Moravian College Named a 2014 Top Workplace in the Lehigh Valley by The Morning Call

President Bryon L. Grigsby '90 Honored with Leadership Award for Large Employers

Moravian College was named a 2014 Top Workplace in the Lehigh Valley by The Morning Call. The College was ranked second in the large employer category, highlighting organizations with 500-plus employees. In addition, Moravian College President Bryon L. Grigsby ’90 received the Leadership Award for large employers.

The awards were announced at The Morning Call’s Top Workplaces Dinner Program on February 25 at the Holiday Inn in Bethlehem, Pa. The results were published in a special section of The Morning Call on Wednesday, February 26. The content is available online at

“We are pleased to be recognized by The Morning Call for being a top workplace in the Lehigh Valley,” said Bryon L. Grigsby. “Moravian truly is a great place to go to college and work, I’ve done both. Our mission guides us, our students inspire us, and our alumni and friends help support us. The dedicated men and women of the faculty and staff make the Moravian College experience something really special.”

The Morning Call’s top workplaces are selected through an analysis of confidential surveys of employees that were conducted in the fall by WorkplaceDynamics, LLP, a leading research firm on organizational health and employee engagement. Employees were asked whether they agreed with 19 statements about their workplaces. According to WorkplaceDynamics, the statement with the strongest correlation to a high ranking is "I believe this company is going in the right direction.” (If employees tended to agree with that statement, they were likely to rate their workplace favorably in other areas too, resulting in an overall high ranking for their workplace.) Other statements with high correlation to a high ranking were: "I feel genuinely appreciated at this company;" "I have confidence in the leader of this company;" and, "My job makes me feel like I am part of something meaningful." Moravian’s sense of community, great benefits, and great students are cited as the reasons employees love to work at the College. In the article Moravian College, A Sense of Community, a number of employees expressed their enthusiasm for working at Moravian. "I feel very fulfilled," said Katie Desiderio, assistant professor of management. "A job isn't just a salary. It's the overall package and here it's better."

Nathan Shank, associate professor of mathematics, said the students are why Moravian is such a great place to work. “Small class sizes allow me to get know my students," he explained.

Julia Gasdaska ’07, director of leadership giving, said she feels good about coming to work every day. "I work for an institution with a solid mission,” she said. “We believe in education for everyone. I work in an environment that is constantly inspiring."

For Scot Dapp, Moravian's athletic director, it’s about the people. "The people are the best part," Dapp said. "It is a great environment to learn and have fun. The College is a place where ideas are listened to and employees are offered the opportunity to grow.”
