14, introduced.

Moravian alumni Frank J. Conforti ’98 was presented with the Pinnacle Award. Conforti, who is the chief financial officer of Urban Outfitters, spent a few minutes sharing his success story. He advised students to always “continue to learn and grow” and to be hardworking.

Nicole Chupa ’08 was presented with the Young Accounting Alumni Award. Chupa works as a senior accountant for Buckno Lisicky and Company. She advised students to “Try everything! Take every opportunity that is given to you.”

Following the presentations of the awards, the incoming Accounting Club officers were sworn in. In accordance with Accounting Club tradition, Wendy Fomby, incoming president, swore in the rest of the officers on the Miller GAAP Guide. The incoming officers included Danielle Zimmerman ’14, Zena Mhrtam ’14, Megan Mummey ’15, Katelyn Kopach ’15, Cristina Mazariegos-Castano ’14, Karen Purkey ’13, Spencer Bahel-Mowrer ’15, and Thomas Lazaro ’13.

The ceremony and dinner concluded with remarks by Rossi and Fomby on the successful events held by the Accounting Club over the past academic year—including networking events, visits from Mars, Inc., and informational sessions on the CPA exam—and the events they plan to hold next year.

Fomby stated that the Accounting Club will “continue to provide opportunities for accounting students, and students from other majors, to make connections.”
